From WSJ.com:

Sean-Paul Correll, a Los Angeles-based researcher at software firm Panda Security, says the effort is a loose-knit group that uses servers hosted in Russia, but that there is no reason to believe that is where the individuals are based. He added that the group appeared to be able to corral thousands of computers, which are then used to bombard servers of a target Web site with data.

They might be using other countries site to hide where they are. I am just guessing. I do not understand how a trace is done on the internet.

re: #89 yasharki

In fact I think this whole bruhaha about MasterCard/Visa/PayPal/Amazon being attacked by some legendary botnet is a PR campaign, I've been pinging mastercard.com with MTU sized packets for past 10 hours, and haven't missed a single packet yet, where's the DOS?

You really just can't accept that supporters of Wikileaks are resorting to illegal tactics, can you?

re: #91 Dark_Falcon

North Aurora, is it? I wonder if that fellow commutes. If so, perhaps I could have a talk with him. And by talk I mean curse him out as the delinquent little shit that he is.

It's an A class address, meaning you're looking at 2^24 addresses registered with ARIN as a single entity, you can't nail it down to an individual unless you have access to comcast's customer database, chill with North Aurora :)

Thank you for the explanation.

[Link: www.dnsstuff.com...]

The Whois info, is info supplied by the people registering the ip, The address given won't necessarily reflect an actual street address.

I will go with:
Oak Avenue, Aurora, IL

Please let it be known I have nothing against the good people in North Aurora.

Where did you come up with Oak Avenue?

None of this really means much anyway.

Well checking the properties of the PDF, seems that the creator of the doc disabled: Document assembly, commenting, signing and creation of template pages.

Gee - what happened to keeping all of the data on the web Open Source?

Gone are the days when one could aquire IP range for personal use, ARIN/RIPE/APNIC are only issuing class A or B address ranges to countries, companies, or institutions large enough to fit their requirements. There's no way you can nail someone down to a street address based on their IP address unless you gain access to their internet service provider's customer database...

See, this is where I disagree. You are calling for censorship.

I'm against it. Fair or foul.

Bullshit...what's going on now with Anonymous and other WL "supporters" hacking Visa, MC, SarahPAC, and ABC News (among others) isn't free speech, it's (at best) malicious vandalism.

Agreed - and I'm (mostly) on the side that thinks the wikileaks issue is akin to the Pentagon Papers.

106 Slumbering Behemoth Stinks  Wed, Dec 8, 2010 7:28:06pm

So if theft and vandalism now qualify as "free speech", where does assault and battery and indecent exposure fall? Freedom of Expression? Right to Assemble?

This is important, because I really need to know exactly what constitutional rights of mine are being violated by the police the next time they haul me in for stripping down nekkid and beating the snot out of someone.

Chances are the news pieces about supposed "hackings" are bullshit to begin with. First of all hacking implies gaining unauthorized administrative access to a protected system in question, which DOS is not. Second of all, where's the proof? Where are logs proving any of allegedly affected sites were unresolvable, unroutable, or unreachable during last 48 hours? Where are snapshots of defacements, where is any proof whatsoever?

I disagee. For men the cardinal difference relates to names: Daniel Ellesburg went to a great deal of trouble to make sure he was not leaking the names of civilians who had aided US forces in Vietnam and that he did not release information that could put American soldiers in danger. Julian Assange has taken no such care. He only cares about what he wants, not for the lives of others.

Aha, got it. The inner frame is supposed to open this link:

a.abcnews.go.com/images/Politics/ht_wikileaks_1012 08.pdf?SITE=ABCNEWS

I.e. a PDF with the text we see on the screenshot. Be careful, PDFs may contain viruses.

In Adobe Reader:
Edit>Preferences>JavaScript> uncheck "enable acrobat javascript"
Internet> uncheck "display pdf in browser"

I believe that helps.

Isn't it easier to disable acrobat plugin/activex, disassociate pdf content-type, or better yet right click on a link and save it?

That IP is probably from a compromised computer which is part of a botnet. It's been reported that's how the DDoS attacks were waged against the Mastercard site. Botnets can be controlled extremely securely, making them a weapon of choice for someone targeting high-profile targets.

Securely in terms of difficulty in identifying bonnet's puppet master, but not in purely technical sense, overwhelming majority of bots are controlled via unencrypted channels, mostly because of potential load encryption would put on controlling host[s]. It's the anonymity they provide, and sheer volume of potential to generate traffic that make botnets a weapon of choice for performing denial of service attacks.

Interesting. I dled the PDF. It's a screenshot from some terminal. But there is an IP visible on the screenshot - 67.184.69.249

Ping:

il? Israel?

It's a comcast address, in illinois.
