They’re hard. Some are shiny. You don’t want to touch the melted ones.

Any more questions?

I’m not buying anything right now. In the last 24 hours I learned some new tricks of the retail trade. After the employees worked as hard as they could to get through the Thanksgiving rush, Kroger rewards us by cutting our weekly hours for the next three weeks.

They gave me 16 hours next week, even though my contract requires them to give me at least 20 hours a week. I mentioend it to the service manager yesterday, and her answer “I don’t make the schedule.” She’s the fucking service manager, she has the authority to do almost anything.

And on top of everything else, I was scheduled to work until 6:00pm yesterday, but things slowed down so much, she told me to go home at 5:00pm. Another hour lost.

That’s a complete bummer. At Thanksgiving yesterday, we had four families (five if you count my parents.) Two of the four have had to move in with relatives during this economy in an attempt to get by. Of my grandmother, my parents, and all my aunts and uncles, only one uncle hasn’t had younger families needing to move back for a time.

One family has finally gotten a real job and they think they can be back in their own house by Christmas.

I hate this economy. (Can we call it a depression now? Can we?)

Why does Obama hate frogs?

Image: 610x.jpg

A female Oregon spotted frog from the Owyhee Mountains of Southwestern Idaho, rests in the hand of a researcher in this undated file photo taken in Idaho. Environmental groups are criticizing the Obama administration for what they say is a continuing backlog of plants and animals in need of protection under the Endangered Species Act. Many of the species listed as candidates for protection have been waiting for such a designation for decades, including the Oregon spotted frog, found in three West Coast states.

Ok… Lortone equipment sits a notch above the standard hobby grade stuff… but of course a few bucks more… I would suggest this model for a beginner…

[Link: www.firemountaingems.com…]

and the grit kit…

[Link: www.firemountaingems.com…]

This is going to set you back about 100 dollars, but, you may want to use this model number and look around the web, you may find it a a better price than the link I gave you. My like was to show you the unit, not necessarily to show you the best price. Just remember, you will always need the tumbler and the polish (grit) kit. Some tumblers come with the grits.

But, I’m just going to have to make this observation, just for the heck of it. Rock tumbling is like watching grass grow. You put a load of rocks and grits in the tumbler, tumbler 24/7 for 4-6 weeks, rinse and repeat 3 or 4 more times, using finer than finer grits, until the rocks gleam with a glass like polish.

During the time while the rocks are tumbling, the kid could get a college education.

Point? It’s really a boring, time consuming hobby with not much “action” between the occasional hands on parts.

No… rocks are rocks, grits are grits, and you are trying to replicate the effect of sand and water and erosion that usually takes thousands of years.

Commercial tumblers take just as long, the only difference, they tumbler a few hundred pounds of rocks at a time (instead of 1-3 pounds for a table top tumbler)… and then may have 5 or 6 tumblers working in tandem, so their final output, day after days, month after month, is greater… and the stuff is sold wholesale to rock shops and the such.

If they’ve lasted decades waiting to be listed, maybe they don’t need the list so much. My brother has discovered species of frogs that were extinct before he got the DNA sequenced and found out they were a distinct species. These were victims of the chytrid fungus in Panama.

You could spend about 1500-2000 dollars an lapidary equipment, and cut and polish rocks like I do… you could cut and polish a stone in under an hour.

Of course, just kidding, just making a point, a tumbler is a slow and hands off, no skill needed, production way of polishing rocks.

He will be more “thrilled” to have an electric, unless he has some sort of crush on folk music. Get a under 100 dollar fender Squire strat, try Musicians Friend online or Guitar City stores… around this time of year, you can find a Fender Squire and a small 1 watt practice amp for around 100.

Never release frogs or tadpoles into any location other than that from which they came. Hey PT, ask RWC, I’m a rock hound. I’ve been collecting since I was old enough to start walking and our living room has rocks all over the place.
Rock Tumblers are cool but they pull a lot of electricity, and they can take a lot of time to make the rocks look smooth and polished. I had one as a kid and I was always opening it to see the rocks, I never had enough patience for it to work. There’s a really good book that I love you could get her, its called “Gemstones of the World” By Walter Schumann. It’s got a lot of real cool color pictures and great info on gemstones, including where they come from and what their made from. You can also get rock sample kits that have some beautiful tumbled stones in it.

Last fall I took the kids up to a quarry that my husband and his buddy had been using for shooting. Mr.EmmmieG had told me that the government had dumped a mountain of rocks there. (It was a very big pile.) I drove up with the kids and we had a blast climbing over it and picking out rocks with quartz in them. Even found a little bit of amethyst.

Brought them back for geology class, where we hit them with hammers (with goggles, of course) to learn about fracture and cleavage.

Good times, and no patience needed.

I love frog legs. When we were kids, there was a pond behind our property loaded with bullfrogs. We’d take a .22 and pop about thirty of those suckers, leg ‘em out, and have a big feast once or twice a year. (There were also lots of large mouth bass who loved frog torsos, so they didn’t go to waste - though the big frogs were way too big for the bass).
