Its a shame that this had to happen.

I haven't heard much about this guy up till now so I can only offer my condolences to all who knew him and all who cared about him.....

It comes to soon always too soon....

I just got online and saw that. Damn, too bad. I don't like reading stuff like this. RIP Mr. Holbrooke.

Deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. Holbrooke.

I'm at my parent's house, and the news was on in the kitchen. My dad said, "too bad. He seemed like he knew what he was doing."

That's a pretty big compliment from him, considering that he seems to think everyone who has ever served in government in any capacity is a complete idiot.

Here's a piece from the New Yorker last year:

[Link: www.newyorker.com...]

Among other interesting reminders, they speculate that if Gore had become president, Holbrooke would have been Secretary of State.

And he would not have been lecturing Katie Couric on why we invaded Iraq. Just at a guess.

Holbrooke had an instrumental role in the success of the Balkan conflict in the late 90s.

He was a great diplomat in my humble opinion.

16 b_sharp  Mon, Dec 13, 2010 6:36:17pm

Now I'm not trying to poke anyone with a stick here and I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but I've always wondered about the phrase ' rest in peace'. If you're dead, you're dead, you aren't about to get up and party, nor are you likely to have a fitful sleep death. Where the heck did that saying come from?

If you're dead, you're dead, you aren't about to get up and party, nor are you likely to have a fitful sleep death. Where the heck did that saying come from?

An explanation:

Found inscribed in Hebrew on gravestones, in the 1st century BC graveyard of Bet Shearim. This verse speaks of the righteous person who passed away, because he could not stand the evil surrounding him. A recapture of these words read as "come and rest in peace" has been transferred to the ancient Talmudic prayers in a mixture of Hebrew and Aramaic of the 3rd century AD, and used to this day in traditional Jewish ceremonies.[5]

The phrase in English was not found on tombstones before the eighth century.[6][7] It became common on the tombs of Catholics in the 18th century for whom it was a prayerful request that their soul should find peace in the afterlife. When the phrase became conventional, the absence of a reference to the soul led people to suppose that it was the physical body which was enjoined to lie peacefully in the grave.[8] This is associated with the Catholic doctrine of the particular judgment which is that the soul is parted from the body upon death but that they will be reunited on Judgment Day.[9]

That's description is due to trauma. It's not the only way an aorta can burst... like I said above... my dad had his aorta burst... sort of like an aneurism... at least that's how his doctor described it... no trauma, he was lying in bed sleeping... maybe the doctor gave us the simple laymans explanation... anyway... that's what happened to him.

Traumatic Aortic Rupture.

In my dads case (and I think most cases of this) the big problem is not so much repairing the aorta (they closed his off)... it's because the blood bleeding out inside the body, it cause all sorts of pressure on other organs, smaller vessels burst, you have a lot of other bleeders... he actually bled out twice... initially and then after they repaired the aorta and gave him a massive amount of transfusions, he bled out again, mainly through the smaller vessels... they finally stabilized him, using all sorts of blood clotting agents and stuff... and he started to regain functions in the liver and the kidney.. they had induced a coma... he actually live two days, rare to even survive the initial incident... but they decided the lack of blood had given him irreversible brain damage.

Holiday in Chernobyl: Ukraine to lift restrictions on disaster site
Err...
Okely dokely?

Nothing says fabulous vacation more than a radioactive nuclear disaster site.

...Guides monitor radiation levels and "know where the people can go and where the people cannot go," he said.

Mycio said tourists should wear "something that you wouldn't mind leaving behind in case it does get dirty." But most radioactive material has sunk into the soil, and visitors receive a dose comparable to the exposure they would receive on a trans-Atlantic flight.

"The only concern I would have is if too many people come in and it becomes this nuclear Disneyland," Mycio said. "That would take away from a wildlife sanctuary (that has thrived) in the absence of people."

Reagan receives centennial stamp

Former President Ronald Reagan was remembered Monday with a unique birthday gift: his own postage stamp. Reagan's 100th birthday is coming up on February 6th, 2011.

The price of a President Reagan stamp has gone up over the years. The first stamp dedicated to the late president was issued at 37 cents. The new stamp will cost 44 cents, and is expected to become a forever stamp.

The stamp was revealed during a ceremony at the Reagan Library in California that was attended by former first lady Nancy Reagan. James C. Miller, a former member of Reagan's cabinet and current member of the Board of Governors of the U.S. Postal Service, also made remarks.

"With President Reagan, what you saw was what you got: humble, honest, and trustworthy," Miller said. He remembered Reagan as someone who "had extraordinary trust in the goodness and good sense of the American people" and pledged to do everything he can to make Reagan's centennial stamp a forever stamp.

The new stamp, a third dedicated to Reagan, will go on sale in February of 2011.

Kansas Pastor is ready to take on hate group...

Westboro Baptist Is Going To Picket Our Church — We Will Respond
By Jack Wellman

I am presently the pastor at Mulvane Brethren Church and below is a press release that I received about Fred Phelps’ Westboro Church of Topeka coming to picket our local church. They plan to picket our church this Sunday, December 19th, at the beginning of our services.

Why?

Because Mulvane, Kansas is the home of the Patriot Guard, which consists of dozens and dozens of American veterans who ride on their motorcycles and use American flags to block this church’s protests of veterans' funerals. They protest as many veterans' funerals that they possibly can, even if it’s a child of a veteran’s family who is deceased.

...

I've driven in the snow in several states. The common denominator is the guy who has to go faster than everyone else because he has a 4WD - which most people in Colorado have regardless. You typically catch up to that guy a couple miles down the road. His truck is the one flipped over, crashed or in the ditch. Yeah I went with a less is more approach for this one so it could be applied to just about any kind of anti-muslim bigotry.

That and I figured that the picture of the cat dressed up like a suicide bomber was a little too "on the nose" for this kind of thing to make it funny...

How's this?

Festivus celebration gets jailed drug dealer special meals

Though the holiday is for the rest of us, there's only one inmate in California who was able to take advantage of his Festivus belief.

An attorney for a convicted drug dealer argued that the 38-year-old man disliked Salami and that it was against his belief in Festivus, a secular holiday created by a writer and popularized by the classic NBC sitcom "Seinfeld."

That inmate, Malcolm Alarmo King, was initially denied kosher meals at the Theo Lacy jail in Orange County. King had requested the meals to maintain his physique, according to The Orange County Register.

Typically, jail food modifications are allowed only for allergies and religious reasons. That apparently was the case in Orange County.

The drug dealer's defense attorney, Fred Thiagarajah, cited his client's devotion to Festivus - the holiday celebrated on the hit TV show with an aluminum pole and the airing of grievances, according to the Register.

It was reported the dealer got salami-free meals for two months before county officials got his order thrown out.

No word on where the inmate had his Festivus pole.

I'll be honest. I see machines that will break (the cupboards that lower instead of just, you know, swinging open on hinges), and items to be cleaned. That bathroom looks like a toughy. Lots of things that are bolted down and crud will build up in the cracks.

This is very sad news. I was amazed by his work on the Bosnia conflict back in the 1990s.

By the way, the reports say he suffered from an aortic dissection, like what happened to John Ritter. I did a bit of research and understand that this is much rarer than a heart attack, but with a much worse prognosis. It often happens after many years of progressive aortic dilation and creeps up on people (even some young people, especially those with connective tissue disorders) and must be diagnosed way before the dissection stage with imaging diagnostics and often prophylactic aortic surgery.

The lack of public awareness isn't restricted to laymen. There have been cases where emergency room staff waste precious time thinking it's a heart attack or even disregard the symptoms and send patients home.

233 fire at night  Mon, Dec 13, 2010 10:50:17pm

Ouch, and rest in peace Mr Holbrooke.

May he rest in peace, and his family receive prayers from those so inclined to wish them well. Despite with disagreements on policy he may have held, he was still an Ambassador of the highest order in a troubled region that we are involved with.

/My thoughts and well wishes are still out there for him and his family, along with the legacy he and the current administration hope to achieve in the long run. I do hope his family finds respite and solstice, and ultimately peace in the near future with his intentions and bonds he hoped to foster on a greater scope of responsibility than many Lizards currently deal with.

"A man with good intentions is always noble, but his legacy is what history defines." This man had the best intentions in his heart for peace in a war-torn land, but hopefully the ideals and intentions take root in the lands he was steaded with during his charge as the envoy of US intent to make AFG more stable and persevering in democratic endeavors.
