Glad to hear it. It’d have been a travesty if she, the only actual Democratic leader worthy of the name in Congress, had lost out on a leadership role while Harry Reid kept his.

She had little to do with the Democratic defeat, she just had the misfortune of being at the helm when it hit.

I don’t like Pelosi, I think she’s a corporatist Democrat of a rather dangerous type.

However, as a speaker, she was very successful in the face of unprecedented obstructionism.

As much as I wish they’d choose Weiner as the leader, I know that’s unrealistic.

I like Weiner.

If nothing else, between Palin’s “announcement” and Pelosi’s election today, we should be in a for a very entertaining couple of years.

Before any claims that this outcome “rewards” a loser, it might be worth mentioning that, while the Blue Dog caucus lost 28 members in the midterm shellacking, the Progressive caucus only lost 4.

This is what the Dems get for never being able to form a cohesive message. Amongst those blue dogs, there were many who lost to the worst sorts of teabags and corporate shills, because they could not have any sort of strong central messagging. On their own, the blue dogs had to take a much harder line than they might have if there were a clear message they could have rallied behind. ON their own, in the absence of that message, they only were the weakest culled from the heard.

The Dems in the center of the party didn’t even give them a second thought and really couldn’t be bothered to support them by presenting a real alternative message to the GOP’s strongly sated one. As such people who had a little cool aid thought that the blue dogs were jst weak forms of the message they subscribed to and there was nothing to replace it.

Either the Dems learn to work as a team or they fall to pieces. This happens again and again. The GOP is very good at goose stepping in one direction. The Dems on the other hand are very good at making their own petty fiefdoms and undercutting each other.

Weiner was all geared up to run for Mayor before the City Council, realizing that term limits were going to mean they had to get real jobs, changed the law to allow themselves and Mayor Bloomberg an additional term in office. No doubt, he is still waiting for his chance, and the glass ceiling he just hit will do nothing to dissuade him.

The Dems

I read an analysis recently which pointed out that many of the Dems who lost were in districts that were not heavily Dem. Viewed in that light, the issue is more a function of the moderates being at the whim of independent voters. In the 2008 election, independents showed their displeasure with 8 years of Repub rule by voting against Repubs (which the liberal Dems incorrectly claimed as a mandate for the change they desired) and in 2010 those same independents showed their displeasure with 2 years of a Dem monopoly on the levers of power by voting against Dems (which the Repubs and Tea Partiers are incorrectly claiming as a mandate for the changes they desire). In both cases, the safe Dem and Repub districts were unaffected. It is thus only those in the middle, which lacks the ability to rely upon a knee jerk base of hardliners for support, that is voted in or out of office. In neither case, however, did the results indicate that the nation, as a whole, is anything other than centrist.

O/T

This is one of the most stomach-churning things I’ve ever seen. Right-wing pseudo-journalist James O’Keefe decided to do an expose on the teachers unions. So he sent one of his flunkies to a bar after a teachers’ conference to buy drinks for a special education teacher named Alissa Ploshnick, and prompt her to dish about incompetent colleagues while secretly recording her. One of Ploshnick’s stories was that a colleague of hers referred called a student a n****r” and was demoted but not fired. She was clearly outraged.

Guess what happened? O’Keefe released the recorded, and got Ploshnick suspended for using the n-word. Yes — the teacher who, in what she thought was a private setting, complained about a colleague using a slur is suspended.

[Link: www.tnr.com…]

I am not going to say what I hope O’Keefe gets during one of his little outings.

Bonus:

The teacher was recognized by President Clinton for saving her students lives…

Alissa Ploshnick risked her life to save the lives of a dozen Passaic schoolchildren. She threw herself in front of a careening van to protect her students and landed in the hospital with broken ribs, a fractured wrist, a badly bruised pelvis and glass cuts in her eyes. She could have died.

O’Keefe and Breitbart are stalking private citizens uninvolved in government at all at this point. Somebody needs to stop them.

Reminds me of an oldie, but goodie, in keeping with the season:

Having bought a new parrot shortly before Thanksgiving, John was horrified that the bid constantly cursed in ways that would make a longshoreman blush. Finally having had enough one day, John threw the bird into the freezer, thinking to teach the bird a lesson. The bird continued to curse for a few minutes, at which point it became completely silent. John, fearing he had accidentally killed the bird, opened the freezer, at which point the parrot stepped forward and, polite as could be, said “I am very sorry, sir, for my inappropriate behavior in the past and if I have caused you any annoyance or emabrrassment. I promise that I will henceforth be most careful to observe only the best manners.” Surprised at this turn, but certainly pleased that the bird seemed to have been taught a lesson, John placed the parrot back on his perch, at which point he heard, “Ahem. If I may be so bold as to ask, sir…..What did the turkey do?”

Wisconsin Man Shoots TV Over Bristol Palin’s Dance

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A rural Wisconsin man blasted his television set with a shotgun after watching Bristol Palin’s “Dancing with the Stars” routine Monday night, saying he was fed up with politics and Palin wasn’t a very good dancer, according to court documents.

Steven Cowan, 67, of the town of Vermont, about 15 miles west of Madison, then pointed the gun at his wife, 66-year-old Janice Cowan, who escaped and called police, authorities said. A SWAT team surrounded the couple’s farmhouse, and officers were able to talk Cowan out Tuesday morning after an all-night standoff.

Blue Dogs need liberal votes too:

The Blue Dogs have blamed the nationalization of Tuesday’s elections for their downfall. Some of them had tried to distance themselves from the Democratic agenda and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — “but it just wasn’t enough.”

However, “talking with voters in some of those districts, it was a little bit trickier,” Elliott says. “They were frustrated, I think, seeing how, on one hand, you stand up and you say, ‘I voted against health care,’ but there are some Democrats in your district who might have wanted to see you vote for health care. So there was this tricky line they were trying to walk.”

It’s been mentioned here in posts before, it was only a matter of time before they began to become hostile to Jews. On one hand, they want to support them, and on the other, they fall into Jew-hate and Jew-blame pretty comfortably. I know many religious people who claim they hate them. These are Christian and Catholic GOPs, BTW. It’s a head scratcher, this liove/hate thing, and much of it is religiously motivated. As the GOP goes more crazy religious, it should manifest even more.

I dont think they learned, they are going to vote against the unemployed getting an extinction unless the wealthy get their tax welfare.
They just voted voted unanimously against legislation to close the pay gap between women and men.[Link: www.govtrack.us…]

They want to make the tax cuts for the top 2% permanent which will add $700 Billion to the deficit over the next 10 years
They want to repeal the new HCR bill thus adding $138 billion back onto the deficit.
Most Republican are against a plan to cut some defence spending that could save the country another $ 960 billion Between 2011 and 2020.

Christie recently praised O’Keefe’s secret taping of Ploshnick and others and said: “If you need an example of what I’ve been talking about for the last nine months — about how the teachers union leadership is out of touch with the people and out of control — go watch this video.’’
Asked whether the stories of Ploshnick’s sacrifice and heroism changed his view, Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak replied: “What do these stories have to do with recent events? What should they have to do with recent events? They are completely separate and have nothing to do with one another.”

These GOP candidates ran on one thing and one thing alone that a vote for the Democrat was a vote for Pelosi. Long time Democratic House members Gene Taylor (MS) and Lincoln Davis (TN) who are as conservative as most Republicans lost because they belong to the same party as Pelosi.

Gus is 100% right that this is terrible strategy on the Democrats part and will insure that they will lose even more seats in 2012.

It’s not a “strategy” and it doesn’t matter what anyone else says. The Democrats didn’t lose seats because of Pelosi they lost because of the see saw. Things are bad, sides switch. It’s not rocket science.

The Democrats need tough and directed leadership and she provides that, in spades, regardless of what the huge smear machine mobilized against her says. Why… btw do you think there IS such a rabid frenzy of hate directed at her by the right? Because she’s effective and a tenacious opponent.

She won, she rocks.. fuck the haters.
