Ted Sorensen dies: JFK’s speechwriter was 82

Ted Sorensen, who served as President John F. Kennedy’s adviser and primary speechwriter, died today at New York Presbyterian Hospital of complications from a stroke he suffered last week. He was 82.

Mr. Sorensen was instrumental in helping write “Profiles in Courage,” the 1956 book for which Kennedy won a Pulitzer Prize. He later became part of the president’s inner circle, helping craft Kennedy’s national addresses as well as his delicate correspondence with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

In all seriousness, just because I’m curious: as far as I know, there are about 937 zillion dialects of Chinese language, most of which are apparently mutually exclusive. Does your daughter speak one of them? If so, how did she learn? If not, how is it possible to teach English to native Chinese speakers?

I know a person who teaches English to Japanese schoolkids and he only has a very feeble grasp of Japanese. I can’t fathom how one can teach without being able to translate LIKE A MACHINE BUILT SPECIFICALLY FOR TRANSLATING, but there it is anyway.

Languages fascinate and frustrate me. I’m sticking to the easy (if weird) ones, like English, German, and Spanish. I don’t speak any of the three with any degree of noteworthy facility, but I can get by. Kinda.

In all seriousness, just because I’m curious: as far as I know, there are about 937 zillion dialects of Chinese language, most of which are apparently mutually exclusive. Does your daughter speak one of them? If so, how did she learn? If not, how is it possible to teach English to native Chinese speakers?

Did you see Good Morning, Viet Nam? Watching Robin Williams teaching English to the Viet Namese students was hilarious.

Possibly because Portal doesn’t try to sell itself as something it isn’t. It’s a short fun FPP First Person Puzzle….

Teaching English sounds like it could be an interesting thing to do after college. My problem is I don’t think I would be a good teacher and I would think you would have to have some knowledge in the foreign language. It does sound like neat work though. When I was in Prague bar-hopping one night I met a guy who was teaching English I believe to Czech businessmen and women. I really want to live abroad again. Had a lot of fun living in Ireland briefly last summer.

This is from the video game “Portal” by Steam. You play a guinea pig in an experiment constantly being urged to continue with the promises of cake. Pretty cool game as well.

Really great game, and you’re not killing anyone in the game, so it’s probably better for kids than the other games using the Source Game Engine.

He’s not quite the household name he used to be but it would be an interesting public campaign of publically prominent Muslims like Dave, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and others would say I am an American and a Muslim but I do respect their right to religious privacy too.

I can see how the pharma lobby wants very much for it to remain illegal. If pot is legal the billion dollar sales of sleeping pills will diminish significantly. So will drugs for nausea, anti-depressants, anti-spasmodics…

Laws against marijuana were always prohibition 2.0
So we have organized crime 2.0- The Zetas et al.

We do not have enforcement 2.0, that’s still at a previous version.

If an objective/apolitical point of view says intoxicants below a certain threshold for causing harm are allowed, then we see pot is at or less harmful than booze. Caffeine, alcohol are allowed even in highly concentrated forms.

Our society has little support to legalize anything deemed more dangerous, like cocaine or heroine. It seems to me pot is far less harmful than booze, even in the instance of addiction. Perhaps especially so. I agree. The rest of the common intoxicants are far more dangerous.

After my mom died of Cancer I was going through her jewelry box and found a joint.. My poor mom couldn’t eat…

When my dad was being killed by chemo (literally actually) the poor sweet man was so horribly ill. He hadn’t been able to keep any food down in about 3 weeks, going from a robust man who looked about 60 to a frail elderly man in a few short weeks. One day I took him a joint. This was a guy who wouldn’t drive a mile over the speed limit cuz it was illegal, but this one time he didn’t even hesitate. He took a few hits from the joint and within 30 minutes he was up, dressed, and we were on our way to his favorite “greasy spoon” for a big breakfast of runny eggs, hash browns, and sausage. He put that food away with the greatest delight. My aunt and I watched him eat in entire disbelief, waiting for him to get violently ill. He never did.

I tried to get Dad to accept more but he refused. He didn’t want me to get into trouble getting it for him. I am still enraged over this. This amazing simple herb did what no drugs they gave my dad could. It not only helped him get some nutrition but it gave him some joy when all he had at that point was pain and sickness. I will never forgive this.

re: #206 Aceofwhat?

A friend of mine, an old police sergeant, is heavily pro-legalization partially because it’d mean fewer cops. Because, as he bluntly said, “We’ve got a lot of shitheels on the force we need to get rid of.”

He wants to raise the quality of the police force, and feels like his job would be much easier and safer if they could have more stringent requirements for entry and a much easier path to firing cops for corruption.

He’s a totally straight-and-narrow cop who’d never taken a bribe or been the slightest bit shady with evidence. As a result, he’s had to find work in a town, not a city, because, he says, corruption— at least of a minimal cover-up level— is endemic in every metropolitan police force.

Yay.

Let me be clear, he’s not alleging that guys are routinely planting guns and drugs on people, stealing drugs, etc. What he’s alleging is that they routinely fudge paperwork, routinely claim that their evidence is stronger than it is— that they saw a guy do something when they have a source who saw it— and that often they want to close a case and so, since they have a limited amount of time, they decide who they think did it and look for evidence to prove that case, rather than all the available evidence. Especially when the accused is a no-sympathy type— a violent shithead who’s been in and out of jail— he said it’s really easy for cops to rationalize “If he didn’t do this, he did something else, so why not throw him in for it?”

I’ve never really been to it myself. My own experiences tell me that I was told lies by the films my grade school teachers told me: one being that pot leads to greater drugs, I’ve never touched meth, heroin, or cocaine and I probably never will at this point and secondly it was made out like once you try pot there’s no way of quitting. I actually had a three year gap where I smoked no marijuana at all.

and of course there are plenty of industries (mining, anyone?) where the union remains an absolutely essential component of the corporate structure.

in the rest of private industry, one of my favorite aphorisms is “most companies who have unions deserve them”. Treat people well, fairly, and generously…and there is no unionizing.

re: #234 Obdicut

No, you were clear enough…that was my understanding, too. But even that, what you wrote above, is a depressing and unprofessional state of affairs.

re: #174 allegro

It amazes me that even now after so many studies and proven effectiveness in treating so many different ailments that many people still insist it has no medical benefits. It is one of nature’s most powerful and completely useful herbs.

I can see how the pharma lobby wants very much for it to remain illegal. If pot is legal the billion dollar sales of sleeping pills will diminish significantly. So will drugs for nausea, anti-depressants, anti-spasmodics…

I was in a car accident and injured my back quite badly. My doc gave me pretty strong pain killers and muscle relaxants. They didn’t work very well and left me in a 24 hour daze. I went back and told him about the problem. He said look I’ll tell you a story, “I once knew a guy who had a similar injury and found that smoking weed really helped. Of course I do not recommend that. It’s illegal. Now lets see if we can get you into some better therapy.” He then moved on but his message was clear.

So I tried it and it worked 100 times better then the other drugs. The best thing about it was it was easy to control, how much and when. When a few puffs didn’t work I’d take a few more. I never used it while working but boy it was a godsend when I got home. The stuff actually relaxed my muscles in a way the pharma relaxants didn’t.

Next time I went to the doc I told him that I was doing what the guy in his story did. The doc just smiled and nodded. Well if it works it works.

I actually had a three year gap where I smoked no marijuana at all.

having to buy pot from a drug dealer leads to greater drugs…but that ain’t the same thing…

The caseloads they have are insane. The amount of crime that simply goes uninvestigated is nuts. Simple property crimes aren’t looked into almost at all— at most, it’s done through pawnshop lists.

There are places you can literally call the cops and tell them you know who stole your whatever, and they’ll say it’s not worth their time to investigate.

And, statistically, they’re right. The amount of shit they have to deal with is so large that they have to not investigate some crimes so that they can concentrate on the violent ones.

Right. And basically we’re looking at four different sub-cultures: meth, heroin, cocaine, and pot. Cocaine would be the most common to intersect with pot users. Meth of course is a new trend but heroin was well outside of the sphere of pot smokers. You would rarely if ever be around heroin users back in the 70s when amongst pot smokers. Besides that, it was always looked at with fear even amongst pot and coke users. It was like “the big one” that could easily kill you.

Yep. Pot doesn’t lead to harder drugs. Being exposed to people that do harder drugs may lead to harder drugs. So if you’re friends only smoke pot that’s where it stops. It only begins if you have a friend (or dealer) that says something like “I got some smack want to try some?” Maybe there was acid around but seriously. Who wants to drop a hit of acid and spend a whole day possibly freaking out and taking the chances of permanently destroying one’s brain.

There aren’t drastic differences in deleterious effects, though. Crack is basically just a different dosage and delivery system— the sentencing guidelines treat it as though it’s 100 times worse. At most, it’s a few times worse.

Add to this that the majority of crack sold on the street is incredibly impure— has been stepped on a lot— but it’s all treated as though it’s 100% pure, and you’ve got some seriously fucked-up and improper laws.

Well, I can honestly say that I really enjoy pot. I don’t currently use any. But I have, for lengthy periods of time, and had no ill-effects at all, other than when I was smoking it— had the effects of the smoke. I had no harmful effects on my memory— probably because I was smoking really good stuff which can actually have a positive effect on memory.

[Link: bjp.rcpsych.org…]

During the time in my life when I smoked a lot of pot, I held down a great, intense job, was on time to everything, and was responsible in every way.

During the time in my life I drank a lot, I had trouble at work, was late all the time, and was not someone you wanted to depend on.

The sheer concentration and propensity for overdose is a pretty big factor. What is that old wisdom? The “poison” is in the dose. And the dose, likely to be who knows what else in there, begs for stricter measures.

I’m open to whatever method to reduce a racial component. But I suspect that is more an enforcement than letter of law issue. Note pot arrests in “the hood” and African American arrest rates. The law is the same white or black user, yet we have more blacks busted.

People who want to explore their own consciousness, and deconstruct and revise personal values that don’t have rational support. It destroys the ability to ignore problems, so one can more clearly see what’s right and not right in their lives, and that can be very hard. Definitely not recommended for recreational use, but it is a very powerful tool.

It doesn’t destroy brains either, though as with any mind-altering drug it can definitely make existing mental illness a lot worse.

Mentally healthy people can get a lot of benefit from dosing once a year and cleaning out the junk in their heads. I don’t have drug connections, so I haven’t had any in years, but it was for sure a positive in my life. It made me appreciate the people in my life a lot more, and made me realize that I should not be smoking cigarettes back when I felt immortal.

The ‘posion’ is mainly in whatever crap they’ve stepped on it with. But I get your point, and I agree that the selective enforcement is even more of an issue. But whatever the ratio of harmfulness you think crack is to cocaine, you’ve gotta agree it’s not 100:1. 100:1 would mean anyone taking a hit of crack would instantly die.

I have no idea. Seriously the average pot smokers I’ve known over the years haven’t been criminals. To me it’s just like having a beer or smoking a cigarrette.

I don’t like the culture that exists around pot. I don’t enjoy hearing about how wonderful pot is. I’m dubious that pot is really the only thing that ALWAYS works for this or that medical ailment. I hate the smell. I hate the paranoia and self-righteousness that being a pothead seems to induce.

That said, I hope they legalize the crap and then shut up about it.

uhh it’s pretty obvious the reason pot heads (including me OMG) are paranoid is because of harassment they have been on the receiving end of, courtesy of meathead idiot cops with a chip on their shoulder, that love to exert authority so that they can be in control and the “bigger man”.

as for self righteousness, us pot-heads find it patently unjust that said drug is illegal, and the fact that changing that is like pulling teeth leads supporters of legalization to get angry at the political system, and this anger leads self-righteousness, because obviously the pothead thinks they are right and the government (the whole system maaan) is wrong.
