In India, Obama Announces Deals for $10B in Export, 50K American Jobs

World • Views: 33,204

President Obama’s state visit to India may not have cost $200 million a day, but it certainly is expensive for America’s commander in chief to travel abroad.

No matter what it cost, though, I’d hope most honest observers would admit this is very good news: On Day 1 of India visit, Obama showcases trade deals with US firms.

President Obama made a forceful case for free trade on the first day of his state visit to India, showcasing how trade with India can create US jobs.

He brought with him hundreds of US executives who finalized deals on the sidelines of the trip totaling nearly $10 billion in new US exports. The payoff for Mr. Obama’s argument: 50,000 new American jobs.

‘In our interconnected world, increased commerce between the United States and India can be and will be a win-win proposition for both nations,’ he said at a business summit in Mumbai. Noting that the US exports less to India than to the Netherlands – a country with fewer people than Mumbai – he said, “we can do better than that.”

This is terrible news! Damn his black Kenyan Islamosocialmarxofascist heart! I mean it… umm… well, he must have… surely, there’s some…

Hmm. Gimme a minute here. There’s nothing obvious to spin as a negative.

(grumble grumble)

Hey, Glenn! We’re gonna have to go to Plan B tonight - outright lying!

As President, Obama continues to work hard on behalf of America. At some point, history will have the last word. The period since the financial crash of September 2008 will be a great story of Obama’s very hard work to save the country from financial collapse. It may seem hard to believe right now, but I’m confident that many people, both in America and abroad, will be interested in the true history of the present times. Even before the current visit, Obama has done a lot of work to nurture a positive relationship with India.

So the US has deals worth billions. At least now we know why Glenn Beck and Hannity were so interested in deflecting the attention to the (non)expense, rather than benefits. These guys have no integrity.

People seem to forget very quickly how dire the crisis was. Mr Obama’s administration made some mistakes (especially in hindsight), but things could have been much, much worse.

A picture is worth a thousand words. (From an article about the ECB on Angry Bear.)

Considering that the US was the epicentre of the crisis, and considering the political constraints, I think that the administration’s response to the crisis was quite as effective in protecting GDP; not so effective with regard to jobs, though.

What sounds good is that Obama continues to demonstrate that, unlike a few Republicans and altogether too many Democrats, he understands how the benefits of free trade nearly always outweigh the costs. Memo to senators like Sherrod Brown: thanks for being enemies of the economy.

My brother once had possession of a Porsche 911 that he was supposed to be selling for a guy in Germany, but it was stuck in some kind of bureaucratic limbo, so he drove it from CA to Oregon to try to register it. I got to drive it in the Columbia Gorge. Unfortunately, the experience was kind of wasted on me. It was too much car for me. But I felt like I was in a car commercial.

I have a lot of complaints about Obama’s job performance domestically, but damn! I love him on the world stage. I see him with other world leaders either one-on-one or at the G8 and G20, or when I see him speaking in foreign capitals, I get all puffed up with pride that “yeah! That’s how we grow em here! I thought I was the only person who liked the stuff Vai did with Devin Townsend. The song “Pig” is one of Vai’s best, and Devin is the icing on the cake.

Interestingly enough, the making of that album turned out to be a testament to Frank Zappa’s prowess as a band leader. Vai thought he could contain the enormous egos and energy of the people involved (including Terry Bozzio), and found out the hard way he could not.

It would. Why do you suppose they’re sitting on cash rather than investing it in jobs?

Well, it’s a complex question. Though I would also say that the huge amount of economic uncertainty in the US— with the lack of certitude that the GOP congress will vote to raise the debt limit— may have something to do with it. Some companies will say that they don’t trust that the recession is really over, because they feel it may be masked by government spending. Others— more— will say that it’s the uncertainty that the government will continue to spend as they need to during a recovery from a recession, that the austerity measures being proposed will cause a double-dip recession.

In addition, a lot of companies have been using that money to buy back shares from investors, which increases the earnings-per-share. This is a good investment for them when they can expect that stock price to rise— and it’s almost certain they can, with the combination of a revitalizing economy plus the higher earnings-per-share they’ll get with the repurchased stock. And if the stock price doesn’t rise immediately, fewer shares outstanding means fewer stockholders to placate in the short-term.

Does that help you understand?

I have a little rubber factory and there’s only one way to make me hire: More orders. I don’t care about taxes, health care cost uncertainty or any of that crap other “small businesses” keep citing. I find it impossible to believe that any business that had the demand to hire people wouldn’t do so. I can’t blame them for trying to trick people into lowering taxes for them or anything like that. Problem is, people are buying those bogus claims.

re: #99 stevemcg

That makes sense. I would imagine that for small business owners volume of business is the key.

I’m a little concerned about the new 1099 requirements. My daughter and I have a small business. We both work full time, and our little business takes most of our free time. We barely have time to keep up with regular paperwork, let alone keep up with this. Sounds like they are going to be doing away with it, though.

103 stevemcg  Sat, Nov 6, 2010 4:01:08pm

Also, lowering taxes actually makes an incentive to cut back on expenses to maximize profits. By this, I mean that there is sort of a multiplier effect on the profit margin, where there is a real incentive to cut everything to the bone. Just for example, if my company reports 500K on my K-1 and my effective rate was 35%, I keep 330K. But if I push my employees harder (by letting attrition go unanswered), and maybe shorting on some maintenance issues, and cutting back on certain other things that might improve the quality of the workplace, I will keep 65% of everything I save. However, at a higher effective tax rate, there is less incentive to make those knds of cuts because there would be less to gain.

but letting attrition go unanswered and cutting back and pushing folks harder isn’t going to put more money in your pocket for long. so it’s a shortsighted business owner who looks at incentives in that fashion…

If there’s no demand, what’s the point of expanding production?

Supply-side economics has reached its limit. To everyone who says “leaving more money with the company means they’ll invest and create jobs” — here we have empirical proof that is simply not the case.

The only reason that supply-side crap worked during the Reagan Administration is because interest rates and inflation back then were both well into the double digits — holding money was very very stupid then; buy something or pay down debt, just get it the hell out of your own wallet as quick as possible.

re: #104 MurphysMom

Not this year! Those numbers were for example’s sake (and fantasy). My sektit strategy is to be the last rubber company standing, then I’ll make a killing. Either that or I’ll have to become a salesman, but that’ snot my bag. Last year was terrible. This year is just bad. Our customers seem to be coming out of their hibernation. I actually came within a few hours of shutting down. I was out of money, I had been paying the employees out of my own pocket. I had receivables, but there was only one juicy one, from a respectable multinational corporation, but it was over two years old and the payable office was out of the country. (>15,000 bucks) The only thing I had going for me was an order worth 50 dollars. So I dragged my feet and dragged my feet on this little order. Well, it’s payday and I can’t make payroll. All of a sudden, at about 10am we start getting requests for quotes for this part from other rubber companies (our name is on the print). At about 11am somebody from an office in Wisconsin calls to see what the problem was. At noon there was a new A/P manager in Mexico and at about 2:30 the money appeared in the bank account. Moral of the story? If a fifty dollar order caused them this big a headache, I should be charging a lot more for these bumpers than I am now.

i don’t doubt it. however, we have to craft policies which support relatively smart business practices, and let the not-smart folks do as they will…as you clearly understand all too well, it’s tough enough to keep a business afloat even when you do things the right way. doing them wrong, in a prolonged fashion, is an additional headwind that is almost impossible to survive.

Your story pretty much scared me back to “play it safe” mode. I’d like to open a small shop, but my fear is not having enough orders to pay the bills.

On the other hand, the moral of your story rings true. I recently raised prices 20% after agonizing over it for months. And I partly did it because I’d been so busy I was up til 3 every morning, and thought that raising prices would mean fewer or smaller orders. None of my customers batted an eye at the increase.

I’ll help you out with a definition of the word “diplomacy”

Diplomacy is the art and practice of conducting negotiations between representatives of groups or states. It usually refers to international diplomacy, the conduct of international relations through the intercession of professional diplomats with regard to issues of peace-making, trade, war, economics, culture, environment and human rights. International treaties are usually negotiated by diplomats prior to endorsement by national politicians. In an informal or social sense, diplomacy is the employment of tact to gain strategic advantage or to find mutually acceptable solutions to a common challenge, one set of tools being the phrasing of statements in a non-confrontational, or polite manner.

I thought Obama was against outsourcing jobs? Personally I like the whole notion of trading off US exports to India (as long as the US doesn’t have a net loss in the trade) but he can’t really have it both ways, can he?

And I call BS on India’s claims of more jobs created in the US than outsourced:

Cornell and U Mass found that in 2001 there were over 201,000 jobs outsourced from America. (Myers, L., 2004) During that same time frame unionized jobs fell by 39% and other production type jobs fell 29%. Many of those were white collar service jobs or IT type jobs. The vast majority of those lost could be captured in India as their employment rate grew by nearly the same number as those lost in the USA. By 2004 the number of jobs outsourced was more than 406,000 and rising. Unionized jobs lost due to outsourcing at that time were over 69% with no abatement in sight.

First, everyone say a big, big thank you to Robert Blackwill. He’s the poet and ambassador that spearheaded the remarkable turnaround in India-US relations under George W. Bush. Not enough people mention him - but he’s way more important to this day than any President.

Second, these kinds of trips generally produce nothing that wasn’t already in the works for some time. Doesn’t matter whose trip, by which country leader, to which country. So measuring the trip by deals is simply dumb.

India-US trade has been trending upward for some time now. That’s what the volume of deals really tells you. Again, please offer some thanks to Mr. Blackwill, but there are also larger forces at work like Silicon Valley that go beyond any political figure.

I’ll add that in my field, the $5 billion or so in defense agreements have been on the go for over a year. Boeing had no competitors the Indians wanted to deal with. India has acquired an allergy to more Russian equipment (so, no more IL-76s), and the A400M is unready, over-budget, and far less capable - so C-17 it is. GE won on the merits in a hard fought contest with the Eurofighter’s EJ200 jet engine, so a GE F414 engine will power the new Tejas fighter Mk2, just as an earlier F404 engine powers the Tejas Mk1.

Obama had zero to do with either. Both moves were announced ahead of this visit, and both Boeing and GE must still finalize actual contracts (the visit didn’t accomplish that).

The value of a Presidential trip is the larger strategic relationship with India. Which is so important that anyone who says “it costs too much, so he shouldn’t go,” is crazy. Though you might say “it costs too much, glad he’s going but what’s wrong with this guy?”
