Julian Assange Claims Wikileaks ‘Affiliates’ Have Been ‘Assassinated’

World • Views: 20,060

In the BBC’s interview with Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, we learn that he’s a martyr, a player, a gentleman, perfectly happy with himself, and oh yes — people associated with Wikileaks have been assassinated. The interviewer doesn’t even blink at that one; no follow-up question.

I have an organisation to run. I have my people to defend. There are other things at stake here… There are other things at stake here. I have a serious brewing extradition case in relation to the United States. I have a serious organisation to run. People affiliated with our organisation have already been assassinated.

3 Kronocide  Tue, Dec 21, 2010 10:53:52am

If the interviewer asked Assange to clarify who was assassinated, Assange would have stormed off and called him a tabloid schmuck.

The irony is Wikileak's actions driven by Assange have created a situation where people really could get assassinated.

Fear me!

People affiliated with the organization have been assassinated?

Really? Names. We want names. Who are these people that were supposedly snuffed for their role in wikileaks?

I figure he's simply making stuff up and hoping some of it sticks in the hopes of garnering support for his "cause." He knows that the media is too lackadaisical in trying to fact-check so he gets away with it.

Had the reporter done his job, he would have asked the necessary followups to show that Assange is a blowhard in addition to being an egotistical self-centered anarchist who thinks his judgment and intelligence trumps everyone else around him.

And on a related note...

AFP - Apple said Tuesday it had removed an unofficial WikiLeaks application for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad from its App Store because it violated its guidelines for software developers.

"Apps must comply with all local laws," Trudy Muller, an Apple spokeswoman, told AFP. "It may not put an individual or targeted group in harm's way.

"We removed the WikiLeaks app from the App Store because it violated our developer guidelines," Muller said, declining further comment.

The WikiLeaks application cost 1.99 dollars and provided a mobile version of the WikiLeaks content, which is available on the organization's website for free, and access to its Twitter feed.

However, everyone else and the organizations, governments, corporations, and personal lives that they conduct are free game. Just not his. A check or investigation into his practices would just be superfluous, he's Julian Assange for god's sake, just like Kim Jong doesn't need one, Chavez, or Ahmedinejad. Q: Does put up with you mean having you in their beds?

JA: Of course on occasion, I mean I'm an adult man, but women have been generous to me over many years.

Q: In what sense?

JA: You know, in a sense of assisting me with my work, caring for me, loving me and so on. That is what I am used to. So this particular episode in Sweden came as a great shock. The personal shock of having people you're close to doing that, actually much harder to deal with, in a much greater feeling of betrayal than all of these political disputes I have with United States and being sued by banks and so on. Much harder to handle.

No. What I'm objecting to is this:

Assange is a front man, designed to get our attention and to be laughed at.

I don't think he's designed for that purpose. I think he just is someone who craves attention and inevitably gets laughed at.

Wikileaks hasn't gotten a ton of money, nor does it need a ton; it's just bandwidth costs at the moment. They're probably saving a bunch for legal defense funds.

Yes, I agree. I doubt BB gave him money or is making that much, but my point is Wikileaks probably gets a lot of $ in small donations. I would not be surprised if BB gave them a $20 here or there if he got a decent check from his writing gig. I'm not loaded but occasionally I'll float a $25 or $50 to my causes or blogs.

Gotcha. No, I don't think Assange is super wealthy personally from all of this, and I agree - I'm not at all convinced he's a front man for some group - his ego is too huge to allow him to be anybody's "front" man. He wants the glory all for himself.

A Wikileaks business model is interesting when you consider the cost of developing the content of essays, position papers, gossip, etc. has all been absorbed by the taxpayers who fund the governments from whom the material is stolen. The benefits of fame from 'sharing' go only to the sharers, and not the content generators.

To be fair, WikiLeaks did not just leak government stuff but also lots of corporations' and private persons' stuff.

True, I just thought it was interesting that an operation and become powerful and well known now if it puts something online to share, and it's a real shortcut to fame if you steal someone's content instead of going to all the trouble of developing your own.

Maybe it's just me -- but lately, I can't think of this guy without thinking of this guy:

It's crucial to point out, though, that that is also the success model of Wikipedia (the "no original research" rule basically means that contributors may only edit in information that he has reworded content from reputable sources sufficiently enough to avoid copyright issues). Collaboration efforts that result in "free" and/or "open" products are ubiquitous these days.

garbled. I meant: the "no original research" rule basically means that contributors may only contribute information that they got from reputable sources but reworded sufficiently enough to avoid copyright issues.

I don't see it as a question of fairness.

I don't see it as a question of fairness.

It is when you consider that I replied to 176 in which Jaunte made the argument about the production costs being absorbed by taxpayers because the sources of the leaks were government agencies.

re: #193 000G

I should have used more inclusive terms; it's just a very efficient transfer of value to the leaders of the sharing organization if they acquire content without having to pay for it.

So when is Wikileaks planning to release a hundred thousand Kenyan documents? What? Don't hold my breath?

Don't worry, I wasn't.

They did already. It's called the Kroll report.
