DADT Repeal Passes Senate, DREAM Act Killed by GOP

Politics • Views: 17,456

Big developments in the Senate today; the DREAM Act has been killed by nativist Republicans, but the repeal of DADT is going to pass today when the final vote is taken at 3 pm ET.

The overwhelming majority of Republicans voted to continue denying rights to gays and immigrants, which should come as no surprise.

UPDATE at 12/18/10 12:32:25 pm:

That’s it! DADT is dead. Final vote 65-31.

This will certainly shore up "bonafides" for the GOP with Nativists of all stripes [well except that one loon from AIM who tweeted back at me once about not using "Nativists" to describe the nativist movement...] At the same time it sets up a generational lock for the Dems with Latinos.

And they the Democrats had one idiot on their side...

West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, who previously stated he opposes repeal, was the only Democrat to miss the vote.

Has that ever really been on the table? I mean, outside of South Florida.

Props to the republicans who did the right thing: Mark Kirk, Scott Brown, George Voinovich, Lisa Murkowski, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

Well, no, apparently you can't. Kind of a bittersweet pill.

The Repeal of DADT is a great thing to have finally.

The DREAM Act failure really hurts though, and I know I'm biased because I have a personal stake in both because of friends and relatives who are either Gay or Bi and wanting to serve, or came to the country as young children and are now young adults trapped in a twilight of having no where to call home.

Whatever you might want to say about Laws and Legal versus Illegal, sometimes it comes down to a point of compassion. If you want to argue that someone who came here as an adult and is here illegally should be kicked out. I can accept that argument. (even if I disagree with a blanket assessment that they should all be kicked out, after all, these are the people who are stubborn enough, hard working enough, and determined enough to get into the country from distant places. That's the type of can do attitude which I think America needs even more of.)

However to tell me that some kid, 6, 8, 10, or even 12 years old who's brought to America by their parents, Raised here, went to school here. graduated high school should be sent back to their home country because of the sins of their parents? A home country they barely remember, and may not even speak the native language of? You may have the law on your side right now. But I don't feel guilty at all when I say, "You have no heart or soul."

Perhaps because there's a difference about stated "rights" as exist in the law at present and the right thing to do. In the case of the DREAM act, the right thing to do appears to me to be very clear and obvious.

A bit of "change" I can believe in, but I wish that the DREAM Act had passed. I'm waiting until after 3:00 p.m. before I celebrate the repeal of DADT. Anything could happen. Then...it is on to the New START treaty. Apparently Bob Corker claimed that if DADT passes, the Republicans won't vote for the New START treaty. How's that for patriotism? I'd also like to see the 911 Responders bill pass. I fear, however, that the US Chamber of Commerce which is strongly pushing back against that bill because its funding will be offset by closing tax loopholes, will have its way. They always do.

Going off topic right away...it seems that the U.S. is thinking about how to cope in the event of a nuclear attack against some of our cities. An all out attack by, say, Russia would be unsurvivable, because even if you lived through the attack itself, the following nuclear winter would be severe beyond comprehension, with sub-zero temperatures even at the equator, for a while. There is no reason to think that Russia would launch such an attack; the ensuing winter would be doubly unsurvivable for them.

But one or two bombs, or a dozen, would be another story. The fallout won't kill you if you stay out of its way.
At least, you have a much better chance.

After the immediate blast of gamma rays, which can kill but that's irrelevant because the blast and heat will do that anyhow at close range, your problem is how to survive the next few hours and days.

(1) Get out of the "sun". Immediately. Duck behind a tree, a corner, anything. The fireball is chockablock with energy and you'll be burned if your skin is exposed to its light.

(2) Get indoors. Promptly. Any structure offers some protection from what's next: a rain of debris and dust, maybe with water too. Either way, the stuff is highly radioactive. Most of the radiation is coming from elements with a short half life: minutes, hours, days. Much of it has minimal penetrating power. Just don't get it on your skin and you've avoided the worst of it. Wash it off if some does get on; change clothes.

(3) Secure your drinking water supply. Toilet tanks are good drinking water. If you had warning, even a few minutes, you filled your bathtub and some containers.

(4) Build a shelter inside your home. Stack a table with books, magazines, etc. Stack more around the sides. Put your bed under the table. Every inch of shielding matters, and if lead isn't available, anything is better than nothing.

(5) Pay attention to sanitation. A run to the latrine, in a far corner of the house, is safe enough. Diarrhea can kill you just as easily as exotic causes.

(6) Sit tight. The clock is your friend. Elements with a half life of a week are 75% gone in two weeks. Elements with a half life of a day, effectively all gone in two weeks. You won't starve to death even if you have no food whatever.

(7) Fend for yourself. There won't be any doctors, any hospitals, any anything. Even if they're up and running, they're out of reach, because the fallout will have made all travel impossibly dangerous. And even if they were up and running and you could reach them, you'd be one more patient on a miles-long waiting list.

The kind of nuclear attack a North Korea can deliver to the U.S. is not a world-shattering blow. If most everybody outside the relatively small zone of total annihilation took the advice, casualties would be greatly reduced.

You can't filibuster a treaty.

The problem is that you need 67 votes to pass it.

So the question is not will they allow a vote on it, but will they vote for it?

26 Stanghazi  Sat, Dec 18, 2010 10:43:35am
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a leading opponent of the measure, said just before the vote said before the vote that "Today's a very sad day." He blamed elite liberals with no military experience for pushing their social agenda on troops during wartime.

"They will do what is asked of them," McCain said of service members. "But don't think there won't be a great cost."

I'm pleasantly surprised at this. Allahpundit via Hot Air had this to say about DADT...

I support the move, but if you don’t, look at it this way: As Gates has often said, if it didn’t happen here it probably would have happened in the courts. Civilian control of the military is one thing, judicial control is something else, so the fact that repeal now wears a democratic halo will hopefully make it more tolerable to skeptics inside the branches. For your enjoyment (or irritation), via Think Progress, here’s video of a very peevish Maverick grumbling in his floor speech today about liberal civilians from coast to coast high-fiving over this. True enough, but it ain’t just liberals — support for repeal is upwards of 80 percent in some polls — and it ain’t just civilians. Exit quotation via another Republican senator from Arizona, cited today on the floor by Harry Reid: “You don’t have to be straight to shoot straight.”

65 Kid A  Sat, Dec 18, 2010 2:32:34pm

WAIT!!!!! Here are some juicy responses over at Hot Air...

1.) This isn’t over by a long shot. The “gay demands” have only begun.

2.) Expect Moo-cow-ski to take a sharp left turn.

Some women just look like a b!tch; Lisa is one.

3.) This poor sick, amoral, valueless country is terminally ill.

4.) You. must. be. high. The Scriptures have been revered by mankind for millenia as the highest source of wisdom, communication from and knowledge of God and His plan for Creation, not to mention the gold standard (See the Ten Commandments) of upright and moral human behavior. But because you say so, poof, the Bible, The Word of God, is now less than worthless.

5.) Frankly this rises to the level of impeachment during time of war.

Oh, and for Brown, I see it *is* the Kennedy seat. Enjoy your next two years, because you aren’t getting re-elected now.

18-1

6.) Does everyone get a vote?

I vote for the rainbow florescent suit for night patrol

7.) The military was one of the last stands against the homosexual agenda and now it is done. I truly believe that this country is going to receive a chastisement for all that we have done.

Can't you all just feel the love here??!!

66 Kid A  Sat, Dec 18, 2010 2:51:43pm

Over at Tea Bag Land (Hot Air) it just gets better. Here are some more responses to the DADT repeal. I can not thank God enough that I will never again vote Republican as long as this element of utter stupidity is a part of it.

1.) When do the butt commandos go into action?

2.) Also, In Iraq it is ordinary for men to walk down the street arm in arm. Darn they are all gay. Don’t believe that? Well, why do Arab men kiss one another on their cheeks?

3.) Perhaps some high ranking general will come out as a tootie-frutie. At least that will add some entertainment value to all this.

JackM

4.) What’s next….?

Crossdressers and transexuals?

Gay bars on base and all male mixers?

How long before two soldiers demand to have a full dress gay wedding or a gay cultural center?

“Why doesn’t the base PX sell astro-glide ”

5.) What’s that over there in the corner, is that a humpbot in the shower staring at your junk. Or is it a TSA grouper?

Unintended consequences.

tarpon

6.) I don’t think there will be homosexuals for very much longer, perhaps another 20 or 30 years before a cure is found. I think during this time it’s good to accept these people as full members of the community including military service, but at the same time educate other servicemen to the real dangers of HIV AIDS and other diseases they carry.

Ted Torgerson

7.) Im sure this will make the Jihadis very happy.

8.) This is just the beginning, the homosexual agenda won’t be happy until we have “fisting czars” in every classroom.

I think during this time it’s good to accept these people as full members of the community including military service, but at the same time educate other servicemen to the real dangers of HIV AIDS and other diseases they carry.

Ted Torgerson

What society needs is a cure for this kind of stupidity.

Funny thing of course is, that there are plenty of gay guys who are more man than these keyboard jocks will ever be, lol

this is the best

This poor sick, amoral, valueless country is terminally ill.

Notice how it's always queers that bring guys like this up? There could be rioting in the streets and 50% unemployment, and they'll still be talking about gays

No shit. Mamma's skirt is big enough to protect several basement boys.

Gays are getting more real sex than they are, they're obviously jealous.

Credit to DAVID M. HERSZENHORN from the NY Times for reporting the DREAM Act vote in a non-partisan way. Very uncharacteristic for that newspaper.

"The vote by 55-41 in favor of the bill, which is known as the Dream Act, effectively kills it for this year, and its fate is uncertain."

"Five Democrats joined Republicans in opposing the bill. They were Democratic Senators Max Baucus of Montana, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Jon Tester of Montana.

And three Republicans joined the balance of Democrats in favor of it: Robert Bennett of Utah, Richard Lugar of Indiana, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska."

If the Democrat Party had united on this vote, the bill would have moved forward.

downding for blaming 5 senators in a party that is never that united anyway instead of the 38 Republicans voting against it for DREAM not passing.

PIMF. Or rather, simple arithmetic is my friend.
And to be technical, I blame the 5 Democrats and 36 Republicans equally.

The folks at "Americans For Truth" are not very happy about the decision. Seems that those dastardly "fag" Marines might kiss in public in uniform and we all know that just means Putin is itching to push the button. Click below...

FreeRepublic's response to DADT repeal is to go on a Stalin-like purge of all site members who aren't openly homophobic.

Great news on DADT.

The toy-throwing from Hot Air and Freeperland is as expected, if a little hard to distinguish from satire.

If you want to come to this country I have no problems with that. Just do it like my mother did. Walk through the doors, apply for entry and then jump through all the hoops to get your citizenship. If you do not want to do that then get out and change your own country.

Indeed.

We do have Marines at Reed with no limbs.

And some of those Marines are probably gay.

So let's let them serve without living in fear that they'll be discovered and drummed out of the military.

While we're at it, let's let them marry their sweethearts.

What if you're brought here when you're 5 by your mother?

What country do you belong to?
