Music • Views: 28,030

Tonight’s musical interlude features the kind of performance that traumatizes guitar players: Paul Gilbert doing “Will My Screen Door Stop Neptune” from his new album Fuzz Universe.External Image

The guitar solo in this one is a jaw-dropping example of Shreddus Maximus. Listening to it may cause permanent alterations to your genome.

I have a new page up - eviscerating and I do mean eviscerating our favorite nutty Lord, Monckton.

It is sort of the ultimate resource for taking that clown down.

Dr. John Abraham of St. Thomas University in Minnesota, a researcher into thermal fluids, took the time to utterly and thoroughly debunk "Lord" Christopher Monckton and the pseudo science, open lies and distortions he peddles. He made a presentation and gave a talk that utterly debunks Monkton's trash. What makes this presentation so amazing is that he tracked down each false slide of Monkton's and each cherry picked quote. This is the single most thorough and academic evisceration of Monkton's fraud I have ever seen.

As the proprietor of the Used CD Store across the street, himself a guitarist, would say, "Oh, he's one of those wailey-wailey guitarists." I don't know whether I spelled that correctly.

Good stuff. The problem, as I see it, is that those who follow Monkton will just dismiss the data as "self-serving babble by a university leftist". They won't listen, because that would mean admitting their error.

Perhaps, but others will listen and the way to fight a liar is to prove he is a liar.

9 Charles Johnson  Mon, Nov 8, 2010 5:35:40pm

In the solo he plays a string of uninterrupted 32nd notes for about 20 seconds, and it sounds like he's picking every one. It's pretty astounding.

cool! - impinges on the fusion universe in that some of the arpeggios in his tune remind me a bit of mahavishnu's inner mounting flame, although his playing is very different than mclaughlin's. quite the technician with that intense articulation!

I don't want a gun, I just want a new TV.

I put my dough board in the window where the robbers gained access. That is a heavy board and the window don't open even if they break the lock.

'How NHS chiefs let 1200 die'

NHS bosses failed to tackle blunders that led to the deaths of up to 1,200 patients, a public inquiry heard yesterday.

The accusation was made on the opening day of the full investigation into one of Britain's biggest health care scandals.

Mid-Staffordshire NHS Trust chiefs, doctors and nurses will have to explain why patients were often left starving and lying in their own filth without water or pain relief. But the inquiry was delayed when furious Will O'Neil, whose dad died in the trust's care, staged a protest.

He refused to move from a lawyer's chair after victims' families were excluded from the main hearing room at Stafford Council's HQ.

Julie Bailey, who founded campaign group Cure The NHS after losing her mother at Stafford hospital, said: "Will lost his dad in 2008 and hasn't got any answers as to what happened.

"He wasn't happy with arrangements and felt he was left out of the process." Appalling standards at the trust's Stafford and Cannock Chase hospitals led to the horrific death toll between 2005 and 2008.

Inquiry chairman Robert Francis QC said: "We are here because of the terrible service inflicted on so many patients and their families."

Leading counsel Tom Kark QC added: "The purpose is to focus on how it was allowed to go on so long."

Wonderful socialist health care in the UK!

Israeli scholar completes translation of Talmud. The project took 45 years of 16-hour work days to finish.

After 45 years of 16-hour work days, an Israeli scholar has finally completed his life's work — a translation of the entire Talmud, one of Judaism's most important texts, to make it accessible to ordinary people.
Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz began his translation and commentary on the Talmud in 1965. This week he is publishing the last book of his 46-volume series.
Steinsaltz has written some 60 books on subjects like zoology and theology, but his translation of the Talmud from Aramaic to Hebrew, adding his own comments, marks his crowning achievement.

The monumental work gives modern Jews a glimpse into the often obscure texts of the detailed rabbinical commentaries on biblical laws that obligate observant Jews.
In a radio interview Monday, Steinsaltz said his motto is: "Let my people know."

What's stopping you from moving to what you think is a better country?

The fact that I live in an awesome and vibrant and incredible city, that far far far makes up for the fact that the country as a whole is full of people throwing tantrums based on what they hear from mouthbreathers on talk radio.

Note that Portland does a lot differently than almost any other city in the US...which not coincidentally makes it a better place to live.

All politics is local, you see. And My local politicians are awesome. They're smart wonks with advanced degrees, some with three or four advanced degrees. They don't steer the country, but they steer my town, and my town rocks, so here I am!

And if it does I will be wagging my finger at Obama for being a bad liberal and shouting my head off at the Republicans for being jackasses.

Dark, please do not call our attempts to allow people of homosexual orientation who love their country enough to want to live and die defending it either at home or abroad just "a stunt".

Nancy Pelosi was not riding a motorcycle through a flaming ring for votes, she was trying to secure a basic human right for people who have been denied it for far too long...

How dare you call health care a basic human right? Only the Europeans, Canadians, Japanese and South Koreans believe such nonsense. Why would we want to be lumped in with such losers?

The idea is that when Liberals think we aren't being represented by the people in power we get depressed and stay stay home and don't bother to vote, which leads to the conservative base showing up to vote and taking over.

Because I think it will be badly received by the troops. Right now the Army is predominately rural, and the South is also over-represented. I worry that gayness being introduced will cause troops we need to leave and hurt our recruiting numbers. We need effective soldiers and right now they mostly come from socially conservative places.

By the way Dark nothing personal, but would I be wrong to say the following might have been said Circa 1940 or so....

First, that raises my hackles a little, since that is exactly the reasoning that was given not to integrate--and now, I doubt many soldiers we want can imagine an unintegrated service.

Secondly, I seriously do not think that troops will leave over this. These guys are already serving with gay soldiers, and they know it. They'll stomp off in a hissy if it's not a secret any more?

i dunno, man. we should keep this discussion to a dull roar so that passions don't get too inflamed. further, about the only belief i feel comfortable spurning in our armed forces is that the person to the left or to the right is somehow unworthy to serve despite their being physically qualified.

Absolutely. One of the things I admire so much about the military is the importance of mission above prejudice. I see no reason to believe that service members won't fall in line, just as they always do. These men and women are risking their lives! Do people really believe that sharing quarters with openly gay (just to remember that is the issue, gays are still in, just closeted) soldiers is scarier than risking your life, limb, perhaps sanity for your country?

And, because I know the south is always mentioned as the uneducated rubes who cannot accept differences, I need to say that is not my experience. My mother and her entire side of the family live in central Tennessee. At least for my cousins my age, there is no question that gays should be able to serve and there won't be massive problems. That the military is better than that. And these are people who are by NO means liberal. Complete meltdowns on Facebook after Obama's election and the passing of healthcare and a myriad of other issues. But on gays serving in the military? No arguments.

DADT is a terrible, outdated policy that is actively hurting people in the military. It's bigotry, it's ugly, and it has to go.

The defense that we need bigotry to keep some marginal soldiers who won't want to serve any more once it's no longer a straight man's army cuts no bait with me at all. They can hit the road, if they really exist.

James used the F-word to refer to someone be discharged from the armed forces. That's not really the same thing.

I don't even mean for them to be discharged from the armed forces.

I mean "F*** them and don't let the door hit their asses on the way out. If they would quit because we've let gays in and served openly, then the sooner our army sees the last of them, the better off we are..."

Saying that military supports anti-gay bigotry equals hate for the military? In other words the only "correct" answer is to say the military does not. Because to acknowledge the institutional homophobia equals hatred for the military.

Poisoning the well

Poisoning the well (or attempting to poison the well) is a logical fallacy where adverse information about a target is pre-emptively presented to an audience, with the intention of discrediting or ridiculing everything that the target person is about to say. Poisoning the well can be a special case of argumentum ad hominem, and the term was first used with this sense by John Henry Newman in his work Apologia Pro Vita Sua.

I'm not seeing any hate for the military, NJD, but a lack of respect for any military folks who would be so traumatized by having to serve with gay folks that they would leave (or not enlist in the first place) - unlike DF, I suspect that is a very small group of people.

Honestly, the south is just family to me. In the way that I can say mean things about my mom, but no one else can? Yeah, that is pretty much exactly how I feel about the south. I live in Boston now, and I love it (Rhode Islander originally), but please, spare me from the liberals up here who live in one of the most segregated cities in the world. I told a school friend of mine how much I loved Charleston, South Carolina and would love to live there, and her response was "Can't you just feel the racism??!". I was floored. We go to a law school that has 10 black students in a population of 900, in a city that tops the list of segregated systems.

As far as inbreeding goes, well its Tennessee, so you know, even in the south I know its reputation. Anyway, my grandmother was really into genealogy and made sure to let me know that my grandfather's ancestors married first cousins, but that was totally normal in those small mountain towns. The uniform itself endows a certain degree of respect on a man, above and beyond his own deeds.

If he fucks up badly, it goes the other way too, because he has not just disgraced himself, but the uniform and what it represents.

This all goes for girls, too, but the gender-neutral language makes it seem less solemn and stuff.

Everything would still be based on personalities -- the individual. In most cases fellow soldiers won't know a thing if they're dealing with a private individual. Most people are too caught up in their own lives to care about who their peers are having sex with.

The bigots in uniform I feel should be forced to deal with something else entirely... making the choice between putting up or shutting up on their bigotries as they find themselves serving along side openly gay and lesbian soldiers...

re: #298 Dark_Falcon

Because I think it will be badly received by the troops. Right now the Army is predominately rural, and the South is also over-represented. I worry that gayness being introduced will cause troops we need to leave and hurt our recruiting numbers. We need effective soldiers and right now they mostly come from socially conservative places.

Right now more than two-thirds of Americans want DADT to be repealed, including a clear majority of conservatives.

How is your point different from the arguments used in the 1940s to keep the military segregated by race? The only difference I see is that public opinion back then supported segregation. Now the public opposes DADT.

Placating bigotry shouldn't be a viable option.

If soldiers (and prospective soldiers) can't put their love of country and drive to serve it through the armed forces above personal distaste and hatred for what other soldiers do in their private lives (legally), then I'd rather they choose not to serve/enlist.
