Sarah Palin’s North Korea Gaffe: A Mistake?

Politics • Views: 35,925

The most telling part of Sarah Palin’s “North Korea” gaffe is that no one knows whether it was a simple slip of the tongue or another brain fart revealing massive ignorance.

When asked by Beck how she would handle a situation like the one that was developing in North Korea, Palin responded: “This is stemming from, I think, a greater problem when we’re all sitting around asking, ‘Oh no, what are we going to do,’ and we’re not having a lot of faith that the White House is going to come out with a strong enough policy to sanction what it is that North Korea is going to do.”

It is unclear whether Palin is talking about sanctions against North Korea, or U.S. sanctioning — i.e. approving or supporting — its actions.

Palin continued: “Obviously, we gotta stand with our North Korean allies,” when Beck interrupted and corrected her to say “South Korea.”

“And we’re also bound by prudence to stand with our South Korean allies, yes,” she responded.

Unbelievably pathetic. My opinion: she is seriously confused about the difference between North and South Korea. I don’t believe this was just a slip-up.

Palin, meanwhile, responded to the criticism by attacking President Obama, apparently believing that pointing out someone else’s mistakes is an excuse for her own stupidity: A Thanksgiving Message to All 57 States.

As you read this amazingly venal rant designed to divert attention from her own glaring error, remember that this is a woman who wants to be President of the US.

Interesting discussion at my parents' for Thanksgiving.

None of the conservatives in the room (and we were all conservatives because my cousin shattered her wrist and had to stay home) would vote for Palin for the nomination.

It seems that it is all Obama and the "lamestream" media's fault that she is a moron.

The victim, she is always the fucking victim.

I think she's of average intelligence at best, and is severely misinformed, but this is exactly the kind of verbal slip people commonly make.

Heh, my 84 year old mom told me it was impolite to speak of Palin in the negative, paused and remarked at what an idiot she was.

To Palin's credit, as of 2 years ago, she was uncertain why there were 2 Korea's. So now she knows there are 2 and I can see why it's easy to confuse the good one with the bad one.

The quasi leader of the Tea Party movement has emerged as a powerful force in the conservative movement, and she is making her presence known.

From appearing on Dancing with the Stars to cheer on her daughter, Bristol, to her multiple appearances on Fox News and 16-city book tour, Palin's actions have fueled much speculation about a possible presidential run in 2012.

If they were talking about a country I don't care about, that would be a hysterical excerpt. All it needs is "half-governor" inserted right after "quasi leader".

Unfortunately, it seems they couldn’t resist the temptation to turn a simple one word slip-of-the-tongue of mine into a major political headline.

A 'major headline?' It was here and maybe a few other blogs, but how much play did this get in the 'lamestream media?' I never saw or heard of it.

I can see why it's easy to make a verbal typo.

However, even the most rudimentary knowledge of the Korean war would make it easy to remember that the "bad" Korea is the one right next to China, because of the importance of China and its military in the conflict.

19 Gus  Fri, Nov 26, 2010 10:22:44am

Another thing too is that this gaffe seemed to have already passed. Sarah Palin has now managed to fan the flames and bring this back in the forefront possibly even more than it was out front before. If she kept quiet it would have been largely forgotten. But, it's in her nature to retaliate at every little criticism -- she is indeed very thin skinned.

re: #15 jaunte

I've seen this reaction frequently and mysteriously transmuted into the idea that 'liberals fear Palin.'

That accusation always made me laugh. I don't fear her. I hold her in contempt. She sets women -- even other Republican women -- back decades with her nonsense.

She can't handle the heat in Alaska, so she quits in a naked cash grab. How does that help reinforce the idea that women can competently run states or hold higher office again? She gets caught in a gaffe here, so she deflects by attacking the President. She's too stupid or uninformed to answer questions, so she hides behind her handlers and blames the "lamestream" media (i.e., everyone except herself) for her problems.

There are plenty of smart, capable women who find that sort of shit insulting, since if they did that at work, they'd lose all credibility. For some reason, though, the rubes who follow this grifter find it endearing. What. The. Fuck.

21 okonkolo  Fri, Nov 26, 2010 10:27:00am

If her skin is this thin this far away from a serious campaign, she's going to be blood red before the first primary. What a childish, petty post, doubly so for Thanksgiving.

I happened to catch a snippet of her TLC show, and she was saying that she gets up at 4am so she can catch up on the days news so she can offer commentary. My thought was if the best she can do with the Korean situation is to say we need to stand by our [South] Korean allies, then she may as well stay in bed. Anyone can come up with that.

That Fox News thinks such commentary is worth paying her millions is rather pathetic. I could say the same thing for far less.

True. If Palin followed her first link she'd see that the clip of Obama mis-speaking 57 states had gotten 2.7 million youtube hits, so she's wrong when she claims special media victimhood by saying this:

If you can’t remember hearing about them, that’s because for the most part the media didn’t consider them newsworthy.

Everyone's gaffes get reported on as newsworthy. Obama's are relatively minimal. Biden's are major and are subject of jokes by late-night comics. Palin surpasses Biden in gaffes and comes off as not just occasionally mis-speaking, but proudly ignorant about policy and world events.

Tape recording

They are specifically talking about a phone answering machine. The article is badly written. You are correct, there were wire recording machines that early on, and tape was available during he war, but I think the article writer is trying to say that Bell Labs squelched the idea of a phone answering machine (that used tape), because of the effect it could have had on people recording phone calls and causing a decline in the use of phones by people afraid that their conversations would be recorded without their knowledge.

I think that's what was the authors point, not well laid out.

I think what the author was trying to drive at was that AT&T was paranoid about Bell Labs developing that tech (and other tech that potentially threatened their core businesses), as BigPapa and Walter said. Other companies did popularize magnetic tape and, later, answering machines, but AT&T wasn't gonna do it.

re: #66 Walter L. Newton

You're probably right, but the author strongly implies that this was the invention of magnetic recording itself and that Bell's decision suppressed the invention for years. In fact, the first magnetic tape machines (using steel tape) were marketed in Germany in 1935, as reasonable a lead time as anyone could want. The likely reason the answering machine didn't arrive sooner was that it was just too difficult and expensive with vacuum tube or early solid state technology. This would be analogous to facsimile machines, invented in the early 1900s, but not widely available to consumers until the 80s. Before that, newspapers and government organizations with a compelling need used fax machines, but the requirement for trained operators and constant maintenance put consumer use out of the question.

75 Shiplord Kirel  Fri, Nov 26, 2010 11:21:19am

re: #69 BigPapa

I think the premise was more about the potential of the technology was hindered by a conspiracy of the few, notably AT&T wonks, due to a little paranoia about how the technology might cause unintended consequences to the use of their other technologies.

Since Bell ran essentially the whole phone system in those days, it's likely they didn't want to be a party to anything that would look like clandestine recording of phone conversations. The technology itself was fairly obvious and was quickly introduced by others. The whole theme of the article is that this decision delayed the advance of technology on a broad front for many years, which simply isn't true.

He did seem to imply it, though he never stated it.

I think his point was that technology advancement can be suppressed due to narrow avenues under risk of influence by a powerful few (paranoid AT&T businessmen, in this instance).

Read up on the history of encryption in computing and the laws regarding it. If ever there were a perfect example of miserably failed attempts at suppressing technologies, that would be it.

At some point in the not-too-distant future, I think we will look back at the way patent laws applied to algorithms in the early part of the 21st century, and wonder wtf we were smoking.

87 Fozzie Bear  Fri, Nov 26, 2010 11:53:18am

If you want to know a little more about how ridiculous software patent laws are, look at this recent suit filed by Paul Allen, formerly of Microsoft.

You see, Mr. Allen owns the patent on the concept of a “Browser for Use in Navigating a Body of Information, With Particular Application to Browsing Information Represented By Audiovisual Data.” and is suing the entire planet for royalties. Yeah, that's right, he owns the legal rights to much of the internet's basic underlying concept. He didn't design a mousetrap, he just described what a mousetrap was in extremely vague terms, and now wants everybody else who went anywhere near that extremely vague idea to pay him money.

Fucking. Ridiculous.

People should be enraged that people can just lay claim to extremely abstract ideas and stifle innovation with patent laws, but sadly, most people I think are unaware of the fact that you can now patent what amounts to math problems.

FoxNation.com Reposts Anti-Obama Article From The Onion, Doesn’t Mention It’s A Joke

Yes, the Fox Nation editors were apparently so enamored with an Onion piece from today entitled “Frustrated Obama Sends Nation Rambling 75,000-Word E-Mail” that they reposted the first two paragraphs in their culture section with nary a sign as to its fictional nature. The only clue that this wasn’t real (besides a quick peek at your inbox to confirm that Barack Obama hasn’t been emailing you) was a link at the bottom instructing readers to go to TheOnion.com for the real story. This tiny link was, unfortunately, not enough for the vast majority of FN readers. At least, that’s the way it seems from the comments section.

Looks like Fox's response was to eventually add "The Onion: " in front of the title. :P

I wrote it before, but this is really all I have to say about it.

Sarah Palin is that stupid. You can say it was just a gaffe, and perhaps it was, but to make the mistake in the first place, and not instantly catch it, is yet more proof of what others have claimed all along. When corrected, she doesn't even acknowledge it even today.

I really don't think that this was just a gaffe. If you listen to the interview, she is trucking along on her vague and ill defined fear mongering talking point, goes of script, and doesn't know what to say. Then her little brain froze you betcha. This is not the first time this has happened when she has gone off script, but perhaps, the most shocking.

I doubt sincerely Sarah could tell us much of anything about the two Koreas. If you asked her about Thailand's "border" with Korea, she would tell you that she is worried that Obama isn't doing enough about it.

The larger question that people should be asking is "is it really a good idea to give the most important and most demanding job in the world to someone who is just utterly stupid and clearly utterly unqualified to do it?"

Nevertheless, I have a really really hard time seeing Microsoft as a tech company. They're actually just an extraordinarily successful marketing firm. Can anyone point out any significant technology that MS actually created?

I don't know anything about Ms. Drescher but the criticism from the far left I see of Obama tends to be pretty ridiculous sometimes. Like, "How could you hire Summers and Geithner?" - which is pretty easy for a rational person to stave off.

No, Michael Moore, I do not someone who thinks like you at Treasury or Chief Econ Council. Please stay away and stick to documentaries but thanks anyway.

Slavery revisionism is no different in my mind than Holocaust revisionism. It is done by the same types of people for the same reasons. It is always to justify the worst evils and hatreds. It is the act of a mind that knows it is evil inventing a fantasy to justify its own evil.

They are what they are. I don't use any of their products personally, and haven't for years, because I think their software is horribly desgned. However, the Kinect has opened a wonderful pandora's box. The basic idea of a sensor cluser isn't even remotely new, but a dirt cheap one that actually has decent resolution is new.

I always thought that if Debbie Schlussel ever gained enough notoriety, Fran Drescher would be the perfect person to parody her, as Tina Fey did for Sarah Palin.

Circa late 2002, Debbie found her way onto the Howard Stern show from time to time. She would spew her spiel, and Artie Lange & Fred Norris would mock her relentlessly. There was one appearance just after 9/11 where she came on, and she & Stern talked about heavy-duty, not-even-trying-to-be-funny terrorism stuff for about half an hour. After they said their goodbyes and she hung up the phone, there was a brief moment of silence, then Stern said, "Oy vey - can you imagine being married to that?"

Do not tell me that you allowed your mom to buy a .38. Does anyone even make .38s anymore?

Hints from Helouise: a .357 revolver can fire .38 rounds. .38 cal ammo is typically less powerful (and weirdly, more expensive) than 9mm.

You might be able to stick full-house 357s into a pistol chambered for .38, but you'd do so only at your extreme peril.

You can read the 16th century witch-hunter's handbook on line. It's obviously absurd, ridiculous, and stupid, and it sent thousands of women and men (but mostly women) to their agonizing deaths.

Try to imagine the mind of the person who thought up the position of "Witch Pricker". The rocket scientists of the day believed that a witch would not feel pain or bleed when their skin was pierced. So the witch pricker's job was to jab holes all over the accused "witch" until he found a spot that didn't bleed. Obviously, it was often very exacting work to pinpoint (as it were) the exact location of the non-bleeding witch's mark.

Also keep in mind that this went on for centuries, and people were pretty much okay with it.

Second- remember the outrageous outrage over Obama's comment regarding "my muslim religion"? To having them move in.

No.

To extend the metaphor, drawing from my own experience with in-laws, it should also be considered that the aforementioned inlaws also have a kid who is apparently fed nothing but castor oil, and is clothed exclusively in the most loose-fitting, comically inadequate diapers imaginable.

Cue wingnut bigotry about Obama's lip size in 3..2..1..

A Thanksgiving weekend basketball game mishap Friday left President Barack Obama with a split lip and 12 stitches.

I'm sure Sarah Palin will have kind words as well.

But from me, I just want to say, "Good for you, Mr. President. Way to get in there and fight for the ball. Now just be that aggressive on DADT, tax cuts, etc. with the Republicans." McConnell and Boehner are pussies, and they will back down.

241 palomino  Fri, Nov 26, 2010 2:43:18pm

She's a bundle of resentment. At Obama for beating her and not wasting time thinking about her. And at the MSM for exposing her shallowness and shocking ignorance.

The last major politician this thin-skinned, paranoid and vindictive was probably Nixon. Remember how well that worked out? And he was at least smart, so she would be an even bigger disaster.

I can see why it's easy to make a verbal typo.

However, even the most rudimentary knowledge of the Korean war would make it easy to remember that the "bad" Korea is the one right next to China, because of the importance of China and its military in the conflict.

The problem is that most people don't have that rudimentary knowledge. Historical ignorance in America is astonishing.

They act entitled, which is not a sign of strength. They have the power, yes, to make things happen, but they don't have the strength or the intellect to realize that working with the Democrats would actually help their own causes. Their "my way or the highway" attitude and refusal to support anything the President wants is, in fact, another sign of just how weak they are - that they are afraid of giving an inch for it would make them (in their own pathetic minds) look even weaker. Downding me all you want. That doesn't change the facts. Peace.

It’s cute that they’re pretending that they’re not sure who elbowed him even though we all know who did it. You learned a lesson today the hard way, champ: When you drive the lane on Hillary, you come strong or don’t come at all.

(The weird thing about trooferism is that there just can't be a link between it and ODS, because because Obama wasn't elected till after 9/11, so why is tooferism so popular on the right all of a sudden?

A big part of the troofer disease is hating the gov't for being part of a shadowy cabal, like the Illuminati or something, that is hell bent on enslaving us all beneath a cruel, totalitarian regime.

Consider the kind of rhetoric spewed at our current POTUS, and you can see how both dovetail quite nicely.

He just got re-elected, and he has already announced that this is his last term. Given those facts, he can speak as he wishes, and he has never had anything but contempt for Troofers. The really interesting thing will be if the Troofers go after Rudy Guiliani. They're dumb enough to try it, but if they do they'll meet a stunning repulse.

John McCain isn't a joke, he's sad. He's a lesson about what it means to really just give up everything you stood for in the quest for power and fame, then lose. He sees his only recourse as ignoring what he's become and stubbornly sticking to his guns.

I'll believe Jon McCain isn't just an empty shell when he owns up to the fact that the military leaders and to judge by the report, by and large the military itself is in favor of repealing DADT and either votes in favor of it, or at least admits to the fact that he's changed his mind for some reason that he then goes onto explain in reasonable detail even if it is just "I am personally uncomfortable with the idea of gays serving openly" because then he's AT LEAST being honest with us....

On the subject of Palingraffes, C&L has an article up about Esther's Thanksgiving day interview with Greta:

Palin rips Obama for not using 'all this vacation time' to visit ANWR

At around 00:16 Esther says that TAPS provides around 20% of US domestic "energy".

Wrong.

TAPS does provide a significant amount of US domestic oil. But in this country coal is just as important to oil, and there are several other energy sources (natural gas, hydro.)

TAPS btw is in trouble because Alaskan petroleum production peaked some time ago and the minimum flow level is being reached for TAPS. It's a big Alaska story, as the loss of TAPS would mean the loss of the juicy dividend all Alaskans get.

And the TAPS problem is even worse... because of Sarah Palin. While governor she signed a bill that makes it less attractive financially for the operators of TAPS.

This is an under-reported story that ought to be pushed hard.

Esther is talking out of both sides of her gaffe-prone mouth.

But, as Charles pointed out, one never knows if its really a gaffe or not, as with the "energy" statement.

I am pretty confident that Palin doesn't, and didn't, know that "sanction" can be taken two ways. The only way she'd know about that word would be in connection with "sanctions", that is, penalties imposed by some body on some target.

Going from that premise, it stands to reason that her slip of tongue really was a slip of tongue. In the same breath, almost, she complains that Obama does not have a strong enough policy to `sanction' North Korea.

The whole sentence makes no sense at all unless `sanction' is meant as a verbification of "impose sanctions". Going by strict grammatical English, a habit of which Palin has never previously been accused, the sentence is just a word hash. It doesn't fit with what everybody knows about this hoorah, which is that NK shelled SK and that Obama said he was outraged.

Going by the guess that Palin made a for her unremarkable grammatical error, or just spoke informally, and said "sanction" as shorthand for "impose sanctions", she knew which side was which and misspoke in the next sentence because the word "North" was still on her mind from the previous sentence. On top of that, there's the fact that when the moderator corrected her, this didn't slow her down one whit.

Sarah Palin knows which is which, when it comes to North Korea and South Korea. To suggest that she does not is to overstate the case for her incompetence. The audience in the middle gives more weight to arguments that proceed by careful steps, giving the benefit of doubt to the accused and then convicting them anyhow.

John McCain has frittered away a lot of the respect I had for him through his conduct since the 2008 elections, but I certainly hope he tells "Judge" Napalitano and the GOP Troofers to stick it where the sun don't shine...

She thought Africa was a country. What makes you think anybody is underestimating her?

I did explain how the many reasons fitted together. A lot of people who know better misspeak. Does anyone seriously think that Obama really didn't know how many states the U.S. has? Or maybe, far more likely, he was tired and the thought of steak drifted through his mind and with it, Heinz 57 sauce, and the words fifty seven just slipped out.

He knew better.

Palin HAS to have heard about the NKSK incident. Since she brought it up, she has to have heard about Obama's reaction. And she thought it wasn't a strong enough policy to "sanction" NK.

No one would use that phrase if what they meant was they wanted Obama to back NK.

She's not presidential timber. There are many reasons why that is so, but this minor gaffe does not make the top ten. As to making it newsworthy, she cannot afford to let stand, unchallenged, the assertion that it wasn't a gaffe and that she doesn't know who's who in Korea.

Palin being a dangerously ignorant and misinformed grifter is far more of a reason to keep her the hell away from the White House and the nuke codes. However, a real presidential candidate doesn't rant on Facebook about a perceived slight. They put on their big girl panties and deal with it like an adult.

As to making it newsworthy, she cannot afford to let stand, unchallenged, the assertion that it wasn't a gaffe and that she doesn't know who's who in Korea.

It's the Thanksgiving holiday season. People are with their families and friends, watching football and eating turkey, and today, they all went bargain shopping. She could have let the story die a natural death because nobody's paying a damn bit of attention anyway.

She should have kept her mouth shut. Any sensible and/or politically savvy PR person could have told her that.

It's so funny....I was listening to a local right wing radio show in the car the other day here in Tampa. The host actually said the founders never intended for our government to be run by lawyers and intellectuals, neglecting the fact that they were all lawyers and intellectuals. The ignorance is mind bottling.

If you want to know how much respect the founders had for "the common man," one need look no further than the Electoral College.
