Seems rather cowardly. Bring the DADT repeal to vote and if Sen. Corker wants to vote no on the repeal he should do so and be brave enough to face the possibility that the repeal may pass. The only reason he is threatening this block is because he's afraid it will pass.

If you're just coming to the #START debate, GOP lining up behind @SenJohnMcCain's amendment to de facto kill the treaty. [2hrs ago]
Sounds like McCain's faction may be hinging their support on amending the Treaty's preamble, which would force it to be renegotiated with the Russians.
American Conservative Magazine:
[Link: www.amconmag.com...]
I’m watching the debate on McCain’s amendment, which is indeed an attempt to strip out the preamble language referring to defensive weapons. As I said, it’s worse than worthless, and it confirms that McCain will not support the treaty. Foster has updated his post to include Graham’s objection to the preamble language:Senator Graham, in remarks just now on the Senate floor, said New START’s preamble, which many believe contains an implicit limitation on U.S. missile defense, should be taken out of treaty, or else it “would be better not to do the treaty.” “You should not sign the treaty” without losing the preamble, Graham said.

I had a nuclear war nightmare last week; I was on the west coast on a peaceful mid-afternoon overlooking an offshore island, when suddenly maybe 100 underground missiles launched, causing the air itself ripple out like a giant shockwave.
As the missiles took off into the sky I knew they were nuclear, and that we only had as long as it would take for the missiles coming from the otherside of the Earth to reach here before everything was over. I remember thinking to myself in the dream that all of my previous considerations of nuclear war completely failed to prepare me for the absolute horror of seeing those missles disappear into the sky.

re: #62 simoom
As to it's effect on any current U.S. missile defense plans:
General Patrick O’Reilly, the head of the US Missile Defense Agency: Relative to the New START Treaty, the New START treaty actually reduces constraints on the development of the missile defense program… our targets will no longer be subject to START constraints, which previously limited our use air-to-surface and water borne launches of targets, which are essential for the cost effective testing of missile defense interceptors against medium and intermediate range ballistic missile targets in the Pacific area.
…The New START treaty also has no constraints on ballistic missile defense system deployment. Article V section 3 of the treaty prohibits the conversions of ICBMs or SLBM conversion to missile defense launchers and vis-versa, while grandfathering 5 former ICBM silos at Vandenberg Air Force Base already converted for ground-based interceptors. MDA never had a plan to convert additional ICBM silos at Vandenberg. Moreover, we have determined that if more interceptors are added to Vandenberg Air Force Base it would be less expensive to build a new GBI missile field, which is not prohibited by the treaty. Regarding, sea launched ballistic missile launchers sometime ago we examined the concept of launching ballistic missile defense interceptors from submarines and found it an unattractive and extremely expensive option.
Also, from yesterday:
[Link: thehill.com...]
Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. James Cartwright said Thursday that the Pentagon believes the U.S. needs the Senate to ratify the New START Treaty.Cartwright, accompanied by Defense Secretary Robert Gates at a White House briefing on the annual Afghanistan review, joined a laundry list of current and former military officials who have endorsed the treaty President Obama is now trying desperately to pass.
"All the joint chiefs are very much behind the treaty," Cartwright said. He added: "We need START, and we need it badly."

The whole ethanol thing is one piece of the puzzle as to why so many do not trust the government or anyone associated with it on climate change. Al Gore, one of the early champions of climate change, basically recently stated that he pushed for ethanol to help his chances in Iowa.
All of them are taking us backwards.

It's unlikely to be stopped. It's a cash cow for corn growers and thus ethanol will always command a great deal of agribusiness support here in Illinois (only Iowa grows more corn).
massive amounts of fertilizer, pesticides and water....killing the land for some scheme to make money, while fouling the air even more, and it's the govt that's responsible

Some supporting background:
The Gulf of Mexico Dead ZoneNitrogen and phosphorus were first used in fertilizers in the United States in the 1930s. Concentrations of nitrate and phosphate in the lower Mississippi have increased proportionately to levels of use of fertilizers by agriculture since the 1960s, when fertilizer use increased by over two million metric tons per year. Overall, nitrogen input to the Gulf from the Mississippi River Basin has increased between two and seven times over the past century.

Obama OKs tax credits for ethanol, solar power, home energy upgrades
...
Also in the package is an extension, through 2011, of five tax credits to promote U.S.-made ethanol. "Domestic ethanol production helps create jobs and economic opportunity in often overlooked rural communities," said the Bob Dineen, CEO of Renewable Fuels Association, an ethanol industry group, in a statement. He said it also "reduces America's tab to petro-dictators across the globe."
Sean Garren, clean energy advocate for Environment America, welcomed the package's extension of incentives for solar and wind energy but criticized as environmentally harmful the continued U.S. subsidies of corn ethanol and coal-to-liquid fuels. "They are not effective technologies to reduce our dependence on oil," Garren said in a statement.

Here's an odd coupling of groups:
The other big winner was corn ethanol: producers got an extension of a 45-cent-per-gallon tax credit. That was opposed by many environmentalists and by other industries that use corn, including livestock producers. Given the growing fear of budget deficits, opponents thought they had a good shot at reducing the size of the tax break.
“The federal government should not waste another $6 billion on this needless subsidy,’’ a coalition that included the American Meat Institute, the National Taxpayers Union, the National Wildlife Federation and the Snack Food Association declared. Among the foes’ arguments was that with federal quotas in place for minimum use of ethanol, the subsidy would not increase the volume sold.

SantaGate? Give me a quick synopsis—I obviously missed it.
The Spanish teacher at my little Catholic school told the fourth graders (when asked) that she did not believe in Santa, and went on to lecture them about how Santa-belief was idolatrous.
Mass hysteria ensued.
Apparently she was asked the same question in my sixth-grade class yesterday. I knew I shouldn't have left the room to go get a cup of coffee.
Anyway, today, the principal dropped by to check in, because one of my sixth-graders waited until bedtime last night and then said, "Mom, there's something I have to tell you, even though Sra. said not to tell anyone or we'd be in trouble."
Yeah, if I was a parent, my heart would have stopped hard on that one, but it was about Santa.
Anyway, a reliable witness (another kid), says that Sra. said to the sixth grade what she was told to, namely, that she did not personally believe in Santa, and that Jesus was the reason for the season, but no idol worship talk.

Modern North American anarchists certainly have - things look much messier in Europe and South America.
PS its easy to also pluck positive examples of anarchist resistance in the 20th century. Example; anarchist groups were some of the first to recognise and resist the rise of the Nazis (and consequently, some of the first to be raided/dismantled.)

Standing in the way of progress as usual. Not only on the wrong side of history on things like DADT, but even on the wrong side of public opinion, including among conservatives. Opposing nearly everything has become a knee-jerk reflex for gop senators. They don't really seem to think about the issues themselves, just plausible reasons to oppose nearly everything, including lots of things they supported before Obama became prez.
