Taking a break from mashing garlic. The feast kicks off at 4 PM today. I think I’ll take another lizards idea and eat a large breakfast now to tide me over till the afternoon when I’ll eat some fruit so I’ll have plenty of room for the real food.

Be well, be happy, lizards.

I want to say something snarky, but I think I’ll settle for Happy Thanksgiving, scaly ones.

I’m thankful for my family, friends, country, and LGF. Where else can someone go for a chat at 10:49PM while wearing your pajamas?

Happy Thanksgiving, lizards.

Copied from the last thread…

Feel good story of the day:

Deployed troops receive 245,000 pounds of turkey

Who eats 244,854 pounds of turkey, 4,308 cans of cranberry sauce and 38,292 pies?

The troops on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq for their Thanksgiving feast this year. And that considerable feast is slimmed down compared with last year, reflecting the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

Only 144,854 pounds of turkey has been sent to Iraq this year, compared with 376,924 last year.

Local commands did increase their orders of shrimp and beef, however — ordering 900 more pounds of shrimp than last year and nearly twice the amount of steamship round and ribeye, a total of 47,000 pounds.

As could be expected, the turkey count was plumped up for Afghanistan — 100,000 pounds, according to information provided by Nick Sistrun, a spokesman for Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support. That’s up from 90,575 last year. Commands ordered more of everything for troops in Afghanistan.

Officials began their Thanksgiving planning in the spring to ensure the items get to troops in time.

Don’t forget to thank the troops during dinner today!

Have fun, stay safe, and wherever you are today, enjoy the food. Happy Thanksgiving, Lizards! :)

Happy Thanksgiving to all the lizards everywhere.

It’s good day to be grateful.

Most of the world’s population can’t pick up the phone, say ‘I’m hungry’ and in 30 minutes have food delivered.

Seriously.

It’s not just about turkey & football…

Hans A. von Spakovsky: A Thanksgiving Sacrifice

As we sit down to feast with our families this holiday, the blessing might well include a word of thanks to the men and women of our armed forces. While we celebrate our national holiday in the warmth and comfort of homes, they serve at grave peril in faraway places like Iraq and Afghanistan.

Some of our troops are in Korea. There an unprovoked attack from the North killed four South Koreans on Tuesday. That outrage reminds us of the continuing danger posed by the murderous thugs in Pyongyang. But it should also spur us to remember those Americans who, 60 years ago, spent Thanksgiving fighting at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. It was a vicious, brutal battle and one of the Marine Corps’ finest hours.

By Thanksgiving of 1950, X Corps (a joint force composed of American Army and UN troops), had advanced along with the 1st Marine Division deep into North Korea, almost to the Yalu River. But in an attack that caught the Americans by surprise, Chinese troops poured across the border and attacked in almost overwhelming waves.

Many units of X Corps disintegrated under the relentless attacks. The Marines, under the command of General Oliver Smith and Marine Corps legend Colonel Chesty Puller, along with elements of the 7th Infantry Division and the British Royal Marines, fought a rear guard action throughout a slow retreat from Chosin. Of course, Smith famously declared, “Gentlemen, we are not retreating. We are merely attacking in another direction.” And he was correct. As a military historian later observed, you can’t retreat when you are completely surrounded.

Read the whole thing.

Van Gogh from Space - July 13th, 2005

Description: In the style of Van Gogh’s painting “Starry Night,” massive congregations of greenish phytoplankton swirl in the dark water around Gotland, a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea. Phytoplankton are microscopic marine plants that form the first link in nearly all ocean food chains. Population explosions, or blooms, of phytoplankton, like the one shown here, occur when deep currents bring nutrients up to sunlit surface waters, fueling the growth and reproduction of these tiny plants.

Just stopping by to say Happy Thanksgiving to all; today’s top Thanksgiving quote from Dad so far:

“I’m not feeling so well, why don’t you get me some of that Beercillin?”

I expect a few more keepers from him as the day progresses.

Well, I’m wearing pajamas. The bloody heaters in this apartment don’t work. (It’s the Bay Area, so it hovers around 60°F in here, cold, but nothing that isn’t tolerable with a little bundling up.)

Anyway, I’m thankful for a roof over my head and a new job as a ski instructor this year.

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all. I heard my oven beep (baking all day will help with the temperature), so I need to get started on my squash pie. Step one, bake squash until softened.

(I’m also thankful for my kittens, even if one did manage to step on the power button on my powerstrip and shut off my computer just now.)

17 Tigger2  Thu, Nov 25, 2010 11:31:06am

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.
Mine is going to be awsome, my daughter told me today that I am going to be a grandpa for the first time.

Happy Thanksgiving to Charles & everyone.

Researchok is right, there are so many things we have to be thankful for. Not only our freedoms and standard of living, but basic things good health, friendship, love.

This has been brought home to me by being here and seeing the losses & hardships some of you have gone through this year, which I haven’t forgotten.

Oh, and one other thing: I wish I was at Alouette’s house today because…PIES!

They’re 14 weeks now. We captured them when they were 5 weeks (they were feral). They’re turning into really loving, wonderful cats. They also have something to be thankful for. They get the chicken heart! (It’s just my wife and me this year, so a whole turkey is too much.)

It’s a good thing you caught them when you did; if they’d stayed with mom much longer there probably wouldn’t have been much hope of taming them. They are sooo adorable at that age. I hear you re the chicken. It’s just me this year, so I’m only doing turkey chops. ;o)

Oh, I forgot to mention, I don’t bake pie anymore. My mom and kids had an “intervention” while I was in LA for my dad’s funeral, told me I have to lose weight if I want to live to be 92 years old like my dad.

My daughter and I went swimming this morning!

We did get them just in time, and they’re quite tame. You wouldn’t know they were ever feral. And I’m definitely the chicken.

No more pies??? I’m crushed! That is SO not fair, but better you should live longer.

I supply the turkey for my sister to cook, along with at least one kosher breast for me. I prefer the kosher bird, but my brother-in-law has complained that there’s too much salt in it. This year, I went to [Link: www.greatharvestatlanta.com…] and picked up a stuffing bread and a Kentucky bourbon bread. I didn’t the the bourbon bread, but thought the stuffing bread was fantastic.

A friend of mine, whose fiance is presently serving the CDC in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, didn’t have anywhere to go, so I told him that if he didn’t I was going to take him to my sister’s place so he wouldn’t be alone today. I kept my word. He seemed to enjoy having people to spend the afternoon with my sister, her husband and my two nephews. I just felt he shouldn’t be alone today, so I invited him to come with me. My sister has had people come over who were not family over the years (she calls it “taking in strays”) and she didn’t mind having my friend there, especially if you consider she has the remains of a 22+ pound bird, “smashed taters,” stuffing, Cole’s Law (shredded cabbage) and the carcass.

I may take the time tomorrow to buy myself an organic kosher bird and try making that for myself in the future.
