You still have barely enough time to get in on the awesome last minute holiday bargains at Amazon’s Top Holiday Deals page, and the Holiday Toy List for the kids. When you click on an item’s Amazon page, you’ll see a message at the top telling you whether you can still have it delivered in time for Christmas.

(Note: we get a small commission from Amazon’s Associates program for everything you buy, if you follow one of our links.)

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good vehicle GPS system? The reviews at Amazon for the Garmin and TomTom devices are very confusing, with some reviewers giving the product 5 stars (greatest ever!) while others give the same product 1 star (this sucks!)

GPS systems are pretty similar. Consumers rates the Garmin Nuvi3760T as their top model, but right below that are two Tom Tom units, followed by another two Garmins.

Some of the models have bluetooth, and others have traffic updates (but a friend's experience with traffic features isn't so hot.

Pamela Geller is calling for the release of convicted spy Jonathan Pollard

Pollard's sentence is an abomination. Pure anti-semitism.

Ugh.

Yea I just got my wife a Garmin..... I agree with you on the reviews. I kinda closed my eyes and pointed at one.

Last month my wife drove to LAX from San Diego and ended up in San Fernando...... she really needs one.

I recently ordered Charcuterie: The Craft of Salting, Smoking, and Curing and a grinder attachment. I can't wait to make some sausage.

re: #4 Killgore Trout

Pollard was convicted on espionage, but there is now some evidence that Cap Weinberger attributed to Pollard in damaging US national security and may have resulted in the death of agents overseas, was actually the result of espionage carried out by Ames and Hansen. A reevaluation of his case should be in order and like many things, Geller goes overboard in calling this anti Semitism.

And even when you get a GPS, you should still carry a map of the area (and know how to read maps) because GPS systems can still send you onto routes not meant for regular driving - mine took me on to an unimproved road unsuitable for anything less than a high clearance SUV when in AZ.

We had a Garmin that did a great job, now I use the built in GPS on my android phone and love it, gave the Garmin to my step son...... only have to keep track of one device and i can read LGF where ever I am at the time..........standalone GPS units are going the way of the vinyl record

Gop succeeds in reducing 9-11 responders healthcare by half, after 5 years they're on their own....
Tentative Deal Reached on 9/11 Health Bill

Lawmakers for both parties met late into Tuesday night and again Wednesday morning to work on the details of the revised $4.3 billion package, a reduction from the original $7.4 billion legislation.

The bill would provide five years of health-care coverage and reopen a compensation program for those who became ill after working on the toxic debris pile or living and working nearby.

Disgraceful.

12 lawhawk  Wed, Dec 22, 2010 10:35:39am

OT:
Zadroga 9/11 compensation bill may be approved this afternoon after Senate reached a compromise - reducing the package to $4.3 billion (originally $7+ billion).

The scaled-down $4.3 billion agreement to aid ill 9/11 responders is set to be approved by the Senate as soon as Wednesday afternoon.

The initial Zadroga bill called for a 10-year, $7.4 billion treatment and compensation package. To win GOP support, the proposal was trimmed down to 5 years at $4.3 billion.

The last-minute deal also opens the 9/11 Victims' Compensation Fund, but caps lawyers fees at 10%.

And it bars ailing responders from double-dipping on payouts from the recent 9/11 health settlement.

I don't really think they expect him to be released. Everybody spies on everyone else but they all know the penalties for getting busted. I think it's more outrageous for Americans to call for his release. It's a matter of loyalty.

Usually we do a Yahoo printout...... but it seemed like such a straight shot up the 405 to the "really big airport" I didn't think she'd have any trouble... but she's new to the US...... You are absolutely right..... always have a back-up.

What is your monthly cellphone rate? If I upgrade my phone to include any online apps, T-Mobile will increase my monthly rate by $30.

If there was one moment to step up and do the right thing, this is it. The selflessness of those who helped should be met with selflessness on our part in supporting them in illness.

re: #11 Killgore Trout

Not exactly on their own. And it doesn't mean that Congress wont go back and reopen the fund, just as they're about to do with this measure. What it does is it leaves the VCF open for another five years to allow for new claims- which allows responders who become ill up to 13/14 years after the attacks to file claims. The health registry will also be funded.

Mind you that there are still questions about what ailments are actually attributable to Ground Zero exposures. Proponents of the Zadroga bill say that hundreds have died from Ground Zero exposures, while epidemiologists and medical experts are divided on that.

What will be interesting is how people who were involved in the 9/11 suit with the City respond - with no double dipping, some may lose out on the additional compensation via the VCF. That's going to be a major source of trouble.

All the major wireless companies sock it to customers with data plans for smartphones that tack anywhere from $15 to $30 or more for data. Because they can.

re: #15 Alouette

Thru AT&T my data plan is additional $15, at that rate it would offset the costof a GPS unit for a year or more. I dont have to remember to take the GPS with me, the unit isnt left in my car, and playing with the phone is a lot of fun.

I noticed I qualified for a "free" upgrade but unless I "upgrade" to the exact same phone that I now have (I dunno, get it in silver or pink?) T-Mobile will increase my phone bill by $30. So fuck them. Or me.

I find them the most useful for things like looking up a bussiness phone number to inquire about a price and if they have it in stock, befor I drive there and get an answer i dont like.

I have always felt that I more than recoup the cost of my home internet, and mobile data plans just by being able to price shop onine.

Unless you have a qwerty keypad, sending a text on a regular phone keypad is Teh Suck. There is some algorithm called "T9" that just keeps putting out gibberish, and when you enter text in alpha mode it's very cumbersome.

My son is married and living in another state, WTF is he still on my cellphone plan!

Because it could be cheaper to keep him on your plan.

A nationwide friends and family package could save you money - you have your base (primary line), and additional lines are just $9.99 (plus whatever fees you add on - like the data plans). That's how it works with VZ Wireless.

I use the land line for calling my kids in Canada and Israel. The international rates for the land line are quite reasonable, if we called on the cell phone it would cost a fortune!

It took my wife and I a while to adjust after we removed the signal pyres from the mountains surrounding our house, but we have found over time that we can weather the inconvenience of not having to light the beacons when we wish to have friends over for dinner.

Ditto. I've been using Amazon for at least a decade, but just signed up for Prime a couple of months ago. If I'd known how much more convenient it would be, I'd have signed up long ago. It's worth every penny if you're a regular Amazon shopper (I probably average 2-3 orders per month).
