Who knew that all it'd take to get most of the Democratic agenda thru Congress was voting the Democrats out of Congress?

Many of them are doing it by stop being republicans.

re: #6 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

Many of them are doing it by stop being republicans.

They stop being Republican only as defined by the current movers and shakers of the party.

Which means there are a heckuva lot of RINOs running around (in Congress, and in the general public as well).

Good. Now one more major piece of legislation to deal with - the Zadroga 9/11 responder bill.

And they'll be able to end the session with plenty of time to spare.

Previous iterations of the START Treaty (START I, START II) had overwhelming support in the Senate for passage.

START II:

17 . Treaty Number: 103-1 Transmitted to the Senate: January 15, 1993
Short Title: TREATY WITH THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION ON FURTHER REDUCTION AND LIMITATION OF STRATEGIC OFFENSIVE ARMS (THE START II TREATY)
Type: Arms Control
Countries/Parties: Russian Federation
Latest Action: January 26, 1996 - Resolution of advice and consent to ratification agreed to in Senate by Yea-Nay vote. 87-4. Record Vote No: 6 EX.

START I:

18 . Treaty Number: 102-32 Transmitted to the Senate: June 19, 1992
Short Title: PROTOCOL TO THE TREATY WITH THE UNION OF SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS ON THE REDUCTION AND LIMITATION OF STRATEGIC OFFENSIVE ARMS
Type: Arms Control
Countries/Parties: Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
Latest Action: October 01, 1992 - Resolution of advice and consent to ratification agreed to in Senate with amendments by Yea-Nay Vote. 93 - 6. Record Vote Number: 253.

We've come a long way since then, and not in a good way.

The procedural history on this treaty (START III) is nothing like its predecessors.

Outgoing Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA,) used his last day in the Senate to savage the leadership of the Republican Party, which he left in 2009.

Specter Hits GOP "Cannibalism" in Goodbye Speech

In a farewell speech on the Senate floor today, departing Republican-turned-Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania said members of the GOP who backed Tea Party candidates over establishment Republicans this year engaged in "a form of sophisticated cannibalism."

The 80-year-old Specter, who has served in the Senate for more than three decades, said he was offering "not a farewell address but rather a closing argument." He complained that members of the Senate had grown too ideological for the good of the legislative body.

"Collegiality can obviously not be maintained when negotiating with someone simultaneously out to defeat you - especially within your own party," he said. "In some quarters, 'compromising' has become a dirty word. Some senators insist on ideological purity as a precondition."

"However, on religious issues there can be little or no compromise.
There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious
beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than
Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme
being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God's name on one's
behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are
growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with
wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following
their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups
on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a
loss of money or votes or both. I'm frankly sick and tired of the
political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if
I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' and 'D.'
Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to
claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even
more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every
religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my
vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today:
I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their
moral convictions to all Americans in the name of 'conservatism.' "

Guys around here use those big ol' white Shakespeare surf rods for flatheads. Fifty pounders aren't uncommon.
They also get down below dams and try to snag spoonbills. You sure need to keep an eye on those guys when they are around... make sure they don't snag you with a cast.

Sorry about the extra posting on this, but this part of Specter's farewell speech really deserves mentioning.

Specter didn't limit his criticism to the legislative bodies - he went after the Supreme Court justices as well in his speech, specifically in relation to the "Citizens United" decision - this part was largely ignored by media, unfortunately.

Specter issues parting blow to Roberts, Alito

In his final speech on the Senate floor, Specter, the former GOP chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, chastised Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito for "eroding the constitutional mandate of separation of powers."

Specter specifically took issue with the court's controversial 5-4 decision early this year, in which it relaxed federally-imposed campaign finance regulations for corporations and unions.

"Ignoring a massive congressional record and reversing recent decisions, Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito repudiated their confirmation testimony given under oath and provided the key votes to permit corporations and unions to secretly pay for political advertising - thus effectively undermining the basic Democratic principle of the power of one person, one vote," said Specter. Chief Justice Roberts promised to just call balls and strikes and then he moved the bases."

I denounce the fear-mongering of John McCain and others who do our country a grave disservice by their bigotry and calcified retardation. His outlandish remarks that justice will result in amputations demonstrates the ridiculousness of his entire argument. His silliness proves the fight for justice has no real logical debate; you are on one side or the other. John McCain, you are on the wrong side of history. I'd bet that all four seats are going to be Republican, given that the Texas Legislature over the past eight years has been stacked with Rick Perry and Tom DeLay's handpicked candidates. Remember, DeLay was recently convicted of money laundering to finance these campaigns. One of the driving forces for his getting "his people" in office was to affect congressional districting maps - the redrawn maps that he got in 2002 (in a non-census year redrawing) swung Republican by an order of TWELVE congressional seats in just two years (from a 17-15 Democratic advantage in 2002 to a 21-11 Republican advantage in 2004).

Texas will gain four new House seats, and Florida will gain two. Gaining one each are Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah and Washington.

Ohio and New York will lose two House seats each. Losing one House seat are Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Most news stories are making that his is a GOP gain, which it likely is, but to me it portends something else - political parties will have to morph even more to take into account the regional population shifts.

Small fish. Basically anything under 10 inches. We have Osprey's, cormorants, Bald and Gold eagles, pelicans, storks and pretty much every other fish eating bird out here this time of year and if the fish are too small then they get eaten up by the birds in a heartbeat.

The pay lakes (those you don't need a license at) tend to stock with larger fish to avoid too much loss due to predation. The one I caught was probably just over a foot when stocked (it had a lot of tail growth).

The california DFG tends to put smaller fish (aka dinks) in the park lakes and it's a feeding frenzy for any type of fish eating bird.

At least that makes a little bit of sense. However, those guys were already human rights activists long before Wikileaks was around. Identifying them primarily with Wikileaks is disingenuous.

I also wonder if they were killed because Wikileaks outed them as the source of the material. Wikileaks has been pretty sloppy with redacting documents.

Hmmm, 1,500 strategic nuclear warheads (those are the big ones) each, is still a mind boggling amount of Ka-boom.

It's a lot less than the ten to twenty thousand each side had 25 years ago. The numbers are getting down to less than bounce-the-rubble quantities. We might be able to divide by another factor of 5 or 10 and still have a prudent level of deterrence: a visibly un-preempt-able second strike capability.

We have no need of or use for a first-strike capability.

I'm afraid I am not in a position to judge that.
I accept its a common view for those on the right.

I think Govt. like all large corporations can make some poor decisions because of the Independence of departments, and each department responsible for its own budgets. Often a department may be profitable, but adversley effect other departments.

This was true in Oz for one of our telcos, the 'copper lines' was seperate to the 'digital lines', they often worked in a way that had overall adverse effects on the company, yet each individually showed a profit.

This has been what I have observed in Australia.

Not to a great extent. I'm in a very urban area - so we're doing ok. Cars on my street were snowed in the first couple of days though.
We had 4 inches in one go - london can't cope with that, and until it melts theres nowhere to put the stuff that lands in the side streets, so, cars remain stuck and the elderly can't get out.

I'm fine though. Heatings been cranked up though.

The winter of '87 was epic, i remember that one very very well.

We used to have very severe winters a few decades ago - but the severity dropped off, mild winters cool summers. We hovered a long time in the middle of climates, and we suffer when we have extremes - the infrastructure can't cope. We don't have bad weather (aside from scotland) enough to have a scandinavian style infrastructure to deal with it. We just have to shut down for a few days.

A couple thoughts:

1. If that is what he is talking about, OK, that makes some sense, but I would comment that these men were clearly killed for their human rights work in Kenya, not because they worked for Wikileaks.

It is an important thing to note.

meek, quiet men can be the worst savages....if you deny that, you miss really important stuff

Perhaps they have a higher level of education than the genocide participants of Turkey or Rwanda. It is all heinous.

Don't you get it! It is much worse since they were organized and stuff!!!!

What a moron.

Pam, stop helping.

This is not going to get us anywhere good.

What's up with all the Hitler?

It also doesn't make much sense, since the Nazis weren't 'savages'.

She's not noticing that disconnect, she's just focusing on the Mufti/Hitler connection. You're overthinking this. They can't think, so overthinking their work is not useful.

It's going to do much more harm than good. calling the Palestinians savages on a bus ad or billboard just looks bad. The bus company is never going to allow the ad.

A couple thoughts:

1. If that is what he is talking about, OK, that makes some sense, but I would comment that these men were clearly killed for their human rights work in Kenya, not because they worked for Wikileaks.

2. I would also comment that these guys had real balls, and I'd like Assange to look at their example, man up, and stop being so damn weird already.

He can't. He is not of that caliber. And he doesn't know or care about being a man. It's all ego all the time.

She's obsessed with the Nazi-Islam Alliance from WWII. Nobody else is going to have any clue what that ad is about.

Also, if we're going to play that game, poor beleaguered overrun-by-Muslims Europe is pretty easy to smear with Nazi associations. Just sayin'. And spittin'.

I am currently reading "The Bolter" by Frances Osborne. I have just learned about Ben Tillet, who organized the London dockworkers in the early 1900's.

kewl.

the docklands is unrecognisable now from what it was.
The traditional docks and the workers are another topic i have to read up on - london has too much history :p

The Nazis found many meek, quiet men in Poland, France et al, to accompany them in their genocide goals.

re: #272 Obdicut

It's more heinous. And it doesn't have to do with education level, but how they went about the genocide.

I remember reading the account of an Holocaust survivor. She said that having an S.S. officer knock you to the ground with no rage in his eyes signified the unique brutality of the Nazis. I don't know if that goes towards what your saying, but that is what this conversation reminds me of.

re: #287 prairiefire

Is a cold, Teutonic genocidal body worse than a hatchet chopped body?

No. That's not in the least the point.

There are distinctions between bloody, hatchet massacres, and the trains, the camps. Neither is better or worse. But the Nazis emerged from an educated, Western country. We should always remember that.

re: #287 prairiefire

No. This isn't a moral judgment, at least not on my part. I am trying to parse this is my head. Maybe I am applying my own person to person feelings to an issue like genocide that is too large and complex to be truly analogous. I have been angry enough to what to hit someone and hurt them. I think rage can be an all encompassing emotion that leads to unspeakable actions. But to not be angry or emotionally charged and still want to deliberately hurt another person, only to hurt them? I suppose it just seems inhuman.

Maybe "savages" fit better on the bus sign than "genocidal highly educated organized killers"? That's what I'm thinkin'.

The Hutus, I believe, held as strong convictions in their superiority to the Tutsis, as the Germans did over every other race on the planet.
General question~ What level of conviction in your principles does it take to murder with impunity?

I would need more time to articulate my ideas better. I should not have injected myself into it. The analogies (I think a lot in analogies) in my head may not apply.

I will admit that some of my reaction to this conversation is based on a sense/feeling that the Holocaust was worse in some way than just a savage genocidal spree. But why is one mass killing worse than another?

293 Obdicut  Tue, Dec 21, 2010 7:27:59pm

re: #292 sizzleRI

I don't think there's any 'worse'. There is 'different'.

So was Pam being too kind to the Nazis? Or was it a poor description?

I wouldn't worry too much about it..... killing is killing....... there are some here that love to debate minutia so much they expect everyone to gasp at their next "profound" counter post. Next you'll see an argument over the length of wind farm blades..... oh wait... that happened.
