DeLay the Money Launderer

Politics • Views: 27,436

Republican dancin’ machine Tom DeLay has been found guilty of money laundering.

AUSTIN, Tex. — Tom DeLay, one of the most powerful and divisive Republican lawmakers ever to come out of Texas, was convicted Wednesday of money-laundering charges in a state trial, five years after his indictment here forced him to resign as majority leader in the House of Representatives.

After 19 hours of deliberation, a jury of six men and six women decided that Mr. DeLay was guilty of one charge of money laundering and one charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

And yet another crooked member of the Gomorrah Old Party gets caught red handed doing shady deals with big business and takes a perp walk. Good Riddance.

I'm not going to defend DeLay. He was all force, all the time. His nickname of "The Hammer" was amplified by the fact that he saw all problems as a matter of pounding down the opposition. It's easy to see someone like that going bad. He was a Category 4 leader: Stupid and Energetic, the worst kind there is.

Upding for the Rommel reference. But you do realize that category four, in Rommel's quote was the SS. The really dangerous ones.

True. But the quote was not by Erwin Rommel. It was by Helmut von Moltke the Elder. It was something of a maxim for German officers at high levels, since they often had to decide with whom to fill command slots. Many of the SS leadership did fall into that category, though. With Sepp Dietrich serving as the exemplar, as witness his FAIL of an attack in the Ardennes in December 1944.

I divide my officers into four classes; the clever, the lazy, the industrious, and the stupid. Most often two of these qualities come together. The officers who are clever and industrious are fitted for the highest staff appointments. Those who are stupid and lazy make up around 90% of every army in the world, and they can be used for routine work. The man who is clever and lazy however is for the very highest command; he has the temperament and nerves to deal with all situations. But whoever is stupid and industrious is a menace and must be removed immediately!

this is not so different than larry wall's famous description of what makes for good programmers:

"We will encourage you to develop the three great virtues of a programmer: laziness, impatience, and hubris."

As reports continue to come with normal or below-normal wait times, this will be our final update of this post today.

Though volume was around expected levels, our preparations for today kept wait times at such a minimum that some airports are closing screening lanes due to a lack of passenger throughput.

In addition to our operational updates from the field, we’ve rounded up news coverage from across the country about today’s airport travel experience:

Horseshit. What Rangel did wasn't even in the same league. What Delay was convicted of doing is what the Mob does. Chicago has seen lots of money-laundering politicians, I know the breed:

"A crook is a crook, and there's something healthy about his frankness in the matter. But any guy who pretends he is enforcing the law and steals on his authority is a swell snake. The worst type of these punks is the big politician. You can only get a little of his time because he spends so much time covering up that no one will know that he is a thief. A hard-working crook will-and can-get those birds by the dozen, but right down in his heart he won't depend on them-hates the sight of them."

That's a typical reaction from Republicans in this state because Travis County is a merciful island of blue in an ocean of red.

However, there are plenty of folks who listen to Alex Jones, and love Ron Paul around here. Hell, there are even quite a few Republicans, too. It just so happens they don't like DeLay either, because the guy really is that much of an asshole.

In my experience, not a lot of Jewish Augustines

because of our jewish tradition of naming people after somebody, combined with a modern habit of using fashionable names, many non-jewish names come into the jewish orbit. "irving" was once a very anglo-saxon sort of name, until isadore's grandson had to be named in the 20th century. then of course irving's grandson or great grandson these days gets a name like 'ian' or 'ivan'. the same thing happened in my family for the descendants of the original levi dogowitz who come over from da shtetl in poland vouldn't ya know...

Vet, 77, Busted For Obama Death Threat

A 77-year-old South Carolina man whose home was stocked with an arsenal of guns told Secret Service agents that he wanted to shoot Barack Obama “for what he has done to this country,” according to a criminal complaint charging him with threatening the president’s life.

Michael Bowden allegedly first spoke of killing Obama last week during a “routine check-up” at a Veterans Administration clinic in Spartanburg. Bowden, pictured in the mug shot at right, told a nurse that he “was thinking of traveling to Washington, DC, to shoot the President (Obama) because he is not doing enough to help African Americans,” according to an affidavit sworn by Agent Mark Booth.

Older people are more trusting than later generations and grew up with trusted journalists like Walter Cronkite (it also makes them prime targets for scams). They're more likely to take Fox at face value and Fox's intent is to scare them.

"Now as for a real man, the only person in American politics that is on the same level as Vladimir Putin is LTC. Allen West. He’s a real man and a war hero. I wish we had more politicians like him and not Academics, political dynasties and Metrosexuals."

It was about ruinous taxation? What? I don't even know how to address that. There was no IRS in those days hoss.

What kind of air freshener scent best covers up strong ammonia pee smell? Anyone know? I don't even smell it anymore unless I have been out of the house for 1/2 an hour or more, but the relatives keep complaining that the place smells bad.

Since there will always be a few pairs of dirty underwear and probably also wet sheets/underpad/blanket/waterproof underpad around here waiting to be washed unless I do laundry three times a day it is going to smell.

Any suggestions on how to cover it up without driving people out of the place with equally strong "Cologne" type scents?

That kind does. Sometimes it does serve a legitimate purpose. If new evidence on a historical event has come to light and that evidence warrants a rethink of the event then revisionism is justified. I'd argue that Revisionism is acceptable when its motive is the search for the truth. It becomes evil when, like the Party in 1984, its purpose is to justify actions that the reviser wants to take in the present.

Perhaps you could put things awaiting washing in a heavyweight ziploc-type bag? They come in large sizes. Or soak things in a borax (or baking soda) and water solution in a lidded container, like a diaper pail . You can then just dump the whole thing in the washer and spin out the water before washing.

Confining the odor will be more successful than covering it up.

152 enigma3535  Wed, Nov 24, 2010 7:47:26pm

Not sure if this post will fit here ... however, this one wanted to know if this conviction was righteous or not ... IMHO, one can typically get a sense of that by researching the attorneys involved ... not the Judge or Jury [that a well paid attorney like Delay had should insure that they were sympathetic] I could be wrong ... these excerpts from Ronnie Earle' wikipedia page [the original prosecutor] may be telling ... still researching some background on the defense ....

Ronald Dale "Ronnie" Earle (born February 23, 1942) was, until January 2009, the District Attorney for Travis County, Texas. He became nationally known for filing charges against House majority leader Tom DeLay in September 2005 for conspiring to violate Texas' election law and/or to launder money. Earle has also prosecuted other politicians, including Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and State Representative Mike Martin. On one occasion, he prosecuted himself for an election law violation after missing a campaign finance filing deadline by one day; he was fined $212.

Investigation and indictment of Tom DeLay

For over two years, Earle and eight separate grand juries investigated possible violations of Texas campaign finance law in the 2002 state legislative election. His investigation of two political action committees that spent a combined $3.4 million on 22 Republican Texas House races focused on a political action committee founded by DeLay, (Texans for a Republican Majority PAC). During the investigation, DeLay charged that Earle was a "runaway district attorney" with "a long history of being vindictive and partisan".

On September 28, 2005, the grand jury indicted DeLay for conspiring to violate Texas state election law. Texas prohibits corporate contributions in state legislative races. The indictment charged that Texans for a Republican Majority, DeLay's PAC, accepted corporate contributions, laundered the money through the Republican National Committee, and directed it to favored Republican candidates in Texas. The presiding Democrat judge in the case, Pat Priest, eventually threw out this charge and the Court of Criminals Appeals upheld his decision in 2007.

Earle failed in a second attempt to secure new indictments against DeLay. That grand jury returned a "no bill" due to insufficient evidence according to at least one grand jury member. That member also claimed the "no bill" visibly angered Earle.

Earle sought and eventually received a second indictment of DeLay from a new grand jury in Austin that had been seated for just a few hours on charges of conspiracy to launder money. DeLay's lawyers assert that this indictment is also flawed. While the Texas Penal Code defines laundered money only as money gained as the "proceeds of criminal activity," DeLay's lawyers maintain the corporate donations came from normal and legal business activity.

DeLay's attorney, Dick DeGuerin, filed a legal complaint charging Earle with prosecutorial misconduct in connection with the DeLay indictment. In an interview with the Houston Chronicle DeGuerin said he did not yet have any hard evidence to support these claims, but was seeking court permission to depose grand jurors. Earle has claimed the charges have "no merit."
The case has yet to go to trial and there have been no new rulings since the first charge against DeLay was thrown out in the summer of 2007.

Tom DeLay has been scheduled for trial on criminal charges stemming from DeLay's 2005 indictment. On August 25, 2010 Senior Judge Pat Priest denied DeLay's motion for a change of venue from Travis County to Fort Bend County, where DeLay resides, and set a trial date for October 2010.

I agree with you 100%, except for the taxation part, there had to be some kind of tax system in place, not IRS obviously but some sort of equivalent had to exist. Otherwise how was the government and military financed? I'm just wondering, your point is absolutely valid, taxes were not a cause for the civil war, at least not according to history.

The Defense:

Dick DeGuerin (born in Austin, Texas, February 16, 1941) is a Texas criminal defense attorney. DeGuerin was admitted to the State Bar in 1965. Early in his career (1971–1982), he was an associate with Percy Foreman.
As of December, 2005, he is representing former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay in DeLay's defense against indictments for money laundering and conspiracy, brought by Texas prosecutor Ronnie Earle. DeGuerin, himself a Democrat, previously prevailed over Earle in a case involving misconduct charges against U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. He also represented bankers involved in fraud cases tied to the Enron collapse.

Notable cases and clients

Represented Waco, Texas leader David Koresh during his standoff with the FBI and the ATF.
Represented real estate heir Robert Durst, who was charged with dismembering the body of his 71-year-old neighbor and throwing the pieces in Galveston Bay.
Celeste Beard
Barbara Piotrowski and Richard Minns
Lilla Paulus
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison
Ramsey Muniz
Betty Maldonado
Juana Leija
David Mark Temple, accused of killing his wife who was 8 months pregnant at the time.
Constable Mae Walker[1]
Dr. Eric Scheffey[2]
Allen Stanford
Billy Joe Shaver

Regarding the case against Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, this does not appear to be reflected on her page [the result may be telling for why this dude was Delay's attorney]:

This is from Earls's page ....

Earle filed charges against Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, then Texas State Treasurer, for allegedly misusing state telephones and allegedly assaulting a staffer. Earle attempted to drop the charges on the first day in court — in fact, at the pre-trial hearing — after the judge in the case questioned the admissibility of his evidence. The judge refused to allow it, instructing the jury to return a "not guilty" verdict so the charge could not be brought against her again.[1] In the case against Senator Hutchison, when it became clear that a dismissal was necessary, he dispatched an assistant to stand up in court and make the motion. A less widely known fact in the Hutchison affair is that she was indicted twice. The first grand jury included a member who was under accusation of a crime and disqualified to serve. Thus, the original indictment was void under Texas law. Earle's failure to realize that the first grand jury was improperly constituted led to all the indictments from that grand jury being declared void, both in the Hutchison case and in the cases of everyday citizens. Earle sought re-indictment, reviving the case. Ultimately, however, Hutchinson was acquitted.
According to Time Magazine, Earle raided Hutchison's offices at the State Treasury looking for proof of allegations that she used state equipment and employees on state time to help with her campaign. She was indicted by a grand jury in September 1993 for official misconduct and records tampering. Hutchison was acquitted, as Earle did not have sufficient evidence to present. Time reported on July 14, 2003, "Earle amassed thousands of documents as evidence and many thought the new Senator would lose her job. But at a pretrial hearing, the judge and Earle clashed over the admissibility of the documents; fearing he would lose, Earle declined to present a case. Hutchison was quickly acquitted and Earle was portrayed as a fool." Obviously if the evidence was inadmissible there would be no case to argue, so Earle had to abide by the Judge's ruling.

Sounds good, I'll buy the first book tomorrow. I've been looking for a decent fantasy series to read, after spending last couple of years reading technical manuals for work and historical novels for pleasure. Many people recommended George R.R. In the exercise of a right so ancient' so wellestablished, and so necessary for selfpreservation' the people of the Confederate States' in their conventions' determined that the wrongs which they had suffered and the evils with which they were menaced required that they should revoke the delegation of powers to the Federal Government which they had ratified in their several conventions. I am thankful I turned on PBS and am sitting here enjoying the Sondheim Birthday concert.

Early Thanksgiving dinner because son's is working 12-8 tomorrow.
2 pies, same crust batch, one is perfect the pecan pie went nuts...hard and sticking to bottom of pan...filling good though.
2 turkey breasts cooking and my gas oven decides to heat at about 25 degrees lower (in an oven that is normally 25 degrees hotter so I always cook at lower temps then called for) then it should. So of course they were not ready on time so I had to take them out and slice off the meat that was cooked and then put the rest back in and cook for another 45 min.
Bah!

Ignition on the van stopped working today (again, we have replaced it 2 times) and we had to go rescue the son from work when he got off.
What a day.

I guess this is what I get for putting my Christmas tree up on Saturday.

re: #120 LudwigVanQuixote

It was never about slavery? The why was the south so keen on making there was always an equal number of slave states, and when they would finally loose the congress due to population, felt the need to split?

And more to the point:

If it was never about slavery, why do the various states' Secession Declarations all declare, explicitly, that it's about slavery?

They weren't subtle about it. At all. No need to read between the lines. My personal favorite is Mississippi:

Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin...

But for a dedicated teabagger, I'm sure there's some alternate way to interpret that, right?

If it was never about slavery, why do the various states' Secession Declarations all declare, explicitly, that it's about slavery?

They weren't subtle about it. At all. No need to read between the lines. My personal favorite is Mississippi:

But for a dedicated teabagger, I'm sure there's some alternate way to interpret that, right?

'Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery' really means, 'Our taxes are too high'.

"Women are discouraged from singing alone because men are not at the same spiritual place as women."

Should be: Men are discouraged from listening to women sing because men are on a lower spiritual level than women.

Yeah I wrote:

The issue has to do with men becoming attracted to a woman by her voice. Kol isha literally means woman's voice. Some comment about a distraction from prayer and reserve the ruling to times of prayer. Others take it much further and consider a woman's voice a temptation at all times. As to women being in a different spiritual place the general teaching is that their place is higher than mens' - this is one of the reasons they do not need ten of them to pray.

States rights, y'know. All about freedom and liberty.

Atwater:

You start out in 1954 by saying, "n*****, n*****, n*****." By 1968 you can't say "n*****" — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me — because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than "n*****, n*****."

Here's a cute story.

The funeral director was trying to get my mother to hire the chapel chaplain (a female Reform rabbi) to lead my father's services, for a fee of $500.

My mother is not at all observant, but she said, "I have three grandsons who are ordained Orthodox rabbis and one who is a cantor, who will eulogize their beloved grandfather for free, I'm not paying somebody who never even knew him!"

My sons are Cohanim, which means they could not enter the chapel, but there was a microphone and a video feed outside which they used and could direct the proceedings inside. They put on a very inspirational service that did not require too much standing or saying unfamiliar Hebrew prayers. My son sang the "El Maleh Rachamim" beautifully.

They can't, they spent too much time covering 9/11 and attacking the troofers. Fox can't turn on a dime on this one, not without losing a good chunk of their viewers.

Considering all the exposure that Fox News gives to Alex Jones, I doubt that.

They spent years assailing Loose Change and all the 9/11 troofer shit as treason, but now they treat the guy who made Loose Change like he's a genius. If they can do that, they can damn well find a way to turn 9/11 troofer shit into a badge of honor.

What do you mean? When he becomes a Troofer? If that happens, Fox News will have to can him or lose all respect from anyone not insane. I'm pretty sure they won't choose the latter. It would cost them viewers. Most likely, Roger Ailes would bar Beck from troofing to protect the ratings.

Why would they can him for trutherism. Napolitno hosts his show when he goes on vacation, He's a truther and his audience isn't bothered by it. Geraldo's a truther and nobody's bothered by it. The incoming congressional chair to the transportation committee thinks Alex Jones is a genius and nobody cares. The problem is that Trooferism is not where the money is. It's Sponsor Repellent. For that reason alone, I think it will be kept off of Fox's flagship shows. Fox wants to sell commercial time (in that they are like any other network), they're not going to deliberately antagonize the paymaster.

After all, Napolitano is on Fox Business, not Fox News. If Beck were to say such things, the firestorm would be intense. Other news outlets would take notice and pounce. re: #242 calochortus

So why couldn't your sons enter the chapel? And what is BT?

I was asked that earlier today.

BT is an abbreviation Baal Teshuva. It means someone who was not brought up observant (and indeed I was brought up in a very non-observant home) who became more religious later in life. I got into it in college.

FFB stands for Frum (strictly observant ) From Birth.

Jewish people are very creative and imaginative. We are very good at coming up with way too many divisions.

As you might expect, both sides of this divide have different strengths and weaknesses. The FFB have the advantage of getting an early start on a vast subject matter. It is simply impossible to overstate how much there is just to know in the first place about observant Judaism. I am not even talking about finding your own voice within it and getting a sense of what you might or might not connect with, but I mean even knowing what it all is, how it inter relates and what you make of it in the world.

The BTs have the advantage of "knowing what they are missing" and having chosen to get more involved themselves. They have the advantage of looking at the process of learning through adult eyes from the start. They also frequently - but not always - have a better secular education (I mean things like history, science and mathematics).

Cranky people from both ends of the divide sometimes like to "out Jew" each other. I honestly find such things utterly obnoxious. It is not that my stalker interlocutor is not Jewish. Sadly though, he does however not particularly connect to much of what Judaism actually is.

I haven't seen much talk about it. The usual suspects aren't really very concerned about LGBT issues except perhaps in general terms. It's a despicable vote and allegedly this amendment was pushed by African nations and Morocco. The usual suspect nations voted yes. It's astonishing to see such countries like Russia, South Africa and the Bahamas also voting yes. What's repugnant is to see that Afghanistan on that list considering all the trouble we've gone through since the invasion -- freedom and democracy? No need to see anything about what a joke the UN has become and how so many nations are governed by animals.

That's because Tom DeLay would've had pistols at dawn with the previous Travis County DA, Ronnie Earle, if he'd just had the legal clearance to do so. They hated each other, and the indictment that led to this conviction came from Earle.

He's going to cry about a vendetta until someone pardons him. Too bad for DeLay that Limbaugh, Beck, and the other howler monkeys are on vacation until next week. Until then, he has to rely on the freepers and RedState to defend him.

The Cohanim are descendants of the priests. It goes through the male line. There is genetic testing for it too that show unique genetic markers for them on thy chromosome also. Those markers show a single common male ancestor some 3000 years ago. Tradition holds that they are all descended from Aaron.

There are many laws that are specific to Cohanim. One of them is that they can not be in the presence of dead people.

Cohanim knew they were Cohanim because their fathers were Cohanim. (There is a joke about this, involving a man who pesters a rabbi repeatedly to 'make him' a Cohen, only to be told this is impossible. Finally, the rabbi asks him why he wants to be a Cohen so badly, and is told, "My father was one, and also my grandfather.)

The genetic marker is specific to the Cohanim. AFAIK, they haven't found a specific one for the Leviim.

Interesting. How were Cohanim identified prior to discovery of genetics? And how can genetics tell Cohanim from a Levite?

Well, before genetics, you were a Cohain if your father was a Cohain - and only by birth, not by adoption.

You might ask if over the three thousand years or not someone passed himself off as a Cohain as a fraud. I can't say it never happened, but the way that Jewish communities worked, it would be pretty hard to do. If you moved into some new town and said, I'm a Cohain eventually someone would check wherever it was you came from about your family. There is also no particular financial benefit to being a Cohain that might inspire someone to try to fake it.

However, you still can't say it never ever happened.

When genetics came around, there were several major studies done. It is my understanding that hundreds of Cohanim who were identified as coming from various well known lines, that everyone agreed were Cohanim, from geographically isolated communities, were tested and that a statistically significant set of markers was found to be shared by all of them on the y chromosome, and that those markers were distinct from a non-Cohain Jewish control group - including levites.

Being imaginative is good, but I do wonder how you manage to keep track of even half of the religious stuff and hold down a job as well as maybe having a personal life and sleeping as well

I did happen to see a program on the genetic testing (Nova, maybe?) which was pretty cool. I did not know about the restriction on contact with the dead.

I actually don't know the law on this, what happens at the funeral itself for your sons?

They're not allowed to enter the chapel. When the mes (deceased person) is wheeled out of the chapel, they are not allowed to approach within daled amos (four "cubits" which is about 18 inches) of the deceased, and they are not allowed to enter the crypt.

It's always been my understanding that for parents or a wife or child, a Cohen is permitted to enter the cemetery, but Chabad practice may differ from what I've been taught.

A Cohen may enter the cemetery and participate in the chapel, at the funerals of his wife, father and mother, son and daughter. But not for a "second-degree" relative such as a grandparent, grandchild, cousin, or in-law.

Fascinating stuff, I had no idea about genetic markers, I always thought it was determined by birth as you described. It is also very curious that Levites cannot be identified in this way since they should have a very similar Y chromosome chain coming from the same male ancestor. I'm going to read up on this, you got me intrigued!

Yes and no. The Levi line goes back much further than the Cohain line. Cohain is a subset of Levi. Levi was some time before Moses and Aaron.

But having these genetic markers is not sufficient to prove that one is a Cohen who may perform priestly duties, or even that someone is Jewish.

Let's say in ancient times, or in recent times, a Cohen ignored the law and married a divorcee or a non-Jew. Their children would have the DNA marker, but they would not be allowed to perform the avodah.

I think that "competition" as in "out Jewing" is not in the manner of proving faith. IF faith ever needed to be proved.
That's my sub-christian perspective on what you have posted. I am very unfamiliar with the Jewish faith. And was raised, if it matters, a Christian Scientist.

When Jews try to out-Jew each other, it's more about Yiddish cultural traditions than religious beliefs and practices; i.e., can Woody Allen out-Jew Jerry Seinfeld? The answer has nothing to do with how scrupulously either of them may keep kosher, or keep the Sabbath, or even whether either of them even believes in God at all.

It's an Ashkenazi thing, Sephardi just don't understand.

i had to do a bit of digging to even find out what "ecranization" means - apparantly the process of bringing a work such as a novel to the screen. altho it seems it is found in english, it is an extremely obscure word! there is no on line dictionary that defines it, so i had to suss it out by context. finally a little light went on in my head and i realized it originates in the french word for 'screen', écran

re: #285 ausador

I just saw your question up thread. I used to do home care and palliative care at home so I've had to deal with that sort of thing.

I used a few things. Vinegar works really well as a deodorizer. Diluted in a spray bottle or full strength for particularly troublesome spots. You can also just leave some in a bowl and it will neutralize odors without perfuming the air. You can also get deodorizers that trap rather then cover odors, usually they're based on some sort of charcoal or minerals. It might sound awful but the best place to find these sorts of things is in a store that sells farm supplies. The best one I ever found was this net bag of some mineral that you leave out. It absorbs smells and then you 'recharge' it by just putting it outside in the sun.

There are also enzyme based solutions and sprays which you can get in a pet supply place or store aisle. They work really well at getting rid of particularly bad ammonia smells.

Hope this helps.

If only Delay had switched parties, he'd have been "censured" and all would be forgiven. Charlie Rangel can provide the secret decoder ring for this minor "transgression."

That doesn't make sense. Both Democrats and Republicans get to vote if Rangel is censured.

Reps. Christopher Lee (R), Tom Reed (R) and Bill Owens (D) told the Observer they will vote to censure Rangel. Reps. Peter King (R), John Hall (D), Edolphus Towns (D) and Paul Tonko (D) said they are undecided. Most refused to answer the question, according to the Observer.

Congress doesn't have judicial powers and that applies to Rangel and would have applied to DeLay had he not stepped down. Rangel will face his real legal problems outside of congress just as DeLay faced his.

It wasn't just the Normans who imported French words, I think most of British nobility spoke French exclusively up until 17th century, Richard the Lion Heart for example, didn't even speak English according to some historians. I used to argue foaming-at-the-mouth like about English not having nearly as much words as Russian first year I immigrated, but I must confess I was very very wrong. I came to realize that not only does it have vastly larger vocabulary than any other language, it is a major contributor in creation of new words.

Story for FG & Ausador:

When my grandmother was dying, she was living in my mother's house. First it was okay, because my two cousins, both studying for their RN's, were there. Also, pretty much everyone was there. Even though she had a serious stroke, they had it covered. My older sister and I both had a lot of kids, so we just sometimes dropped in.

Grandma was, in the words of her doctor "a tough old broad"* and lingered two months. At about the one month mark, the cousins had gone back to school and my aunts back to their jobs. It was my mother, a sister who was home in between jobs (she had one lined up in China in about three weeks), and sometimes my uncle.

Mom got on the phone and told my sister and I they needed help. I arranged to come over on a certain day.

I walked in, carrying a DVD for my kids (they were too young to stay home alone), a mop and broom, a meal to cook and a meal to freeze. My younger sister looked at me. You should have seen her face.

"Oh, that's right. You're coming today. I'm getting into the shower now."

My uncle had woken her up to tell her he was leaving so she could sit with Grandma, but she hadn't really woken up. Grandma (who had had a stroke, remember) had pulled off her diaper and peed all over the place. Little sister had spent the morning cleaning it up.

She hadn't remembered until that morning that I was coming.

*this is what he told her when she asked when she wasn't dead in a week like he had told her

She seems to be elsewhere. I will try to answer. If she says I missed something important to mention, she is right - because I have not studied all of this part of the Law.

However, I am certain of the following:

In general to be a Cohain, what she was referring to were any of the things about one's parentage that might disqualify someone.

For example, you can not be the result of an adulterous or forbidden relationship. A Cohain must marry a non-widow or divorcee. If your dad the Cohain did any of those things you are disqualified.

I would expect that someone coming into a schul and claiming to be a Cohain would be asked about his background and if there was any reason to doubt him, he would be checked out.

yeah - actually most of the nobility were normans - william the conquerer at first tried to rule with the anglo-saxon nobility that were left after the conquest but then massacred them because they were rebellious. it took a century or two i think before the english kings spoke much english (also, when the george I, the first of the current english royal house, was imported from germany to rule england, he didn't speak much english either). french (of a sort) was required for many centuries in english law courts - remember reading about a legal paper from about the 17th century that contained the phrase "il a frappe la dame avec un brickbat" or something like that...

of course the norman ("northmen") were really vikings who had only learned french some 100 or so years before 1066, so it is peculiar that they were so reluctant to give it up

Thanksgiving Divorce

A man in Phoenix calls his son in New York the day before Thanksgiving and says "I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough.

"Pop, what are you talking about?" the son screams. We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the father says. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her."

Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this,"
She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at her father, "You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up.

The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Okay," he says, "they're coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own way."

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYBODY

I'm not going to defend DeLay. He was all force, all the time. His nickname of "The Hammer" was amplified by the fact that he saw all problems as a matter of pounding down the opposition. It's easy to see someone like that going bad. He was a Category 4 leader: Stupid and Energetic, the worst kind there is.

Umm, the very worst kind of leader is smart and energetic and cruel, and on the other side. Jochen Peiper, commander of the tank brigade in the 1SS Panzer division, for instance. Or in the American civil war, Nathan Bedford Forrest.

It won't do to dismiss evildoers as stupid. Some are very good at what they do, gifted and driven.

Peiper was belatedly assassinated at home by an arsonist, and good riddance. Forrest survived the war and went on to found the Ku Klux Klan. He died a natural death. His great grandson was killed in action flying against the Germans in WW 2. Ironic...

One thing that hasn't been brought up in this thread is the main reason that DeLay was funnelling money to state elections. He was in the midst of spearheading a US Congressional redistricting for Texas in 2003 (two years after the census-based redistricting had occurred), and needed to fill as many Republican seats as possible to get his plan implemented.

Wikipedia: 2003 Texas redistricting

When the Texas Legislature was seated after the 2002 elections that DeLay's dirty money had so much influence on, when it came time for the redistricting debate, Democratic members refused to be seated and went as far as going out of state in protest. DeLay (not the state) attempted to have them arrested. The redistricting finally passed after Governor Rick Perry waived the 2/3 quorum rule after calling a special session and Republican Legislature members passed the redistricting.

Because of the race-based gerrymandering that he accomplished with this power play, Republicans went from a 17-15 balance in favor of Democrats in 2002 to a 21-11 configuration favoring Republicans in 2004.

re: #120 LudwigVanQuixote

OK ok, you made me do it... You have to see this to believe it. I suppose the point of bringing this is that the wingnuts really honestly are this insane and divorced from fact.

I looked at the stalker blog... This is from the main Post on the neo confederates.

It was never about slavery? The why was the south so keen on making there was always an equal number of slave states, and when they would finally loose the congress due to population, felt the need to split?

It was about ruinous taxation? What? I don't even know how to address that. There was no IRS in those days hoss.

It was about enemy invasion? Yeah yeah, they invaded after the South split from the Union, declared a separate nation, raised an army and opened fire first (!) on Ft. Sumter.

And to top it off, invaded Union or fence-sitting states, several of them:

Seized Liberty Arsenal in Liberty, MO

Invaded Kentucky (under Polk)

invaded New Mexico.

The United States of America, like any other sovereign state would have done, moved to reinstate civil authority in areas that were in rebellion.

The North was divided on the topic of slavery. Lincoln's declared aim in his 1860 campaign was to confine slavery to its then-current boundaries, and reverse the Dred Scott decision which verged on making the institution nationwide by court decree.

Battle Hymn of the Republic notwithstanding, the war did not begin as a crusade to extirpate slavery. That came later, as the casualty lists lengthened and people who had at first been ambivalent began to look for some fruit of victory that might be commensurate with the cost.

But the North had other reasons to fight. For states lying on the upper Mississippi, the prospect of tariffs and charges all the way from Memphis to New Orleans was intolerable. The river was then about the only way to move bulk goods from that area to market.

For many, it was simply a matter of patriotism...but that spirit rests ultimately on an understanding that man without society is doomed, and that secession is one step toward atomization. If secession without war had been accepted, how long would it have been until the next batch of states had some little grievance with DC?

There was also a significant sentiment in the North that the South was pressing the case that their State rights had precedence over the North. Also, the South had no problem with a strong Federal government when it protected their interests.

The short version:

1) The behavior exhibited by the machine in the video is extremely complex.

2) Prominent among the more recent topics found on this particular website is a general distaste for the demonization of science itself by people who have the power to make decisions that affect everyone.

2a) one of the darlings of the right wing, Sarah Palin, famously mocked "fruit fly research in Paris, France" during the 2008 campaign, as though that were the most ridiculously frivolous thing imaginable. What she didn't know (and presumably couldn't have imagined to have known) is that the very "fruit fly research" she so disdained was being done for the express purpose of improving the quality of human life. I'm going to guess that she has no idea why fruit flies have been a favorite specimen of study for geneticists for decades.

3) never mind.

You both mention robots and machines, but all I see are three king-questish looking characters standing on a hillly terrain, there's a flatscreen tv next to them. There are also three clouds behind said sprites one of which is moving east I guess. There's also some text in the middle stating "SorrynThis video does not exist". re: #380 Sergey Romanov

I think you're right, it looks like magic happens in Vid(that) function. I've tried getting to the bottom of this but external javascript files referenced here are intentionally made impossible to read. Take lgf.min.js for example, it's 84929 bytes long without a single line break. Vim can handle it but my eyes cannot, and I'm too lazy to try and figure out a way to make it human readable.

In any case, since this problem seems to be affecting only the two of us it must be related to our browser settings, or plugins we're using.
