‘Muslims for Bush’ Founder Disgusted by GOP Bigotry, Switches Parties

Politics • Views: 26,200

The extreme right wing nativism and bigotry embraced by the mainstream Republican Party is beginning to have real consequences. In Colorado, an influential long-time Republican, Muhammad Ali Hasan, who founded the organization “Muslims for Bush” and was a regular on Fox News, is fed up with the fetid racism of the GOP and is switching parties.

Hasan said he felt alienated between national Republican leaders on one side railing against the so-called “Ground Zero Mosque” and gays and illegal immigrants and, on the other, state Republican delegates convinced that as a candidate for treasurer he was angling to install sharia finance laws. He said the GOP convention in May was a low point.

“You experience bigotry sometimes but I often just think it’s probably my personality that the person doesn’t like. At the convention, though, that was the first time I felt the real thing. It was the worst experience of my life.”

Hasan suspects a whisper campaign swept the convention, sounding a warning against placing a Muslim in charge of investing the state’s revenues.

“Some goons were telling people that there’s a passage in the Koran that encourages Muslims to lie, that lying is considered a good thing in the service of advancing a Muslim or sharia agenda. I don’t know who was behind the rumor, but I’ve read the Koran, and I don’t know what they were talking about.” …

He said the weekend of the convention he watched hundreds of supporters fall away. Delegate after delegate approached him and mentioned the Koran and said in so many words that they weren’t sure they could trust him.

“It hurt. People who had said they were voting for me were now coming up to me and saying ‘You know, I hear you could be lying to us.’ I was shocked. I got the courage to approach some of them, people I had talked to and who said they were voting for me. Here they were wearing J.J. Ament stickers. I was like, you know, wow, and they said ‘But how do I know you’re not going to assert some form of sharia law against Colorado?’”

Hasan said he was deflated after talking to one woman at length.

“I told her I started Muslims for Bush. I’m proud of that. I told her I have been a vocal fiscal conservative for years. I said I’ve given to Republican candidates on the federal and state level. I helped get Republican candidates elected to House seats in 2008 when Democrats were winning everything… Finally I asked her ‘There’s nothing I can say to win your vote because my name is Muhammad, am I right?’ and she said ‘Yeah, that’s probably right.’”

Back at election time, we had some fun ridiculing Oklahoma’s anti-Sharia law. Some were wondering just how such a bizarre idea could make it onto the ballot.
Truth is, these things don’t just pop up out of nowhere. They can spread to every hamlet in the country and take on the aura of hard fact almost without the reality-based community noticing. Besides the internet, talk radio, and the various tea party organizations, they do this through a loose-knit but pervasive network of fundamentalist groups. These networks are also the glue holding together the campaigns to teach creationist superstition in public schools, to condemn gays and so on.
As someone noted a couple of years ago, it is almost an underground counterculture. It does nothing to conceal itself, quite the opposite, but it is somehow not taken seriously by major media and other mainstream cultural interests. This really has to change, or we will end up wondering how President Palin or Huckabee managed to get into office.

I’m seeing a lot of these ideas getting a grip on perfectly reasonable people in my area who are Israel activists. It’s scary. These folks, BTW, are by and large registered Democrats, and social liberals. But they’re vulnerable to this as well. It’s a shanda.

I told her I have been a vocal fiscal conservative for years.

There is the big mistake - thinking that the GOP was the natural home for Fiscal Conservatives and that the other issues could be moved around. As the recent tax deal demonstrates aptly, the first thing one’s GOP tosses out out of the tent are Fiscal Conservatives.

I think if we needed any more proof that almost every current GOP support thinks any Muslim is a terrorist in disguise we just got it.

That’s got to be one of the most most fucked up, beyond paranoid statements I’ve ever heard. Sharia FINANCE law? REALLY? Does that mean if you don’t pay your taxes they come and stone you to death?

The worst thing about incidents like this, is that these groups try to pass themselves off as being shining examples of pure, uninhibited American patriotism. If they love their country so much why do they piss all over some of it’s most sacred values so easily?

I had the in-laws in a few weeks ago because they wanted to see my newborn son. I had to listen to crap like “there is no such thing as a peaceful muslim” for days and hold my tongue, to keep the peace until they were gone. Can’t have too much fighting when you have to concentrate on putting a baby to sleep.

I know it’s anecdotal evidence, but I was really wondering to myself what had become of America. These were two elderly citizens, pretty average, middle-class conservative folk with a Community of Christ background… I didn’t really expect such a high level of uninformed, ignorant bigotry.

There are two kinds of ficscal conservatives in the US, the kind that want a balanced budget and the kind that want low taxes. It can be difficult to tell one from the other.

The new yorker has a good articles about boehner, which suggests that his political consciousness rests entirely on his tax bill.

If the Dems want to run him as a candidate all I can say is good luck.

GOP candidate in a “crazy” soap opera
By Michael Riley
The Denver Post

The race for House District 56 should have been a bright spot in state Republicans’ effort to retake the legislature: They had found a candidate, Muhammad Ali Hasan, who is young and articulate and had both the time and money to wrest the seat from Democrats.

But then Hasan’s campaign publicist and former girlfriend filed for a temporary restraining order against him, alleging that he tried to hack into her computer and tracked her whereabouts after their personal relationship soured.

Hasan, the scion of one of the state’s biggest Republican fundraisers, countered by hiring the same high-priced law firm that defended basketball star Kobe Bryant in a sex-assault case.

The publicist, Alison Miller, dropped her effort for a permanent order but said it was under heavy pressure from prominent Republicans who cared more about the party’s image than possible inappropriate behavior by its well-heeled candidate.

And the issue may still end up in criminal court.

The whole thing has made for tit-for-tat coverage in the local media, turning 2008 into one of the most bizarre local campaign seasons many people in Eagle County can remember — and it’s only March.

“Thing is just crazy”

“There are enough problems, and it’s enough hard work just to try and keep the wheels on anyway without having this kind of thing happen,” said Randy Milhoan, chairman of the Eagle County Republican Party. “The whole thing is just crazy. You couldn’t have scripted a story more cleverly than this one.”

Or a soap opera. And like most good story lines, this one has romance, political intrigue and plenty of money.

Hasan lives in a $10 million Beaver Creek mansion with his parents, who made a fortune in the health-maintenance-organization business and have been willing to part with significant sums for the Republican Party.

Ali’s father, Malik, is a Bush Pioneer, one of the party’s elite national fundraisers. Ali and his mother, Seeme, created Muslims for Bush, and the family home is dotted with pictures of the Hasans with the current occupant of the White House.

Read-the-whole-thing.

I am not sure what you agree on with me, I am a little bit dumbfounded. The man who had been making the statement I quoted had several acedemic degrees (admittedly for engineering and likeminded disciplines) and been teaching in Army facilities. I am not sure how to explain it…

Maybe a certain, all-too-human laziness of the mind that gets nurtured very busily by the 24/7 21st century media of the 1st world plus a good ammount of White Fright. I don’t know, though. But in the end, it was just one of dozens of such talking-points, other highlights being that the Ground Zero Mosque would get build with Obama Stimulus money, that America was going down because the campuses were infested with Liberals teaching the youth to disavow their parents’ culture and instead embrace one of dependency, etc. etc.

At times I wished I had a rusty nail to squeeze into my palm to keep me from snapping.

Honestly, on a scale of 1-10 things that scare me, Islamic banking is pretty low. As far as I know, you don’t get beheaded or imprisoned or stoned to death if you miss a mortgage payment or anything like that, it’s just a different way of doing business that’s neither better nor worse (to my knowledge) than our way. Just a different way of managing risks. Maybe it is really bad, I don’t know, maybe someone can explain more?

41 jamesfirecat  Sun, Dec 12, 2010 11:34:29am

Here’s the money shot for me…

“But the person who opened the door widest? Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

It is Speaker Pelosi, who has personally recruited me to join the Democratic Party. In calling me and asking to meet in Los Angeles, Speaker Pelosi looked into my eyes and said (I am paraphrasing), “I don’t mind if you’re conservative and don’t support universal health care… what I ask of you is that you work to make sure that every American is given an opportunity. If we can agree on that, then you’re a Democrat! And I want you to make your home here!”

As I may have mentioned before, there is a lot of hatred for Nancy Pelosi (even on LGF every now and again) and in my opinion very little reason for it….

Some good news. I know most of you will hear for the first time about the so-called “National Expert Commission for Defense of Public Morality” in Ukraine. It was created in the last months of Kuchma’s presidency and is a really repressive, Talibannish institution, run by some pretty creepy people.

They wanted to ban even Simpsons and South Park, the latter on child porn charges: [Link: korrespondent.net…]

They also tried to re-define antisemitism as pertaining to Semitic peoples in general rather than to Jews: [Link: jn.com.ua…]

One of the members of the Commission, Bohdan Benyuk, is a far right nationalist, member of the ultra-nationalist party “Svoboda”, run by a racist antisemite Tyahnibok. Once he arrived at an anti-Commission event and started his speech by making an antisemitic joke, and later used obscene word towards a female journalist who later sued him.

Thankfully, the Commission is about to be liquidated. Yanukovych in his 9.12.10 order prescribes his cabinet to decide on a matter of elimination of the Commission:

Yeah, this.

Honestly, at this rate, I’m agreeing with SJ. It’s looking harder and harder for anyone who isn’t a straight, white, Christian guy to find a reason to vote Republican. The GOP are bound and determined to become a regional white party filled with paranoid conspiracy kooks.

Miller held Ali’s hand while she drove, using her other to maneuver the car back toward downtown Glenwood Springs. Over the past few weeks, a romance had developed between the two. Miller, 26 and a mother of three young boys, originally joined the team as a publicist. But one night, after a Young Republicans debate, Ali found himself kissing her against her car. At first they’d kept things quiet and casual. “If there is one elected office I have held, it is ‘Mayor of Commitment-Phobia-Ville,’” he says. “I told her, ‘I’m a bad guy. I’m this womanizing mean guy who wants to be a politician.’”

73 Varek Raith  Sun, Dec 12, 2010 11:58:50am

From wiki…

Five times in the stadium’s history, heavy snows or other weather conditions have damaged the roof and caused it to deflate. On November 19, 1981, a rapid accumulation of over a foot of snow caused the roof to collapse, requiring it to be re-inflated. It deflated the following winter on December 30, 1982, again because of a tear caused by heavy snow. This was four days before the Vikings played the Dallas Cowboys in the last regular season game of the 1982 NFL season. In the spring following that same winter, on April 14, 1983, the Metrodome roof deflated because of a tear caused by a late-season heavy snow, and the scheduled Twins’ game with the California Angels was postponed. On April 26, 1986, the Metrodome roof suffered a slight tear because of high winds, causing a nine-minute delay in the bottom of the seventh inning vs the Angels.

On December 12th, 2010, at about 5:00 a.m., the roof had a catastrophic collapse as a result of more than seventeen inches of snow the previous day, sustaining three tears in the process.

Italian hospital asks doctors not to snort cocaine at work

An Italian hospital director sent a memo to doctors and nurses asking them not to snort cocaine while on duty, the ANSA news agency reported.

Giuseppe Di Maria now faces possible disciplinary action following the memo sent to medical staff at the Santa Catarina Novella di Galatina Hospital near Lecce in southern Italy.

The memo was sent after Di Maria received anonymous tip-offs about the practice at the hospital, the report said.

American Muslims: Our Own Worst Enemy by HasanDaddy/Muhammad Ali Hasan

Yet, does labeling Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist groups suddenly give blanket waver to the atrocities that are committed against Muslims around the world? Absolutely not – Israel’s army is a terrorist organization in one’s eyes, as well, considering their recent atrocities against the many innocent people of Lebanon. In addition, Hamas and Hezbollah are political organizations with much power, so we have no choice but to interface with them and encourage positive dialogue; but we must be critical of their guilty acts.

They can try. Let’s see. So far in 10 minutes I found a restraining order attempt that was dropped for family and financial reasons — not because of legal reasons. Then I found him having said “Israel’s army is a terrorist organization.” Sure, they can try. Good luck with that I say. With this information he won’t win anything in Colorado. Whether or not he’s a douche doesn’t change the fact that the GOP is pretty much openly hostile to Muslims and other minorities. That’s a problem, and it’s not a small one.

Welcome to politics.

They do it to everyone- Bush, Obama, Palin and even Supreme Court Justice nominees. They have all been victims of personal attacks, And there are millions of voters who take delight in the frenzy.

Every single day.

It all depends on who is listening. I thought that Clinton did a very good job in that press conference. On the economic front all I can say is I hope they’re right. I’m tired of waiting for the housing market to pick up again. Overall I agree with Obama making this deal with the GOP.

That’s an interesting bit. Hasan is a bit tone-deaf if he doesn’t understand that leaving such ambiguity in the air in reference to such a topic on a site doesn’t add him political points. This review, however, explains some things about the movie:

[Link: rabiamovie.com…]

“I grew up in a household where we had a framed picture of Arabic calligraphy that said ‘Allah,’ and near that a picture of Ronald Reagan,” said Hasan.

[…]

The movie stars the excellent Iranian actress Hanieh Jodat as a Palestinian woman driven to despair after she is rejected by lovers, is childless and divorced by her husband.

[…]

“To me, ‘Rabia’ is not a film that supports terrorism,” Hasan said. “My motivation is to open a dialog, and I think in our efforts in the war on terror, it will be better to know where they’re coming from, and not just dismiss them all as evil.”

Unlike most politics, the movie is ambiguous and open about Rabia’s life and the conditions of both the Palestinians and the Israelis.

“Movies aren’t meant to explain what’s happening, they’re just meant to show,” Hasan said. “As long as we understand the roots of her depression, that’s the goal. I don’t know if I can explain how someone would choose to kill herself.”

He can’t and he doesn’t.

But he does offer an excruciating ending that shows a formerly denigrated and abused woman making choices that are both self-destructive and life-affirming.

“People ask me if there was an intention that she was not going to blow herself up, and I said no,” Hasan said. “There’s a point of no return; once they make a decision, they never go back.”

The real question, Hasan said, was whether she would choose to kill other people besides herself.

BTW, as to that temporary restraining order, according to the same review and to Hasan’s own comments here, it has been removed. Of course, Hasan’s position on Israel doesn’t really make him electable. All this doesn’t show he’s lying tho.

OT: Good News/Bad News

Mom’s memorial service yesterday went beautifully, I cried a lot, but that was because people actually touched me with their testimonials. I think it and the reception afterwards went about as well as these things can. I like to think that Mom would have been very pleased with it. (Good News)

Dad developed a new bleed about 72 hours ago, and it hasn’t stopped, just slowly gotten worse. I had to put a “pad” in his underwear to dress him for the service, but at least I got him there. He absolutely refused to go to the hospital last night, even though I brought his sister and my brother over to try to argue with him about it too.

When his daily nurse showed up around noon she was suitably shocked and we had her “Baker act” him and call for the EMS, it is all we could do. Not sure when Dad is going to forgive me, if ever, he keeps saying he just wants to die in his own bed and that we should let him, yet he also wont sign up for the hospice care that would allow that to happen.

I honestly don’t think the rest of the family would ever quite forgive me for letting him slowly bleed out. If he wants to be allowed to do that then he needs to work that out with hospice, not stick me with the guilt.

/and here I thought that once we got past the memorial things would be easier for a bit…sigh. :(

I highly doubt they would. I suspect that it would be cause for many bitter accusations and long held grudges. I’ve seen that sort of thing before from family members and family friends who wanted to deny that my grandma had Alzheimer’s.

If he wants to be allowed to do that then he needs to work that out with hospice, not stick me with the guilt.

Absolutely concur. This may cause some friction between you and your father, but I don’t how you could approach this in any other way.

“how anyone who belongs to a minority group can vote republican is beyond me. the mental gymnastics required to do that are both ridiculous and depressing”

Because many people think shallowly and vote emotionally because they are lazy, self-absorbed, and prefer idle entertainment to the work of nation building (and maintaining) and participating in a democracy. Due to this self-imposed myopic ignorance, they don’t realize they are being manipulated into shooting themselves in the foot.

Although I’m quite late on this one, I have to say that this is a fairly good explanation of why I gave up the ghost. For a long time I tried to hold on, but wanting to slap some sense into MYSELF became to big a roadblock.

I hope it doesn’t drive others, like myself, not just out of the GOP mindset, but all the way to the Marx fan club. This WHOLE THING has gotten out of control; it’s always seemed like government is less about governing, and more like a pissing contest.
