American Family Association Spokesman Fischer: God Digs ‘Massive Casualties’

Wingnuts • Views: 25,693

The American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer almost seems like a parody of an insane right wing fundamentalist, but he’s all too real — and he’s influential enough to share the stage with all the top GOP politicians at the last Values Voter Summit.

In Fischer’s latest unbelievably hateful post at the AFA site, he attempts to defend a previous post decrying the “feminization of the Medal of Honor,” by explaining that the US should start honoring soldiers who “inflict massive casualties” because God likes massive casualties.

Christianity is not a religion of pacifism. Remember that John the Baptist did not tell the soldiers who came to him to lay down their arms, even when they asked him directly, “what shall we do?” (Luke 3:14).

War is certainly a terrible thing, and should only be waged for the highest and most just of causes. But if the cause is just, then there is great honor in achieving military success, success which should be celebrated and rewarded.

The bottom line here is that the God of the Bible clearly honors those who show valor and gallantry in waging aggressive war in a just cause against the enemies of freedom, even while inflicting massive casualties in the process. What I’m saying is that it’s time we started imitating God’s example again.

What a prick.

Also, replace a few words and it's almost indistinguishable from what Bin Laden says...

The other part is noting that he is glorifying/promoting a violent Christianity that relishes in the thought of mercilessly beating down a group of people, no matter the body count in gods name. In his article, Fischer refers to an article by Bill McGurn of the Wall Street Journal. He claims McGurn said none of the Medals of Honor awarded in the current wars "were granted to soldiers who showed unusual bravery and courage in assertive military action against the enemy." Maybe Fischer can extrapolate that from McGurn's article, but what McGurn focused on was that all (or all but one, I'm not sure) the medals went to soldiers who saved their fellow soldiers or commanders at great risk to themselves, and in acts of bravery that cannot be commanded. In other words, they did things that no one could order them to do. If I were McGurn, I'd (verbally) smack Fischer for using his name in his article.

I believe Fischer has not served in the military, and I believe from reading this article, he has no idea how soldiers feel about their fellow soldiers.

Don't most Medal of Honor recipients receive it because they saved a brother's life in combat? I'm sure it's not the only reason to receive it, but does God value killing more than saving the lives of His Supposed People?

If I were McGurn, I'd (verbally) smack Fischer for using his name in his article.

Fischer also misses the larger point in McGurn's article-- that the MoH is more for the country than it is for the soldier, and that now that we've got an all-volunteer army over one where folks are drafted to serve, the importance of ceremonies like these might have been a bit lost in these days:

Whatever the reason, it's unrealistic to expect any nation, even a wartime America, to spend every hour commemorating those who defend us. Which is precisely why we have the Medal of Honor, and the public ceremonies attached to it. For a brief, national moment, a warrior is held up to the American people as an example to his fellows—and the embodiment of our highest ideals.

Today at the White House, Barack Obama and Salvatore Giunta will give us such a moment. Let's hope we're not too busy to notice.

It's not about the body count. It's about honoring an ideal, which Fischer has clearly missed in his Old Testament-fueled bloodlust.

I’m not saying that our soldiers have become feminized in the least, especially those who have earned the Medal of Honor. It’s not our soldiers who have become feminized, it is the awards process that has become feminized.

What I am saying is that I am observing a trend in which we single out bravery in self-defense and yet seem hesitant to single out bravery in launching aggressive attacks that result in the deaths of enemy soldiers.

So, he's saying that it's a girly thing to give the MOH to those who protect their fellow soldiers in combat and a manly thing to give the MOH to those who killed a shit load of enemies.

Fischer needs to read more about a subject before writing.

Early in the 20th century, the Navy awarded many Medals of Honor for peacetime bravery. For instance, seven sailors aboard the USS Iowa (BB-4) received the medal when a boiler exploded on January 25, 1904. Aboard the USS Chicago (CA-14) in 1901, John Henry Helms received the medal for saving the ship's cook from drowning. Even after World War I, Richard Byrd and Floyd Bennett received the medal for exploration of the North Pole.[23] Thomas J. Ryan received it for saving a woman from the burning Grand Hotel in Yokohama, Japan following the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake.

AGERHOLM, HAROLD CHRIST

Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Born: 29 January 1925, Racine, Wis. Accredited to: Wisconsin. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 4th Battalion, 10th Marines, 2d Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Islands, 7 July 1944. When the enemy launched a fierce, determined counterattack against our positions and overran a neighboring artillery battalion, Pfc. Agerholm immediately volunteered to assist in the efforts to check the hostile attack and evacuate our wounded. Locating and appropriating an abandoned ambulance jeep, he repeatedly made extremely perilous trips under heavy rifle and mortar fire and single-handedly loaded and evacuated approximately 45 casualties, working tirelessly and with utter disregard for his own safety during a grueling period of more than 3 hours. Despite intense, persistent enemy fire, he ran out to aid 2 men whom he believed to be wounded marines but was himself mortally wounded by a Japanese sniper while carrying out his hazardous mission. Pfc. Agerholm's brilliant initiative, great personal valor and self-sacrificing efforts in the face of almost certain death reflect the highest credit upon himself and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

I'll cut this out, since I could probably do it all day. Check out the citations, though, there are some remarkable stories there.

ANTRIM, RICHARD NOTT

Rank and organization: Commander, U.S. Navy. Place and date: Makassar, Celebes, Netherlands East Indies, April 1942. Entered service at: Indiana. Born: 17 December 1907, Peru, Ind. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while interned as a prisoner of war of the enemy Japanese in the city of Makassar, Celebes, Netherlands East Indies, in April 1942. Acting instantly on behalf of a naval officer who was subjected to a vicious clubbing by a frenzied Japanese guard venting his insane wrath upon the helpless prisoner, Comdr. (then Lt.) Antrim boldly intervened, attempting to quiet the guard and finally persuading him to discuss the charges against the officer. With the entire Japanese force assembled and making extraordinary preparations for the threatened beating, and with the tension heightened by 2,700 Allied prisoners rapidly closing in, Comdr. Antrim courageously appealed to the fanatic enemy, risking his own life in a desperate effort to mitigate the punishment. When the other had been beaten unconscious by 15 blows of a hawser and was repeatedly kicked by 3 soldiers to a point beyond which he could not survive, Comdr. Antrim gallantly stepped forward and indicated to the perplexed guards that he would take the remainder of the punishment, throwing the Japanese completely off balance in their amazement and eliciting a roar of acclaim from the suddenly inspired Allied prisoners. By his fearless leadership and valiant concern for the welfare of another, he not only saved the life of a fellow officer and stunned the Japanese into sparing his own life but also brought about a new respect for American officers and men and a great improvement in camp living conditions. His heroic conduct throughout reflects the highest credit upon Comdr. Antrim and the U.S. Naval Service.

According to Fischer's standard, Salvatore Giunta's Medal Of Honor is worth less than the 20 medals awarded to the troops who massacred Indian women and children at Wounded Knee.

...this was the only "massacre" in the history of the United States of America where the Congressional Medal of Honor (20) was awarded...

Ah...

Nearly 500,000 Purple Heart medals were manufactured in anticipation of the casualties resulting from the invasion of Japan. To the present date, all the American military casualties of the sixty years following the end of World War II—including the Korean and Vietnam Wars—have not exceeded that number. In 2003, there were still 120,000 of these Purple Heart medals in stock.[50] There are so many in surplus that combat units in Iraq and Afghanistan are able to keep Purple Hearts on-hand for immediate award to wounded soldiers on the field.[50]

Note also that for decades after the war, there was a deep-seated hatred for "the Japs" by both veterans and civilians, that wasn't felt to the same degree for Germans. It's likely that a lot of the reason for that was because the Japanese went out of their way to be brutal and sadistic towards their POWs as a matter of routine. Cue this week’s literary smackdown. In one corner is Fox Nation, a news and opinion Web site run by Fox News, which on Monday ran this headline about Obama’s new book: “Obama Praises Indian Chief Who Killed U.S. General.” (The site has since defanged the headline, “for historical accuracy” as an editor’s note puts it, to “Obama Praises Indian Chief Who Defeated U.S. General,” but the hyperlink remains: “[Link: nation.foxnews.com...] Potential responses upon reading this headline: Outrageous! Unpatriotic! Anti-military (that profits-for-military-families thing aside)! Just another example of Obama’s America-last worldview! But what’s really going on here? The short Fox Nation post quotes a story from USA Today that noted among the characters that Obama features, “his most controversial choice may be Sitting Bull, who defeated Custer at Little Bighorn….” (Defeated Custer’s army, that is, rather than killed Custer himself—hence the Fox Nation correction. And even the new headline is a stretch, since the military victory is credited to Crazy Horse and Gall, rather than to Sitting Bull.)

Hi, everyone. I'll just repeat what I just posted in ice's page about this:

These guys are insincere demagogic chicken hawks grasping at some to way to use Christianity to obtain worldly influence. They're hoping to incite other, more sincere Christians to do the dirty work. Then they can sit back in the safety of their plush offices and reap the material rewards, all without risking so much as a stubbed toe.

Judging by the responses to the AFA blog post, they've badly miscalculated (but their rhetoric is dangerous nonetheless).

Gary Brooks Faulkner was honest, if a bit eccentric. I guarantee you you'll never find people like Mr. Fischer & Co. roughing their way through the Hindu Kush Mountains intent on personally delivering righteous retribution.

Pretty good summary by Ian Crouch:

That was it: A headline, which was later changed, in which Fox Nation made a relatively true statement that, without context, communicated a generally false overall message. Misleading is probably the right word, since Obama has clearly not written a book for kids about American military embarrassments.

How about Force Crush?

Possibly the most violent Force ability known to the Sith and the Jedi, this deadly technique lifted the opponent into the air and, as they were floating, their body would implode as it was crushed by the Force.

Deadly Sight?

Darksiders could inflict pain and injury upon their foes merely by looking at them, causing victim's body to burn and smoke as they died. The user of Deadly Sight could damage entire groups of foes within their field of vision.

When I was still in grade school we took a field trip to a pioneer museum that had real scalps on display. Our teacher was explaining (about a blond woman's scalp) that all they had done was homestead, and they were massacred for no reason. And they were good Christians, to boot.

And I still remember looking at that scalp, and wondering why the Indians would not have killed people taking over their land. So, when we were all gawking at scalps, like little kids would, I turned around and told the teacher I didn't blame the Indians. If I had been and Indian, that's probably what I would have done. I said I felt sorry for the Indians.

I got called aside for that one. And I think the teacher may have had concerns I found the scalps intriguing. She practically had to peel me off the observation glass. (Then again, I was already a big fan of scary movies by then, so seeing a real scalp seemed cool.)

It was probably a year or so after that I got kicked out of Sunday school because I told them it was all bullshit. And I said "bullshit," not "stupid." They didn't like that, either.

One wonder why they didn't change it to "Obama Praises Indian Native American Chief Who Defeated U.S. General". I guess that would be too accurate prejudicial.

It would seem he is a "jealous" researcher with his own treasured interpretation. From what I've read of JBS and from JBS, it is formally not a racist org (i.e. without formal statements denigrating blacks, etc.), which, nevertheless, attracts racists and has produced numerous racist/Nazi stars (some of whom would go on to condemn it as not radical enough). Kind of like an old-time Tea Party. So ernie seems hung up on the formal allegedly non-racist aspect of the org, while ignoring real life implications.

Yeah, that's just silly. Sitting Bull was a great man. If honoring Indian leaders is considered un-American, we really have lost it.

Considering how non-Native American Americans (and others) have almost continuously fucked Native Americans over since shortly after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock up until most recently (and even that has a huge qualifier), we as a nation owe Native Americans more apologies than we could ever give.

I have heard of a cat bathing technique that goes roughly as follows:

1. pour cat shampoo into (clean) toilet bowl
2. insert cat into toilet bowl and close lid
3. allow 5 minutes for self-agitation
4. flush repeatedly
5. open lid

Never tried it, myself.

A civilian, last name Fisher unfortunately I forget the first name, pulled the same trick at another Japanese POW camp. This Fisher grew up in South Africa and as a youth befriended a couple of Japanese diplomats at a cafe in Pretoria. The wait-staff was refusing to serve them because they were kaffirs (in South Africa, this is a slur for blacks) but he boldly proclaimed that the two were with him and his guests and should be served.

This led eventually to an invitation to study Japanese in Japan, which he did. Years later in Malaysia, Fisher lead a guerilla group but unsuccessfully. He was slated for beheading on the spot when he astonished the sword-wielding soldier with the suggestion, in perfect court Japanese, that the gentlemen might be so good as to wait an honorable moment.

A talking horse would have been less of a wonder and the strange animal had to be brought before the CO. And so Fisher lived.

At the POW camp, a particularly sadistic guard was working himself up to a killing rage, beating one prisoner after another, as they were lined up for their quota of clubbing. Fisher took his beating stoically, then turned around and asked, [again in perfect Japanese] Please sir, I must apologize because my conduct has merited more of a beating. Would you please beat me again?

The guard was dumbstruck. Off guard and at a loss, he recognized shortly that he was losing face. And stormed off.

Without killing anyone.

Although he had participated in a resistance movement, he was not officially a soldier. He was, though, knighted for his conduct.

From your link:

* Perhaps some common-sense, healthy "discrimination" is in order: the TSA should put conditions on employment for self-acknowledged homosexuals -- that they not be assigned to pat down travelers so as to avoid being put in sexually compromising situations;

* It would not be workable to assign, say, gay male TSA agents to pat down female travelers -- as the latter -- thinking the agents to be normal men -- would protest that they are being patted down by males. Chaos would ensue;

* Does the TSA know which of its employees are homosexual, anyway, and how? If not, is it fair to travelers who may end up getting "groped" by homosexual TSA agents who are secretly getting turned on through the process?

* Could the TSA be subjected to a sexual harassment lawsuit if the agent who engages in an overly aggressive "same-gender pat-down" -- and gets sued -- turns out to be homosexual?

We'll need an army of eunuchs to staff the TSA, I guess. Verifiable eunuchs.

A kind-of interesting, post-midterm, Brookings/PRRI religious values poll:
[Link: www.publicreligion.org...]

Some excerpts:

Overall, Americans are nearly evenly divided over whether the values of Islam
are compatible with American values.
Approximately two‐thirds of Republicans
(67%) and those identifying with the Tea Party movement (66%) say the values
of Islam are at odds with American values. Less than one‐third of Democrats
(30%) agree, and only about 4‐in‐10 (43%) Independents agree.
A majority (58%) of Americans believe God has granted America a special role
in human history.
Members of the Tea Party (76%) and Republicans (75%) are
much more likely to believe that God has a granted the U.S. a special role in
human history than independents (54%) or Democrats (49%).

– Americans who believe God has granted America a special role in history are
significantly more likely to say military strength rather than diplomacy is the
best way to ensure peace, and to say torture can be justified.
The survey also found significant divides over attitudes toward discrimination,
particularly over the question of whether whites currently face significant
discrimination.
Forty‐four percent of Americans believe that today discrimination
against whites has become as big a problem as discrimination against blacks and
other minorities.

– A majority of those identifying with the Tea Party (61%) and Republicans
(56%) say that discrimination against whites is as big a problem as
discrimination against blacks and other minorities, a view shared by only 28%
of Democrats and 49% of independents.

– White evangelicals are the only religious group in which a majority (57%)
agree that discrimination against whites has become as big a problem as
discrimination against minorities.

One thing that has escaped some people is that, up until shortly after 9/11, airport security was already privatized. Wackenhut had the security concession at BNA (and other airports) until the TSA came into being and took over, presumably to standardize things and to have the ability to do things in the name of security that private companies couldn't do without getting their asses sued.

Hmm... It would appear that Palin is not nearly as Shakespearean as she would have us believe...

An excellent example of all of this is the word refudiate, which was brought to prominence this year through its use by Sarah Palin, first in speech as a television commentator, and then in text as a twitter post. Palin was certainly not the first person to use this word – in fact, it has come up in enough other places over the past hundred and twenty years that it seems fair to ask why refudiate isn’t in the dictionary already.

This word dates back at least to June 14th 1891, when it appeared in a story in the Fort Worth Gazette, a Texas newspaper: “…it is the first declaration of how the party stands, and in great measure a refudiation of the charges of dickering…”

As Ben Zimmer pointed out, the word comes up again in 1925, this time in a newspaper headline in the Atlanta Constitution, on June 21st: “Scandal Taint Refudiated In Teapot Case by Court, Fall Says in Statement.”

This word dates back at least to June 14th 1891, when it appeared in a story in the Fort Worth Gazette, a Texas newspaper: “…it is the first declaration of how the party stands, and in great measure a refudiation of the charges of dickering…”

Aha, it's Texistani. That explains it.

Very good point.

Last time I rented a house, the owner violated just about every state law on the books regarding rental properties and made us pretty much homeless on a whim. We were naive, stupid, and ignorant at the time, so we just bent over and took it. Years later, a lawyer friend informed us of the civil liabilities (read: cash) that we would almost certainly have been able to recover in court, and we cried and cried and cried.

China is a rising economic power. It is not in the national interest of the U.S. that China fail economically. Quite the contrary. The world needs all the engineering capacity and productive abilities it can muster. China does present challenges, and China does produce greenhouse gases, but that's far from the whole of the story. Right now, China contributes mightily to world prosperity, and of course her own. In time, and the time is now not far off, China will move into first place economically as measured by purchasing power parity. And before too long, and before it's too late we may hope, China will be cranking out ever so cool high tech wind, solar, and nuclear goodies, alongside the western powers' efforts along these lines.

re: #237 lostlakehiker

Obliquely on that note, my favorite RINO David Frum had a few words of advice for Republicans (which of course will go ignored)

Post-Tea-Party Nation

Lesson 1: The danger of closed information systems. Well before the crash of 2008, the U.S. economy was sending ominous warning signals. Median incomes were stagnating. Home prices rose beyond their rental values. Consumer indebtedness was soaring. Instead, conservatives preferred to focus on positive signals — job numbers, for example — to describe the Bush economy as “the greatest story never told.”

Too often, conservatives dupe themselves. They wrap themselves in closed information systems based upon pretend information. In this closed information system, banks can collapse without injuring the rest of the economy, tax cuts always pay for themselves and Congressional earmarks cause the federal budget deficit. Even the market collapse has not shaken some conservatives out of their closed information system. It enfolded them more closely within it. This is how to understand the Glenn Beck phenomenon. Every day, Beck offers alternative knowledge — an alternative history of the United States and the world, an alternative system of economics, an alternative reality. As corporate profits soar, the closed information system insists that the free-enterprise system is under assault. As prices slump, we are warned of imminent hyperinflation. As black Americans are crushed under Depression-level unemployment, the administration’s policies are condemned by some conservatives as an outburst of Kenyan racial revenge against the white overlord.

Meanwhile, Republican officeholders who want to explain why they acted to prevent the collapse of the U.S. banking system can get no hearing from voters seized with certainty that a bank collapse would have done no harm to ordinary people. Support for TARP has become a career-ender for Republican incumbents, and we shall see what it does to Mitt Romney, the one national Republican figure who still defends TARP.

The same vulnerability to closed information systems exists on the liberal side of U.S. politics as well, of course. But the fact that my neighbor is blind in one eye is no excuse for blinding myself in both.

Read it all (or don't, see if I care)

Thats a very positive spin to take on a country that has been actively seeking (and testing) ways to cripple our infrastructure. Their monetary policy seems designed to cripple our economy.

China doesn't act like a trading partner. China acts like an adversary. If we had any brains at all as a country, we would have put tariffs in place long ago.

You're lucky if you get more than one season out of Wal Mart Christmas lights. I've been replacing all mine with LED strings from the hardware store. They cost more, but use less energy and last for years. (And they cost a lot less than they did five years ago).

Every day, I receive Occam's Junk-Mail.

It occurs to me that people looking to cut federal expenditures might look into outlawing the practice of sending advertisements through the USPS. I have no data to back this up, but I suspect that would substantially reduce the workload. Think of all the fuel and man-hours that could be saved if the post office was no longer expected to deliver Arby's coupons to 150 million addresses.

Ban bullshit mail, and reduce delivery to 3 days per week. Maybe even one day per week.

Yeah, I know. Some lizard is about to point out that the USPS only costs like $37.50 or something. I'm well accustomed to all my ideas being shown to to be dysfunctional and useless.

Considering how non-Native American Americans (and others) have almost continuously fucked Native Americans over since shortly after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock up until most recently (and even that has a huge qualifier), we as a nation owe Native Americans more apologies than we could ever give.

It's a sad and horrifying history how we Europeans mistreated Native Americans.

My cat willingly climbs in the shower with me and just sits there under showerhead. It is both amusing, and kind of annoying because i have to towel him off every time or he leaves puddles everywhere after the shower.

Some cats like water. They're a bit rare, though.

It is shameful how Christianity has been co-opted into a neocon vision of the world. Apparently, Fischer has never read the passages that say "turn the other cheek" or "those who live by the sword, die by the sword." Words from Jesus himself.
Besides, being a member of the American Family Association, is he not against the broken families created by massive casualties? Would he not be opposed to the moral degradation caused by the glorification of killing and pain? It seems like Fischer is in the wrong position. Rather than being the head of AFA, maybe he should get himself a mechanized puppet and name himself Sudoku or Crossword or some other kind of puzzle in order to express his sadistic nature.
