GOP Extremist Ken Buck Defeated in Colorado

Politics • Views: 26,235

In Colorado, I’m pleased to report that far right GOP candidate Ken Buck has been defeated by Democrat Michael Bennet: Bennet wins in Senate race.

Last night many people (including me) went to bed thinking Buck was the winner, but the final returns from Denver and Boulder put Bennet over the top. Whew. That was close.

It’s becoming clear that in many of the most publicized high-profile races, voters definitively rejected the religious right extremists backed by the Tea Party movement and their corporate astroturf sponsors.

Please G-d they don't. The best thing for the good folks of America is for them to run Palin :) Of course I still have some faith in America and the American voter. A president Palin is something to make my hair white at the thought of it if taken seriously.

He hated scientists, the poor, and some people's choices of who to fuck.

He lost.

Yeah this is good to hear. And as people have mentioned looks like Miller is losing to Murkowski in Alaska too. Pretty glad really that a lot of nuts didn't get elected in the senate. The good news here out of Va-11 is it looks like Gerry Connolly increased his lead over Keith Finian. So, I am not really too disappointed with yesterday's results all in all. Sure a lot of candidates whom I'd prefer win did not but it could have been much worse.

Same thing I noticed. People are pretty quick to think twice after he asks them the reverse regarding being straight.

32 HappyWarrior  Wed, Nov 3, 2010 6:08:18pm

The thing I don't about those who claim being gay is choice is how do they explain the very anti gay pastors who are either revealed to be gay themselves or have gay children. Of course, some of them probably think it's some kind of conspiracy or some crap. HOnestly, even if being gay was a choice, we still shouldn't treat gay people like second class citizens. I have a uge problem with groups like the AFA, Focus on the FAmily who claim their views are "pro family." There to me is nothing more anti family than putting some one down because they're gay.

Right. It's like the video Obdicut put up in #19. No one chooses to be gay or straight.

If being hetero is 'natural', in other words genetic, then being 'gay' must also be genetic.

It simply is not a choice.

This is good point. Even if it were a choice, it would be a choice that harmed no one. It doesn't matter that it's a choice, and I don't like it when gay rights are framed as "The poor queers just can't help themselves".

However, I think it is a very good way for people to understand gay people, to realize that they don't have a choice.

Regarding the consequences of the election with regards to redistricting (lawhawk as a page up talking about it):

Republicans and the Tea Party made a big deal of being against "politics as usual" or "back-room deals" or "Washington doing what's best for Washington" (a line from Boehner's speech, choked out between tears).

Of course, all of us here know that all that talk is just bullshit. I just wonder how quickly and blatantly they will be prove they're the same as every previous politician when it comes to gerrymandering, and whether Democrats can effectively publicize it. And if anyone will care.

Anyone who says it's a choice is either being very dishonest, or is bisexual. Most of us are attracted to either males or females, and know we never chose. It's just part of who we are.

Oh, I easily agree with that. HOnestly, my big problem is when groups like those I mentioned use the fact that some Nazis like Ernst Rohm were gay and use it as a reason that we should be intolerant to gays. Using that logic we should persecute Catholics and Lutherans because many Nazis were that too. Of course the real infuriating thing about doing that to me is it misses the lessons of regimes like the Nazis which is not to persecute people simply because they're different. I get real offended when I see gay rights activists compared to the Nazis. It's outrageous considering these people simply want the same rights as I do.

The moral of this 2010 election is to be careful who you nominate. Note that Marco Rubio is very conservative, but he also had the poise and campaigning skill to win. By contrast, Christine O'Donnell won the nomination because the GOP base voted "not liberal" without reference to whether their preferred nominee was electable. Republicans need to take that lesson to heart:

Nominating conservatives is a good idea, but you need to make sure that they really capable of winning. Don't fall prey to wishful thinking, the voters tend not to elect weirdos of questionable background.

40 Obdicut  Wed, Nov 3, 2010 6:17:13pm

re: #38 HappyWarrior

Anyone comparing gay rights activists to the Nazis is making as little sense and acting as contemptibly as someone comparing Jewish activists to the Nazis.

Common trait? Both were sent to death camps by the Nazis.

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

Note:

After the war, the treatment of homosexuals in concentration camps went unacknowledged by most countries, and some men were even re-arrested and imprisoned based on evidence found during the Nazi years. It was not until the 1980s that governments began to acknowledge this episode, and not until 2002 that the German government apologized to the gay community. This period still provokes controversy, however. In 2005, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the Holocaust which included the persecution of homosexuals.

And here is the disgusting, stupid, but also hilarious in a sad, sad way, 'conservapedia' entry on that.

And the dishonesty of using Nazis like Rohm is severe, since "The Pink Swastika" associates homosexuality with the Holocaust, when in fact the homosexual members of the Nazi SA had been purged and killed in 1935. The book is utter bunk and relies on the historical ignorance of its readers for its effect.

And, i've said it before and i'll say it again - nominate candidates who can win. I don't think a strict cultural conservative could win Delaware - or even a strict slash and burn economic conservative. Only moderates win in Delaware.
Pick candidates to win districts. The democrats learned that lesson and Howard Dean implemented a 50 state stratergy while he was in the DNC.

It's pathetic really. It reminds me of hte people who insist that Nazism was left wing but forget to mention that the Nazis' biggest enemies were groups on the left like the social democrats, communists, trade unionists, etc. And the fact that the party's left wing was heavily purged during that same time frame you're talking about with the SA. Shit even if Hitler was gay it still would be wrong to go after people for being gay. I don't see anyone gay people out there who suggest because so and so dictator was straight that all straight people are evil.

The real lesson to me is to understand your state and electorate. A guy like Mike Castle wins in Delaware because he's able to appeal across the spectrum. There's a reason he had been elected governor and congressman there even though Delaware has gone Democratic in every presidential election since Bill Clinton's first win and has 2 Dem senators. You have to understand your region and not just be thinking about your base which is exactly what Palin and DeMint were doing when they kingmaked all these crazy candidates we came to know and love.

I don't know. Half of Scott Lee Cohen's support ended up going to Pat Quinn. Those votes give Quinn the best shot winning the gubernatorial election (its close enough we may not know for a few days). However, the ex-Cohen voters only went against Brady en masse, many of them split their tickets to vote for Mark Kirk.

OT, but not really:

Scientists discover that Ozzy is a mutant. Apparently his superpower is tolerance for drugs and alcohol.

A study of the hard-partying rocker revealed he actually has several genetic mutations that may explain how he's lived so long, scientists say.

Some of them "we've never seen before," said geneticist Nathaniel Pearson, who was part of the team that sequenced Osbourne's DNA for Massachusetts lab Knome Inc.

"I've always said that at the end of the world there will be roaches, Ozzy and Keith Richards," the Prince of Darkness' wife Sharon Osbourne said.

"He's going to outlive us all. That fascinated me - how can his body endure so much."

The 61-year-old "Black Sabbath" singer is as famous for his colossal intake as he is for his voice. He once said he did LSD every day for two years and he drank booze like water.

No surprisingly, many of the anomalies scientists discovered had to do with how he processes drugs and alcohol.

The most frothing nutcases of the Tea Party thankfully lost (Buck, Angle, O'Donnell, and hopefully Miller).

But dammit - Feingold lost to their first of kin (Johnson).

Russ Feingold - the only Senator with the balls to vote against both the disastrous Iraq War and the Patriot Spy Act is headed out.

Russ - we don't deserve you.

Feingold got caught in a GOP congressional flood tide in the Great Lakes region. The Dems suffered losses from Pennsylvania to Minnesota.

Its a good thing if it leads to the destruction of a party that can no longer function for any purpose besides winning elections.

The GOP's time may be up and we would instead get a new party made up of fiscal conservatives and blue dog democrats, with the actual progressives getting their own real party...

Or we may see some kind of three way split (yeah right)

Texastan Republican Ralph Hall (who is, I believe, the senior rep from TX), made a statement today:

Hall Claims Science Panel, Vows 'Strong Oversight' on 'Climate Change, Scientific Integrity'

"Nationally, I am heartened that Americans returned Republicans to the majority in hopes of providing a check on runaway spending in Washington and getting the economy back on track toward growth and job creation. I look forward to working with current members on the Science and Technology Committee, as well as hearing from our new members, to formulate and advance an agenda that keeps our nation moving forward. The Science and Technology Committee will be a place where every member's ideas will be respected and considered, and all Republicans can play a role in crafting good science policy.

"We must also conduct strong oversight over this Administration in key areas including climate change, scientific integrity, energy research and development (R&D), cybersecurity, and science education. Over the past few years the unprecedented growth of the Federal government and the creation of multiple new and duplicative programs occurred without having first assessed the effectiveness and success of existing programs.

"My goal is to ensure science policy drives innovation and thereby the American economy. Federal investment in R&D must empower the free market, not interfere in it."

So it looks like he is going to carry out Issa's request for the great inquisition of climatology. Hall is noted for being part of the group with Sensenbrenner and old Joe Barton for leading the cause against dealing with these types of environmental issues.

According to SourceWatch:

Ralph Hall has received $78,199 in oil contributions during the 110th congress. $53,999 of those dollars were from industry PACS. In total, Hall has accepted $307,930 from oil companies between 2000 and 2008, which makes him one of the largest recipients of oil money.

Hey all, evening.

Just returned from a potluck/community meeting.
One of the best potlucks I've ever been too. The food was all amazing and yummy.
Afterwards a couple of people got some guitars out and sung some great classic songs which most people knew and sung along with as well. It's been a long time since I've been to something like this. I'd forgotten how fun it can be.
Hands down best part of the evening was when an 80+ year old gentleman sung his heart into Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' with everyone joining in.

It was spine tingly it was so beautiful.

Hall is from Rockwall, which is the Texastani equivalent of Waziristan.

While Hall was very conservative even by Texas Democratic standards, his conservatism can be attributed to the demographics of the 4th District. It had once been reliably Democratic, but became increasingly friendly to Republicans as Dallas' suburban growth reached into the western portion of the district (for instance, Rockwall County includes a small portion of Dallas itself) and areas such as Tyler broke away from their Democratic roots. The 4th has not supported a Democrat for president since 1964.

Hi you..Looks like the GOP took the house..Not really surprising given such poison in the debate this season

Speaking of poison, there was some discussion in earlier threads about how the most jubilation about the election results could be found on white supremacist sites. After donning virtual waders and drudging through the Stormfront sewers, I can confirm that's true:

The one positive thing about this election is the Tea Party movement. While it's true the Republican Party isn't good for much aside from lowering taxes, the Tea Party is running people who support the Constitution and who are a lot more serious about the illegal alien problem. Other interesting points are:

1).The Tea Party is successfully hijacking the Republican Party at the grass roots level. (This has obvious positive implications for any future pro-White candidates.)

2).The Tea Party candidates are doing well in the polls despite months of attacks by the Jewish media. Almost every embarrassing thing the Jews could dig up on these candidates has been put on the news while other candidates like Barney Frank, who previously had a Gay partner running a brothel, get little to no criticism.

3).Many people are finally realizing that mainstream Republicans are little better than Democrats. A lot of hack Republicans were defeated in the primaries, where people need to focus their attention. This is extremely encouraging. Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Bennett both lost their primaries. Both of them voted for Amnesty. John McCain nearly lost his primary. McCain had to spend $21 million and pretend to be Tom Tancredo to survive his primary challenge.

While we're still a way off from getting openly pro-White candidates elected, we're definitely moving in the right direction.

When people like this think you're moving in the "right direction", it might just be time to reconsider what your movement represents...

"Jane? Jane Doe? That little no good man stealing, leg spreading, lie telling, disease ridden, football hatin'... person! Can't stand the sight of her, bless her little heart!"

Is that where it comes from? Neat. I had a great aunt and she would always say that at the end of complaining or gossiping about someone.

I'm gonna wait for some peer review on this, but I still think it's funny that the Serpent of Eden may have achieved immaculate conception.

A female boa constrictor snake has given birth to two litters of extraordinary offspring.

Evidence suggests the mother snake has had multiple virgin births, producing 22 baby snakes that have no father.

More than that, the genetic make-up of the baby snakes is unlike any previously recorded among vertebrates, the group which includes almost all animals with a backbone.

Details are published in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters.

Good food doesn't even have to be that complex or hard to make. Gourmet smourmet. I think once people realize that it's off to the races. (Although I do enjoy the occasional night out at a finer dining restaurant)

At first I thought I had more grand plans for my potluck dish and was making a shopping list. Then I thought no screw this I'm going to make something easy and cheap with what I had on hand. So I mashed some potatoes with butter and chicken stock, sauted some onions and garlic and mixed it in and finished it off with a bit of salt, pepper and dill.

Simple, not too fancy and it tasted great. I wish there had been some left to bring home. :(

I will. Though tomorrow I have to use up some leeks so I'm going to make a batch of potato and leek soup. It's my fall and winter favorite.

Here's my recipe if anyone is interested.

Chop up 2 to 3 big leeks. Saute until tender. Add a bit of water to cover and simmer.
Cook 3-6 potatoes in a pot of chicken stock. I usually just use a litre(quart). If more just increase potatoes.
When potatoes are cooked dump in the leeks.

I use a hand blender and just puree it right in the pot until it's smooth.
If I have some sour cream on hand I'll add a few glops until it looks right.

Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Enjoy!

Texastan Republican Ralph Hall (who is, I believe, the senior rep from TX), made a statement today:

So it looks like he is going to carry out Issa's request for the great inquisition of climatology. Hall is noted for being part of the group with Sensenbrenner and old Joe Barton for leading the cause against dealing with these types of environmental issues.

According to SourceWatch:

Just to drive the point home, Isaiah said:

It’s becoming clear that in many of the most publicized high-profile races, voters definitively rejected the religious right extremists backed by the Tea Party movement and their corporate astroturf sponsors.

Well, yes. But from this follows another conclusion: the "Tea Party" stuff was not the heart and center of the political shift that saw so many sitting members of the House, and some in the Senate, defeated.
The "real" conservatives backed away from the TP cliff and stood aside to allow Dems to win, with the lamentable exception of Rand Paul and some lesser lights here and there.

Voters who do NOT subscribe to TP agenda are unhappy with the current course that Obama and his Congressional majority have plotted for the country.

So one of the media's big questions all day has been: will the TP winners from last night go along with the establishment GOP, or buck their party and stand on principle?

I think this question makes a faulty assumption, namely that there are significant ideological differences between the TP on one hand, and the GOP establishment. The TP's main goal was to move the GOP to the right and make them stick to their small govt verbiage they've used for decades but hadn't necessarily lived up to.

And thus far the TP has gotten what they wanted. Since it's unlikely the GOP will push anything huge, transformative, controversial and ambitious like HCR, what potentially divisive legislative battles lie ahead between TP and regular GOP? I don't see any.

Furthermore, the TP has a lot of political neophytes who don't even know how DC works. They're hardly in a position to take on the powerful GOP leadership.

More, he blamed people's stupidity for not getting behind them.

I know this. I know that Christine O'Donnell didn't kill anybody [and she's not a witch] at Chappaquiddick by driving her car off the bridge. I know that she didn't lie about her country [just the Constitution] and denigrate her country when she got back from Vietnam. I know she didn't do that. She doesn't have anywhere near the baggage that prominent Democrats have. She has nowhere near the baggage that acclaimed, loved, adored, and said to be stars in the Democrat Party have. Did she ever join the Ku Klux Klan? [No, but she did belong to a party that gets support from and defends Klukkers.] Did she ever become a Kleagle and recruit for the Ku Klux Klan? [Give her time.] She didn't, did she? The Democrats have a guy who did. Robert Byrd and his seat stayed in the Democrat Party. [And now you have Rand Paul. You must be so proud, Rush.] Did she have anywhere near the kind of financial fraud and tax cheating that Charles Rangel had? [Rangel's is too epic to compete against for anyone of any party.] No. And yet somehow there's a lesson that we are to learn from Christine O'Donnell? [Yes, stay in school. Even public school.] Exactly who are the stupid here, Christine O'Donnell or the people who let the media and the unions put Chris Coons into that seat? [Yeah, those intellectual elitists.] Is it really smart that we have Chris Coons in the Senate from Delaware? [God's will, Rush. Don't fight it.] Is it smart that we took steps that allowed that to happen? Who's really stupid out there? [Well...] Who are the stupid people? Sharron Angle [you betchya!] or the people who let the media and the unions give the election to Harry Reid without any ground game money. [Spookier yet they'd take a loser like Reid over Angle - she's that bad.]

I do a better job at home than any restaurant I can afford anyways.

Word. Most people could if they put their minds to it. I've worked in kitchens and pizza places before, and often have been disturbed by some of the behavior and conditions. I'd much prefer to have absolute control over the ingredients, their quality, and the cleanliness of the cooking environment then to trust it to a group of strangers.

Bohner et al would freak at what I saw yesterday.

I've started a new project which involves working with the entire provincial curriculum. Yesterday I got the hard copies of Grade 1-8. I really didn't know what to expect as it's been years since I've been to elementary school myself and a really had little idea of what is actually taught.
So far I'm fairly impressed by it. For one basic science and specifically ecology as related to how human interact and effect our environment is integrated all over the place.
They also start learning the basics of climate science and yes climate change as just a given in grade 2.

Davis Frum makes a few good points:

"The Republican leaders won twice last night. They won a majority in the House of Representatives and a big gain in the Senate.

Those leaders also won an important psychological contest inside the Republican party: Three ridiculously winnable Senate seats have been thrown away by incompetent Tea Party radicals: Delaware, Nevada, and possibly Colorado"

With the teabaggers that are joining the House, herding a pack of rabid wolverines will be easier for Boehner than actually getting any legislation done.

The Tea Party loons are already promising hearings about Climategate and investigations into Obama (read: Birthers, ahoy!). Add Luap Nor possibly overseeing the Fed and absolutely nothing will get done. They're already talking about a government shutdown being Obama's fault, for crying out loud.

We're in for two years of gridlock and idiocy unless the R's can somehow beat the teabaggers into a state of reasonableness.

What's hurting middle class America is the Marxist Muslim in the Whitehouse, don't you know?

Well, sure, but Boehner has the reins now. It's his turn to write statutes to be presented to the House, then the Senate, and finally to Prexy. The Democratically controlled Senate will shield the Prez, unless they lose all faith in him, in which case they will pass it up for the Prexy to veto and take the heat.

Interesting times!

In Boehner's speech last night he already threw the gauntlet down, saying it was the President's responsibility to come up with a budget.

(Not what it says in the Constitution, but who needs that old thing once elected, eh?)

Boehner has one game: make Obama look bad for 2012.

Procedural gamesmanship and budget wrangling is at least a game I can relate to

As opposed to what they did in Iowa, which I think is less something I can relate to, and more just another thing that reminds me I have little in common with a lot of America

Good game, Iowa

The ascension of the revanchist right-wing in the area of the country that used to be the home of Lincolnian Republicanism - the north central part of this nation - is certainly telling of what has happened in the US post WWII.

What i think is the grassroots will continue to gain momentum as a movement capable of moving the GOP their way. They can't get a sharron angle elected, because sharron angle was a neophyte with no political experience, but they CAN get a guy who used to be mainstream GOP to basically start taking their cues from the grassroots or be primaried

They almost got Sharron Angle elected, she came close enough to defeating an incumbent with power despite being bonkers and inexperienced that I believe they have a lot more ability to continue to change the GOP, and to continue to convince people to join their ranks because they're angry and unemployed and angry unemployed people make great extremist foot soldiers.

No, but that does not need to happen. The things the GOP leadership needs to do are:

1. Bottle up Rand Paul. He can give his loony speechs like his dad, but the party in the Senate should ignore him.

2. Promptly make it clear (behind closed doors) to the new congresspeople how things work. The leadership needs to get some items to pass worked out and then get its members to work moving those items through the House.

3. Don't run as many moderates as establishment candidates in 2012. Run conservatives, but ones who aren't flaky. Take a page from what Bill Clinton did to the GOP and steal the tea party's thunder.

Turn about is fair play....
Glenn Beck's very own Cloward and Piven strategy

On both his radio and television show, Glenn Beck has spent the better part of a year denouncing the 40-year old ideas of a pair of obscure Columbia sociologists. In 1966, Frances Fox Piven and Richard A. Cloward wrote an essay, published in The Nation, called "The Weight of the Poor: A Strategy to End Poverty." This relatively innocuous thought piece has spawned, in Beck's mind, a massive left-wing conspiracy to increase dependency on government in order to "collapse the industrialized civilization," and bring "chaos," thus forcing the creation of a federal guaranteed national income.

Today, while talking about the national debt and the statutory debt limit, Beck suggested that the Congress refuse to raise the debt ceiling, which would induce a crisis, in order to "force a national conversation" on deficits and spending -- seemingly unaware that this is EXACTLY the kind of thing he's railed against.

The gf and I planned to see the Exploratorium Museum today. I had no idea the zoo it would be at Market St. Not being a baseball fan ( or any sports fan for that matter - very commie pinko of me, I know ), it didn't occur to me that a parade was in order for the SF Giants, in the very area where we needed to catch our bus to the Marina district.

Well, we made it to the museum, enjoyed our time together, had a lovely lunch at the Squat and Gobble, a crepe house in the Marina district, and here I sit, relaxing with a couple beers.

Back to the mob scene at Market Street, in San Francisco, it was a zoo. Much more people than the Pride Parade could ever hope to generate. Even Hot Pink Feathers was there ( a local burlesque troupe) to honor our city's team. Crazy fun.

Good response from Bruce Bartlett.

In conclusion, Former Reagan Treasury official Bruce Bartlett, writing in June on advocates of refusing to raise the debt ceiling:

I am indeed contemptuous of those who advocate irresponsible policies in a juvenile belief that they are standing for principle instead of simply displaying their ignorance and immaturity. Sadly, we no longer live in a society where such people can safely be ignored. Some of them have an hour each day on Fox News to spew their nonsense or talk radio programs with large audiences or are members of Congress. Therefore, it is not unreasonable to think that in about 10 months they may have sufficient support to cause a default on the debt. When that happens we will see whether it leads to a downsizing of government or total chaos that nothing good will come from. I'm betting on the latter.

Let me just say that Ernst Rohm's legacy in history would not have been better if he had been straight.

Well the D's got their collective ass kicked in the House last night, but survived in the Senate. Interesting dynamic. Now the R's have to try to legislate in the House. Given that they have have been The Party of No in the House the last four years, it will be fascinating to see how Boehner tries to fashion real Legislation

He won't, except for bullshit that he knows won't pass the Senate like repealing everything; and maybe some sort of symbolic gestures regarding abortion or gay marriage.

It's the advantage that a conservative party has in a system where govt has never really been trusted much, at least not since the 50s. The liberal party wants to pass big sweeping--often expensive--domestic legislation to improve quality of life as they see it. The conservative party wants nothing more than to prevent big sweeping legislation and to cut taxes (almost never unpopular). Thus the party that's less "ambitious" legislatively has an inherent advantage as they are less likely to have to defend votes for big expensive projects (other than war).

True. But those leaders will have to work hard to bring the teabaggers into line. They can do it, but they need to get strated right away.

Why? What ideological differences do the leaders of the GOP have with the teabaggers that will cause serious internal disputes?

This isn't the Dem party circa 1968--split in two over a major issue like Vietnam. None of the TP's vague overheated rhetoric (small govt, liberty, balanced budgets, jingoism) conflicts that much with the standard GOP agenda.

Please note: the stalker posing as a Wikipedia editor is planning his next move: Talk:Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

i addressed similar concerns upthread in the talk item for my original inclusion [17]. please read that item, because i stated it much better there, but to reiterate down here, there are a lot of things in the article as it stands which would certainly be trivial in other articles, but which are not at all trivial in the context of this article. for instance, the event of johnson writing a post about how he doesn't like republicans anymore hardly caused a ripple outside of a fraction of the blog-o-sphere, but it was an important event in the context of little green footballs, and so it's important enough to be included in the wikipedia article about little green footballs. the event of johnson revising his archives of paranoid rightwing hate-speech is a subsequent, related event of proportionate weight.

if you were really looking for a candidate to place the WP:UNDUE tag on, you might look at the "charitable contributions" section [18].

i agree with obdicut that the article needs a significant re-write. perhaps when i've satisfied this particular inclusion, i'll attempt one as well so we can have two models to draw from. Notanipokay (talk) 03:17, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Next for GOP leaders: Stopping Sarah Palin

"There is a determined, focused establishment effort … to find a candidate we can coalesce around who can beat Sarah Palin," said one prominent and longtime Washington Republican. "We believe she could get the nomination, but Barack Obama would crush her."

This sentiment was a nearly constant refrain in POLITICO interviews with top advisers to the candidates most frequently mentioned as running in 2012 and a diverse assortment of other top GOP officials.

Nearly all of these interviewees insisted on keeping their views on background, fearing the wrath of conservative grass-roots activists who are enthralled with the former Alaska governor and who have made plain that the establishment’s disdain for Palin and her devotees is mutually reciprocated.

Next for GOP leaders: Stopping Sarah Palin

I gotta watch this closely, the metastory of the GOP trying to neutralize Sarah Palin is very interesting to me

What I find interesting is how much denial they are in, they actually think that she somehow personifies their problem, when she's really just a symptom.

Tearing down Buck doesn't make Bennet any better.

It's not this vs. "perfection", it's this vs. "that". Buck lost a lot of female voters for his strict views, and it cost him the election. The GOP ideological purity test strikes again.

The real story deals with us working people in Colorado, and how Bennet will help or hurt us. We've seen his record so far - or at least I've looked at it.

To stay with the mood though, I'll say CONGRATULATIONS ALL YOU GUYS!!!! Although Buck's personal views don't square with mine, he would've be a better senator.

re: #342 palomino

A conservative policy of limiting the size of government [though not its authority] has brought the People's Republic of China a couple of decades or more of near 10% growth. When there is technology waiting to be adopted, people capable of mastering it, and money enough to get started on the adoption, it's folly to spend any but a bare minimum on side issues. Invest, build, grow.

Radical changes can unfold as a result of protracted robust growth. The growth makes possible a social agenda on the cheap that would have been impossibly expensive earlier. The road to a generous social agenda, in absolute terms, is paved with abstemious possibilities that put growth first, followed by modest spending out of a newly abundant total income, spending that looms small but would have overwhelmed the means of the society pre-growth.

Once growth has caught up to available technology, the real debate over whether to increase social spending by the government, leave the money in the hands of the people and let them enjoy the fruits of their labor, attempt to develop yet newer and better technology, or improve the military, or whatever, heats up. There is no longer a clear best choice. "Sweeping government programs" are not necessarily the highest and best use of the resources of a society. All too often, they're a chasing after phantoms. We are not going to have an "ownership society". We are not going to have the world's best educated people. We are not going to end poverty, not when we keep defining poverty upward so that effectively universal indoor plumbing, electricity, color TV, abundant food, sturdy clothing, and so on, doesn't count as "ending poverty".

re: #388 lostlakehiker

this is a very literate and well written essay, yet i disagree with your fundamental premise. government has often driven growth and innovation. money is not a static thing that diassapears when you spend it - money does the most good when it moves around the most, and government does that just as well as any individual or business

lets substantiate this with a concrete example: WWII spending - serious government deficit spending - is not only given credit for really ending the depression, but also spawned many technical innovations, from radar to computers to nuclear energy - that became the foundation of innumerable profitable businesses since

qed massive government spending does not stifle growth and innovation

What's the definition of too drunk?

If you can hang on to the gutter and not fall off the world, you're not drunk.

Let me just say that Ernst Rohm's legacy in history would not have been better if he had been straight.

And he would have lived longer. And been just as much of an evil a-hole.re: #353 Charles

I may have to take this Wikipedia insanity public.

That sounds like a good plan to me.
