The Oregon Terror Plot That Never Was

US News • Views: 35,435

A 19-year old naturalized US citizen born in Somalia has been arrested in Oregon, in a plot to blow up a car bomb at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

But he was never even close to actually carrying out the plot; the FBI has been on to him for more than a year, and the “car bomb” was stocked with mock explosives. I wonder how the right wing blogs will turn this into a defeat for the Obama administration?

Notice how they became aware of his activities….

According to an arrest warrant affidavit written by an FBI special agent, Mohamud was in e-mail communication in August 2009 with a person believed to be involved in terrorist activities. In December, that person was “located in the northwest frontier province of Pakistan,” the affidavit states.

The two communicated regularly, the affidavit states, and “using coded language, they discussed the possibility of Mohamud traveling to Pakistan to prepare for violent jihad.”

They were almost certainly using the Patriot act provision that allows wiretapping of US citizens when the other end of the conversation is overseas. OMG! Wireetapping citizens!

Good thing so many of these terrorists are stupid and unsuccessful. Still scary that this guy was trying to kill innocent people.

They won’t go after Obama immediately. They’ll say “KILLER BLACK MUSLIMS ARE OUT TO IMPOSE SHARIA!!1” And when Obama refuses to overreact to their “ELEVENTY!!1” rhetoric, they’ll say he will not do so because “HE’S A SEKRIT MOOSLIM!!!11”. That way they can give Pam the Shrieking Harpy and the Nirthers their fodder at the same time.

Putting myself in those people’s shoes makes my feet feel so dirty. /

I am only guessing but some of those members of the “right” wing will say that this person should have never been naturalized. I personally do not see how America can prevent that. America has welcomed people from all over; if we were to stop that this country will be a much poorer place. I for one do not want that to happen.

Clearly since Obama’s FBi has known about this for more than a year and they waited till a Christmas tree lighting ceremony to thwart this terrorist, this is further evidence of the Liberal Attack on Christmas (LAC™).

Happy Holidays!

re: #1 Killgore Trout

Turns out a local tipped the FBI off about him. From the NYTimes:

The official said agents began investigating Mohamud after receiving a tip from someone who was concerned about the teenager. The official declined to provide any more detail about the relationship between Mohamud and that source.

The FBI monitored Mohamud’s e-mail. They found that he was in e-mail contact with people overseas and was asking how he could travel to Pakistan and join the fight for jihad, according to an FBI affidavit.

Mohamud, a student at Oregon State University, e-mailed a friend living in Pakistan who had been a student in Oregon in 2007-2008, according to the official. The FBI’s affidavit says the friend in Pakistan referred him to another associate, but gave him an invalid e-mail address that Mohamud tried repeatedly to use unsuccessfully. The official said FBI agents saw that as an opportunity and e-mailed Mohamud in response, claiming to be associates of his friend, the former student.

This Somali guy got started young, so maybe she can tie it in with yesterday’s screed* warning about Muslim schoolchildren attending Christian schools in Europe. Apparently they’re dangerous agents of Islamic supremacism.

The wingnuts don’t seem to have any compunctions about going after children these days (Obama’s daughters & TSA, WBC protesting children’s funerals, etc.), so I wouldn’t put it past them to go after Muslim kids as well.

Hot Air is fear-mongering like crazy over this incident, of course. Mocking the FBI for calling it an isolated incident (even though they’ve been tracking the guy since August 2009 and would certainly know if it wasn’t), and telling their already crazed readers that terrorists are out to get them and might strike anywhere at any time.

Not even a hint of appreciation that law enforcement stopped this guy before he even got started.

And that’s why they’ll use conspiracy theories. The mainstream GOP will briefly praise the FBI and move on, but the wingnuts will try to find some anti-Obama angle, and they’ll try to draw the rest of the party their way with the anti-immigrant hook.

Geller has remarkably bad taste in friends.

Mr. Seselj, who in the past would sometimes brandish a pistol at fellow politicians, also sent a verbal message from the courtroom. “Destiny, history, did not allow me to come to power on time,” he said. “If I had, everything would have been different.”

…Wow, what kind of complex network would it take for a Somalia-born US citizen to envision, develop, and then carry out such a huge and complex attack in a large public place with so many innocents gathered? Why, of course, one enabled by the FBI….

I don’t read FDL, so I don’t know whether there’s any sarcasm or satire here, or whether it’s just outrageous outrage.

…How long are we going to let the cowboys shoot up our country with their false terror plots and operations that would go nowhere without their instigation, planning, and coercion? How long will we allow our own federal constabulary to justify its own recklessly inflated budget by permitting actions like this to develop, fester, and grow operational in our midst?

This is terror, pure and simple. State-sponsored terror. Big-splash terror designed to make people compliant and fearful, and grateful to their federal government — in a city which has not yet installed the Rapiscan porno-scanners at our airport.

Someone needs to put an end to it.

This is just a recycled talking point. Several of the previous terror plots in the US had major governmental logistics support as part of the sting operation. In this case it seems like the only things the feds did was to take his bomb components and return a “bomb”, unlike several previous cases where the feds have apparently supplied everything from the target to the the weapon.

My knowledge of such things is fairly shallow. How do you envision PGP being helpful in this case? With any public/private key encryption, the weak point is the key exchange. How would someone seeking to communicate with a stranger authenticate that stranger? Seems to me that if the kid wanted to use PGP, the FBI would have happily supplied him with their pubilc key.

I didn’t mention the TP, nor did I say that WBC has any support within it. A wingnut is a wingnut as far as I’m concerned.

Urban Dictionary:

1. wingnut
n. An outspoken, irrational person with deeply-held, nominally conservative, political views. A person who chooses on principle to be flagrantly ignorant. A “right-wing nut”.
Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and Fred Phelps are examples of the wingnut element in modern America.

To the most extreme wingnuts, LEOs and the military seem to be convenient political pawns, useful only until they interfere with their quest for political power. They say they support LEOs/the miltary, until they fall for the black helicopter crap…then, LEOs/the military become the enemy.

Phelps is consumed by hatred alright, and ruined his children and their children with his irrational beliefs, but I don’t think there’s any political alignment there. Don’t look now but the Hot Air minions are now complaining about the DOJ domain seizures of piracy websites. It was posted by Allahpundit Allahdunce and of course they took the lead from lead truther site, Drudge Report. AP ups the paranoia by including this little conspiracy:

The potential problem with COICA, then, is that by codifying a “too much piracy” test, it might encourage the feds to expand the hazy standard they’re already basically using.

HotAir? Try the acrid, open racism spewing forth on Michelle Malkin’s blog, and even on Ann Althouse, who I thought of as having some sense of decency.

Or maybe, don’t try it.

Except the Democrats are mostly moderates, and are only seen as leftist by people who are so far right they fell off the political landscape.

A lot of conservative democrats lost to teabagger nitwits, so the party has moved a little to the left, but that’s not the Democrat’s doing.

The left-left-left-left-left wing of the Democratic party is the Green Party. Its a whole other party.

Phelps is consumed by hatred alright, and ruined his children and their children with his irrational beliefs, but I don’t think there’s any political alignment there. He’s just about his own little wackjob cult. Geller may be the same, but at least pretends to be aligned with far-right monsters, so wingnut would seem to fit perfectly there.

Ah, I see where we’re differing. I guess I need to clarify: I don’t necessarily view the term wingnut as connoting a far-right political alignment (though I suspect most would lean that way). I guess my definition is more about the mindset & aggressive behavior, like this.

Very true, and something that republicans seem to be in denial about due to election results that have made them giddy and erect.

Congressional elections happen once every two years, but legislation like what just got passed happens only once every two generations. Republicans won big in the short term but they lost long term.

I am only guessing but some of those members of the “right” wing will say that this person should have never been naturalized. I personally do not see how America can prevent that. America has welcomed people from all over; if we were to stop that this country will be a much poorer place. I for one do not want that to happen.

There is an alternative: be selective about who immigrates. We can close our doors to people who hail from areas that are hotbeds of terrorism: Sri Lanka, Somalia, etc, while keeping out the welcome mat for those who show promise of making good citizens.

The foiling of this plot is a victory for everyone. Obama wins because it happened on his watch. And the fact that our law enforcement system worked as it did should make us all happy. More than anything else, the whole country wins.

But the 800 lb elephant in the room still looms large. Does anyone want to guess what that might be? And is our reluctance to discuss it frankly and honestly something we can afford to do?

It’s a tough conversation, but people of good will should be able to engage in it without being labeled as bigots. And that label is thrown around far too frequently for my taste. Sometimes it DOES apply, but not ALWAYS.

No beef from me, but look at the stakes in this game. You have to play the odds and try to be fair, without being stupid. So if the numbers tell you that certain groups may be more likely to engage in bad behavior, you really need to pay close attention. I agree that threats are everywhere and not confined to any single group. But if you were betting on a football game, you’d want the best intelligence possible to help you set the betting line and where you will put your money. Good points. On that note I highly recommend Four Lions which is now out in the US. Most of the slapstick stuff is in the trailer but it’s actually a very though provoking social commentary. Like most homegrown terrorists these guys are not really observant fundamentalists. Most of them are morons who latch on to the violent aspects of Islam to empower themselves because they feel inadequate and they find the bad ass aspects of Islam empowering. It’s one of the unique features of Islam. With Judaism, Christianity Buddhism, etc there isn’t much of a macho tradition for young men to latch on to.

Yes. Which is why we pay close attention to extremist Muslims, extremist anti-abortion activists, radical black separatists, white supremacists, etc. Those are the ‘groups’. The ‘group’ is not Muslims in general, or pro-life people in general. It is definitely true that thanks to the radical nature of Islam in the Middle East— in large part stemming from our allies, Saudi Arabia— Islamic terrorism is the largest international threat, and bears the most watching. But it should not and cannot occupy our full attention.

But if you were betting on a football game, you’d want the best intelligence possible to help you set the betting line and where you will put your money

Where are we failing at this?

I think in some respects, our foreign policy is not making this situation better. I believe that we need to be willing to fuck with some people. But I think our President can only plead for diplomacy up to a point. After that, he needs to kick somebody’s ass to show the bad guys he has the cojones to do it. After he kicks some strategically important butt, he can bargain better because the bad guys know he’s not afraid to drop the hammer. I like the drone strategy and agree it should continue, but we need to keep the heat on in other ways so we never look timid.

With Judaism, Christianity Buddhism, etc there isn’t much of a macho tradition for young men to latch on to.

Well, I’d somewhat disagree, historically. There is an enormous historical tradition of Christians being conquerers, warriors, and violent persecutors of heretics. The secular revolution of the Enlightenment is what sapped that from Christianity. Why the Enlightenment didn’t penetrate the Middle East is a complex story, but I don’t feel it’s one that can be blamed largely on Islam’s resitance; the political power structures were what resisted.

re: #134 Obdicut

President Obama is probably doing as much ass-kicking as he can without pissing off major powers/allies. The drone strikes in Pakistan are a touchy issue for many as it does involve violating Pakistan’s sovereignty, even though they don’t have any kind of real control over that region. The government there might not mind such strikes, but the people most likely do, and if such strikes were to be expanded past that area, it’s going to cause major headaches for pretty much everyone involved.

Granted, I’m not as up on the political situation in Pakistan as I probably should, but from what I can remember of the drone strikes, there have been protests by the Pakistani population at times over them (or my mind could be making that up).

For the Korean situation, diplomacy is the only route we can go with as unstable of a mindset as the entire NK regime is with access to nukes. Just got to hope SK doesn’t do anything rash and really inflame the NKs.

Diplomacy sucks, but it sure prevents a lot of massive headaches worldwide.

Remember, there’s a lot that is probably going on behind the scenes that we may never know until (1) someone spills the beans to the media or (2) well after a result from such actions are taken place. President Obama and his team probably have had talks with Turkey, but have kept much of the discussion matter quiet for politically sensitive reasons. Hell, a lot of diplomatic discussions are kept quiet for politically sensitive reasons and we don’t know about them. That’s why it seems like nothing is being done to the outsiders, while, for all we know, Obama’s on his 5th set of stitches because of all of the talking he’s been doing, either with his team or foreign diplomats.

Not everything can be solved quite simply. If we’re too aggressive in regards to Turkey, the Islamists would use that to fan the flames among the population and that would come to some big headaches to not only the US, but the entire region.

Palin is a figment of her own imagination, an hallucination imposed upon the writhing masses.

Oh, and the US did not defeat the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union defeated itself. When a nation spend 30%+ of its GDP on arms its economy is going to implode.

So yeah, those invasions were illegal.

Cargo plane with 8 on board crashes in Karachi, Pakistan

KARACHI, Pakistan — A cargo plane crashed into a residential area of Pakistan’s largest city soon after takeoff Sunday, setting off a huge blaze. The aircraft had eight crew on board, the civil aviation authority said,

Casualties on the ground appeared likely.

An Associated Press reporting team at the scene said several buildings were on fire and loud explosions were being heard. The plane came down in a housing complex for Naval officers, the reporters said.

Aviation authority spokesman Pervais George said the Russian-made cargo plane was heading to Sudan when it came down two minutes after take off. He said he could not confirm any information on casualties.

Mudflats

I read Palin’s book so u don’t have to - Chapter 1, Part 1 (aka the first half of the crap sandwich) [Link: bit.ly…] #p2 #palin #books

That link was brilliant. Hilarious blow-by-blow account of the first 17 pages of Palin’s book. Example:

“It is a hideous conservative screed, punctuated with “like my Dad used to say” or “I remember when I was a little girl and…” just to make you think it’s plausible that it might have been written by her, if you allowed yourself to believe for one flat second that she’s ever even remotely thought about anything contained in this chapter.

O, ye who doubt that the intellectually curious mind of Sarah Palin was pondering and researching the demise of the Soviet Union as a new mother with an infant baby … read on.

Page 1 – When she was elected Governor, a friend gave her a picture of Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. It hung on her office wall when she was in Juneau, and today it hangs on her office wall in Wasilla. “Call it corny, but Mr. Smith is one of my favorite movies.”
[Hmmm. I don’t remember the part where Jefferson Smith quit halfway through his term, and traveled the country making millions in a book deal and promoting divisiveness. But thanks for ruining the movie for me anyway.]”

Here’s a proposal as to how to conduct such a discussion. Don’t discuss “a religion”. Discuss political religion. Political Islam is a huge threat to peace. Much more so than political Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism etc., although they all suck. Just don’t touch personal Islam, personal Christianity, personal Judaism, etc. - religions as they’re practiced by individuals. There isn’t much difference between them on this level anyway.

231 Max  Sat, Nov 27, 2010 4:29:55pm

Funny how both militant Muslims and Christians want to destroy America and build a theocracy by attacking the country on Obama’s watch.

Kudos to the FBI. I wasn’t in Portland that evening, but had some friends that were there. The man was obviously determined to kill Americans. I guess coming here from Somali to live under America’s freedom and be educated with my tax dollars wasn’t good enough. F**k him. Trail him and if guilty, execute him.I only feel sorry for his parents and the Oregon Somalian community. People will paint the community with a broad brush.

Good grief.

And the obligatory spasm of hate (story from The Oregonian):

A fire reported early this morning at the Salman Alfarisi Islamic Center in Corvallis where Portland bomb plot suspect Mohamed Osman Mohamud sometimes attended is being called arson.

The fire was reported at about 2:15 a.m. today. Corvallis Fire Department spokeswoman Carla Pusateri said the fire was intentionally set, but would not say what led investigators to the conclusion.
