Prepare for the Republican Inquisition

Politics • Views: 24,481

The incoming religious right Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Lamar Smith, is making it very clear today that he intends to mercilessly hound the Obama administration.

The San Antonio Congressman who is in line to become chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee is promising ‘a number of investigations and oversight committee actions’ which he vows will ‘hold the administration accountable,’ 1200 WOAI news reports.

Veteran Republican Lamar Smith, a Yale graduate and social conservative who grew up in the brush country of south Texas which is now transit point for illegal immigrants and drugs, said in a news conference that a number of issues will come into the sights of his committee when he takes the chairmanship in January, from cracking down on child pornography to taking the Obama Administration to task for failing to do enough to protect the southern border.

Smith is also one of the Republicans who loves the US Constitution, except for those pesky parts he wants to get rid of.

Smith said that reform of the 14th Amendment, which grants automatic citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants who are born in the U.S., is also an issue his committee may take up under his chairmanship. The 14th Amendment is a hot button issue for conservatives who call for restricting immigration.

And note, they’re not just interested in going after Obama, but after the Constitution.

I guess when you call it ‘reform’ it means you just love the Constitution and want to kiss it all better.

OMG—because his hero GW Bush was so proactive in “protecting the southern border?”

Obama is soft on kiddie porn? I can’t wait to see his “evidence.” Hopefully his constituents will come to view him as a kook and vote him out in 2012. It happened to Bob Barr in GA and Bob Dornan in CA eventually.

Sadly, Ron Paul’s constituents keep returning him to Congress.

Come to think of it, perhaps TX should secede. It sounds like a win-win proposition…they could found their own wingbat paradise, publish their own educational materials, attract all of their fellow travellers, and leave the rest of us alone.

Things I learned from Rush Limbaugh today; (paraphrasing)

“Winners don’t compromise with losers. When MacArthur and the Japanese met on the Missouri, the Japanese had to surrender, there was no compromise. The Germans had to surrender there was no compromise. We compromised with the Russians and look what that got us.

But Rush, you can’t be comparing the Democrats to the Germans and Japanese.

Update on an old story…..
Democratic Congressman’s Career-Killing Outburst Was Engineered by GOP Tricksters

The kids were GOP operatives sent to incite democratic congressman into embarrassing themselves on camera as part of a deliberate and calculated campaign.

They also tried to push Democrats into retirement, using what was described in the presentation as “guerilla tactics” like chasing Democratic members down with video cameras and pressing them to explain votes or positions. (One target, Representative Bob Etheridge of North Carolina, had to apologize for manhandling one of his inquisitors in a clip memorialized on YouTube. Only this week did Republican strategists acknowledge they were behind the episode.)

Please try not to be so patronizing. It’s intensely irritating.

I don’t think they will be effective at changing the 14th amendment, but the passage of the anti-immigrant bill in Arizona shows that there are clear consequences from people who use this line of reasoning.

The law in Oklahoma mandating that women who have been raped and are seeking an abortion must, no matter how much they don’t want to, have a vaginal wand inserted inside them and the fetus described to them in detail, shows that there is more to safeguarding abortion rights than just Roe vs. Wade.

Of course, count me among them. But what I got from you seemed to point to the fact that you see Obama doing exactly what Bush was doing, so he was going to be harassed and possibly brought up on charges for doing that. I was just wondering if the same (or a reasonable facsimile) was going to happen to Bush, since he was doing the “same thing”.

Does Bachman think that it would be better he never travel or just not bring security with him?

Yes, I am sure she does. And if you listen to what she says; any congresscritter who does not think as she does is anti-American, and there should be investigations into that (her words), I often wonder if she would perfectly content if that anti-American (Muslim, foreign born, terrorist loving) president was no more. Remember, she is probably the least sane elected official we have.

And I completely agree with you about travel. It is the job of the president, VP and the first spouses to represent the US all over the world. Mrs. Obama happens to be well liked around the world and it is good for our country to have her represent us. Just as it was with every prior first lady. How can anyone complain about that? It is one of the stupidest rants I see in the blogosphere.

No matter whether you love or hate the president, he is, whether you support him or not, your president (not YOU you, the collective you :-). I feel that when Obama took office, respect for the office of the President of the United States of America went out the window. While I have had problems with (several) presidents past, I never lost respect for the office. And these days, far too many display not just lack of respect but outright hostility for that office. To me, THAT is unAmerican.

And each time they’re defeated, it doesn’t put the issue to rest. The next group of freaks whips up a new one to take its place. Not to mention, measures in several of the states I mentioned are law. Trivializing this does not mean it isn’t a very real threat. It’s happened before. Already.

The GOP has no such scruple, and they have no legislative agenda to speak of. The radical right base wants Obama’s head on a pike, and they will do anything to get it. The GOP was not punished electorally for the impeachment of Clinton, and the party metrics will work towards trying it again.

well, the election is over and conservatism has won and liberalism has been proven wrong. america has been proven a christian nation, including our fellow judeo-christians, but excluding of course atheists who aren’t protected by our wonderful freedom of religion since they don’t have one. yes, G-d has clearly intervened in our affairs - since we know that he is a republican - so so-called “scientists” better take note and stop trying to figure out what He is up to, and keep their fool mouths shut

i think it’s wonderful how now unemployment will go down because those lazy unemployed people will realize that they aren’t going to be able to eat steak and drive cadillacs on endless welfare payments anymore. also, businessmen making over $250k will continue to get tax breaks in their personal income, which will encourage them to hire more people at work because of something something. after all, it’s now been proven that the only thing we need to all be rich forever is less taxes and regulations, which are the only things that are keeping our poor traumatized, emotionally sensitive multinational corporations from running our economy properly, which is their job according to the constitution

yes, liberalism, whatever the hell it is, has been proven wrong and we know we are a christian nation. we should all be good christians now, stop doing atheistic liberal things like ruining this nation by coddling people in trouble and children who have chosen the wrong parents, and follow those golden words of the bible: “when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping”

To clear up some confusion regarding some geekdom earlier this week, on fictional Galactic Emperors,

When discussing Emperors, the first one that usually springs to mind is Emperor Palpatine of the Star Wars series is the first to come to mind in most. First off, lets establish the fact that in the long run, he was a failure. He had no real successor and his Empire promptly broke into numerous warring factions upon his death. There is no evidence of his conquering or expanding the empire, merely imposing his rule over breakaway worlds from the Republic. Length of rule: 20-25 years

The God Emperor of Dune comes next, being named Emperor as the head of the noble house which seized the throne. His longevity and super powers were granted to him via drug use and bonding with an alien life form and his eventual goal was to breed humans who would be able to defeat him and others who shared his precognitive abilites. Length of rule: appx 2000 years.

Finally we have the God Emperor of Mankind. Born around 6,000 BC in what is today known as Turkey, and imbued with the mystic knowledge and traditions of prehistoric shamans, the Emperor was tasked with safeguarding humanity when their true psychic potential was unleashed. For millenia, the Emperor worked behind the scenes, ensuring humanities long term survival and evolution. Approximately 30,000 years after humanity began colonization of other worlds, the Emperor began The Great Crusade to reunite humanity under the Imperial Secular Truth, which lasted several hundred years until the Horus Heresy. Though on lifesupport after the battles, he continues to guide and shield humanity using his psychic abilities. Length of rule: 11,000 years and counting

21 Democrats, 2 independents, 10 Republicans. However, it’s not the numbers, it’s the candidates that matter. For example Hatch, Hutchison, Snowe, and Lugar have already been publicly put in the tea party sites. We saw how well that worked in 2010, but it’s there again. I think Conrad and Klobuchar are at risk. There are hints that Ben Nelson is going to call it a day. Manchin gets to do West Virginia again. But when you get right down to it I’d hesitate to expect gains on either side at this time barring what happens at the presidential level.

If Obama pulls the same sort of non-white male turnout he did in 2008, it’ll carry a bunch of seats. If the turnout is more reflective of 2010, the D’s will lose seats. But the number of seats open doesn’t really matter.

TX has no intention to attempt seceding. It’s bad enough now having to pass customs when returning from, say, France. A trip to LA shouldn’t require such jumping through hoops.

Besides, we actually need some help on the southern border. The situation in Mexico is scary, and we’re apprehensive that the drug wars will metastasize across the Rio Bravo del Norte.

Approximately 30,000 years after humanity began colonization of other worlds, the Emperor began The Great Crusade to reunite humanity under the Imperial Secular Truth, which lasted several hundred years until the Horus Heresy. I knew that Tea Party wins in this election could very well be the downfall of Republicans in 2012 and beyond. From the crazy things they will start trying to do in Washington, to the fact that they will now be seen as major reasons why nothing is getting done (instead of the blame falling on Democrats when they held both houses, even when Republicans really should have shared a very large portion of that blame), to the RINO purges that we all knew would be getting worse.

2012 could very well be another bloodbath … in favor of the Democrats.

Emperor Palpatine made the serious mistake of delagating way too much to Darth Vader, the David Brent (or Michael Scott, for Americans) of the Star Wars universe.

Vader choked to death all the best generals; got Governor Tarkin to go along with his foolish plan of taking the Death Star to the rebel base where the Rebels could conveniently blow it up and be home in time for dinner; commandeered the largest Star Destroyer ever only to fly it right into an asteroid field; tried to recruit the most powerful Force-adept person in the galaxy (and his estranged son) and only ended up cutting off his hand and making him swear to never join the Empire; berated the guy in charge of building the second Death Star for being behind schedule even though it was built in a fraction of the time it took to build the first; and ultimately chucked the Emperor himself down a bottomless shaft.

So I re-read it to see if the 14th was the main issue, it was not. To be nit-picky, it was almost an afterthought, with NO quotes, which tells me the interviewer asked a question, got an answer not terribly perfect for what the interviewer want to project, so the article was written in that manner.

Wow, I apologize for the above sentence. My point about how the bit regarding the 14th is this:
It “may” be taken into consideration is what the article says, and from that, you get that he has made up his mind to amend the constitution.

The Republican Civil War has already begun:

With tea party-backed candidates going down in Delaware, Colorado and Nevada, depriving Republicans of what would have been a 50-50 Senate, a bloc of prominent senators and operatives said party purists like Sarah Palin and Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) had foolishly pushed nominees too conservative to win in politically competitive states.

Movement conservatives pointed the finger right back at the establishment, accusing the National Republican Senatorial Committee of squandering millions on a California race that wasn’t close at the expense of offering additional aid in places like Colorado, Nevada and Washington state, where Democratic Sen. Patty Murray holds a narrow lead as the votes continue to be counted.

The back-and-forth following an otherwise triumphant election amounted to a significant ratcheting up of the internecine battle that has been taking place within the GOP for the past year.

Read it all. It’s rather amusing.

Leto II, God-Emperor of the Known Universe, was emperor for over 4,000 years. Further the development of the Human Universe went exactly according to his plans for the next 27,000 years.

His super powers had a lot to do with being a Kwisatz Haderach as well - but you pointedly omitted that!

Also, his ultimate plan succeeded and saved humanity from th thinking machines. Your boy is still loosing the war and needs to have thousands of psychics sacrificed to his vampiric corpse form to survive, because unlike Leto, who destroyed thousands of assassins, your boy f’d up!

And while we are at it, your boy has grungy space marines in super bulky armor that clearly are overcompensating for something, while the God Emperor has ultra hot, selectively bred to be lethal, lesbian ninjas as well as legions of Saudukar and Fremen.

I not only challenge you to a duel of high geek, but you have been served…

Oh yeah… I went there.

While we are at it, you failed to mention:

The Cylon Emperor from the original BSG… Now there was a badass….

////

Also in the works, an inquisition of the EPA and the resurrection of “Climate-gate”:
[Link: www.latimes.com…]

…Senior congressional Republicans plan to launch a blistering attack on the Obama administration’s environmental policies, as well as on scientists who link air pollution to climate change.

The GOP’s fire will be concentrated especially on the administration’s efforts to use the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority over air pollution to tighten emissions controls on coal, oil and other carbon fuels that scientists say contribute to global warming.

The attack, according to senior Republicans, will seek to portray the EPA as abusing its authority and damaging the economy with needless government regulations.

In addition, GOP leaders say, they will focus on what they see as distortions of scientific evidence regarding climate change and on Obama administration efforts to achieve by executive rule-making what it failed to win from Congress.

Several key Republican Congressmen — most notably Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista), who could take over the chairmanship of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee — have said they plan to investigate climate scientists they contend manipulated data to prove the case that human activity is contributing to global warming.

and

…The primary focus will be on the EPA’s determination last year that carbon dioxide and other emissions endanger public welfare by contributing to climate change. Armed with this finding, the EPA has moved to reduce greenhouse gases by mandating emissions reductions in vehicles and will soon move to regulate stationary sources like power plants and factories.

House Republicans like Issa and James F. Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.) of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming have criticized the EPA for basing its endangerment finding on what they consider flawed research. Republicans assert that the science on climate change is not yet “settled,” despite the vast global scientific consensus about its human causes.

Specifically, Issa has said he wants to investigate the “Climategate” scandal that broke late last year, when hackers illegally obtained and released thousands of emails of climate scientists working with a leading British laboratory.

Climate skeptics, among them House Republicans like Issa, contend that the sniping and harshness in some emails prove that climate scientists suppressed dissenting studies and that science showing the link between greenhouse gases and climate change is biased and tainted.

Like officials within the administration, scientists around the country who expect to be investigated by Issa and others are getting legal advice on how to best protect themselves. Among them is Michael E. Mann, professor of meteorology at Penn State University and one of the researchers who developed the “hockey stick” graph that shows a recent spike in global temperatures.

Issa named Mann in a letter to the EPA as a scientist whose work was not “unbiased, accurate or reliable.”

The next time you hear some Republican claim to be a conservative, ask them why they hate Reagan, Thatcher and Bush senior. Of course, I am pointing to the blinding hypocrisy of the GOP on this. But worse, I am pointing to the fact that even in the 80’s it was clear even to conservatives, that there was a problem. That problem has only gotten worse in the last 30 years.

It is also important to remember that the first serious reports on Global Warming to an American president from the National Academy went to President Johnson in 1965!

The biggest point, which I don’t want to get lost, is that 60 years ago, it was clear to many scientists that AGW is a serious problem. By 50 years ago, the President had been alerted. 20-30 years ago, the data was good enough that people like Reagan, Bush and Thatcher weren’t arguing with it.

The science now is utterly iron clad.

Perhaps 40 years ago, there was still some room for legitimate debate about AGW becoming a major problem - and then only some room. Once Milankovitch cycles were understood in the Seventies and ice core and proxy data combined with Keeling curves, the debate of if it was happening or not and if we were causing it, really began to close.

There was perhaps still some room for calling for more research (just to be sure the effects would be bad enough to warrant serious action) in the early 80s. By the time James Hansen first testified to Congress in the late 80s, there was really not any major doubt left as to the basic science.

As of now, the only people who deny it are paid propagandists for corporate interests, their hacks, their pet politicians and of course the deluded masses who believe those lies and think that this is somehow a Democratic issue only.

Then President Reagan thought it was bad enough that he issued this Joint

You Heretic!

The Cylon Emperor from the original BSG… Now there was a badass…

///

The known univers that Leto ruled was only several hundred worlds. The God Emperor of Mankind rules countless worlds from one side of the galaxy to the other.

Leto died and hoped his plan would survive the millenia.
The God-Emperor of Mankind worked to achieve his goal over eons and still lives to guide his plan.

The only threat to Leto was his own people plotting against him. The God Emperor was faced with the Chaos God, countless alien species, and the destructive powers of the psychic awakening of humanity.

As for forces at their disposal, The God Emperor has the countless billions of the Imperial Guard, Adeptus Sororitas Battle Sisters, 1 million genetically altered Space Marines, the Imperial Assassins, The Inquisition, The Imperial Navy, the Adeptus Mechanicus and their Skitarri Legions, the Titan Legions, and the various Planetary Defense forces to call upon.

Leto would have been squashed like the bug he was.

You are so welcome. So much of the GOP lie machine counts on people just not knowing the facts. It assumes that people will never look at them.

Of course once you do, the sheer depths of mendacity these people go to becomes all the more obvious.

The GOP these days are evil scum.

I guess this is more of that less government I’m always hearing about.

How about that Glenn Beck suggesting ‘Teh Musleems’ may try to assassinate the President. He trying to pull another Tides Foundation deal or what?

Ah, incorrect. I work with a girl who gets $550 a month. Kids can’t eat that much.

That’s less than $20 a day. I’m not feeling particularly incensed about that.

The Senate may never again confirm a single one of President Obama’s judicial nominees, or for that matter a single one of his nominees for anything. Obama may have to use recess appointments for everything. I suspect that the next 2 years (at least) will be pretty discouraging. I do not think the economy will get much better in the next year or two, and there is a decent chance that the Republicans will win the White House in 2012.

229 Eclectic Cyborg  Thu, Nov 4, 2010 3:33:41pm

Wow.

The next two years are going to be VERY interesting to say the least. This is only the very beginning folks.

re: #184 Surabaya Stew

He may have achieved his biggest wins with the Reds, but I still like to remember him from his Tiger days in 1986. (Or at least thats what my 24-year old memories like to tell me!) Like most good managers, he had championship days with only one team*; odd how managing is a success that is so difficult to replicate.

*Correct me if I’m wrong, my baseball knowledge is rusty. :-D

First manager to win a World Series with teams in each league. And his championship Detroit Tiger team was in 1984, not 1986.

I live in Cincinnati, and the amount of bullshit on the radio Thursday was amazing. I think that if he heard it, Sparky would say, “Hey, I had great players, all I had to do was let ‘em play!” He never considered himself any kind of genius, unlike so many managers and general managers today.

That’s what made him a great manager. He took no credit for the wins and full responsibility for the losses.

Jimmy Carter hugs Hamas leader

Completely despicable. This ends any semblance of respect I may have felt for a man who once was a well-intentioned bumbler, but now gives aid and comfort to people whose goal in life is to exterminate an entire nation. He’s sick, senile, and, unfortunately, still alive.

And as for that witch Mary Robinson, may she burn in Hell with her Hamas pals. Soon.
