Two Apples - that ought to reverse aging!

The Apple-Apple conflict has been pretty serious for years - the original Macs were prohibited from including a MIDI port because of legal agreements not to impinge on Apple Records' music business. They must have spent billions on their law firms by now.

I am certain that the passing of Micheal Jackson made this possible.

Totally wondering about this. His estate now owns the catalog. Wonder how that plays out.

And when he bought the catalog it was probably his smartest move and the one that pissed me off.

Am I the only soul in the world that doesn't have every Beatles song burned and saved to a hard drive? Heck I even have the original out take of No reply..( My favorite Beatles song)

9 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You  Mon, Nov 15, 2010 6:23:34pm

I already have (pirated) digital copies of every album they ever made, plus a copy of every compilation released since they quit producing albums. (Same thing for the "Who" 29 albums (+ some singles) and counting, as they still keep releaseing more re-hashes...)

Anyway...I really don't care, I had most of this stuff on vinyl once upon a time before Florida flooding and multi-state moves destroyed them. I bought the right to own a copy of the songs so I don't feel the least bit guilty about downloading them sans payment now.

/not a pirate, just a fan who doesn't want to have to pay five times for the same song. :(

re: #35 bratwurst

I believe it was "Rock and Roll Pussy."

44 bratwurst  Mon, Nov 15, 2010 6:42:28pm

re: #38 albusteve

don't know

Todd's "Rock and Roll Pussy" from "A Wizard, A True Star", 1973:

Beat it, beat it, beat your guitar
Smash it, smash it, 'til it sees stars
Rip it, rip it, rip it to shreds
Throw down your axe and then jump into bed
Get up, get up, get up and see
Revolution revolution on the TV
Will you, will you, get your nails dirty?
Or are you only just a rock and roll pussy?

Rundgren was giving a lot of interviews at this time describing (accurately) Lennon's increasingly obnoxious public behavior and how it was tarnishing his image. Lennon replied in the pages of Melody Maker in 1974:

AN OPENED LETTUCE TO SODD RUNTLESTUNTLE. (from dr. winston o'boogie)

Couldn't resist adding a few "islands of truth" of my own, in answer to Turd
Runtgreen's howl of hate (pain.)

Dear Todd,

I like you, and some of your work, including "I Saw The Light", which is not
unlike "There's A Place" (Beatles), melody wise.

1) I have never claimed to be a revolutionary. But I am allowed to sing about
anything I want! Right?

2) I never hit a waitress in the Troubador, I did act like an ass, I was too
drunk. So shoot me!

3) I guess we're all looking for attention Rodd, do you really think I don't
know how to get it, without "revolution?" I could dye my hair green and pink
for a start!

4) I don't represent anyone but my SELF. It sounds like I represented
something to you, or you wouldn't be so violent towards me. (Your dad
perhaps?)

5) Yes Dodd, violence comes in mysterious ways it's wonders to perform,
including verbal. But you'd know that kind of mind game, wouldn't you? Of
course you would.

6) So the Nazz use to do "like heavy rock" then SUDDENLY a "light pretty
ballad". How original!

7) Which gets me to the Beatles, "who had no other style than being the
Beatles"!! That covers a lot of style man, including your own, TO DATE.....
Yes Godd, the one thing those Beatles did was to affect PEOPLES' MINDS. Maybe
you need another fix? Somebody played me your rock and roll pussy song, but I
never noticed anything. i think that the real reason you're mad at me is
cause I didn't know who you were at the Rainbow (L.A.) Remember that time you
came in with Wolfman Jack? When I found out later, I was cursing cause I
wanted to tell you how good you were. (I'd heard you on the radio.)

Anyway, However much you hurt me darling; I'll always love you,

J. L.

Usually I don't...err..."pirate" audio, the RIAA has been nasty until quite recently about that sort of thing. However, all that being said, I am still currently on the hunt for old comedy albums. I'm collecting and saving them digitally before they disappear, I grew up listening to stuff like "The buttondown mind of Bob Newhart" and I want to try to pass them on to the next generation.

I put a fairly popular torrent file out there on the public trackers a while ago that has 69 comedy albums in it as separate files. Not one of them was released after Jan. 1980. If you want the first three Smothers Brothers albums it is the only way to get them that I know of...

Living in LA gave me the chance to learn certain things about certain situations. Movies, music, entertainment... And it made me very conservative in this instance. Because of my musician/actor/writer/photographer friends.

When we consider the price we paid back when of old albums, singles, tapes, vinyl... It was all known to be impermanent media. It all wears out. So the natural expectation is we would buy the music more than once. Once for the home, once again for the car maybe. Or use the vinyl to make a tape. All impermanent.

Setting aside piracy, digital means forever. For $.99 a song. We can just migrate from machine to machine now. That has a big impact on revenues. And Artists keep getting screwed. The content creator (musician/writer etc) should do far better than the model we have now.

With apologies to friends and acquaintances that have movies and music unpaid. Sorry dude, it ain't right.
Pirated music is stolen music. Bootleg movies are stolen property. Pay up your $.99

Not easy to answer, but each media has an expected number of quality plays. So, I'd start there. Vinyl loses something each play. I never saw a lifetime warranty from a label. Now we have unlimited plays.

Custer's 7th Cav. gang just didn't have enough homeboys to win that fight, I heard they was outnumbered pretty drastic. Custer tried to split his homeys and send half of them around on a sneak and peek, only they got busted and gots pretty shredded tryin to back on out of that hostile hood. Meanwhiles Custer and his closest homeys trieds ta take on about 20 times their number of the Sitting Bull gang and got schooled away to infinity.

But if we use 'expected number of quality plays' as our baseline, am i wrong for having transferred many of my cd's to digital files on my pc, essentially converting them from limited play format to unlimited play format?

I have every CD of theirs, which were given to me by my Dad. And I've ripped each and every album to iTunes, so this piece of news does not matter so much to me. The sound quality is pretty decent, partially because those CDs are digitally remastered. But I'm glad that the Beatles are now on iTunes because others who don't care for CDs can download their songs.

Exactly. That's why music is so important to life.

My stepfather still has his moments with Elvis. It really made me understand the importance of music - the where you were when you heard it - and how that stays with you forever.

Segue into how tours matter so much for income for bands and how I've heard some rather over the hill performances lately.

I like the Itunes deal. Fair price, artists get paid, and they do not have even to be signed. Funny thing, when I put an indy band (Crossed Keys) I like on our I tunes I bought through Itunes, it gets frequent play on shuffle. Coincidence? Maybe. But they do protect the music. 2. I was old enough to understand that pirated music is often a virus carrier.

I don't think there's ever been a buffer-overflow exploit exposed in a PC music player, which would be required for a music file to have any chance of containing a virus. A file needs to be executable (an .exe file on a PC), or exploit a bug in the program opening the file to infect a system.

Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
If she's gone I can't go on
Feelin' two-foot small

Everywhere people stare
Each and every day
I can see them laugh at me
And I hear them say

Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away

How can I even try
I can never win
Hearing them, seeing them
In the state I'm in

How could she say to me
Love will find a way
Gather round all you clowns
Let me hear you say

Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away

Hello, You!

Yeah, the 80's were kinda weird. Lots of people were still nostalgic for the era of Rock n' Roll hysteria, I guess. Plus we had the added bonus of the Satanic Panic thrown in for good measure. Good times.

Basically, everything pop-culture in the 80s was going to lead you to kill yourself or others. Except Madonna, who was just going to encourage everyone to get pregnant.

True, and the Bears have to play Vick and the Eagles this month. The Bear's defense is back up to what it was in 2007, and the offense is finally coming together. Will Vick lead the Eagles to victory, or will he once again fall to the power of superb defenders such as Brian Urlacher and Tommie Harris? We'll know soon enough.

That's a tough story. Some will look on him with disgust forever. My wife is one of those people. Domestic animals are, for the most part, beings that simply are helpless in the face of whatever their owners choose to do, and my wife and I are pretty tightly bonded in the hatred of people who betray the animal/person relationship. She will always want me to change the channel when they are talking about Vick this and Vick that. Thing is, I can see where he came from, why he just didn't have a context for the horror of what he was doing, and why he deserves a chance to prove he's learned. Trust me, no downdings. I've been a Packers fan all my life and the 70's & 80's were not kind to us either.

A newspaper column in Chicago actually made that point about the Bears-Packers rivalry: For its its intensity, it's rare for both teams to be good at the same time. When the Bears were hot in the 1980's, the Packers had nothing. When the Packers got Farve and went on a roll, the Bears were a poor team. This season, both teams have ability and that will make their meeting in Lambeau Field on January 2nd a true showdown.

That will be a fun game.

We owe the Packers to George Halas. He made Green Bay's payroll more than once to keep the team as well as the league alive. Makes it all the better when both teams are playing well.

Not sure of that. I don't relish the injuries that would cause. Such a game would be exciting but if the winner lost the wrong people, they might well be out of real playoff contention thanks to the game that got them in.

Two things - the first one didn't hurt anyone IIRC though I'm sure the Dallas boy's probably weren't sure all their bits would thaw again :)
Second, that game is why there is a heater system under the turf at Lambeau field. Turn it up and everything turns to nice mud.

'Spacetime cloak' to make events invisible

Physicists have conceived of a 'spacetime' cloak which makes the passage of time invisible by manipulating light.

The cloak, which could conceal whole events from a viewer, promises to be of interest to jewellery robbers, magicians, exam cheats and practical jokers.

The theory is based on censoring the flow of events, which we perceive as a stream of light particles, also called photons, that strike the retina.

According to researchers from Imperial College London and Salford University in north-west England, the flow of photons can be slowed and events edited out and stitched back together by exploiting a characteristic of fibre optics.

Yup

No truth to the rumors that their neighbors want to push Israel into the sea, not to mention all those optical illusionary rockets being fired at them, and even if it were true, thats hardly an "obstacle to mid east peace"

Google CEO: Android update "could replace credit cards"

SAN FRANCISCO (CNNMoney.com) -- The next generation of Android is coming in a few weeks, and that update to the mobile operating system "could replace credit cards," according to Google chief executive Eric Schmidt.

At the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Schmidt said Android 2.3 (code-named Gingerbread) will combine location services with "tap-and-pay" functionality.

"Imagine that instead of typing my search, my phone is sending me information all the time," Schmidt said. "Maybe I tell [my phone] I need a pair of pants, and I get relevant information as I walk down the street."

Yeah, yeah.
Just as the Kindle will replace books.
Or the netbook the pc.
Or the Ipad the laptop.
Sure.

This was loud... I thought something hit my house...

Folks from Gainesville to Alexandria felt the earth move Monday afternoon. But why it moved is a mystery.

Just after 2 p.m., thousands of people heard booms and felt the earth rumble. Windows rattled and some worried residents called police dispatchers, who said they felt it, too.

The U.S. Geological Survey looked into whether a small quake struck, but said they recorded no seismic activity.

A call to Quantico Marine Corps Base turned up what might be the answer. The base is conducting munitions training this week, as it does most weeks. Those who live and work nearby often get their windows rattled, but the noise is generally isolated to the immediate area.

But also this week, Quantico is conducting "operational range clearance," which means they're blowing up a bunch of old munitions left out of the ranges. The booming might be more frequent, louder and made more jarring by overcast skies, the base said.

Earthquakes in the area aren't all that uncommon. In July, a 3.6-magnitude tremblor shook residents awake in the Washington region, jostling dishes and rattling windows. It was the strongest quake to hit within 30 miles of D.C. since the survey began keeping records.

Israel, Gilad Shalit's 1600th day of Captivity

On November 11th 2010 Israelis have marked 1600 days since the day Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit was captured by Hamas in a cross-border raid near Kerem Shalom and held as a prisoner in the Gaza Strip.

Gilad Shalit is an Israeli soldier who was captured on 25 June 2006 by Hamas in a cross-border raid and has been held as a prisoner in the Gaza Strip. He was the first Israeli soldier captured by Palestinian militants since 1994. His parents are camping outside of Israeli Prime Minister’s residence in Jerusalem to pressure the government into striking a deal for Shalit's release.

Since the day of the capture, the Israeli government and the International Community tried to reach a deal with Hamas for Gilad’s release but the negotiations have been stuck in recent months.

Hamas demands the release of 1,000 prisoners (450 of these jailed for violent attack on Israelis) but Israel refuses to agree to release most of them. A crescent part of the Israeli society and Gilad’s parents - Noam and Aviva - calls on Prime Minister to “make a courageous decision” and agree to the price set by Hamas for his release, but Benjamin Netanyahu has said that “the price is simply too high. Israel is willing to pay a heavy price for Shalit but not any price".

Hamas has refused requests to allow the International Red Cross to visit Shalit and only three letters, an audio and a video have been released to prove that Gilad - corporal in the IDF at the time of his abduction and recently promoted to staff sergeant - is still alive.

CA woman charged with terrorist aid

A California woman has been charged with conspiring to provide money and people to a Somali terrorist group to help carry out killings in the African nation, according to a federal indictment unsealed Monday.

Nima Ali Yusuf, a 24-year-old permanent resident of the U.S., conspired in Southern California and elsewhere to aid al-Shabab, an al-Qaida-linked militia trying to create an Islamic state in Somalia, the indictment states.

Federal prosecutors did not provide further details on the allegations.

Since 2007, roughly 20 men have left Minnesota to fight with al-Shabab. Authorities said one became the first known U.S. citizen to do a suicide bombing when he launched an attack in Somalia.

The FBI said he might have been "radicalized" in Minneapolis.

It wasn't immediately clear from the indictment whether Yusuf was connected to those men.

Yusuf was the fourth person charged in the past month in San Diego with helping al-Shabab. The others were accused of helping raise money and route funds to the radical Islamist group.

The indictments come as the U.S. government cracks down on those suspected of helping al-Shabab.

A key social conservative group is striking back at a fledgling alliance between a gay right wing organization and 15 leaders of local Tea Party chapters across the country who urged Republican leaders Monday to avoid social issues.

Citing a memo sent last week to Republican leadership, Concerned Women for America (CWA) CEO Penny Nance argued that social conservatives’ priorities for the next Congress could be easily embraced by those focused on spending issues.

My dad never wanted to talk about his war experiences. He insisted that he was just a REMF on a supply ship who never saw any action. Then I learned about Leyte Gulf and other actions of the USS White Plains. My dad always talked about his cousin the war hero, who survived the Bataan Death March.

In those days, everybody was a war hero whether they wanted to be or not.

We are definitely going to celebrate my father's life. So far, 7 of my 9 kids are heading for LA, including my daughter in Israel, though she may not make it for the funeral.

It says in the Book of Psalms: "Then our mouths shall be full of laughter." Our sages taught: At the Resurrection, there will be a great sound of laughter. What does that mean? A man who passed away at a very young age, will see his own son who lived to a great old age, and the young father and elderly son will embrace with laughter.

My grandfather, who passed away in 1918 at the age of 29, will see his 91-year-old son. He never saw his son during his lifetime.

Democrats reveal themselves as the Party of No on deficit reduction

[Link: seattletimes.nwsource.com...]

"By offering up their joint recommendation last week for balancing the budget, the co-chairmen of President Barack Obama's fiscal commission didn't solve our deficit problem once and for all, or clear a path through the political thickets facing would-be budget cutters. But Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson performed a valuable public service nonetheless: The reaction to their proposals demonstrated that when it comes to addressing the long-term challenges facing this country, the Democrats, too, can play the Party of No."

Govt urges youth to say 'non' to English words

In an attempt to rekindle love for the French language among the youth, France’s junior minister for cooperation and Francophonie awarded six students on Tuesday for their entries to ‘Francomot’, an online students-only competition to find the ideal replacements for popular English words in everyday French.

[snip]

To replace “buzz” – as in “online buzz” - the competition jury selected “ramdam”, a word originating from Arabic (evidently considered more Francophone than English in this case).

“Chat” was vanquished by two entries – “eblabla” and “tchatche”. Joyandet noted that the English word, like all the others in the competition, already had an official French alternative. France’s Commission of Terminology, a Ministry of Culture panel, notes “dialogue” (which has the same meaning in French and in English) as the alternative to chat.

“Tuning” – as in tuning cars – became “bolidage”. “Newsletter” was foiled by “infolettre” and “talk” was valiantly ousted by “débat”, which indeed means "debate" in English.

[snip]

On the jury were a dozen French personalities including the rapper MC Solaar (praised as “a dextrous handler of words” by Joyandet). Importantly, it was headed by Jean-Christophe Rufin, a member of the Académie Francaise - a venerable and peculiarly French institution, charged officially with the guardianship of the language.

Ukraine's topless group widens political role

Brazenly provocative, the bare-breasted young women of Femen are becoming an eye-catching -- if unsolicited -- fixture on Ukraine's political scene.

Anna Hutsol, Femen's spikey-haired 26-year-old leader, says she commands a small army of 300 mainly student activists ready to peel off in public to support Ukrainian women's rights.

As the group broadens its activities to embrace wider causes, she says Femen is undeterred by increased police action. "We plan more protests this year," Hutsol told Reuters.

Femen activists caused a minor diplomatic stir last month during a visit by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin with a topless street protest in which they made raunchy references to his personal life.

Last week two semi-clad Femen members disrupted an Iranian exhibition with a protest in support of an Iranian woman held in jail for adultery and complicity of murder.

Suspected US missiles kill 20 in NW Pakistan

Suspected American missiles slammed into a home and a speeding vehicle near the Afghan border Tuesday, killing 20 alleged militants as the U.S. ramps up unmanned drone strikes in northwestern Islamist strongholds, Pakistani officials said.

The eighth missile attack this month in Pakistan killed targets in North Waziristan, a mountainous tribal region that is a base for Taliban and al-Qaida-linked fighters responsible for many of the attacks on U.S. and NATO forces across the border in Afghanistan.

Worthy of a SNIP

Their proposals certainly weren't flawless, but they did manage to include good ideas from right and left alike. And it's illuminating, and very depressing, that Democrats were so immediately outraged by a plan that reduces corporate welfare, makes Social Security more progressive, slashes the defense budget, raises the tax rate on millionaires' summer homes — and does all of this while capping the government's share of gross domestic product, not at some Scrooge-like minimum but at the highest level in modern American history.

Needless to say, none of the liberal lawmakers attacking the Simpson-Bowles proposals offered alternative blueprints for restoring America's solvency. The Democratic Party has plans for many things, but a balanced budget isn't one of them.

But pondering what Nancy Pelosi and her compatriots are rejecting gives us a pretty good sense of what they're for. It's a world where the government perpetually warps the real-estate and health-care marketplaces, subsidizing McMansions and gold-plated insurance plans to the tune of billions every year. It's a world where federal jobs are sacrosanct, but the private sector has to labor under one of the higher corporate tax rates in the developed West. It's a world where the Social Security retirement age never budges, no matter how high average life expectancy climbs. And it's a world where federal spending rises inexorably to 25 percent of GDP and beyond, and taxes rise with it.

Done nothing except reduce the Bush deficit from 1.4trillion to 1.2 trillion in the first year.

The budget commission proposals disproportionately affected the poor and middle class. Big business and the rich get much more of a pass.
If everyone was being asked to sacrifice it'd have more momentum. It doesn't.

"Liberals defended this knee-jerk response on the grounds that the commissioners' vision, ostensibly bipartisan, was actually tilted toward Republican priorities. And it's true that Bowles and Simpson proposed more spending cuts than tax increases overall. But most of the programs and tax breaks that they suggested trimming — from farm subsidies to Defense Department bloat and the home-mortgage tax deduction — represent the American welfare state at its absolute worst. And the duo went out of their way to avoid balancing the budget on the backs of the poor. (Social Security, for instance, would be strengthened through a mix of tax increases and benefit cuts for wealthier seniors; retirees close to the poverty line would see their benefits increase.)"

Amid airport anger, GOP takes aim at screening

Mica, one of the authors of the original TSA bill, has recently written to the heads of more than 150 airports nationwide suggesting they opt out of TSA screening. "When the TSA was established, it was never envisioned that it would become a huge, unwieldy bureaucracy which was soon to grow to 67,000 employees," Mica writes. "As TSA has grown larger, more impersonal, and administratively top-heavy, I believe it is important that airports across the country consider utilizing the opt-out provision provided by law."

From Krugman in the NYT.

what the co-chairmen are proposing is a mixture of tax cuts and tax increases — tax cuts for the wealthy, tax increases for the middle class. They suggest eliminating tax breaks that, whatever you think of them, matter a lot to middle-class Americans — the deductibility of health benefits and mortgage interest — and using much of the revenue gained thereby, not to reduce the deficit, but to allow sharp reductions in both the top marginal tax rate and the corporate tax rate.

It will take time to crunch the numbers here, but this proposal clearly represents a major transfer of income upward, from the middle class to a small minority of wealthy Americans. And what does any of this have to do with deficit reduction?

Heh. Hyperbole rules the day on TSA screening. Never mind that the screening began under Bush and was continued by Obama Admin - and that the FBS are now more widespread after initial testing under the Bush Admin. The anger is about who is doing the implementing - even though it's the same plan outlined under Bush.

Fact is that the FBS impose far less radiation on people than a transcontinental flight would. Depending on the FBS model, it doesn't even use ionizing radiation, which is what could increase risks of cancer.

Then, there's the pilots opposition - which is really about their insistence not to be screened at all.

[Link: www.businessweek.com...]

Proponents of the budget proposal claim that less than 3% of small business owners have net household income above $250,000, the threshold over which tax rates go up under Obama's plan.

But tax analyses show that the percentage is likely to be on the lower side, and those taxed at higher rates—if the budget is approved as presented—are unlikely to be those most people think of when they hear "small business owner."

"Most small business owners aren't in the top two marginal tax rates. In my opinion, there's some misunderstanding in these political debates that the people who'll be affected are middle-income Americans who run mom-and-pop stores," says Benjamin Harris, senior research associate at the Tax Policy Center, a bipartisan venture of the Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution that aims to provide independent analyses of current and longer-term tax issues.

Amid airport anger, GOP takes aim at screening

Letter from Charles Jeszeck, Director, Homeland Security and Justice Issues to John Mica in May:

[...]

TSA has taken steps to strengthen passenger checkpoint screening procedures to enhance the detection of prohibited items, as well as to make checking of passenger names against the terrorist watchlist records more effective in detecting persons who may pose a threat to aviation security. These initiatives have been intended to improve aviation security, including that of airports and their terminals, which are often intermodal in nature. While making progress, TSA and other federal agencies have faced challenges in effectively implementing certain programs integral to ensuring aviation security.

[...]

On March 17, 2010, in an analysis of the December 25, 2009, attempted attack on Northwest flight 253, we reported that while TSA has taken actions towards strengthening other areas of aviation security, it continues to face challenges involving its efforts to procure and deploy advanced imaging technology (AIT) (formerly called the Whole Body Imager). We found that in response to the attack, TSA had revised the AIT procurement and deployment strategy, increasing the planned deployment of AITs from 878 to 1,800 units and using AITs as a primary—instead of a secondary—screening measure where feasible. While officials said AITs performed as well as physical pat downs in operational tests, it remains unclear whether the AIT would have detected the weapon used in the December 2009 incident based on the preliminary information we have received. We are currently assessing TSA’s operational testing of the AIT.

Israel's security is a layered approach and they key in on suspicious behavior. They ask detailed questions about itineraries and destinations, and they're highly trained to discern behavior that raises red flags.

Those that raise the red flags are subject to further screening.

About 100 times less radiation exposure than a 1600KM flight. Ironic about the pilots and aircrews. They have one of the highest radiation exposures in the workplace already. The AIT scanner would only add a miniscule amount to their exposure. Of course it is debatable that aircrews have to be screened as frequently.

Republicans have already gained as many as 60 seats in Congress, but when GOP gains are looked at on a state-by-state basis, the bloody picture for Democrats nationwide becomes even more gruesome. Several state legislatures made historic transitions to Republican hands — some for the first time since the 19th century — and nearly an entire generation of state Democrats saw its ranks obliterated.

Before "x-ray" scanning became politically incorrect:

2.11.2008
Why We Do What We Do: Additional Screening for People with Hip Replacements

We've received many comments and questions from people who have had hip replacements and other metal implanted in their bodies for medical reasons. Many want to be able to present a letter from their doctor, some type of medical card, or even an x-ray to confirm that it's for an authentic medical reason that they're alarming the metal detector.

We understand that this is an inconvenience to travelers who repeatedly have to go through additional security measures because of a medical condition, but we just can't accept a letter, a card or an x-ray. I’ll explain some of the reasons.

This is a true story: a passenger told a security officer that he knew he was going to set the metal detector off because he had a pin in his hip. He hoped the officer would give him a pass on additional screening. Instead, the security officer followed TSA guidelines patted down the passenger. Guess what? He found a gun strapped to the passenger’s leg. So, if the security officer had just taken his word for it, a gun would have gotten on the plane—and maybe even been in the seat next to you. Things like this happen all the time, more than you would think.

We know those of you with genuine medical conditions are not the problem. And we realize the additional screening makes your checkpoint experience a frustrating one. But if a passenger alarms the metal detector, our security officers must resolve the alarm or the passenger can't get on the plane. We want to be thorough and protect the safety of everyone. No officer wants to be the one to let a gun, knife or bomb get through to an airplane.

If terrorists (or people who just HAVE to take their gun or knife with them on the flight) thought they could get by with a letter from a doctor or medical ID card, they'd quickly find out a way to make fake ones. How can we tell the difference in just a few seconds in a busy checkpoint line? It may make it a bit easier for you—but it makes it way too easy for them. Unfortunately, the pat down is currently the only way to resolve the situation.

Like you, we’re not satisfied with this result either. So, we’ve been busy exploring less invasive technology solutions that will allow officers to distinguish passengers with metallic medical implants from those trying to sneak weapons through the checkpoint. Last year, we began field testing several different types of whole body imagers in Phoenix, Arizona. Some passengers who were required to undergo additional screening were given the option of going through a portal instead of a pat-down. We've gotten great feedback from passengers on the technology, so we plan to continue testing the technology in other airports like JFK in New York, LAX in California, and others later this Spring. If you happen to go through portal in Phoenix or other airports, write back and let us know what you think.

They'd take whatever information you have that can contribute to the person's care - such as what he or she was doing when they had the seizures, but they would not release any condition information to you because HIPAA protects the following:

* Information your doctors, nurses, and other health care providers put in your medical record
* Conversations your doctor has about your care or treatment with nurses and others
* Information about you in your health insurer’s computer system
* Billing information about you at your clinic
* Most other health information about you held by those who must follow these laws

In other words, once the doctor begins a course of treatment, that information is confidential and protected. You have to be an immediate family or authorized person to obtain said health information.

The other part of HIPPA gives you rights related to Group insurance plans, that's where the "portable" comes from.

Wait. It wasn't 600 billion. I'd have to check the exact figure.

Nevermind. It was 600 billion. Damn decaf tea.

OK That seams reasonable. I guess. You think it's OK?

Not particularly. Everyone here knows I have a heart defect. The chance of something happening to me is unlikely, but it's higher than the average person. I can't pick who I'm hanging out with when/if I happen to have a problem. :(

uh oh, here comes sweeping legislation banning gays and forcing women into the kitchen.

Lesbians Stopped From Graduating

18-year-old Melissa McKenzie said she was kicked out of Del City High School in Del City, Okla., at the beginning of the semester when the principal found out she was living with her girlfriend instead of her family.

Oklahomophobia FTW!

The horrible thing, is that it doesn't even matter. Very frustrating. It was such a misery for me with my friend. I didn't have his mother's number handy. Do you have your friends' mothers' phone numbers? No.

So first, I had to call a variety of people just to get the number. Then I had to leave her a lovely message that went something like, "You don't know me, but I'm you're son's neighbor and he blah blah blah." Yeesh. Then wait for her to get the message and get back to me. Meanwhile he's lying on a gurney and they did nothing for the 2 hours it took her to get back to me.

re: #479 marjoriemoon

I can understand signed doctor's notes won't cut it, but if someone requests a pat down, they should be given a pat down and no questions should be asked about it.

When I get to the first TSA gurard I hand him/her my ticket, ID, and pacemaker card. Then I say that I have a pacemaker and I would like to request a patdown.

I have noticed that when you have medical reason, (even if it is an "invisible disability") TSA tends to treat you gentler - more time to gather your stuff, a little more patient during the patdown routine. If you want a patdown just because you don't want to go through the metal detector or scanner, that's what you'll get - but it will be a doozy!

/ No one has touched my junk in quite a while. :(

LOL It's a different world, isn't it and all the ironies that are included.

It's inevitable, I guess, that you have to give this info to TSA. I guess it's your choice to fly. Not so much your choice to keel over, but it is what it is.

One of the "hooks" I use on my blog is that when I go to a Heart Conference to speak, I use my private plane - a red Gulfstream V named Heart Force One. TSA makes you wish you actually had your own plane! (Or a Netjet share!)
