ADL Denounces Glenn Beck

Media • Views: 24,792

Glenn Beck has been on a really over the top hate campaign against George Soros this week, and today the Anti-Defamation League weighed in on Beck’s false claims about Soros’s childhood: Glenn Beck’s Remarks About Soros And The Holocaust ‘Completely Inappropriate and Offensive’.

New York, NY, November 11, 2010 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today criticized as “completely inappropriate and offensive” remarks by Glenn Beck on his radio and television programs, in which he inaccurately connected George Soros, who was then a young boy, to the actions of others in sending Jews to death camps during the Holocaust.

On his November 10 radio show, Beck described how Soros, who was born in Hungary to Orthodox Jewish parents, “used to go around with this anti-Semite and deliver papers to the Jews and confiscate their property and then ship them off.  And George Soros was part of it.  He would help confiscate the stuff.  It was frightening.  Here’s a Jewish boy helping send the Jews to the death camps.”

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director and a Holocaust survivor, issued the following statement:

Glenn Beck’s description of George Soros’ actions during the Holocaust is completely inappropriate, offensive and over the top.  For a political commentator or entertainer to have the audacity to say – inaccurately – that there’s a Jewish boy sending Jews to death camps, as part of a broader assault on Mr. Soros, that’s horrific.

While I, too, may disagree with many of Soros’ views and analysis on the issues, to bring in this kind of innuendo about his past is unacceptable.  To hold a young boy responsible for what was going on around him during the Holocaust as part of a larger effort to denigrate the man is repugnant.

The Holocaust was a horrific time, and many people had to make excruciating choices to ensure their survival.  George Soros has been forthright about his childhood experiences and his family’s history, and there the matter should rest.

UPDATE at 11/11/10 2:16:37 pm:

This is not the first time the ADL has made note of Glenn Beck’s paranoid hate-mongering: ADL Special Report: A Year of Growing Animosity.

Good going, ADL.

Now, the next step in the Classic Antisemitic Campaign #22(TM) is for Beck to declare that the ADL is obviously corrupt since it's standing up for Soros, and to cast doubts on their legitimacy as a Jewish organization.

If you're interested in reading an amazingly harrowing book about survival in the Holocaust-- the appropriately named Survival in Auschwitz is incomparable.

Written by one of the gentlest souls of all time, Primo Levi.

No real charity in Beck's remarks.

All this proves is that the ADL is a front group for George Soros' insidious fascist ideological take-over of America. You can all about this, and more, in my latest book "Secret Je... errr... BANKER Puppermasters Who Are Stealing Your Wealth and Raping Your Women", available at all fine book stores, and by signing up as an elite member at my website, [Link: www.crazyassrevisionisthistory.ly,...] where Nick Schroeder University will tell you all about how the Holocaust was organized and carried out by small Jewish children, and also how the slaves fought the hardest for the Confederacy, because the beds were soft. And now, please stay tuned for a word from our sponsors....

The American dollar is shrunken to the point of worthlessness.... so what are you doing holding on to all of your worthless American dollars? If you were smart, you would give them to us... in exchange for GOLD! Why would we want to exchange a currency we just called worthless for precious metals? Well, forget about that.... INFLATION! BAILOUTS! WOLVERINES!

Media matter noticed something yesterday...
"That's it": Glenn Beck runs out of anti-Soros material mid-show

We were promised revelations that would essentially bend our minds, details that would have us riveted to our TV screens, and vital information that would push us to breathlessly share information with our friends and neighbors. Instead, it appears as if Glenn Beck just ran out of steam right in the middle of his second anti-Soros show. The first hint of this was Beck unfurling a scroll with the names of groups that Soros has donated to, because... well, he donates a lot of money. To things.

Beck promised at least two (and possibly three days) of anti-Soros conspiracies. The second show didn't have anything new and he ran out of recaps half way through the second show. Also he dropped the spooky Soros puppet master graphic for the second show. I think Fox (of Fox Lawyers) cracked down on him after the first hour. It was really insane stuff.

Murdoch discovered a long time ago that a way to make lots of money is to appeal to the basest of human instincts. It ought to be no surprise that Fox News now is proceeding down the same path of any other late-night radio show, seedy gossip column, or fringe newsletter. It is also pretty clear that the reason Murdoch hired Beck away from CNN, just like the reason Murdoch just hired Dobbs, was to appeal to the conspiratorial mind set of a large subset of the American TV viewing audience.

How the few remaining echoes of "journalism" at Fox News copes with the true nature of that enterprise is anybody's guess. I really don't know how a serious, life-long journalist would feel about being associated with the Murdoch/Ailes enterprise.

It's typical of people like Beck. Disagree with someone and they have to become evil personified. Beck is basically saying a guy who was thirtteen years old when the Nazis invaded his country is complicit with Nazi war crimes and for that Glenn Beck can go fuck himself. I am sick of Beck calling everyone who disagrees with him a Nazi and thinking he's some kind of victim. He's not. He's a sleazy propagandist who lives on drivign fear and paranoia in to hie viewers while he collects a fat check.

Disappointing sales and profit forecasts from Cisco Systems Inc. show cutbacks in government spending that pose risks for companies that rely on the sector for growth...

...The challenges for Cisco, which gets about 22 percent of its business from the public sector, may signal broader risks for businesses that depend on government spending. Companies in technology, construction and health care draw revenue from state and local governments, which reduced their spending in the third quarter and cut into U.S. economic growth.

but this is unpossible according to republican economic theory, which declares that government spending never creates jobs, which are only created by private enterprise because of turtles all the way down

Posted this one downstairs, but since we now have an actual Glenn Beck thread, it's worth noting here, and illustrates the level of the deranged mentality Beck has regarding Soros:

From today's radio show:
Beck blames Soros for his low polling for Time Person of the Year

At the time of this morning's broadcast he was dead last (18%) on Time Magazine's "influence" rating. However, it appears that the right-wing blogs are starting to flood the poll, as he's now sitting at 55% - which is still well off the leaders. Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert currently lead polling at 87%, a full 10% over second place.

Can imagine living through that time.

Can more easily imagine not living through it. Most didn't. Anatoly Kuznetsov, (now A. Anatol), wrote in Babi Yar of his own experiences. Three times he was shot at, with intent to kill. Three times, the gun misfired.

That's worse odds than playing Russian roulette three times with all but one chamber loaded.

Now, getting down to Soros' situation, it's true that he delivered those notices. He was 13. He checked with his father, what should I do, and his father said, deliver them, but tell the recipients what will happen if they comply.

We excuse Ratzinger for having played his little and relatively innocent role in Nazi Germany---to be conscripted into the armed forces of Germany was the destiny of every male old enough to pick up a rifle and point it. We must in fairness excuse almost anything almost anybody did when young and helpless, under circumstances where death was more likely than not. Children aren't expected to be heroes, though they sometimes surprise us.

Beck has said a lot of things already that he shouldn't have said, but this is truly disgraceful. It twists the truth obscenely. Soros did nothing wrong.

35 lostlakehiker  Thu, Nov 11, 2010 3:02:12pm

While we're at it, a friend and colleague from Ukraine told me of his grandfather's experience. When the war broke, the class of 1941 was called up from his village, and committed to battle. In 1945, one man came back missing a leg. One, missing an arm. Grandfather came back with several bullet scars but all his parts still there. That was all, ----

I think people should speak more openly about his narcissism. A general rule of thumb for me: If someone thinks they should be Time Person of the Year, they have WAY too big an ego.

While doing a paper, I cam across an interesting (and encouraging) statistic. While 43% of Americans have a negative view of Islam, in the past, Jewish Immigrants had an even harder time, with a majority of people in first part of the last century having openly anti-semitic ideas. As much Muslim-Bashing as there is, it could be worse. To summarize, I think we, the tolerant, are f***ing winning.

By the way, after serious contemplation, discussions with friends, and talking to a local pastor and Imam on theology and other matters, I will become a Sunni Muslim. I don't know if you all remember the religious issues I had earlier.

50 Charles Johnson  Thu, Nov 11, 2010 3:19:57pm

I can understand anyone wanting to know about George Soros's doings, because the guy really has been involved in some pretty iffy business dealings, and he really does pump a significant amount of money into political causes. I wanted to know more when I heard about George Soros years ago, just like I wanted to know more when I started hearing about the Koch Brothers.

But Beck has been taking it to the level of a superheated conspiracy theory.

51 (I Stand By What I Said Whatever It Was)  Thu, Nov 11, 2010 3:21:10pm

Another thing I had to think about, watching this: Glenn Beck's frequent repetition of his stick of telling the audience: "Don't take my word for it! Do your own homework! Look this stuff up yourself! Go to the original sources!" But if people did, then they would inevitably find out that Beck was telling them bullshit. So when Beck is saying this, he has to assume that his audience will never actually follow his call to do serious intellectual ground work. He is just telling it to soothe the audience. Amazingly, a lot of people give him credit for that; I guess for him to say "Don't trust me!" it automatically makes him more trustworthy in the eyes of some. Kinda like saying "judeo-christian", it's one of these deeply disingenuous phrases...

For the record you were right about the plane.

I had honestly discounted the possibility that anyone would see ten minutes of footage and say it was a missile and that multiple people seeing it - including defense "experts" who opined it was a missile as well - would fail to notice the fact that it stayed in that view for ten minutes.

Most posters on this board had something of a flip-out over what they perceived to be Foxman's comments concerning the Cordoba House matter, and accused him of taking a bigoted anti-Muslim position. His full statement at the time, however, was very explicit in condemning those whose position on the subject was motivated by religious intolerance and indicating that his view on the matter was solely a function of sympathy for the victims of 9/11. While one may disagree with the position he took - and clearly the view on LGF was overwhelmingly opposed to his position -- and one may even describe his position as unfortunate given ADL's raison d'etre as an organization dedicated to combatting intolerance, Foxman's actual statement was hardly a raving "flip-out".

Nor would it be accurate, as another poster did, to place Foxman in the "Obama is evil" camp, which suggests that he is a fellow traveler to the Geller/Spencer/Beck camp. While Foxman is very clearly of the opinion that President Obama is no true friend of Israel, his public statements hardly suggest that he is of the "wingnut" variety.

re: #48 researchok

Foxman is a good guy, overall.

In a lot of ways he got skewered over the mosque remarks- undeservedly so.

His statement got tossed in with all the other anti mosque remarks when they should not have been. While I didn't happen to agree, Foxman's statement was not Gelleresque in the least.

Sometimes demanding ideological purity can go a bit too far.

I think he got swept up in the moment, and I think he picked the wrong side. I disagree with him on that matter.

Beck is the worst kind of hypocrite because he deals in half truths or sins of omission.

Soros' failures- and they are many and profound- are his own and do not need phony amplification.

Beck on the other hand portrays himself as a purveyor of truth and that only highlights his own intellectual shortcomings and lack of truthfulness.

73 RadicalModerate  Thu, Nov 11, 2010 3:38:46pm

As if we didn't have enough problems of creeping stupidity around here with the book tours of Gov. Rick Perry and George W Bush. It appears that the collective IQ of the Dallas area was lowered a few points last night when Sarah Palin swung thru town, complete with a factually-challenged anti-abortion speech. She spoke to a local religious group who got into legal trouble a few years back for deceptive business practices regarding their "crisis pregnancy" clinics which were advertised as having abortion services, but actually subjected women to their (at times graphic) anti-abortion rhetoric.

At Dallas event, Sarah Palin says new health care law could lead to more abortions

The former Alaska governor urged the audience to hold elected officials accountable, particularly those in Congress who "caved at the last minute" as the health care law was approved.

She said that President Barack Obama's executive order prohibiting the use of federal funds for abortion after the health care bill was passed was nonbinding. She added that the administration later made federal funds available for high-risk insurance pools in some states that allow elective abortions.

"The biggest advance of the abortion industry in America has been the passage of Obamacare," she said.

Democratic National Committee spokesman Hari Sevugan took issue with Palin's characterizations.

"Ms. Palin must be talking about some other health care bill, because the one that was signed into law did no such thing as ... independent fact-checking organizations have definitively concluded," Sevugan said.

"There should be room for disagreement in our public debates, but there shouldn't be room for making things up."

Palin also said residents should monitor the government on issues affecting the culture of life, saying "they may get a little desperate to cram some things through."

Can you imagine the threats Soros receives? At least one Beck-inspired terrorist has already gone after the Tides Foundation, and that is only a minor Soros front in the Beck conspira-verse.
Anyone who is publicly known to be a billionaire will have to take fairly elaborate security measures even without the media recklessly inciting a paranoid mass movement against them. I don't know what kind of security Soros has, and don't want to know, but it is probably more akin to what heads of state have than to anything that would be usual for private citizens. The only substantial difference is that he is not obligated to appear in public, and he doesn't, at least not very often. He is probably furtive and secretive not because he is some kind of sinister Dr. Evil, but for his own safety.
I don't like a lot of what Soros has done, but it is a disgrace that his wholly legal political activism has made him a virtual prisoner in a bubble of security. It is a pretty cushy prison, no doubt, but I would rather live in an old trailer and be free to walk the streets than be a prisoner in the most luxurious mansion.

Like others on this comments section, I recall that Soros may have cooperated in some way with the Nazis. I actually may recall that Soros made some callous comment about this many decades later, although these are vague memories. But it's one thing for me to say that I have some vague memories, and quite another for Glenn Beck, on national television, to a very wide audience, to go over the top about Soros. I agree that Glenn Beck is behaving appallingly, as he often does.

I'll tell you the path that brought me to this point religiously. Although I go to OU, I've lived much of my life in Colorado Springs. As time went on, I got involved in a church group in a large evangelical church. At the same time, I was reading up on history and learned a little about the world. However, during the 2004 Election, the church group I was in became very political, and I began to have doubts about faith in general. Eventually, a speaker from India came in and spoke to the group, and was saying how Hinduism and Islam were ruining India. Being a little 9th Grader, I didn't know the details of the history, but did know that colonialism has played a much bigger role in the state of India today. At that point, my faith flamed out, and I became de-facto atheist for a while. However, as I learned about other religions, I learned what the Muslims thought on Jesus, and gradually drifted back towards Christianity, though by this point I no longer believed in the Trinity, and was a Nontrinitarian (When I lived in Colorado Springs, I never met anyone of a religion other than Christianity, or those who were Atheist. Make of that what you will). When I came to OU, I eventually became involved in a Southern Baptist church because of the kind hearts and the people. I was able to ignore the issues I had with the Trinity, I guess by repression (My best friend recently did some gentle criticism of my ability to repress doubts, feelings, and thoughts, rightly so looking at it.). Then about 2 months ago, the churches atmosphere became much more acidic towards disagreement, and I began to feel like I didn't belong anymore. As a result of this, everything I reviewed my thoughts again, and did some more research into Islam. This time however, I was able to actually find Muslims to talk to about theology in close proximity. In doing so, I began to believe much more in Islam. The few doubts I had were extinguished by the Imam I was referred to by my big at APO, and I decided Sunni Islam is my path.

Slightly related, my younger sister is has turned into a flat-out atheist in Colorado Springs in the last two years. I believe Colorado Springs somehow actually has the effect of damaging ones faith unless it is exetremely strong, or belongs to a few narrow band of theology.

For the record you were right about the plane.

I had honestly discounted the possibility that anyone would see ten minutes of footage and say it was a missile and that multiple people seeing it - including defense "experts" who opined it was a missile as well - would fail to notice the fact that it stayed in that view for ten minutes.

I honestly didn't think it was possible for so many newsies and "experts" to miss something so obvious.

None the less, I was mistaken when I thought it was a missile and you should get credit for having better intuition about that situation than I did.

People will believe anything if it serves to protect their deepest convictions -- even if it goes against their own knowledge and/or expertise. A friend of mine is an army veteran and he had no problem at all buying into all of the overinflated numbers, including that of military vehicles, that the right-wing media was hawking.

It really is disturbing how easy it is for some people to gloss over their own cognitive dissonance.

By the time you reach your 90's there will be whole new class of drugs to address cardiac and cognitive issues.

You'll be able to take up sky diving at 85 and your kids and grandkids won't be able to get you declared incompetent so as to get the cash, jewels and silver.

You'll probably live to 120.

Haven't you been paying attention? The ObamaCare death panels will make sure nobody lives into their 90's, and Nancy Pelosi will personally make sure that nobody has any cash, jewels or silver left for the kids and grandkids to fight over.

Well said - and true. But in this case, a truly vital bit of information that anyone who saw the footage had - i.e. how long it was, was completely left out of the picture.

This is something so utterly obvious, that my assumption was that they knew they were not looking at a plane when they reported.

You see I honestly thought they would have a lick of common sense. If it left their view in say 30 seconds, its a missile (almost) for sure.

But, if it left in 10 minutes, its absolutely a plane. End of story. Nothing else to say.

I had assumed that people reporting on this would know that, and I was certain that some pentagon person would say so right away - like instantly. The fact that no one did say so, led me to assume that they only saw it for a short time.

What I am trying to communicate is that they rather openly lied and held information back to make a story when their own information made it a non starter. They ran with it anyway and they fooled me, because I still believed that all those people involved could not be that dishonest.

The lesson here is that no they really are that dishonest. I am never ever going to forget that they really are that mendacious.

I have a friend who's been told she basically can never donate again, because she's slept with a man who's slept with another man since 1979. That man would be her husband, so you can see that no matter how much she wants to donate, six months abstinence EACH TIME is a bit much.

There are a couple of interpretations of this verse.

I got my verses confused what I told you about eish aish and eisha is still true.

BUt, in this verse, now that I am looking at it directly and my memory is jogged there is a, long history of interesting interpretation.

The one I go by is just the simple idea that men and women are both created int eh image of G-d and different types of the same species (man) which has just been created.

However, there is an idea that this means that Adam started out as both male and female at the same time and the the seperation with the rib was actually separating out the male and female physically.

There is also a discussion about this being the origin of Adam's first wife who he rejected.

The problem is that the creation of man is given twice, in slightly different forms:

New International Translation for Genesis 1:27:

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

What's translated there as 'mankind' is 'ha-adam', literally 'the human being', but as you can see, they are treated as a plural.

Genesis 2:7 reads:

Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

Once again, the word used is 'adam'.

Why the tale is told twice is a complicated matter much discussed by scholars in various fields. The religious explanation I like best is that while a variety of male and female humans are actually created and set down in the world, we learn only the personal stories of one pair and their descendents, so that no one will be able to say to another that his lineage from the Creation is more important.

The word 'ish', meaning 'man', in any case, does not show up until Adam says of his wife that she will be 'isha' because she was taken out of 'ish'--and some people say that the 'adam' itself simply isn't gendered until it becomes two.

Sorry, my reply got lost in the grey...

My query is, if it relates specifically to Adam and Eve, then it was only 'them' who were created in the image of G-d.

Following on from that, 'we' are then pro created from a sinful Adam, not 'Created in the image of G-d'

If not why not?

I would say that the text's most obvious meaning is that 'we' are all in God's image.

Sort of the point is that it is not Adam and Eve exactly as in the definite article but rather to be read as the first human - or even the spiritual essence of the first human .

The general idea to take from it is that something spiritual about both mean and women is made in the image of G-d.

This is that Divine spark or soul. That is where you get into the entire idea of humans being more than atoms and molecules - well one of the places. The theme is repeated.

We hold for instance that G-d is completely incorporeal. He has no hand as Ramabam rather famously put it.

So whatever it is about us, that is in His image, is not physical.

re: #167 SanFranciscoZionist

Excellent work SFZ and right on the money.

I would say that the text's most obvious meaning is that 'we' are all in God's image.

That is the one the Rabbaim would take also:

Akiva Avot 3:16

14. He would also say: Beloved is man, for he was created in the image [of G-d]; it is a sign of even greater love that it has been made known to him that he was created in the image, as it is says, "For in the image of G-d, He made man" (Genesis 9:6). Beloved are Israel, for they are called children of G-d; it is a sign of even greater love that it has been made known to them that they are called children of G-d, as it is stated: "You are children of the L-rd your G-d" (Deuteronomy 14:1). Beloved are Israel, for they were given a precious article; it is a sign of even greater love that it has been made known to them that they were given a precious article, as it is stated: "I have given you a good purchase; My Torah, do not forsake it" (Proverbs 4:2).

Which reminds me, for no particular reason, of an Israeli blogger I sometimes read, and the time his small son had his tonsils taken out.

You should understand that the Hebrew for 'tonsils' is 'shkedim', which literally means 'almonds' as well.

This is why when the blogger explained in Hebrew what had been going on with the family to a very pious neighbor lady who is working on her English, she exclaimed, "Ah, he had his nuts removed!"

He had to explain. He couldn't have her going around in the world thinking that was the English for getting your tonsils out.

i'm fascinated by the system that semitic languages have where there is a 3 (or sometimes 2) consonant abstract root with a basic meaning, that is instantiated any number of ways with vowels and the addition of other particles. for example:

arabic SLM - peace, submission

salaam - peace

islam - submission

muslim - one who submits

More and more people now realize naked body scanners are not about protection from terrorists, as the government claims, but is in fact a technology designed for control and data collection. If the government is going to be successful implementing its control grid, it will have to introduce technology that can be touted as physically non-threatening

In terms of women's health, douching - contrary to the "oh so fresh feeling" marketing malarkey - is completely unnecessary, destroying the vagina's natural, healthy pH balance and leaving women more vulnerable to infections.

So, what better word to describe a person who, while pretending to be important and righteous, is actually useless at best, harmful and destructive at worst? :)

Lots of stupid stuff is popular. Popular doesn't mean good. It usually means loved by an abundance of twits.

In the case of Titanic - 13 year old girls, who have hopefully grown out of it.

I recall seeing it with my brother and now sister in law. My now sister in law said - didn't the actual boat go down in a much shorter time than this movie?

We knew she was a keeper :)

ah, old movies

i nominate His Girl Friday

Great flick...

OK if we are going to go silver screen - or at least pre 1960...

I still love Best Years of Our Lives the most.

Casablanca - still amazing for so many reasons I can not begin to list. It is the American film I think despite its flaws.

'38 Robinhood

On the Waterfront.

Man who knew too much.

Man in the grey flannel suit.

Any Tracy - Hepburn movie

Gahhh too many to list. And yes Citizen Kane blah blah blah, but I could never gt into it.

Well we can dissagree on that and still be friends.

Have you seen Best Years of our Lives?

You realize that the sailor who lost his hands and was the all american foot ball hero, really did loose his hands on a destroyer, really was the all american football hero and was talking quite literally about the issues f how to face a girl who still loved him?

I'm not saying it wasn't the better movie. I'm say that had "It's a Wonderful Life" not bowed in a year where it faced such a tough competitor it would have likely won. That's all I'm saying.

High Noon and The Searchers are excellent choices. If I remember correctly, High Noon occurs in real time. A character says something will happen in fifteen minutes, it actually takes 15 minutes.

The Searchers is just awesome. There's no other way to describe it.

And somehow I keep missing Shane. I never remember to rent it and I'm always busy when it is on. :(

Beck is such a despicable liar that he used clips of protests backed by Soros to claim he is "evil" but fails to note they were ANTI-COMMUNIST protests.

As examples, Beck cited Soros' purported roles in the Rose Revolution (Georgia), the Orange Revolution (Ukraine) and the Velvet Revolution (Czechoslovakia), as well as "coups" in Croatia and Yugoslavia. Author Richard Poe then connected Soros' previous work to Beck's accusation that Soros' "target" is the United States.

Unmentioned in Beck's program, but revealed in Shadow Party, the book Poe co-wrote and which appears to be the source material for a lot of the information being presented by Beck about Soros, is the fact that many of the governments Soros supposedly helped bring down were autocratic ones, often headed by former Communist leaders.

(Media Matters - Nov 9)

Soros is one of the great capitalists. I am in finance and attempted to read his book on reflexivity but got no further than I did in Stephen Hawking's book.

What I love about Unforgiven which you really don't see in any other western, is a sense of grit. I mean you get the sense that these were people who lived in dirt, struggled through their day to day, faced real violence and had a certain desensitization to it, and smelled bad ( all of which strikes me as accurate to the actual time and place). There is nothing shiny about the film.

Talk about poor planning. Now you have to wonder what will happen with the building. I've seen cases like this where it ends up being abandoned for decades. They'll never get fair market value for the place and I doubt anyone would want to buy it. I'm a big proponent of simple remodels and metal buildings. Attempted takeover by Electronic Arts

In mid-February 2008, Electronic Arts (EA) proposed an acquisition of Take-Two Interactive for about $2 billion. According to Game Informer's April issue, EA CEO John Riccitiello said that EA considered a deal for Take-Two last spring but axed it at the last minute. Take-Two's board of directors declined the cash deal. But EA was still pursuing the acquisition of Take-Two, stating in a letter, "If you are unwilling to proceed on that basis, however, we may pursue other means, including the public disclosure of this letter, to bring our offer and the compelling value it represents to the attentions of Take-Two's shareholders." Later, Take-Two released a statement explaining why the company has rejected the offer, "In addition to undervaluing key elements of our business, EA's proposal fails to recognize the value we are building through our ongoing turnaround efforts, which will further revitalize Take-Two." Take-Two offered to discuss the offer after Grand Theft Auto IV's release on April 29, 2008. If EA does acquire Take-Two, it will end the company's main competition in the sports genre of video games.[18] The bid expired May 15, 2008, however EA extended the offer until June 16, 2008, at the same price of $25.74 per share. Take-Two's position has not changed. On September 14, 2008, EA announced that they decided to let the $2 billion offer to buy Take-Two expire.

I breathed a sigh of relief when their bid failed. All I could think about was Sierra acquiring Origin, completely gutting it, and in effect destroying the "Wing Commander" franchise.

Also, keep in mind that 2K is a subsidiary of Take-Two, which would also likely have put one of my all time favorite franchises in EA's hands. "Civilization".

Studied it in film class. Frame by frame. I'll never forget it. We also did The Graduate & Rear Window. Seriously, frame by frame. Fantastic class.

Yeah this started as a pre 60's discussion... It is hard not to love the Graduate (Anne Bankroft made that movie, though Hoffman was at his best too) or most of the films of Newman and Redford for that matter.

And I am surprised when talking bad - as in really bad films no one mentioned The Core or Mission to Mars.

Yeah the sentence I lost was "example of government planning, held by some to be inherently superior to corporate management"

The point is not a right leaner swipe at government but the idea that with either management style you must insert the sharp human brain to prevent costly error. There is no inherent advantage either way. Nor for Dem vs GOP. It's all about the sum of the individual efforts.

Post wing requires more skills.

Looks like they went off on a tangent. More to the point she seemed to be trying to justify herself to what seemed like Stewart's criticisms or different points of view.

Yeah, I only caught part of it but she seemed to think Stewart was unfair to the left. I think she's just taking things too seriously. Stewart is a comedian and he makes jokes and I think his audience is smart enough to know that a Code Pink nut and an elected Republican politician are not the same thing.
Sanchez fipped out about the same thing by thinking that Stewart was unfairly targeting him. Lefties need to lighten up.

I really like Episode III too! Yoda riding on a Wookie = best scene. This may be too much TMI for how my sister and I experience love/relationships/need for therapy, but I always found one of the biggest problems with the whole Anakin/Padame story line to be the lack of any chemistry whatsoever. The problem being that he was supposed to trade all of his soul (well, you know what I mean) because of how much he loved her. Anyway, my sister and I saw the movie separately, called each other and both said "omg, I finally believed he loved her when he strangled her! I get it now!" Psychoanalyze away.

Because we're 'ere son, because we're 'ere...

Interestingly, one of the noteworthy things about the Zulu force attacking Rorke's Drift was its age: The attacking Zulus were all older, married men, almost all over 35 years old. They had been held back as a reserve and by the time they were sent forth the battle at Isandwana had ended. They didn't fight like old men though, and the Uthulwana ibutho proved its self as aggressive as the younger units. Partially this was because of the high number of Zulu nobles its ranks, including two of the king's half-brothers. The Uthulwana felt that it had to live up to its heritage and was extremely aggressive as a consequence. That aggression meant that a majority of its members ultimately died in battle.

Well, about 14 years later it all came full circle when I spent a summer watching Vietnam war movies (Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, and The Deer Hunter). I came home from work one day and all I could hear was tortured sobbing. I just knew she had come across the VHS that I had watched the night before (and sobbed during the last hour and a half).

Also very cool to see a young Christopher Walken because this was during his all cameo time (Kangaroo Jack anyone?), nice to see the legend.

Jedi, a group of psychics, trained to trust their instincts, who when told by every fiber of their being not to train the child, say fuck it and do it anyway, then go to war surrounded by tens of thousands of men who have all been given orders to kill them at a drop of a hat and the Jedis never noticed it.

Actually forget that.

The Jedi, wise and in council, who know that fear, loss and abandonment will lead to the dark side, leave the kids mom as a slave on a dangerous planet and do nothing when he starts having bad dreams about her.

Yeah sorry sand people raped and murdered your mom Annie - get over it?

How hard would it have been to get her out of there, set her up in a nice little job on Coruscant - even as like a Jedi secretary or something? Had they done that, no problems at all, period.

Or while we are at it, The Jedi, well aware there is a frakking Sith or two on the loose decide that the thing to do is just ignore it for ten years or so.

Abe Foxman Sent Glenn Beck A Letter Apologizing For Calling Him An Anti-Semite.

On October 22, the ADL bigwig sent Beck a personal letter in which he apologized for mistakenly lumping the Fox News host in with a list of anti-Semitic celebrities.

Here’s what the note, which is printed on official ADL letterhead, says:

Dear Glenn:

A direct-mail piece recently sent to some ADL supporters around the country inadvertently misidentified you on a list of celebrities who had made anti-Semitic statements over the past year.

This was clearly a mistake, and we deeply regret that your name was included in the mailing, which was produced by an independent, third-party contractor. I hope you will accept my personal apologies.

Even though we may disagree from time to time, I know that you are a friend of the Jewish people, and a friend of Israel.

Sincerely,
Abe
Abraham Foxman
National Director

Justin Elliott of Salon caught up with Foxman today to ask him about the Beck/Soros controversy, as well as the October 22 letter. In response, Foxman said he still believes Beck “is a strong supporter of Israel and the Jewish people”—though “there are certain things he doesn’t understand, which have led him to make insensitive remarks.”

AGAIN, you are NOT reading the post. The Foxman quote I have handed to you (twice) is recent, and AFTER Beck's latest show on Soros.

re: #575 Buck

AGAIN, you are NOT reading the post. The Foxman quote I have handed to you (twice) is recent, and AFTER Beck's latest show on Soros.

What you are quoting is somebody getting a statement from Eliott with Foxman saying that Beck doesn't understand things, which have led him to make antisemitic remarks. He also says he thinks that Beck is a supporter of Israel and the Jewish people-- he's wrong about that, as he was wrong about the mosque. But he's dead right that Beck 'doesn't understand some things'.

Now that Beck is going after the ADL, I'll bet you'll find Foxman rolling back from that position as well.

Now, about Beck 'not understanding some things', as Foxman says-- you previously talked about how good Beck's program is, how well-researched and well-footnoted. Given that Foxman has criticized it and talked about Beck's ignorance, do you want to change that position at all or are you going to keep standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Beck?

I am not calling myself a victim, I am stating the fact that you are a name caller. I suspect it is part of your debate DNA. It very often replaces actual argument.

There are very, very, very few people on LGF I call names, Buck. You're one of them. You're one of them because of your defense of people like Beck, your behavior during the Shirley Sherrod case, and all the other times you've shown yourself to be a nasty piece of work.

Consider that, Buck. I really don't usually call anyone names. You're special.

Feel special.

Actually Foxman did NOT use the term antisemetic. That is your addition.

Although I agree with Foxman and don't think Beck should have mentioned Soros' holocaust past, I cannot find where the description of what he did was not well footnoted.

I would have left that alone, and I consider it off topic, but what Soros has himself talked about is a fact.

I think there are enough evil deeds in Soros more recent past, that his life at 13 years old can be dropped.

Although I agree with Foxman and don't think Beck should have mentioned Soros' holocaust past, I cannot find where the description of what he did was not well footnoted.

Really? You can't? I want you to say that again. You can't find anything that Beck said that isn't well-documented? You think it's all true? His description is accurate?

I would have left that alone, and I consider it off topic, but what Soros has himself talked about is a fact.

And what is that, Buck? What has Soros talked about?

I think there are enough evil deeds in Soros more recent past, that his life at 13 years old can be dropped.

That's so fucking generous of you, to 'drop' the subject of a thirteen year old Jewish boy attempting to survive the holocaust. What an amazingly generous person you are, to 'drop' the subject.

What an amazingly arrogant thing to say. What an incredibly unfeeling thing to say.

I wasn't even referring to the personal attacks on me.

Then to what were you referring, Buck?

By the way, speaking of Beck's 'documentation' and foonotes, what do you think of him relying on so many antisemitic writers and documents?

Have you read those threads? Perhaps you'd like to go participate in them and talk about how well Beck footnoted his program.

Great, so you are saying that in this case 'insensitive' and 'antisemite' is the same thing. Maybe for you that is true. I don't think that is supportable. The fact is that the criticism of Beck this week was on very narrow grounds.

Salon reporter Justin Elliott reported yesterday that the

Anti-Defamation League's Abe Foxman said in a statement sent to Salon today that he still believes Fox host Glenn Beck "is a strong supporter of Israel and the Jewish people,"

BTW the link to that was in my first post as well. It wasn't just someone quoting someone that way you have mis-characterized it.

What has Soros talked about?

I guess you have to watch the full unedited episode. I suspect you haven't. That you would ask that question leads me to believe that you don't know the first thing about what Beck has documented with regards to Soros.

Soros has been attacking FOX NEWS and BECK for many years. Soros has spent untold millions trying to destroy Beck, and force him off the air.

Now that Beck is firing back, Soros has aimed his well paid attack dogs and is 'waving the victim flag high'.

It was on the grounds he had said a lot of ridiculously antisemitic bullshit about Soros.

Foxman is being generous-- or, probably, ass-covering-- and saying it was out of ignorance.

Yeah, I mentioned that last post, dude. So what?

I guess you have to watch the full unedited episode. I suspect you haven't.

I have. As I told you before.

You're not seriously going to refuse to back up what Beck's claims about the 13 year old Soros that you found so well-documented, are you?

Now that Beck is firing back, Soros has aimed his well paid attack dogs and is 'waving the victim flag high'.

Who are these well-paid attack dogs, please? And by 'firing back', you mean, 'Saying a lot of reprehensible shit about what Soros did to survive as 13 year old during the holocaust, and then perpetrating all the usual rumors about a rich Jewish oligarch secretly controlling the world economy'?

Hey, you must have missed this bit:

By the way, speaking of Beck's 'documentation' and foonotes, what do you think of him relying on so many antisemitic writers and documents?

I'd love to hear what you think of Beck using the racist authors on the House Un-American activities committee. Care to share your thoughts on that?

I didn't miss anything, I also didn't take your bait. The game of connect the dots only works one way for you.

For example, misquoting Foxman and saying that he called Beck and antisemite. When shown that the opposite is true suddenly Foxman is wrong or ass covering.

You want to make the case that Beck is an antisemite? Enjoy your digital lynching. I wont participate or support it.

I, like ADL Foxman feel that Beck should not have made the comments he did about Soros' 1930-40's past. However his being a holocaust survivor does not insulate him from the things he is doing now. An attack on a jew is not the same thing as antisemitism.

You want to call Beck an antisemite? Find something he has said that is actually antisemtic.

That's hilarious coming from a Beck supporter.

I didn't quote him.

But you called what Beck had said well-footnoted:

I cannot find where the description of what he did was not well footnoted.

So please, tell me what you think that Soros did in those years that was well-footnoted by Beck.

Or be a coward and just claim that Beck footnoted it well but say that you don't want to talk about it.

You want to call Beck an antisemite? Find something he has said that is actually antisemtic.

Why is that the only way of being an antisemite? Isn't using antisemitic authors as your sources, over and over again, isn't that antisemitic?

Why not?

And why aren't you going to participate in those other threads, Buck? They're about this subject-- why do you resort to dropping your comments into a dead thread?

Have some self-respect and some courage.
