That open tuning is wild. A lot of close intervals.

3 albusteve  Sun, Nov 14, 2010 5:54:55pm

if I recall, the great old bluesman, Charlie Patton was invited to his very first recording session...maybe in San Antonio, I forget, but a hotel somewhere... the boys switched on the old acetate recorder and told him to play whatever he wanted and Charlie promptly stood away from the bed, faced the corner of the walls and started playing the blues....notice where Don here is standing, with his back to an empty corner...players like that for reasons of acoustics, not because they are shy...Don hears something that he likes, right there in that particular spot

I am in awe of those who can play an instrument well.
Don Ross is CRAZY at picking the strings!
(And he knows it!)

Episode 3 of 'The Walking Dead' is on AMC tonight. A very well done adaptation of the graphic novel.

Ludwig, do you know if one chain of hardware stores is better than the other's for disposing of compact florescent bulbs? My dad has two that finally conked out and he's not sure where to take them.

If they sell them, they have to take them. I drop mine at the Walgreens drug store 2 blocks away.

If you can play a D7 chord for an hour straight, and maybe wiggle it one fret up or one fret down every once in a while, then you may have what it takes to be in the James Brown band. (Zombie stuff notwithstanding)

Pearl Jam were stuck into the grunge category because they're from Seattle. They never fit that genre, IMO. They were always more of a straightforward rock band to me.

I really dug some of their later stuff, like Yield and Binaural more than the early albums, but it's all good. They're severely underrated, especially in terms of influence. In fact, I'd go so far as to wager that Pearl Jam have influenced more bands that came after them than Nirvana ever has.

Pearl Jam is listenable, at least most of the time....over the past decades, the music has split off and split off again, charting new sounds, hybriding older stuff, finding new ways to play the same strings and the same chords...like movies, when comparing bands, it all depends on the genre, even within a band....the Stones have recorded some of the sweetest ballads for example....really soft easy stuff, but the value of them is the style...make a ballad and still be the Stones...nobody has ever come as close to crossing so many barriers and doing it well with their signature riffs and sounds...nobody

Welcome to music. That's how it's always been. You can go back through the classical masters and find the influences of the earlier composers on some of the later ones. Same goes for jazz, blues, world music, or anything else.

Saturday. I went to Comic-Con yesterday. Got to see Billy Dee Williams give a Q&A session, which was neat. Funniest moment came when a dad dared his 8-year old son to ask if Colt .45 really worked to get the ladies. It was hilarious.

Saw a few other folks in person, but I didn't pay for autographs or photos or anything. Still, it was a fun day. I even walked out with some Firefly/Serenity swag, which ruled. :D

Some people, unfortunately seemed to think it was 'soft on radical Islam and terrorism' because it didn't flash the phrase 'evil destroyers of civilisation' up on the screen every few seconds or something like that. (Yeah that's my comment at the bottom, btw.)

I was never "into" grunge as such. I was from western Wisconsin and the Minneapolis scene (The Replacements, Husker Du, Urban Guerrillas, Soul Asylum, etc.) was the best to me.

That's the real shock, since the Giants have a defense as good as that of the Bears and the Bears collapsed the Cowboy offensive line with ease. Getting rid of their head coach may prove the tonic the Cowboys needed. They still won't make the playoffs, but it may give them a better season.

Agree with all of that. I also liked that it showed how acting on a bigoted/uninformed view which regards all religious muslims as terrorists is not only unjust but also plays into the hands of terrorists. I suspect that is what really irked the wingnuts who disliked the movie.

I'm travelling with Cass, and we're planning to kill the shit out of every Legion slaver / rapist / self-absorbed asshole that has the misfortune to find him- or herself in our vicinity. We've got plenty of ammo and just enough whisky. We're going to settle in at the 188 Trading Post for the night. That girl "Veronica" can't seem to keep her eyeballs off Cass. I don't know whether to feel threatened or intrigued.

Anyway, as for YOU, I heard the Kings were looking for an errand boy. Run along now, shoo.

Agree with all of that. I also liked that it showed how acting on a bigoted/uninformed view which regards all religious muslims as terrorists is not only unjust but also plays into the hands of terrorists. I suspect that is what really irked the wingnuts who disliked the movie.

I think its also that its a foreign movie that aims to teach a lesson. Many Americans don't want to hear lessons from foreigners just on general principals.

Anyone, one of the people who believed this story told us that some female relative of his lived in Laredo, and she was barricaded inside her house, fearing for her life.

I saw the movie a long time ago... recently I worked on a production of the stage play when I was employed at the theatre... ran the tech for the show. If you like that kind of show, you might want to catch a live performance of "Accomplice" by Rupert Holmes (yes, the Pina Colada song guy), which spoofs the "how many combinations of possible killers can we get out of a cast of four." re: #258 Walter L. Newton

I saw the movie a long time ago... recently I worked on a production of the stage play when I was employed at the theatre... ran the tech for the show. If you like that kind of show, you might want to catch a live performance of "Accomplice" by Rupert Holmes (yes, the Pina Colada song guy), which spoofs the "how many combinations of possible killers can we get out of a cast of four." Very clever and very funny.

Thanks Walter, I enjoyed Sleuth very much.
I thought the script was good, and acting superb.

I will see what I can find on 'Accomplice' in Oz.

Good... it would probably never be made into a movie, because it requires a live audience, as even the audience becomes suspect in the murders... and it requires the ability to interact with the audience.

No, it was higher up, in his esophagus, so I think they went down and pulled it out. He had been getting sick and couldn't get better, so they x-rayed.

Westboro protesters face jeers and slashed tires
[Link: www.tulsaworld.com...]

Shortly after finishing their protest at the funeral of Army Sgt. Jason James McCluskey of McAlester, a half-dozen protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., headed to their minivan, only to discover that its front and rear passenger-side tires had been slashed.

To make matters worse, as their minivan slowly hobbled away on two flat tires, with a McAlester police car following behind, the protesters were unable to find anyone in town who would repair their vehicle, according to police.

The minivan finally pulled over several blocks away in a shopping center parking lot, where AAA was called. A flatbed service truck arrived and loaded up the minivan. Assistant Police Chief Darrell Miller said the minivan was taken to Walmart for repairs.

Well played McAlester, well played.

326 Lord Baron Viscount Duke Earl Count Planckton  Mon, Nov 15, 2010 6:41:49am

I was reading Oleg Budnitsky's brilliant article "The Intelligentsia Meets the Enemy: Educated Soviet Officers in Defeated Germany, 1945" (Kritika, 2009, vol. 10, no. 3) and came upon this bit:

“Jewish revanche” in Germany occurred unexpectedly, although participants in the action themselves were the last ones to think of it in precisely these terms. Elena Kogan was part of the group that was tasked with finding Hitler, or what remained of him. After the discovery of the remains, for a time she kept Hitler’s teeth, which were placed in a box that had held perfume or cheap jewelry (there was no safe on hand). Not for a moment could she take her eyes off the box, which contained the only incontrovertible proof of the identity of the burned body discovered in the courtyard of the Reichskanzlerei, and of Hitler. Kogan was annoyed that she had to drag around the box with Hitler’s teeth under her arm the whole time; it was inconvenient.

The pathology examination of Hitler’s body was carried out under the supervision of the chief forensic expert of the First Belorussian Front, Lieutenant-Colonel Faust Iosifovich Shkaravskii. Even in his worst nightmare the Führer, who expended so much energy on the extermination of the Jews, could not have foreseen that his burned corpse would be opened up by a Jew with the symbolic name of Faust, and that a Jewish woman would drag his teeth around under her arm and, moreover, would be annoyed that they interfered with her celebrating the capitulation of the Third Reich.

It makes sense to me. Democrats are taking the stance that the election had to do economic issues outside their control, not with people disapproving of their governing. If they get rid of Pelosi, it pokes a hole in that idea from the get go. I think keeping her as leader is the right move, as far as their strategy is concerned.

Gus, for the love of god, things aren't black and white.

I think Pelosi should be replaced. I think that the weakness of Wall Street Reform is a very good example of why she should be replaced; legislation got through, but what was the quality of that legislation?

But in so far as the Democrats are a corporatist party that like legislation like that, Pelosi was successful.

In terms of what would be good for the American people, it'd be better not to have Pelosi.

But was that the fault of Pelosi, or the "where good legislation goes to die" Senate? From my vantage point, the House did the absolute best they could in the face of unified obstructionism from the GOP and their enablers in the Blue Dog caucus (who, by the way, got decimated the most in the midterm shellacking). The Dem base is fond of saying "when given the choice between Republican-lite and a real Republican, the real Republican wins every time" - in other words, Dems need to offer a compelling alternative instead of constantly going along with the rightward-moving Overton Window and simply trying to be a non-crazy version of the GOP.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Charlie Rangel's ethics trial opens up in the House today and if anyone thinks that it wont end with a slap on the wrist hasn't been paying attention.

Democrats need the live body and have weighed the pros-cons and found it to their advantage to keep him. Even GOPers know the utility of keeping Rangel around as a punching bag. They can raise funds against Democrats using Rangel's ethics lapses as a focus on Democrats' malfeasance.

So, it's in both parties' interests to keep him around even though had any one of us engaged in similar behavior, we'd have already been hauled before courts on tax evasion charges in multiple jurisdictions (NY, DC, and federal court on IRS tax evasion over a period of more than a decade) and then before courts in NY on corruption.

Instead, expect nothing more than a letter of censure or a reprimand. After all, Rangel's own constituents reelected him by a convincing landslide majority.

That's why this is a farce. And the joke is on us - and showcases the worst in the political system that cannot police itself effectively.

Pelosi is a corporatist Democrat. She's fine with compromised legislation that benefits corporations above individuals.

From my vantage point, the House did the absolute best they could in the face of unified obstructionism from the GOP and their enablers in the Blue Dog caucus (who, by the way, got decimated the most in the midterm shellacking).

I agree with the last part, but not in the least with the first. The Democrats, including those in the House, completely balled-up the selling of health care reform. Yes, there was extreme FUD put out against it, but the case was not made at all well enough. They let it get away from them. And, because they did, they compromised the HCR bill down to a very weakened version of what we actually need.

I agree with that entirely. What I'm saying is that in many ways, Pelosi is a Republican-lite. Not on social issues, but on economic ones, the majority of the Democrats are corporatist and not willing to engage with the big solutions, the large changes that would actually make a difference.

Geraldo should go lock himself in a frakkin' Capone vault. Then again, even if he did, there'd be nothing found in there because he's full of hot air (and himself).

The troofers long have focused on the collapse of 7WTC as being unexplainable because it collapsed hours after the Twin Towers collapsed, and ignore that there were multiple fires that were not being fought because of the precarious situation of debris from the Twin Towers still looming over the area - recall that hundreds of firefighters were killed in the tower collapses, and dozens of their vehicles were devastated as well. 7WTC had diesel generators and fuel tanks that fed those fires, and the building was heavily damaged from the collapsing North Tower (the same tower caused irreparable damage to Fiterman Hall - which is now in the process of being rebuilt across the street from the already rebuilt 7WTC).

The troofers focus on a couple of radio transmissions about firefighters pulling out of the towers - claiming that this was the call to pull the tower down - not to get firefighters out of harms' way because of the imminent collapse.

The entire scene after the collapsed twin towers was straight out of Dante's Inferno with fires and debris everywhere. And the precipitating event for the collapses were the planes striking both towers.

Moreover, the NIST report specifically dealt with the 7WTC collapse and noted that the collapses were due to structural damage to key structural members and prolonged exposure to fire that weakened the structures to the point of failure.

Live-Blogging the Rangel Hearing: Rangel Walks Out

The public ethics trial of Representative Charles B. Rangel, Democrat of New York, on 13 charges of unethical behavior took a stunning turn Monday morning when Mr. Rangel walked out of the hearing 40 minutes after it began, complaining that it would be unfair to continue the process because he could no longer afford a lawyer.

And so, the hearing began without him.

The hearing, which comes after a two-year investigation of Mr. Rangel’s personal finances and fund-raising, began with the committee chairwoman and ranking Republican making somber opening statements.

But when Mr. Rangel was given the opportunity to make opening remarks, he complained that his lawyers withdrew from the case when he was unable to pay the $2 million bill he had run up or assure them that he could cover the additional $1 million it would cost to represent him at a hearing.

The House already passed its legislation so it needs the Senate to pass in order for the President (who's already signaled his willingness to sign). Now's the time for Schumer and Gillinbrand and Menendez and Lautenberg to show that they know what they're doing and get the bill passed. Enough with the political tricks and get this legislation passed to deal with the continuing health problems for 9/11 responders.

So you don't have any actual answer to what you want them to do. I figured as much.

The problem with McConnell blocking the legislation is not the Democrats. It's McConnell. The Democrats can't magically 'do a deal'. For some reason, you're blaming Democrats for the GOP not voting for the bill-- and further, casting them as whiners to boot. That's dumb as hell.

The Zadroga bill needs two Republican senators to sign on in order to pass. Insiders believe one is ready to join, but if McConnell said yes, many more likely would follow.

From the article:

The Zadroga bill needs two Republican senators to sign on in order to pass. Insiders believe one is ready to join, but if McConnell said yes, many more likely would follow.

"His vote is a lot more important than just his one vote - it's a lot more what he does as party leader," said one person involved in negotiations. "If he makes this a free vote, 10 or 15 Republicans will probably vote for it."

It needs two GOP senators. That's all. The Democrats are supporting it wholeheartedly. And yet somehow, the non-passage of the bill is the Democrat's fault.

Insane.

Speaking of money for lawyers, do you think this will become another serious problem for Rangel?

Congressman Charles Rangel, whose ethics trial starts tomorrow, appears to have improperly used political-action committee money to pay for his defense.

Rangel tapped his National Leadership PAC for $293,000 to pay his main legal-defense team this year. He took another $100,000 from the PAC in 2009 to pay lawyer Lanny Davis.

Two legal experts told The Post such spending is against House rules.

"It's a breach of congressional ethics," one campaign-finance lawyer said.

Washington, DC, political lawyer Cleta Mitchell said there is "no authority for a member to use leadership PAC funds as a slush fund to pay for personal or official expenses."
Leadership PACs are typically used by politicians to donate money to other candidates.

But Rangel seems to have run afoul of House ethics rules. Lawmakers are generally allowed to use campaign cash to pay their lawyers, but this is limited to money in their personal campaign committee and they must ask permission first, the campaign-finance lawyer said.

"The only campaign funds that a member may use to pay for congressional expenses are funds of his or her principal campaign committee -- not the funds of a leadership PAC or a multicandidate committee," according to the House Ethics Manual.

Legal fees tied to a campaign, election or performance of official duties are considered congressional expenses.

"Accepting money or payment for legal expenses from any other source, including a PAC, would be a gift and is barred by the House rules," the lawyer said.

The Ethics Committee had no comment. Rangel's office refused to comment on the PAC money.

What can they do? They could have made a deal at any point on getting the legislation passed - by itself or as attached to any other piece of legislation. It's politics and the kind of deal that could have been done is as varied and infinite in possibility as anything else. McConnell is a roadblock to be sure, but a deal could be made.

Schumer isn't some neophyte. He's been around and knows how the politics gets done and how to make deals, and yet he hasn't come up with anything.

And yes, I can blame the Democrats if there is simply the need to get 1 vote. Where is Schumer and Reid and the rest of the Democrats to lean on the likes of McCain, Snowe, or any of the former Gang of 14 who are open to making some kind of deal?

As you say, they need only 2 GOPers to cross the aisle, and yet the Democrat leadership can't seem to find the one more to pressure by hook or crook. That's bad politics on the Democrats' side. Do they not have anything to trade off on this?

By the same token, there's plenty of blame for the GOP to be playing politics with this in the first place. McConnell could let this be a free vote, and if the Democrats give up something in return, they'd probably get this. It's how politics gets done as dirty as the whole thing is.

You want to blame McConnell - I blame both McConnell and obstructionist GOPers who play politics with this and ineffectual Democrats who are busy playing politics themselves and ignore the plight of these workers.

There are still several fake blogs created by him from my name, easily found by googling. The thing is, Carmelo is (was) well-known on the Usenet as a vicious troll "Carmlo" (search at groups.google.com ). He was tormenting groups like alt.wicca and alt.pagan.

Here's a person describing him:

[Link: groups.google.com...]

The worst troll I've ever run up against was Carmelo Lisciotto,
known by many addresses, among them car...@hotmail.com. He lurked around
alt.pagan and alt.religion.wicca for about two years (and may still be
there, for all I know, since I unsubscribed those long ago). His gig
was posting inflammatory messages about burning the witches in the name
of God and wotnot, and he posted at least 200 times daily at his peak.
We actually thought he was legit until we saw him trolling alt.christnet
with "Hail Satan" posts, at which point he became more of a nuisance
than anything else. Killfiles were pretty effective against Carmelo,
provided you kept current with the various addresses he used, which he
changed about twice a month on average. "Minister Carm" apparently
found some kind of server that was religious-affiliated (and hence
wouldn't yank his account when we sent complaints to their abuse
address) at one point or another, which prompted the development of
about three moderated newsgroups, eventually.

I don't know why he decided to touch the topic of the Holocaust with his filthy hands, but that's the result.

Your partisanship is utterly clear. The GOP, en block, refuses to support a piece of legislation-- and your reaction is to blame the Democrats for not 'making a deal'.

Actually, you just blamed the Democrats. You say you blame the obstructionist GOPers, but your original post was only about how the Democrats suck because they can't make the deal. And you're still saying that. It's a nonsense argument.

Why won't the GOPers make a deal?

Yeah, why are they opposed to this legislation?

re: #408 Obdicut

That's all you have? Complaining that I can't come up with a deal and because I'm reading the politics of the situation as showing just how ineffectual the Democrats and Schumer and the NY delegation are in all this?

This should never have been politicized in the first place, but you'd like to ignore the fact that the Democrats did play games with the politics of the Act - relating to DADT.

There is, however, a major catch. Republicans are mounting a filibuster of the bill because Reid has also added an amendment to end the military's "don't ask, don't tell policy," and another to grant kids of illegal immigrants a chance at citizenship if they are in the armed services or college.

Gillibrand won't be able to offer the 9/11 amendment unless the GOP relents on the filibuster.

"It's going to be tough to break the filibuster," admitted one Democratic aide. "But definitely, if we can get it done, we'd have a majority for the 9/11 bill."

It takes a three-fifths vote - 60 senators - to end a filibuster.

So, you want to ignore that part - that Reid wanted to include DADT in the measure, when a clean version would get passage?

Okay, we know where your loyalties are then.

Had Reid offered up a clean version without the bolded parts - this would have already passed. But since it hasn't, we've got you complaining about McConnell and the GOP when the politics is a wee bit more nuanced than you're willing to concede.

re: #410 Varek Raith

It ends a tax break.

Under current law, certain payments (principally dividends, interest, and royalties) made by US-based entities to a parent company based overseas are subject to a 30 percent withholding tax. That requirement customarily is reduced or eliminated when the payment is made to a country with which the US has a tax treaty. Companies with parents based in tax haven countries are able to effectively bypass the withholding tax by routing payments through an affiliate in a tax treaty country, which then transfers the funds to the parent company. The provision would limit this practice by retaining the withholding tax on certain deductible payments (principally interest and royalties) to a foreign-based affiliate unless the tax would be reduced under a treaty if the payment were made directly to the company’s parent corporation.

Simple.

As a GOP congressman said on the floor of the house -

"the rescue workers ran into the twin towers to save people - not to raise taxes".

Ho ho. So the reason the GOP is blocking the bill is homophobia? "We'd love to help the 9/11 workers but we can't because then we'd be abandoning our position of denying rights to gay people"?

That suddenly puts their obstructionism in a whole new light!

Which is contrary to what President Obama wanted. Obama didn't want legislation from congress repealing DADT. He first wanted a report from the Pentagon regarding its repeal which is still pending. Harry Reid's inclusion of this bill into the bloated Zadroga bill was pure political maneuvering.

DADT does not belong in the Zadroga bill. Sorry but Reid attaching that was pure political BS.

re: #411 lawhawk

First of all, I'm not sure why pointing out that the GOP is also opposed to ending the DADT is supposed to show the Democrats in a bad light. You didn't really think that one through.

Second of all, you're conflating two things; The Democrats attempted to attach this 9/11 bill as an amendment onto a military funding bill because the GOP was blocking the 9/11 bill. The amendment in reference to DADT was also on the military funding bill, not the 9/11 bill.

So you are grossly mistaken when you say:

So, you want to ignore that part - that Reid wanted to include DADT in the measure, when a clean version would get passage?

A 'clean' version of the 9/11 bill is exactly what is being blocked in the Senate.

Do you understand this? The DADT amendment was not to the 9/11 bill, but to the military spending bill. So your contention is mistaken, I assume out of ignorance.

Can you please admit this error?

Here is the bill so that you can see there is no DADT amendment attatched.

It wasn't included in the Zadroga bill.

It was included in the military spending bill.

To which the Democrats also attempted to attach an amendment that was identical to the Zadroga bill.

Again, here is the Zadroga bill.

re: #417 Gus 802

Exactly. Reid thought that by including other legislation in the popular Zadroga bill, he could get his own laundry list of priorities passed. Or score political points in the process by highlighting the GOP obstructionism. They got the GOP obstructionism down, but the folks who would be helped by the Zadroga Act are getting screwed by the politicians who do what they always do - act in their own self interest.

re: #423 Obdicut

That's alright. We all make mistakes and depending on the version, you would have been right. The Zadroga bill, had it been a completely clean bill, would have gotten widespread support, but that's precisely why it became larded up with other items and then later attached to the Defense bill.

I agree that DADT sucks. And again it doesn't belong on the Zadroga bill. If the DADT amendment wasn't attached McConnell would probably support it. However, regardless of how I feel about DADT there will be those that oppose it and they have a right to make an up or down vote on that matter.

Pam think Jews have a slave mentality and are unable to act in their own interest.....
UK: Israeli Embassy Takes Up Against Staunch Defenders of ...... Israel

A new "group" was recently formed by the British Board of Jewish Deputies, Holocaust Information Campaign, CST and the Israeli Embassy, among others, "to combat Jewish support for the English Defence League within the community."

Jewish Kameradschaftspolizei leadership in the UK have declared war on the pro-Israel, counter jihad group, the English Defense League. This just after the massive EDL demonstration in support of Israel. I have wrestled with the Jewicides at the CST, et al, so it is not surprising to see the usual humilated suspects prostrating themselves to Islamic supremacists, but what turned my head is "Israeli Embassy." Could this be true? Does the Israeli government know?
....
The only explanation I have for this illogical and seemingly self destructive behavior is that the Jews have not yet begun to internalize or intellectualize the very idea of working in their own self interest. They never had a "self interest." They were slaves for 400 years, and their base instinct is survival.

400 years that occurred more than 2,000 years ago. Jews have come a long way since then. Survival has long been the self-interest involved, particularly since the Holocaust, which highlighted just how extremists can rise to power and result in slaughter of unimaginable proportions.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Charges 17 People with Participating in $42.5 Million Fraud on Organization That Makes Reparations to Victims of Nazi Persecution

PREET BHARARA, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and JANICE K. FEDARCYK, the Assistant Director-In-Charge of the New York Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation ( "FBI" ), announced today the unsealing of criminal charges against 17 alleged members of a long-running scheme that defrauded programs established to aid survivors of Nazi persecution out of more than $42 million. Employees of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany ( the "Claims Conference" ), which administered the programs, were supposed to process and approve legitimate applications. Instead, they allegedly approved over 5,500 fraudulent applications, resulting in payouts to applicants who did not qualify for the programs. In exchange, these insiders kept a portion of the money for themselves and their coconspirators.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney PREET BHARARA said: "If ever there was a cause that you would hope and expect would be immune from base greed and criminal fraud, it would be the Claims Conference, which every day assists thousands of poor and elderly victims of Nazi persecution. Sadly, those victim funds were themselves victimized. Without the extraordinary cooperation of the Claims Conference in ferreting out this alleged scheme to defraud them, it never would have been exposed. We thank them for their assistance. With our partners at the FBI, we will bring to justice all those who would callously line their own pockets by looting a lifeline for Holocaust survivors."

FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge JANICE K. FEDARCYK said: "Each of the defendants played a role in creating, filing and processing fraudulent claims on behalf of non-qualifying applicants—and dividing up the spoils. Funds established and financed by the German government to aid Holocaust survivors were siphoned off by the greedy, and not paid out, as intended, to the worthy. This was a brazen miscarriage of the compensation programs."

I hope this group of scum spend the rest of their dreary days in prison.
