Hawaii Gov. Abercrombie: ‘I Was Here When That Baby Was Born’

US News • Views: 27,240

Los Angeles Times writer Michael Memoli has more on Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie’s announced intention to debunk the Birthers:

Reporting from Honolulu — Neil Abercrombie knew Barack Obama’s parents when the future president was born here in 1961, and he has been aggravated by the so-called birther movement, which alleges Obama was not born in the United States and thus should be expelled from office.

Now Abercrombie has an office of his own — he became governor of Hawaii on Dec. 6. — and he intends to do something about it.

What, exactly, is unclear. But in an interview this week at the state Capitol, he left little doubt that torpedoing the conspiracy theorists was a priority.

“What bothers me is that some people who should know better are trying to use this for political reasons,” said Abercrombie, 72. “Maybe I’m the only one in the country that could look you right in the eye right now and tell you, ‘I was here when that baby was born.’ “

Abercrombie’s exactly right, of course. But this isn’t just a run of the mill conspiracy theory, it’s an astoundingly brain-dead conspiracy theory, driven in no small part by sheer racism. It’s doubtful that any amount of evidence or rational argument will ever “torpedo” this bad craziness, because it isn’t rational and it isn’t based on evidence. And a whole lot of people on the right believe it with all their hearts.

It should always be noted that one of the main proponents of this idiocy in the right wing blogosphere, right from the beginning, has been Pamela Geller. Who could ever forget her “technical expert” known only as “techdude,” and his hilariously bad “forensic analysis?”

This and the "stolen election" have to be the two most astoundingly idiotic conspiracy theories out there.

As I said last night, I truly appreciate where Abercrombie is coming from, but I'm not sure there's a whole lot he can do.

Lingle's approach was, I think, correct, and it got her absolutely nowhere. And she was a Republican.

This guy is a Democrat, and an admitted friend of the family. He's completely without credibility as far as the nuts are concerned. Also, NOTHING he can release will convince them that they are mistaken. I remember when we had a few nirthers around here. They'd go on for hours about how a 'Certificate of Live Birth' didn't mean that Obama was actually born in Honolulu, even though it said he was born in Honolulu.

What I would like is for any politicians or prominent people espousing this stupidity to meet with severe coolness from their colleagues, but as for convincing the crazy people of the country...I don't think Abercrombie has a hope in heck.

I have two birth certificates. Both have the same information on them. One was issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and has only the basic information on it. The other was issued by the hospital. It too has the basic information on it in beautiful calligraphy. I hate to think what someone with a twisted mind would think.

I wonder why so many conspiracy theories are so obviously slanted towards fitting a right-wing worldview lately. Take global warming denialists for instance: Those trashing scientific research as a big hoax trying to scare earth's population into a One-World-Government are the same people who will believe any scare story out there regarding water fluoridation or "chemtrails".

The only one that I can think of as of late that seems to resonate more with the left is the whole "cell phone towers cause cancer" spiel.

Like quitting smoking. Could also employ something like Birther Transplant Surgery. It's a type of brain surgery that replaces the Birther Region of the brain and is replaced by a genetically modified slice from the brain a chimpanzee. Or maybe an iBirthermaker™ which is like a pacemaker but sends electrical impulses to the Birther Region of the brain when the patient has birther thoughts.

No perceived gain in that right now. Proposing something other than opposition causes friction between the crazies demanding purity and the sane people who want results. The GOP will have serious trouble taking action till the crazies get taken down a peg or two.

45 researchok  Sat, Dec 25, 2010 1:17:44pm

Birthirism isn't a compulsion people have to deal with or a disorder that is unwanted or resented.

Birthirism is sought out, welcomed and embraced. There are communities of like minded people who support and endorse each other's beliefs. Unlike religion, birthirism requires no orthodoxy in in tenet or dogma- only a belief in the core, identifying tenet.

Birthirism is just another example of mainstreaming a conspiracy theory

If he does not deny it when the trial actually starts, yes. And if he does deny it, I wonder how the prosecution is going to present the case in order to convict him. If they only have his bragging, I figure it will be tough. But of course I don't know whether Manning will want to take that risk and deny the act, so it's idle speculation. I am sure the prosecution is considering the possibility and is right now working on getting together as much evidence as they can above and beyond Manning's confession by bragging.

Ah, now I remember. The irony of the deployment of so many NKVD units to the western parts of the USSR was that most of them were able to carry in their reign of terror for 4 years (moving west in 1939) only to be overrun by the Germans in 1941. Most of the NKVD killers were in their own turn slaughtered by the Germans who had their own order to annihilate any NKVD units encountered.

I have been reading that 00447 actually was carried out very harshly in the Russian Far East. But of course it was only a fraction of the whole that was the Great Terror.

And AFAIK, Political Commissars were only required to be members of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, not of the NKVD.

Nothing like a cheerful little read. The quotas, especially the Category 1, are puzzling. The quotas are maximums, and the reason for a ceiling on shootings is not immediately apparent.

From Yezhov, we can dismiss humanitarian concerns. A shortage of ammunition seems unlikely.

Any thoughts?

In the original order, the quotas were expressively called mere guiding values based on statistical data that nevertheless could not independently be overstepped. I think the quotas were an instrument by the central government in order to keep the operation under control. Raising of quotas had to be approved by the Lubyanka. Lots of local party leaders requested raising of quotas for their district in a competition to deliver the highest number of purged delinquents to the central government. These requests usually were granted.

He must be the one that arranged for Barak to meet and become tutored by Frank Marshall Davis, who then sent him overseas to receive training in Islamic doctrine... and then the Ayers/Emmanuel cabal, in conjunction with Abercrombie, had him returned to the United States, a tabula rasa, a clean slate, void of any exceptional Americans ideas, and the Marxist doctrine was programmed into him and he was released in the city of Chicago, disguised as a humble community organizer, but little did his circle of friends know that this was a decades long subversive plot to bring down the United States by introducing healthy food into the schools of our country.

You are correct about 'the right' but GOP candidates in HI are more... well.... what's that word..... moderate. Maybe it's because it's a blue state, maybe it's because they really are moderate or just aligned with the community. Either way I was glad to not find any of that ucky GOP stuff that was making the news on their platforms.

But I sure as hell was asking myself if they were birthers/creationist/AGW deniers. The taint is there, I don't know if it will ever go away.

ALL obama would have to do is be honest enough to make the real birth certificate available...not the easily gotten certificate of live birth...and prove that he is Hawaiian born. Why he won't do this is beyond me if he is telling the truth. Why has he spend so much time, effort and someone else's money to hide his birth certificate, school records and health records only encourages questions to be asked.

re: #137 jaunte

I never said they were fake. I recall reading that others had obtained certificates of live birth in Hawaii at that time when their children were born on the mainland, but I do not have any links to support it. The birth certificate should provide the name of the mother, father, name and identification of the child, the delivering physician and hospital of birth. The document I have seen provided when this question first came up did not provide all that information. I am skeptical enough to ask why none of these records is readily available. For most of us it is.

141 aagcobb  Sun, Dec 26, 2010 2:03:00pm

The case of Lt.Col. Lakin is a fascinating case of how an otherwise intelligent person can blind himself to facts which don't fit his ideology. An M.D. threw away a 17 year military career and his pension, will spend six months a Leavenworth, and let down his comrades, some of whom may have died in Afghanistan because he wasn't there to treat them, all because Lakin decided he was entitled to his own personal copy of the President's birf cetifkat.

That proves nothing. You have to provide evidence that the Cert of Live Birth and the multiple newspaper announcements are frauds. You cannot. Lack of school records as proof of evidence he wasn't born here? That's a separate subject, not relevant.

The lack of accounting of a Cert of Live Birth is a non-sequitor.
