Obama Pushes for Showdown on START Treaty

Politics • Views: 21,727

President Obama is going to tackle the Republican effort to scuttle the START treaty head on: Obama Turns New Start Treaty Into Showdown With GOP.

He is pushing for a vote on a signature issue despite long odds, daring Republicans to block an arms-control treaty at the risk of disrupting relations with Russia and the international coalition that opposes Iran’s nuclear program. If he succeeds, Mr. Obama will demonstrate strength following the midterm election debacle. If he fails, he will reinforce the perception at home and abroad that he is a weakened president.

“It’s really high stakes,” said Geoffrey Kemp, a former national security aide to President Ronald Reagan and a scholar at the Nixon Center, a research group in Washington. “I would say it’s the biggest gamble he’s taken so far, certainly on foreign policy.”

Gary Samore, the top White House arms-control official, said Thursday he feared that putting off the treaty until next year would mean it “could be delayed indefinitely.” As a result, the United States and Russia would not resume nuclear inspections that lapsed last year, which he said would fuel distrust and lead to “a greater likelihood you could get into an arms race.”

Yeah, keeping track of that stuff is for week wusses.

Putin is a KGB, bear wrestlin’, dictator. Why wouldn’t we want him to have less nukes?

GOP opposition to START is ridiculous.
Are they aware that there are no inspectors in Russia?
That there hasn’t been in almost a year?
Besides, 1550 nukes is plenty to wipe out all life on the planet.
Give me a break, GOP.

This treaty is absolutely essential. It is about much more than some nonsense about who is perceived as potent in DC.

If we want to stop wasting billions on maintaining a useless cold war stock pile and allow the Russians to do the same - to the benefit of both nations, we need the treaty. If we want to prevent the rise of the Russian far right and risk re-igniting the Cold War, we need the treaty. If we want diplomatic partners to pressure Iran, we need the treaty. If we want to tell the Iranians they can’t have nukes in the first place we need to be seen as working with the Russians to reduce our stockpile.

It is the grossest insanity to play games with it. It is insane to frame it as anything else.

Shabbos comes. Be well.

Mr. Samore described the impact in more dire terms. “If we fail to act,” he said, “I think it will damage the U.S. reputation as a country that’s willing to lead.”

Money quote right there. The Know-Nothing Party (masquerading as the Republican Party) would rather America have its reputation damaged globally than to, you know, lead the world with resolve towards nuclear disarmament, just to score cheap political points.

poorly constructed sentence, but if you read it again, that’s not what it says.

I’m not sure it’s exactly a “gamble” on Obama’s part. It helps to be able to sit down at the table with half a dozen Republican secretaries of defense and state and have them all say “this treaty needs to be ratified.” Excellent opticals there. If the Republicans succeed in trashing the thing, they really come off looking like morons. I don’t think that’s just a liberal perspective, either. Their opposition doesn’t have a whole lot of positive traction or symbolic meaning, and Obama’s advocacy looks very sane.

Obviously I’m on his side, but even from the other side I don’t see Kyl coming off as the new Republican tough guy.

“High stakes”? If the Repubs block this, he’ll have something major to hit them on. Of course, knowing the Dems…

This is exactly what I expected the GOP to do.
Oppose every damn thing Obama is for, even if it hurts our national security.
That’s right, GOP.
You are hurting our national security by opposing START.

If republicans kill this then it proves what we already know, they’re not serious people concerned about anything more than the next election/news cycle.

Agreed. I would be surprised if they rise to the occasion and do the right thing.

That’s the sad part, it’s surprising when they do the right thing.

Putin does not oppose Iran’s (allegedly) peaceful nuclear program, while opposing a nuclear weapons program. That said, Russia is mentioned separately from the “international coalition”.

Hey, Steve -

Republicans - Having enough nuke-u-lar weapons to destroy the entire planet 20 times isn’t enough. We need to be able to destroy it 100 times!! National Security!!!!!!

19 SpaceJesus  Fri, Nov 19, 2010 3:06:34pm

yes, let’s jeopardize the security of our nation and the world because we’re a bunch of baby boomers engaged in a political pissing contest

20 the yankee  Fri, Nov 19, 2010 3:14:07pm

Don’t we only need to detonate about 300 nukes at the same time to kill most major life forms on earth.

I Never got the sense of why we made so many or why so many of them had to be intercontinental. If there was 100s of nukes coming over from Russia one minus well just detonate a few hundred in America the combine aftermath would destroy the earth.

21 Spocomptonite  Fri, Nov 19, 2010 3:17:56pm

Of all the things to pick a fight with the opposing party over, Republicans choose NPR (an issue that is nothing) and START (an issue that is EVERYTHING)? What’s next?

Oh, I see — then the author is either illiterate or deceptive.
