Any of the wristwatch-style GPS units should be good for that. If you have an iPhone there are some apps designed for hiking that use the built-in GPS, I believe.

I'll look into the wristwatch types, that way to carry and view it would be good. Some of these outdoor sporting GPS units have the EPIRB function which would make D_L feel much better about my photo backpacking plans. Costly but cheap insurance. Cell phones really are useless in all the good places.

Speaking of maps... I have another Ipod Touch (and Iphone) app to recommend... I downloaded it today... just 3.99... called Paris 3d.

It's basically like Google Earth, using the same source maps that Google uses, but built into a self-contained 1/2 gig app, and with an interface that works and looks good on the Iphone size screen.

You don't need a phone of wifi connection, since the whole database is included with the app, so you can use the app "offline" although if you are running it on a Iphone, it will interact with the GPS part of the phone and display the current position you are at on the maps.

Either way, stand-alone or GPS enabled, or even if you have no need for a interactive map of Paris, it is a wonderful tool to explore Paris even from a distance... like in the comfort of your home.

Recommended.

I'm working on a Iphone/Ipod Touch app that will keep track of where and how a TSA employee has touched you... if the parameters set in the app reaches a critical level... the app immediately emails a complaint to the TSA, and contacts your lawyer. The app also plays, in the background, Frank Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me."

It's Called the "Touching Security Alert"

But this is not as good as a speaker manufacturer that gets into distributed audio systems, designed by engineers with no field experience, supported by young-uns on tech support who act like I'm supposed to know all these little nuances and tricks to get the system running.

Now on my third programming setup for a system that should have taken me an hour to get running. In the mean time the client thinks I'm an idiot.

SPACE TIME CLOAK.

The scientists have conceived of a "spacetime cloak" which manipulates light and, in essence, conceals whole events from a viewer.
The theory is based on censoring the flow of events, which we perceive as a stream of light particles, also called photons, that strike the retina.
By exploiting a characteristic of fibre optics, the flow of photons can be slowed, events edited out and stitched back together, say the team from Imperial College London and Salford University, northwestern England.
"A safecracker would be able, for a brief time, to enter a scene, open the safe, remove its contents, close the door and exit the scene, whilst the record of a surveillance camera apparently showed that the safe door was closed all the time," according to their paper.

Iowa's King is hot on the evil scourge of anchor-terror-babies:

Steve King: "Birthright Citizenship" Bill Could be Soon

Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King said in an interview with CBS News today that he is "looking at dropping a bill early in the 112th Congress" to end the practice of giving U.S. citizenship to U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants.

King, who will likely head the immigration subcommittee when the new Congress begins work in January, predicted that hearings on the bill would not be immediate, since there are "other priorities" to be dealt with. He said he expected hearings "in the next couple months" after the legislation is introduced.

Iowa's King is hot on the evil scourge of anchor-terror-babies:

Steve King: "Birthright Citizenship" Bill Could be Soon

Good grief - Steve King to head the Immigration subcommittee?

From there:

King said he believes a law to change the policy should be passed without worrying about potential legal challenges. If the law is ultimately struck down in the courts, King said, he would push for a Constitutional Amendment to address the issue, though he acknowledged "it would be difficult" to get an amendment passed.

If a law ending birthright citizenship passes the House, it would still need to get through the Democrat-led Senate and then be signed into law by President Obama to take effect - an unlikely proposition. King said he views his effort as just one step in a process, comparing his work on birthright citizenship to the six years he spent working to make English Iowa's official language, which took place in 2002.

"I have a perspective about the degree of difficulty, but I think you have to do the right thing," he said.

He got that wrong. He has no idea how difficult it would be, and he is absolutely mistaken when it comes to what doing the "right thing" is.

SPACE TIME CLOAK.

what in the fuck

OK this is a fabulous example of the media not being able to report anything scientific to save its life. Everything has to be made breathless. Everything has to have science fiction terms to make it seem like Star Trek is here.
Everything has to be oversimplified and the wrong parts of it emphasized so that it is basically wrong.

Here is the deal.

Light moves at its fastest in a vacuum. That 3.0 X 10^8 m/s you memorized is the speed of light in a vacuum. If light goes through a dialectic medium, like glass or water, its speed in the medium is slower than its speed in the vacuum.

It turns out, through Fermat's principle of least time and some handy calculus of variations, this slowing down of light is the reason that light bends when it goes through the interface of one medium to another. In other words, this is how a glass lens can focus light. This is what it is about the glass that makes that happen.

Now the point of the article is, suppose you had a transparent medium with a very large index of refraction. A huge index of refraction, and that light went through it very, very slowly. If you made a window out of it, and put it up to a camera - and distracted the people watching the camera long enough so that they did not notice that their screen went blank waiting for the light to go through, then once the light from a room started coming through, events in the room would play out from the past. If it takes say ten minutes for the light to go through, the image of the room would be from ten minutes ago.

That is the idea.

Traveling in January?

For a month-long vacation Japan is great, but January is not a good month for Japan, unless you like snow and want to go to Sapporo.

I went to Hong Kong once in January. A good month for HK, I think, as the air is somewhat clean and the Chinese NY is in that month.

It depends on what you like. Europe has a lot of history so there's always old buildings, castles, museums to see. Most people speak English. If you're looking for adventure India, China and Thailand are really fun but I wouldn't suggest them for first time travellers. I've never been to New Zealand but my mom goes occasionally and she loves the wildlife and hiking trails.

That's the thing, I've never been out of the states, (the Southeastern part, for that matter, isn't that sad? :P) and I'm really just looking for something that will yield the biggest culture shocks, new experiences, different tastes, and the minimization of feeling super 'touristy'. Light goes more slowly through a medium, like air or glass or water. Index of refraction is a measure of this.

If you are looking through something relatively thick with an insanely large index of refraction, it could conceivably take light a relatively long time to go through that medium. Energy is conserved. The light will go out the other side and move at normal speed. However, in the medium, it slows down.

It's a bit late for Hanami (cherry tree watching) in Japan, and the rainy season can start in June... Still, for a long vacation Japan is a good place for Westerners, as English is available and you've got plenty of amenities, and transportation is safe and abundant, so you can wander around by yourself without getting into trouble.

I'd suggest Europe. Lots to see and do. Get a month long Eurorail pass and when you get bored with a place just hop on a train and wake up in another country. Lots of fun.
India might be a bit of a shock for you if you haven't traveled. Same with most of Asia and Africa. A lot of people just find it overwhelming.

re: #85 b_sharp

The media should not be allowed anywhere near science.

I used to get annoyed by things like this too, but I'm okay with it now. Reporting on obscure and arcane things like science or little-known hobbies is very difficult - you have to capture audience attention, or your writing is essentially worthless. Writing something that appeals to those in the know, or those who are already fans, is very different from writing something that has broad appeal, and both require great and different skills.

People in general are not interested in minutiae, whether it's science or stamp collecting. Your writing has to convey the essence of what makes this arcane subject interesting, while still being simplistic and/or sensational enough that it doesn't alienate your reader. As long as reporters don't deliberately distort, or make huge errors, I'm happy to accept some sensationalism, and even some small errors. Yes, sensationalism can make it difficult for scientists suddenly under pressure to make what they're doing sexy as well, but in general, publicity is better than no publicity.

re: #111 Killgore Trout

Granted. The Japan trip may be a "far future" thing for us, as we tend to be on a pretty tight budget regarding travel. In that regard, I will say that Europe is a great "starter vacation" because expenses tend to be relatively less and you can experience so much in such a short amount of time there. I spent a bit less than two weeks in Ireland, and I felt almost overwhelmed a little bit by everything we took in.

They rarely have any strikes or work slow down events in the mid-winter. Once, in the last 6 times I've been there over the last 12 years, I got stuck on the tarmac at CDG, because the air traffic controllers at Orly pulled an unannounced work slowdown one day in Jan. And even that only delayed the flight to Frankfort for an hour or so.

Europe in the winter is always less crowed, cheaper and, in my opinion, more comfortable. Even eastern Europe in the mid-winter is nice, been there too... I think in the last 12 years, I've only been in Europe once in the summer... all the other times have been Jan. or Feb.

129 Charles Johnson  Mon, Nov 22, 2010 5:27:28pm

Speaking of Digg, are there people who like that style of commenting system? One of the reasons I'm posting LGF articles there is because I wanted to check out their redesigned interface, and so far I'm pretty underwhelmed. The comment system is a real hassle to navigate and use - the way it's designed, it's very difficult to find newly posted comments, especially if you have clicked the dislike button on one of the comments in a thread. They've made it so that a click on the thumbs down button means you not only don't see that comment, you don't see any comments posted in reply to it, forever, and if you should want to see what's going on in one of those subthreads you have to drill down through layers upon layers of hidden/buried comments.

I think comment threading can work, and Ajax can really help, but the Digg approach seems to be trying to force their users into a certain rigidly defined way of thinking about the discussion. Maybe it's just me, but it feels pretty unpleasant.

On really big sites, you need the threading to make any sense of the comments, but they broke Digg completely with the 4.0 release and never bothered to fix it.

This style of comments is much better than threaded for the comment volume LGF gets.

OK my post there. I am always up to piss off the stalkers:

It is always refreshing to see our stalkers appear in a vain attempt to smear more of the inter webs with their troll droppings. Unfortunately, these sick and deluded people regularly threaten posters on LGF with violence on their stalker sites.

To those who are not familiar with LGF, some time ago, our site purged a large number of deluded, vile, hate filled, genocide preaching (no seriously, ask them about Muslims some time) homophobic, anti-science racist right wing fanatics. These are the sort of people who not only like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, but think that they are clever, if a little less hard line than they would like. However, these are not the typical wingnut teabagger. These are very deluded people who are utterly obsessed with some form of "vengeance" against LGF and posters there.

Chenzen is one of the leaders of a blog dedicated to reading every single post made at LGF and looking to cast it in the worst possible light. Since this is the action of a deluded person, his complaints frequently show how much better LGF is without these people who were banned so very long ago. The vile rants of these people only confirm it as the cackle like howler monkeys.

Unfortunately, even after years of being banned for being utter pricks, they still follow any post made around the internet like deranged puppies.

Ask them why they were banned.

In general, there are three responses:

1: Claim that they were perfectly innocent voices of civility and they have no idea why they would be banned. These are usually the homophobic, anti-science, Muslim genocide ones, who really don't understand what they said that was wrong. They truly believe that "right thinking" people are just as vile and ignorant as they are.

2. Claim that they were not banned, they quit! In general, this was what we call a flounce. Flouncers would generally get progressively surly though posts at the number of liberals at the blog, how the blog supported things like evolution and the science of Climate Change (as in it is real, dangerous and happening now) and how the blog no longer bought the latest false outrage from Fox or other rightwing pundits. How dare we think that the birth certificate thing and death panels for example were a hoax. Others were just pissed that no, we really don't want to make war on everyone who is Muslim or do nasty things to them.

3. Claim that they never had sock puppets. A sock puppet is another account that is controlled by the same user. Many, like Iron Fist for example or DEZs or Chenzen or Snork would have multiple accounts in order to agree with themselves and make themselves seem more "right." They will tell you interesting stories about how they were have only one internet connection and the wife, kids, three cousins and two pet possums all posted at LGF.

In the end, if you are curious what LGF is like, come and take a look. You can take the words of very bitter ex posters who were banned for being nuts, or you can look at it for yourself. You will find a great number of educated people commenting on interesting topics from a very centrist point of view. We do have some very die hard liberals. We also have some conservatives in the older sense of the word that had something to do with fiscal responsibility and a vigorous foreign policy - not the deluded sorts who think mama grizzly is smart. In fact, many of the topics are discussed are about how the GOP has gone mad in recent years - something lamented by both "sides of the aisle" at LGF.

re: #129 Charles

I am a giant fan of how we do things here now. It works very well, is obvious to navigate and easy to find who is talking to who. Please don't change it.

re: #144 LudwigVanQuixote

You are not kidding. I just posted this. Look at the quote from the Rodent.

Just so people see what our stalkers are like, because the post was dinged down, Hobohuntingmoron, AKA Rodan, AKA Trajan, AKA Twajie AKA Ricky wrote:

"so, Reggie, I see Chuck sent you here as well. Too little, too late. Oh, and I just posted something at LGF under one of my socks. Try to catch me, you pedophile."

Now think about this. Here is a grown man who calls those who do not share his delusions, and who he has never met, pedophiles.

Here he is bragging that somehow, he is still posting at LGF - even though he will tell you he hates the place worse than anything and obsesses over it day and night. In fact, his entire web existence seems to revolve around stalking LGF.

Think about the maturity of bragging about something like "I'm still posting under yet another, pseudonym! Catch me if you can, Nyah Nyah!"

It is pretty pathetic.

For the record, Charles does not out people. Hobohuntingmoron, AKA Rodan, AKA Trajan, AKA Twajie AKA Ricky threatens to out people as a way to intimidate them. He also threatens to come to people's homes and hurt them

Can you believe that?

Of course, in those days, there were a lot of odious morons around who slowly wore down my ability to stomach hateful stupidity. I found that reasoning didn't work with them. You simply can not reason with someone who rejects reason. You can't give facts to people who reject facts. You can't talk about being fair to people who are frightened and live in an imaginary grudge world.

I finally came to the conclusion that the only tactic with a real troll is to roast the fucker. Always have facts straight to back up the roasting, but don't even bother trying to get through. The only possible weapon is showing them that their views actually don't fly and that no, they will not be popular for being hateful, mean-spirited, backwards and dumb - let alone racist, ant-American, anti-science, teabag loving, neo-Nazi defending, Rush is "just satire" screaming douches.

If you assume an average of 4 socks, that gets you to about the maximum number of "individual" posters ever seen on the stalker sites.

Consider that Larry AKA Snork AKA My little Pony AKA Iapyx AKA Earth2moonbat is now up to 5 known alter personae and I have reason to suspect he's made two new ones, since I've been pointing these ones out. He is a sort of high end - though didn't Iron Fist have something like eight socks - and then figure that some of them will only still have one account,
4 seems about right - like Rodan AKA Trajan AKA Ricky AKA Hobo Hunter AKA twajie. I know that's 5 but Twajie is a nick name others who could not stand him before he came here gave him and it really pisses him off.

He is a sort of high end - though didn't Iron Fist have something like eight socks - and then figure that some of them will only still have one account,
4 seems about right - like Rodan AKA Trajan AKA [censored] AKA Hobo Hunter AKA twajie. I know that's 5 but Twajie is a nick name others who could not stand him before he came here gave him and it really pisses him off.

I still favor the my D&D inspired nickname for him: "Dorkus, Prince of Blogstalking."

It's really easy. the controls and buttons are pretty much the same as posting a comment. There's a preview button to help you out and if you fuck it up there's an edit feature (the little pencil icon). Go for it.

I just saw an ad for an upcoming show on the "History" Channel that promises to reveal how "aliens" gave Nazi Germany it's weapons and technology prowess. Really? I mean fucking really?

The lunatics are so tired of saying that the pyramids and Mayan temples and every other manmade artifact of "prehistoric" man was created or instigated by aliens that now they have to say that "Aliens" helped the Nazi's too?

What the fuckety fuck?!!!?

The sad part is that people will watch this show and then go about the next morning spouting the things that they are so careful to say as "could have" "might have" "possibly" on the show as utter and complete fact.

My God but people are collectively stupid, maybe just a little too stupid to survive for much longer at this point...but that is a whole 'nother' argument...sigh. :(

Until this Nazi angle developed, it was only the non-white peoples of the past who were alleged to have had alien assistance. Ever see a woo-woo allege that Notre Dame Cathedral or the Parthenon were built by aliens? Stonehenge is sometimes mentioned in connection with these alien masonry experts, but possibly because woofatarians don't realize the ancient Britons were white. Every other old-timer who was darker than a grocery sack and built anything better than a mud hut; Mohenjo-Daro, Mayan pyramids, Zimbabwe, Easter Island statues, the Nazca lines (you name it); is alleged to have been in league with space gomers.

OMFG!

///give me a break, nazi aliens? effing really? how stupid are these people?

They used to be, at least, interesting.

The only thing I really miss from when we cut off our satellite dish? Cartoon Network & Nickelodeon. More wit, humor & real storytelling in "Avatar: The Last Airbender" than in anything on ABC/NBC/CBS/FOX/etc combined.

We had a proper Irish wake for my mother. German catholic roots to her family, but we always hung out with the Irish for whatever reason. Two kegs and fresh bar-b-que with chickens that I slaughtered and dressed myself. Lots of good friends and lots of stories. It makes a terrible hard day bearable. It's only been a little more than a decade so it still aches.

So, what you're saying is that in terms of race relations, it's a positive thing that people are now speculating that the Nazis had aliens helping them?
/

Not exactly. The Nazi angle may be ok with the woo culture because it involves things that white people STILL cannot make for themselves, unlike ancient stone monuments which were allegedly beyond the capacity of only non-white folk.

Btw, in colonial times, there was a whole miniature pseudoscience built around the ruins of Great Zimbabwe. This is a stone compound or small city, depending on definitions, in what was then British Rhodesia and is now the hapless nation that takes its name from the ruins. British colonists and their sponsors just could not accept that the stone walls and buildings were constructed by the local people. The colonials concocted a whole series of fantastic hypotheses, many of which centered on King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba or the Lost Tribes of Israel. Other proposed builders included Arabs, Phoenicians, various Greeks, and even Atlanteans. Unfortunately, a number of reputable archeologists lent their names to these now discredited notions. The consensus today is that the city was built by the locals in medieval times. The eminent archeologist David Randall-MacIver had reached this conclusion as early as 1906, but it wasn't commonly accepted until the 1960s.

There was a little about Great Zimbabwe, in a documentary I saw on the Lemba of South Africa. They have a tradition of being Jews, and DNA evidence now seems to bear it out. Best guess is that their ancestors were Yemeni Jewish traders who came down the coast to trade at Great Zimbabwe, and for whatever reason ended up continuing inland at some point.

The DNA matches neither Guandique nor Condit, and Guandique's DNA was never found on anything connected to Levy.

OK, that's a little weird.

Apparently they went with this:

It was the testimony of Armando Morales, Guandique's former cellmate, that convinced Bacon. Morales testified that Guandique confided in him that he had killed Levy. Bacon said she did not believe that Morales, who belonged to same gang as Guandique, had a reason to lie.

The police also "botched" this same investigation -- which was ignored. Yep, this is weird.

But there was this:

The testimony of Halle Shilling and Christy Wiegand, the two women Guandique had pleaded guilty to attacking in separate incidents in Rock Creek Park about the same time Levy disappeared, also figured in the jury's verdict. Both women described how, as they were jogging on separate evenings in the late spring or early summer of 2001, Guandique jumped them from behind and dragged them into the woods, off the trail, and how they fought him off.

There were extensive trade links between Arabia and East Africa during pre-modern times. The island city of Zanzibar was the center of this trade.

Traders from Arabia (mostly Yemen), the Persian Gulf region of Iran (especially Shiraz), and west India probably visited Zanzibar as early as the 1st century CE. They used the monsoon winds to sail across the Indian Ocean and landed at the sheltered harbor located on the site of present-day Zanzibar Town. Although the islands had few resources of interest to the traders, they offered a good location from which to make contact and trade with the towns of the East African coast. A phase of urban development associated with the introduction of stone material to the construction industry of the East African coast began from the 10th century CE. (emphasis added)

Great Zimbabwe is less than a thousand miles from Zanzibar and only 200 or so from the coast, making it relatively accessible to enterprising traders.

Largest find of explosives in US history found in Escondido home

Authorities said Monday that an Escondido man had a "bomb factory" at his home in the 1900 block of Via Scott, including 13 home-made grenades.

During an arraignment before Judge Marshall Hockett in Vista on Monday afternoon, Deputy District Attorney Terri Perez said George Jakubec had more of the explosive material than ever discovered at a site in the United States.

Hockett ordered Jakubec held in the county jail in lieu of $5 million bail.

The defendant faces 28 charges, most for possession and manufacturing of explosive material and devices.

He is also charged with committing two bank robberies, one June 25 and another July 17, authorities revealed Monday. The robberies took place in the county but authorities would not specify where those hold-ups occurred.

Oh, there is a longstanding dislike of Christmas in certain branches (cough Puritans cough) of protestantism because it is not explicitly in the bible - and what is there is obviously spring lambing season. So obviously since Christmas was invented out of whole cloth by Rome (see it's even in the name! Mass...) it's not to be celebrated. My step-mother is a member of a Christian cult that argues this though she shuts up for the sake of her grandson; I do grant her credit for that.

Wow.

Where's your story? I came in late . . .

Originally, on Christmas Eve, there were 4 Wise Men, but one followed the North Star instead and failed to present Jesus with his gift. As punishment, God cursed him to eternal life and banished him to the frozen Northern wastes. He is only allowed freedom on the night of his sin, where he attempts to seek atonement by delivering toys to all children in the hopes he will eventually present a gift to Jesus at his second coming. The Elves are the imprisoned souls of children who stayed up to see Santa, saw him in his cursed form and are now forced to serve him throughout eternity.

Varek doesn't stand a chance.

I think your both missing the point, these are the type of people who think everyone is as stupid and as incapable of performing any large task as they are, regardless of their I.Q., race, religion, education, creed, or clan. They prefer to think that "aliens" did these things in the past only because then they wont have to feel quite so inferior measured against people who lived thousands of years ago and had no formal education.

It isn't racism, it isn't classism, it is dumbism.

384 jaunte  Mon, Nov 22, 2010 8:52:48pm

David Sedaris; 'six to eight black men':

While our Santa flies on a sled, Saint Nicholas arrives by boat and then transfers to a white horse. The event is televised, and great crowds gather at the waterfront to greet him. I'm not sure if there's a set date, but he generally docks in late November and spends a few weeks hanging out and asking people what they want.

"Is it just him alone?" I asked. "Or does he come with backup?"

Oscar's English was close to perfect, but he seemed thrown by a term normally reserved for police reinforcement.

"Helpers," I said. "Does he have any elves?"

Maybe I'm just overly sensitive, but I couldn't help but feel personally insulted when Oscar denounced the very idea as grotesque and unrealistic. "Elves," he said. "They're just so silly."

The words silly and unrealistic were redefined when I learned that Saint Nicholas travels with what was consistently described as "six to eight black men." I asked several Dutch people to narrow it down, but none of them could give me an exact number. It was always "six to eight," which seems strange, seeing as they've had hundreds of years to get a decent count.

The six to eight black men were characterized as personal slaves until the mid-fifties, when the political climate changed and it was decided that instead of being slaves they were just good friends. I think history has proven that something usually comes between slavery and friendship, a period of time marked not by cookies and quiet times beside the fire but by bloodshed and mutual hostility. They have such violence in Holland, but rather than duking it out among themselves, Santa and his former slaves decided to take it out on the public. In the early years, if a child was naughty, Saint Nicholas and the six to eight black men would beat him with what Oscar described as "the small branch of a tree."

"A switch?"

"Yes," he said. "That's it. They'd kick him and beat him with a switch. Then, if the youngster was really bad, they'd put him in a sack and take him back to Spain."

"Saint Nicholas would kick you?"

"Well, not anymore," Oscar said. "Now he just pretends to kick you."

"And the six to eight black men?"

"Them, too."

He considered this to be progressive, but in a way I think it's almost more perverse than the original punishment. "I'm going to hurt you, but not really." How many times have we fallen for that line?

This is my favorite bit of the whole piece:

While eight flying reindeer are a hard pill to swallow, our Christmas story remains relatively simple. Santa lives with his wife in a remote polar village and spends one night a year traveling around the world. If you're bad, he leaves you coal. If you're good and live in America, he'll give you just about anything you want. We tell our children to be good and send them off to bed, where they lie awake, anticipating their great bounty. A Dutch parent has a decidedly hairier story to relate, telling his children, "Listen, you might want to pack a few of your things together before you go to bed. The former bishop from Turkey will be coming along with six to eight black men. They might put some candy in your shoes, they might stuff you in a sack and take you to Spain, or they might just pretend to kick you. We don't know for sure, but we want you to be prepared."

"Dumbism" is certainly a factor, especially where modern, as opposed to ancient, achievements are involved. I actually knew an electronics engineer who was convinced that the original integrated circuit had been back-engineered from the Roswell UFO. He was just smart enough, obviously, to realize that he himself could not have thought of it in a million years.
This does not exclude my hypothesis, however, especially when we remember that racism is more prevalent among self-justifying dumbasses.

You reminded me of this 1970's era scifi story. The top strategic weapon planning guy gets abducted by aliens. He's all trained to resist interrogation, torture and the rest. So he resists all the questions, thinking the aliens want our weapons. Then they tell him what they really want. See they have all these weapons they use in awful wars, like the ability to turn a sunspot or CME into a laser to ash whatever planet they want to. They can explode stars. Render planets to elemental gases.

What they want to know is how we had civilization killing weapons for thirty years, and had found restraint. The secret they desperately sought was how we had kept the peace.

Furrygirl's sexy stripdown protest in Seattle airport mocking TSA security theater (NSFW video)

Self-described pornographer, sex worker, and sex blogger Furrygirl (Twitter, blog) opted for a patdown instead of the pornoscanners at the TSA checkpoint at the airport in Seattle, citing health concerns about radiation emitted by new devices.

To protest the TSA's invasive new "enhanced" screening procedures, she stripped down to see-thru, sexy underwear prior to her "grope-up," and videoblogged the whole thing (well, what the camera could capture from its vantage point on the little tray traveling down the conveyor belt).

The vid is not nearly as exciting as it sounds. Though you do get a few seconds of titillation, most of the vid is from a camera in an checkpoint bin, going through what I assume are x-ray machines.

....After weeks of violent protests, Bangladesh nearly doubled the minimum monthly wage Thursday for millions of workers in the key export garment industry to 3,000 taka ($43) from 1,662 taka, but it fell far short of labor union demands of 5,000 taka. The increase will take effect on November 1, 2010.

Speaking of the whole TSA thing:

The vid is not nearly as exciting as it sounds. Though you do get a few seconds of titillation, most of the vid is from a camera in an checkpoint bin, going through what I assume are x-ray machines.

Oh that's hilarious. I'll have to show that to Dragon_lady. She almost perfectly predicted this just in jest.

To be serious for a sec before I head to bed:

November 29 is the anniversary of the first Heart Operation to repair a Congenital Heart Defect (the Blalock-Taussig Shunt, which is still used today. I have one, it's 31 years old and working perfectly.

Heart Defect survivors are celebrating the 29th as Red and Blue day by wearing Red and Blue clothes. That's all you have to do - and explain why you picked those clothes if you are asked.

I'd be honored if my LGF friends would wear Red and Blue next Monday.

Thanks;

SteveC

There's the old (propaganda laced) movie "28 Days" that was along those themes.

Dude! That shit wasn't propaganda. Virus zombies are fucking real.
/oh wait, different movie. nevermind.

If you go to any big store and check the labels on the clothes, "Made in Bangladesh" is not uncommon. I've seen a few garments like that.

Now we know how stores here compete.

I see msnbc had the story a while back:

Bangladesh-based factories make clothes for international brands such JCPenney, Wal-Mart, H&M, Marks & Spencer, Zara and Carrefour.

I just saw an ad for an upcoming show on the "History" Channel that promises to reveal how "aliens" gave Nazi Germany it's weapons and technology prowess. Really? I mean fucking really?

Of course. Messerschmidt and Krupp hail from Vega.

I've got a few blue shirts, but nothing I can wear that is red. Not even a tie.

'spose I could put on one of my shirts, and just cut myself like an emo kid for the red.

Red tie, blue pants. That's the best I can do. My blue shirts don't match either the tie or the pants. :/

Dude, wear what you can, it's irrelevant what others make of it. I'd dearly love to be able to get even that close to those colors around people who might care why I did something like that.

Recommended science slide show of the day:

A Culture of Mathematics

It was put up last week by the NYT but I just got around to it today. Interesting to see not just how the ancients did math, but they learned from even then obsolete Sumerian.

That is awesome. And the answer they got is very accurate. 1.4142129 vs 1.4142136.

David Ben Gurion was a labor leader for quite some time. Once he called a seamstress strike, demanding their work hours be reduced from 18 a day to 12.

(!)

The strike was a success.

I have a real zinger for some ohh so religious folks:

PIRKEI AVOT: CHAPTER 5: MISHNAH 10

There are four types of people. He who says: 'Mine is mine and yours is yours' - this is the average type; and some say, this typifies Sodom; (He who says) 'Mine is yours and yours is mine' is an am ha-aretz; (He who says) 'Mine is yours and yours is yours' is a pious man; (And he who says) 'Mine is mine and yours is mine' is a wicked man .

Kehati

There are four types of people - varieties of social attitudes expressed in personal or material relations.

1) He who says: 'Mine is mine and yours is yours' - you are not to benefit from me, anymore than I should benefit from you, this is the average type - of person who, though hardly a saint, can neither be called wicked, since he limits his gains to his own domain and does not reach out for what belongs to others; and some say, this typifies Sodom - the refusal to share an advantage with others was a vice practiced by the Sodomites, who thereby ruled out the practice of hospitality. Moreover, they were heartless towards the poor and the stricken, as it is written (Ezek. 16:49); "Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread, and careless ease was in her and in her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy." According to Bartenura, this typifies Sodom means that such average behavior is dangerously close to that of Sodom because out of sheer habit he will begrudge all advantage to others, even when it does not entail any loss to his own person. This was the standard of Sodom where strangers were spurned even though Sodom was spacious and well provided.

Midrash Sh'muel regards the Mishnah's twofold evaluation as alternative, depending upon the intentions of the person in question. If his primary motive is not to draw on what belongs to others, in accordance with the verse (Prov. 15:27): "and he who hates gifts shall live," but in order to strengthen his resolve he adds: Mine is mine, then his attitude is defined as average. But if, driven by avarice, his primary motive is to begrudge others, and his statement yours is yours merely serves to cover mine is mine, then this corresponds to the character of Sodom.

Right now I need to go sleep this off and try to get ready for another day of taking care of Dad tomorrow.

Anyway, thank all you guys/gals, I'll type at you some more tomorrow...

"After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now."
