My World Series hangover has had me completely tuned out of, and disinterested in football. Turning on the UCLA/WU game now to see if I can rekindle that flame.

I would say cigar box, but you know what I means. He hears it. Real deal. Sings too! Nice choice.Little Joe With Danny Gatton for those who like this stuff, like me. Thanks Charles.

Most years I'd say "what series?" as I'm not a baseball fan. I did actually watch three games of the series this year though. That's probably the most games of baseball I have watched in a calendar year in my life (yes, literally. I dislike baseball rather intensely) , but hey this was far more interesting than the usual Yankees' bought it script. I slightly favored the Rangers simply because it was their first time there ever but, meh, in the end it is still only baseball.

(a self serving repost from this morning... for the night crew)

The fault for all this "push back" about the TSA enhanced pat downs can be laid right at the feet of the left. After 30 years of nanny state state oppressive laws, they have created a nation of wimps.

What was, in the past, a friendly little "feeling up" on a date, has now become equated with sexual abuse or worst.

What was, in the past, a humorous little college prank of exposing oneself to a group of people, or streaking naked through a festive crowd, will now get you put on a sexual offenders list.

All sorts of playful, sexual interactions, what was, in the past, an acceptable way of blowing off sexual "steam" (and getting laid), now lays in the waste bin of youthful indiscretions.

What happened to the sexual revolution of the 60's? Did we win the battle but loose the war?

Let's stop this puritanical mind fuck and let it all hang out. Embrace the pat downs (the TSA certainly will). When was the last time a stranger touched you there? It's a testament to your latent animal magnetism to be groped by a person in a uniform.

It's not junk. It's a pleasure device, a handheld game... your own personal ITouch.

Enjoy.

I paid 4 years of college tuition by fundraising for my University. There are LOTS of benches & water fountains, where my donators wanted them to be. I was and am NOT a fan of the "general fund". My biggest donation was over $10 million. He wanted help from me directing his money. It was a good job, but I don't miss it.

Okay. My youngest student is exactly like that. At that age all must be a game. Games that happen to emphasize dodging/deflecting/catching incoming objects. Games that demand balance and quick feet, but just a little at a time. The coolest thing is being the hardest human being to hit ever. By ball or by slap or by car. Eyes and actions. Dodgeball rocks to get this across at single digit ages. Coordination is limited so its about playing the right games a lot.

That's all ya get on the internet. I need to know more to say more.

Talk to the master and trust your people instincts. If you smell bluster and bullshit, walk away. If you like what you see look a bit closer, watch two classes. Then choose. Think of the first 6 months as a firm commitment and a probation time. By then you really know.

Ever get to LA?

Twice in my life. The first time, the only sane conversation I had was with a bag lady. Yes, literally. Last time was on my way to Vietnam to pick him up.

We go him at three months so he has no memory of his homeland. Yet he gave each of mom and dad a construction paper flag of Vietnam (yes, red rectangle, gold star. What else would the internet show him? He has no baggage from 1968) the other day because he knows he was born there. It means nothing else to him. But I'd wear that paper flag _any_ where because of who gave it to me.

God help any teabagger that gives me any grief over it...

We'll have to see how this goes. I don't think they go that far. But Beck is tempting them to run a risk with their bread and butter issue of national security. The GOP shouldn't follow him on this one. If that means some of the base walks, let them walk. National Security is an issue the GOP cannot afford to lose. Not for Beck, not for Ron Paul, not for anyone.

I think the game's already over. The GOP lost the issue of national security soon after the election with the reaction to the DHS memo. All the national security concerns were quickly abandoned in favor of anti-government paranoia. Game over.

....Dozens of America's wealthiest taxpayers -- including hedge fund legend Michael Steinhardt, super trial lawyer Guy Saperstein, and Ben Cohen of Ben & Jerry's fame -- have appealed to President Obama not to renew the Bush tax cuts for anyone earning more than $1 million a year. Calling themselves "Patriotic Millionaires for Fiscal Strength," the 40-plus signers today launched a website and a campaign that they hope will draw support from others who agree that fiscal responsibility should begin with those who can best afford it -- as their letter to Obama explains:

We are writing to urge you to stand firm against those who would put politics ahead of their country.

For the fiscal health of our nation and the well-being of our fellow citizens, we ask that you allow tax cuts on incomes over $1,000,000 to expire at the end of this year as scheduled.

We make this request as loyal citizens who now or in the past earned an income of $1,000,000 per year or more.

We have done very well over the last several years. Now, during our nation's moment of need, we are eager to do our fair share. We don't need more tax cuts, and we understand that cutting our taxes will increase the deficit and the debt burden carried by other taxpayers. The country needs to meet its financial obligations in a just and responsible way.

Letting tax cuts for incomes over $1,000,000 expire, is an important step in that direction.

I'm a little gunshy about getting back into paying for gaming again, as it's extremely expensive. I'm planning to run a free implementation of 1st Edition adapted to the d20 engine. (in otherwords the only thing that's truly changed is positive instead of negative armor classes.)

Never played 2nd Edition. I had dropped AD&D in favor of the rewritten and simplified D&D rules by the time it came out, simply because I felt like I was being told I had to buy too damn many books. It wasn't like I really needed all those rules to run a good game anyway. Once you get a basic combat and action resolution system set up, the rest can be handled by a competent DM, in my opinion. At that point the rule books become supporting material rather than the source of argument they became in some of my groups.

An archaic accoutrement, long since discarded by advanced species. You can sometimes still see them being worn 'ironically' by a degenerate and retrograde species known as "Hipsters". A pitiful and lowly species that neither understands clothing nor irony. Nor do they understand work or hardship really, thanks to a coming of age ritual known among their kind as the "Trust Fund".

Just watched the Glenn Beck segments on TDS website (links don't work yet).

For those of you who haven't seen it yet, Jon dedicated two segments to Glenn Beck's anti-Soros conspiracy-fest from last week.
The second part "The Manchurian Lunatic" had to be one of the best takedowns that Stewart has ever done. He did the entire segment in a Beck-style rant, complete with two blackboards, marionettes and hand-puppets. "Ass-surgery" from now on will always be associated with a rather disturbing mental image of Glenn and Rupert Murdoch's forearm for me.

224 AK-47%  Fri, Nov 19, 2010 2:02:43am

It was a good takedown because it demonstrates that by applying Beck's standards of plausibility, you can prove anything with two blackboards and a pair of glasses.

New York City Said to Be Firing Thousands of Workers to Close Budget Gap
[Link: www.bloomberg.com...]

New York City will fire thousands of workers to save $1.5 billion while facing a projected $3.3 billion budget deficit in the next fiscal year, said a city official familiar with the plan who requested anonymity because it hasn’t been made public.

Stephen Goldsmith, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s deputy for operations, has scheduled a briefing today to disclose how many workers will be fired in each city agency, the official said. The city, which has projected a $65 billion budget next year, employs more than 300,000 workers.

Johann Hari: The religious excuse for barbarity

[Link: www.independent.co.uk...]

Britain is famously a nation of animal lovers who turn doe-eyed and gooey at the sight of any furry creature. So why are we sitting silently while our treatment of many of our animals regresses to the standards of the sixth century?

It is true that, at the moment, there is a frightening rise in real bigotry against Muslims and, to a lesser but still significant extent, Jews. Some people who object to the rise of halal meat try to fit it into a preposterous narrative where Britain is somehow being "taken over" by the 4 per cent of its population who are Muslim, presumably via the Protocols of the Elders of Mecca. I have written many articles against this resurgent bigotry, and I can see why some people would be shy about anything that would look like piling on.

But the only consistent position is to oppose viciousness against these minorities, and to oppose viciousness by these minorities. The proponents of halal and kosher meat are choosing to inflict terrible and unnecessary pain on living creatures every day. It would be condescending to treat them as victim-children who are exempt from moral debate – and it would be a betrayal of the real victims here: the sentient creatures having their throats cut.

We need to be much more self-confident in criticising religious claims. Your ideas do not deserve any special status because you say they came from an invisible, supernatural being.

No, we don't respect your desire to needlessly torment animals because some hallucinating desert nomads did it centuries ago. We don't respect it at all. You can cry that we are "persecuting" you if we stop you committing acts of cruelty if you want.

It's what the religious – Christian, Jew and Muslim alike – did when we stopped you tormenting women and gays and anybody else you could get your hands on. One of the great markers of the advance of human kindness is that the howls you will hear are from the Men of God.

246 sattv4u2  Fri, Nov 19, 2010 5:09:51am

re: #244 Taqyia2Me

Seniority clauses in union contracts often muddy those waters.

And in some cases those are the people that have the highest salaries and least impact. Due to their seniority they were "pushed" up into created management/ supervisory positions as a reward for longevity

They also have the most expensive benefits/ compensation packages (more paid time off,,, higher cost for employee matched 401 K contributions,,,etc)

Again, as FBV intimated, I hate to see anyone lose a job,, ESPECIALLY this time of year, but these cities/ towns/ counties/ states HAVE to do something. The private sector has (for the most part) cut work forces to the bone. Here,. we used to have 12 technicians/ engineers covering a 24/7 control room (not counting a manager and a supervisor). Today, we have 5 plus the manager and no super..

Oct. Climate Change Pew poll they plugged the other day:
[Link: pewresearch.org...]

A 53%-majority of Republicans say there is no solid evidence the earth is warming. Among Tea Party Republicans, fully 70% say there is no evidence. Disbelief in global warming in the GOP is a recent occurrence. Just a few years ago, in 2007, a 62%-majority of Republicans said there is solid evidence of global warming, while less than a third (31%) said there is no solid evidence. Currently, just 38% of Republicans say there is solid evidence the earth is warming, and only 16% say that warming is caused by human activity. In 2007, three-in-ten Republicans said global warming was the result of human activity. Also, by nearly a two-to-one margin, Republicans say scientists do not agree that the earth is getting warmer because of human activity. Few Republicans see global warming as a very serious problem (14%) or in need of immediate government action (24%).

Behold the power of climate skeptic propaganda -- 70% of Tea Partiers see no evidence of a warming planet (not even whether or not it's influenced by man, just if there's evidence it's happening at all). Only three years ago the GOP "no evidence" number was just 31%.

I have a proposal for the TSA. First, have two lines. One for those travelers who just want to get to their flights without turning security check into an attack on their personal liberties, and one for the drama queens. Create an "express lane" for said drama queens, their wives/husbands, and the herd of children they're dragging along for when they refuse the scan and/or pat down. Make it one of those opaque aisles that seem to go someplace and give the illusion of progress. And have that habitrail spit them back out at the back of the line so they can reconsider their decision on their next pass.

Glad to see Mr. Bonamassa is going over so well with everyone here, and thanks, Charles.

On topic -- I don't know how long-term this is planned to be, but it seems to be something similar to Chickenfoot and Them Crooked Vultures (i.e., known solo guys forming a band together, I just hate the term "supergroup") --

Just about the entire Falwell family appeared on my Facebook "People you may know" list. Really. I don't know them.

By the way... Goldeneye is on. My favorite of the Bond movie opening scenes...

I don't know if anyone's seen the clips from Sarah Palin's "Alaska" show, but there's one that made me smile. She's shown shooting a gun, which, when anyone who shoots will notice, she doesn't know how to hold properly. I seriously think she bruised her shoulder, judging from how the barrel kicked back and up after the muzzle-flash. It's the little things in life that make me happy.

Holiday week coming up...I'm sure there will be a Bond marathon on Spike or some other channel...Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die, Thunderball, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger...I could watch those ones over and over.

I'm not a big Bond movie fan. But, I do love some of the opening scenes.

When Bond chases down a plunging Cessna through the freakin' air? Hell yeah!

The John Birch Society to attend CPAC 2011 as affiliate

“Last year’s appearance went so well that we are very happy to return,” said Bill Hahn, Public Relations Manager for JBS. “The attendees couldn’t have been nicer and it will be great to make further connections with those interested in learning more about Constitutional solutions for the problems affecting this nation.”

Over the last couple of years, JBS has seen a real thirst in the electorate for solutions to overbearing and unconstitutional government. JBS has responded with a number of activist and educational tools, many of which will be displayed and given out at the JBS CPAC booth # 310 and 312. Most prominently will be tools for choosing freedom and stopping ObamaCare, including information on nullification, repealing and defunding the unconstitutional new health care law.

re: #303 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

Two elderly women were driving around town in a large car. Neither could barely see over the dashboard. As they were cruising along, they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red, but they just went on through. The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself “I must be losing it. I could have sworn we just went through a red light.”

After a few more minutes, they came to another intersection and the light was red again. Again, they went right through. The woman in the passenger seat was almost sure that the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it. She was getting nervous.

At the next intersection, sure enough, the light was red and they went on through. So, she turned to the other woman and said, “Mildred, do you know that we just ran through three red lights in a row? You could have killed us both!”

Mildred turned to her and said, “Oh shit—am I driving?”

Another 'Nontroversy Eruption' on Facebook: Soros videos being posted. I question this person:

Me 'So Soros is a leftist giving money to leftist causes.... what's the big deal? It sounds like another 'Jewish Banker' conspiracy stirred up by Beck.'

Him 'You don't see the connections? Follow the links....'
(he posts links noting OSI funded entities)

Me 'I followed the links. Half those entities funded by Soros are leftist/liberal causes. So what. What is your point?'

Him 'You don't see all the connections? Soros is everywhere and it's not good for us. He's connected to O...'

Me 'Of course he's connected to O because he's a Democrat. But you haven't told me why this is so evil or sinister. What is the big deal? You leave a lot of innuendo and sentences leading off with many periods....'

Him 'I can't tell you any more, the information is all there....'

Me 'Yes, the information that we all know is there but it seems our interpretation is different, but you won't tell me what your interpretation is but keep implying something.... but I don't know what it is... but it sounds sinister...'

Him 'Sorry X, I guess you are just one of the Sheeple that just don't get it..'

Me 'I find it ironic you call me a Sheeple when Beck starts up the Soros Boogeyman schtick a few days ago and now a bunch of Soros related posts are all over Facebook. But I still don't know what is so evil about Soros when there's a bunch of conservative benefactors for every Soros. So what is the big deal?'

Him (more links) "I'm putting the information together but you just won't make the links. If you choose to ignore the links I can't help you."

Me "I see the links, I've known about them for years. What do all these links mean? Please explain or I'm left to interpret your innuendo and implication, which is that Soros is a Jewish banker liberal and he's really bad, evil. Sounds sinister..."

Him "No, my point is he is tied Very Close to O and the Dem party and the direction they want to push this country.."

Me "Of course he's tied close to O, O is a Democrat. Of course O has been more centrist and Soros is probably not happy, but hey, what's the conspiracy? Democrats push the county left, conservatives push it right. But I don't get the boogeyman schtick."

Him.... no comment...
