Rangel Found Guilty on Ethics Charges

Politics • Views: 21,582

To no one’s surprise, New York Democrat Charles Rangel has been found guilty of ethics violations.

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) has been found guilty on 11 ethics charges, ending a two-year investigation into his personal finances.

A special eight-member panel of the House ethics committee, after deliberating for roughly six hours, found that there was “clear and convincing evidence” that Rangel had violated House ethics on 11 of the 13 charges he faced heading into a rare public ethics trial.

As annoying as it will be to hear the right crow about this, I am glad he was found guilty and it shows that dems at least make the effort to police their own.

So this is the part where the wingnuts howl in victory and scream for blood, followed up with shrill outrage that no matter what the punishment turns out to be, it fell short.

Not surprised he's guilty, because he's a lifetime uberdouche, but surprised he was actually found guilty. Knock me over with a feather.

A friend of mine actually got me to start playing WoW. Honestly, I like it so far. The story is pretty good and the UI is pretty nice plus it seems like the devs listen to the players. Granted it's only going to hold me over until the 40k MMO, Diablo III, or the second part of Starcraft II comes out but so far I am digging it.

11 DaddyG  Tue, Nov 16, 2010 10:24:51am

What would the outcome have been for a private citizen (not of the legislature) who was guilty of the same offenses?

Anyone?

Is Rangle still on the hook for tax charges in addition to the action taken today?

I don't take him for the resign in shame type.

Lets see.....a one day senate hearing.....a stylized flounce out of chambers by Rangel.....a soon to be announced minor punishment. Anyone else suspect the fix is in? This has been entirely engineered to make it go away quick.

Having been a former WoW player, I will say it was plenty of fun until I got tired of grinding through the umpteenth quest to go kill 50 whatevers.

I switched to DDO (Dungeons and Dragons online) and like it a lot better. Not so grindy, and lends itself better to pickup gaming where I found that being a solo was a lot harder in WoW.

I don't mind quest grinding. I got tired of the grinding in Age of Conan since it was, literally, the same quests over and over for the lvl 80 faction stuff. Soloing hasn't been completely headache free, I have died a few times (which is a good thing) actually had to work on pulling and such. Plus I enjoy PvP and there is a point to it in WoW, same goes for guilds, in Age of Conan any race could be a member of any guild and there was never the level of tension between races. In WoW it appears that Horde sticks with Horde etc.

You end up doing the same dungeons over and over again in DDO, but the nice thing is you can do them with a different group each time, which really makes the whole thing much more interesting, I usually try to play with as many newbies as I can find and not give them any clues that I know what I'm doing either.

Chaosium was one of the best. But for just plain getting through combat quick and simplicity, I still like the first edition AD&D rules. Once they started getting nutty with all the supplements, etc, I just lost interest.

But my style of play was to use the rules to help move the plot along rather than to make the game a real time strategy game with single man units.

Its not really a happy day for anyone when an elected official gets caught with his or her hands in the cookie jar, till, mistress, etc.

Given the GOPs talent for debauchery and the Dems talent for graft while all the time railing against the very things they do; the line from Hamlet: "The lady doth protest too much, methinks." may be a good barometer of public officials shenanigans.

I think I got disgusted about the time they started on the whole "official" bullshit. To me it was just a way to get people to spend money on supplements.

But as my campaigns were mostly short term and of fairly small scope, they all pretty much featured the generic midieval fantasy setting and I focused more on the characters and situations.

Best time I had was the Monty Python and the Holy Grail campaign which I ended up running at GenCon back when it was still being held in Kenosha WI (78 or 79 if I recall)

The big gain in my mind was when they got rid of the negative Armor Classes and just went to something a little easier to calculate. Everyone did THAC0 anyway, but that is the one change that made it a lot easier.

Runequest was a lot of fun, as was Call of Cthulhu. GURPS was a great concept but after taking an hour to get through a combat that would have taken 5 minutes in D&D I gave up on it.

Yeah, GURPS was nuts. I like the Chaosium system because it did away with figuring XP and it did away with ridiculous HP issues. A cultist with a sword was a serious opponent whether you were a new recruit or a seasoned veteran. None of the the D&D issue of "I've got 89 hit points, he's got 6. I'll be right back" nonsense.

I dunno, the dice could mess with ya anyway. I had a single Hobgoblin with 1 hit point take out an entire party through a series of improbabledice rolls. He went down in group history as the Samurai Hobgoblin.

re: #24 Dreggas

I don't mind quest grinding. I got tired of the grinding in Age of Conan since it was, literally, the same quests over and over for the lvl 80 faction stuff. Soloing hasn't been completely headache free, I have died a few times (which is a good thing) actually had to work on pulling and such. Plus I enjoy PvP and there is a point to it in WoW, same goes for guilds, in Age of Conan any race could be a member of any guild and there was never the level of tension between races. In WoW it appears that Horde sticks with Horde etc.

PvP in WoW is super intense. A heck of a lot of fun, but it was consuming me. I had to let it go.

re: #4 theheat

Not surprised he's guilty, because he's a lifetime uberdouche, but surprised he was actually found guilty. Knock me over with a feather.

Oh, that he was guilty was not in doubt. The panel was hinting that the facts of the case were undisputed and indisputable. The only question is what the punishment will be. After all, Rangel admitted to a bunch of the issues - the rent stabilized apartment mess, the tax issues, but disputed that he did anything wrong with the lobbying for the Rangel Center at CUNY.

The only question is whether he gets the slap on the wrist or gets expelled. I think he ultimately deserves expulsion - after all, he was chair of the very committee that sets tax policy and yet he broke the law and avoided paying taxes over a period of years that shows he blatantly disregarded the very law he was writing.

Yet, at the same time, his constituents had no problem reelecting him. That's perhaps the bigger story here. They reelected him in 2008, after the allegations came to light, they reelected him in 2010 in the primary and then general election. Voters had 4 chances to send him packing, and refused in each instance. That's absolutely incredible for a situation - the tax avoidance/evasion - that would hit most anyone with significant penalties and possibly jail.

Ring guilty on five counts in Abramoff bribery case
By Spencer S. Hsu
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, November 16, 2010

A federal jury Monday convicted Washington lobbyist Kevin A. Ring on five of eight counts related to the Jack Abramoff bribery and influence-peddling scandal, handing a victory to the Justice Department unit charged with fighting corruption in government.

After a two-week trial and three days of deliberation, the D.C. panel of eight men and four women found Ring guilty on charges of conspiracy, fraud and illegal gratuities related to his work with disgraced lobbyist Abramoff and Ring's former boss, then-Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-Calif.).

The jury acquitted Ring, of Kensington, on three counts of fraud in his dealings with John C. Albaugh, chief of staff to then-Rep. Ernest J. Istook Jr. (R-Okla.), who recanted his testimony against Ring shortly before trial.

Continues.

Dragonlance campaign. We had a minotaur gladiator charge a green dragon, deliver 86 points of damage in a single hit and it was still up. It was me, then the dragon. So the noble bard swings his sword, barely hits and scratches the dragon for 1 points. The dragon fell over dead. It only had 87 hit points and it passed its system shock roll for massive damage.

Of course, history recorded the tail as the noble bard defeating the dragon with his faithful, but somewhat dim, minotaur companion, because hey, are you going to belief the talking cow or the charming half elf with a ring of human influence and a skill specialization in story telling?

It's an excuse to run fuzzy breast and penis pictures.

The outrage over the pat downs is limited (as revealed by recent polling).

Shortly after 9/11 I flew from Atlanta to Colorado Springs and back. On the way home a young handsome security agent was patting down anyone who caused the metal detector to go off. I was asked to take off my shoes and belt and submit to a pat down. I cooperated while an older woman behind me in line watched. When she got to the security gate she chimed in a sing song voice. "Oh goodie its my turn!" The handsome young security guard blushed brightly.

re: #89 Cannadian Club Akbar

I really want to rip the soul patch off of the little bitch who made "Loose Change".

Dylan Avery? Alex Jones was the executive producer for Loose Change. Right now Drudge is linking to an article by Paul Joseph Watson (in addition to Jones). Regarding Watson:

In 2001, Watson and Jones launched their newest project, the International Conspiracy, a virtual band meant to rival the highly popular Gorillaz. Their debut album, "International Conspiracy (album)|International Conspiracy" failed to rival the Gorillaz own self-titled debut album, however. In light of this, Watson began work on a film to promote the band, entitled the Global Conspiracy Tour, starring himself and Alex Jones going on a road trip with David Icke, to see the International Conspiracy on tour.

Re David Icke:

Icke, David. Added 9/30/01. In an essay on his Web site titled "Alice in Wonderland and the WTC disaster," conspiracy theorist and anti-Semite David Icke writes, "If you are looking for the force behind the U.S. atrocities, just ask: who benefits?" According to Icke, the September 11 attacks were the doing of the Illuminati, "the force that seeks to control this world and introduce its global fascist state." Although the world was moving towards global centralized fascism, Icke writes, it was not moving fast enough to suit the elites, who saw opposition to their globalization plans growing. As a result, they planned something of "enormous magnitude" that would "so devastate the collective human mind" that "solutions" could be offered that "would advance the agenda in a colossal leap almost overnight." According to Icke, Osama Bin Laden, though "deeply misguided," is no more responsible for the attacks than Icke was. He was the equivalent of Lee Harvey Oswald, a convenient villain upon which the crime could be blamed.

136 Our Precious Bodily Fluids  Tue, Nov 16, 2010 11:22:37am

For many Texans, it's permanently 1983.

Plano ISD has scrapped plans to remove a humanities textbook after a couple complained about photos of ancient nude sculptures and other works of art.

The couple noted 49 images they consider objectionable in a PowerPoint presentation they sent to the district. Many were of Greek and Roman sculptures depicting frontal male nudity. Among the more modern images they cite are photographs of Michelangelo's David and The Kiss by Auguste Rodin, along with reproductions of paintings including The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli, The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus by Peter Paul Rubens, The Third of May 1808 , by Francisco Goya, The Picnic by Edouard Manet, and The Swimming Hole by Thomas Eakins.

Rozann Marquis and her husband, Jeremy, said they have decided to initiate that review.

"It's my kid's welfare. I'll do whatever I need to do," Jeremy Marquis said.

The couple, whose 14-year-old daughter takes the class, say the college-level textbook reveals the darkest of artistic expressions.

Good going, genius. You're kid's studying college-level material at age 14, and rather than being overjoyed, you're terrified that she's going to see a marble dong or an 18th century painting of of boobies. Also, imagine being 14, and your hysterical parents have a conniption that makes national news. As if that weren't enough, you had the unmitigated audacity to make a frickin PowerPoint presentation, which by itself should be grounds for a restraining order.

Abby Krach said she considers herself "a pretty innocent 15-year-old." But the humanities student at Jasper High School said the book amounts to a paper tour through an art museum.

"It would be ridiculous for us to learn about Greek art without ever looking at some of its most famous and significant statues," she said. "It's just as ridiculous as removing everybody's book because of one parent complaint."

Her book sat open Monday night as she prepared for the next day's test.

"All they are is nude men, standing," she said.

... which demonstrates in part why she's in a G&T class.

The best part? My chief ally in most party disputes was the Paladin, because we were both lawful, he could not make a sense motive test to save his life (ironically, if he made it, it likely would have ended his life soon after) and if he did use sense evil, there was always something much worse than me around.

My favorite D&D moment: I was playing a mad (crazy) mage who had been impressed into service. The captain paid us for a job with pouches full of, like, a hundred copper pieces maybe. Mage not happy. Mage makes his up to a rooftop in the city's poor quarter, casts Fool's Gold on the copper pieces and starts tossing them to the masses starting a riot :D

Yes, although I suspect they'll work George Soros into the plot. Alex Jones can still blame the Jews and Fox viewers can blame the Jewish Puppet Master as exposed by Beck last week. Everybody will be happy with that middle ground.

My favorite D&D character is my namesake. He was a Drow Necromancer/Death Priest in the Ravenloft setting, oh and he was NE. Needless to say he had to make a lot of dark curse/gift checks. When I stopped playing him he was a paranoid schizophrenic with god like intelligence (thanks Contraption) and had to drink blood every day. His skin was scaly but he had vampiric charisma (the powers checks) and was a LOT of fun. The other player who played his companion was a CE dwarven fighter who happened to be a were-badger....loads of fun.

I guess I'm one jaded sonofabitch, but I would be surprised if there was a single member of Congress that you couldn't find guilty of some kind of ethical violation. Maybe a handful in the House, but 'creative ethics' seems like a prerequisite for the Senate.

I know this is kind of Alex Jones-y of me, but I always feel like these are show trials set up as punishment for stepping out of line, and that's why it seems like, unless you get busted being a gay Republican, 9 times out of 10 you keep your job and maybe lose your seat on some committee.

Not trying to excuse whatever Rangel did (I honestly haven't read the details), or playing the 'both sides are the same' card, just opining on how I always perceive these ethics hearings.

Yep. Ideology by consensus or blog decree. Drudge of course sets the tone. Typically, Fox News follow Drudge. The lower rung right wing blogs will follow both. Whatever news is promoted by drudge become the general consensus or meme of the day which sometimes morphs into urban legends. Human beings are social animals so the need to fit in requires those within the right wing blogging group to adhere to that consensus through peer pressure. Therefore, in the case of the current TSA hysteria, if you want to call yourself "a true right wing" person as defined by these groups you have to be against the TSA; AIT scans; pat downs searches; and believes everything that Alex Jones tells you by way of the blog king maker, Drudge Report.

Gee, I thought an 18 year old could live wherever they damn well pleased.

It may be the school cannot let them enroll if they are not residing in the boundaries the school serves. We had an issue trying to grandfather our kids into their school with a cross town move. We loved the school and wanted them to finish 6th grade before moving them to the new Jr. High but the district said no way.

There is an issue here that resides with the family and their daughter. Why did she feel compelled to live with the girlfriend and not the family. Was she kicked out? Or was she just rebelling for reasons other than sexuality?

If the live in arrangment was because of a family rift then the school could have been in deep trouble admitting her outside of the boundary.

There just isn't enough info. here to know.

Its kind of hard to se him go away right after his return from the mission but I am excited about his future. We all feel that his service will be more than well compensated for by the opportunities the military provide. He is also realistic about the risk and work that is involved.

I was a student of art history, which - surprise - parallels real history. But the fundies want none of that, of course. It offends me greatly. The fact they are hell-bent on denying history, or anything considered beautiful, offends me.

PS - And a couple of my best friends, both male and female, were nude models (myself included). There's nothing freaky about it except the freaks that thrive on freaking the fuck out. And they can stand in line to kiss my bare bum.

DOWN WITH POORLY WRITTEN ARTICLES. And Yes, I have to scream that. Drives me batty.

In that very short article it says two things. First:

Two female high school students in Oklahoma are firing back at their school for refusing to let them graduate after discovering the two are a couple.

Then it says:

School administrators defended their stance, saying neither of the former students filed complaints,...

So which is it?

Then, just to make you really crazy, they lead you to believe the principal said this, which clearly, s/he did no such thing.

"The principal will say, Well, you're gay." ...

Not DID say, but WILL say. She's making something up here.
