The Stewart-Murrow Convergence?

Media • Views: 24,406

I don’t know if Jon Stewart is the new Edward R. Murrow (or if anyone ever will be) but he certainly deserves a vote of thanks for his role in the 9/11 bill passage.

Did the bill pledging federal funds for the health care of 9/11 responders become law in the waning hours of the 111th Congress only because a comedian took it up as a personal cause?

And does that make that comedian, Jon Stewart — despite all his protestations that what he does has nothing to do with journalism — the modern-day equivalent of Edward R. Murrow?

jon Stuart does some good things, but he's a comedian, not a serious reporter like Murrow was.

2 Irenicum  Sun, Dec 26, 2010 6:47:25pm

He may be a comedian, but he's also a person who actually cares and isn't shy about letting that be known. For that I'm extremely grateful.

I don't particularly care whether Stewart is the new Murrow or not, but it's a damn shame that a entertainer (even one as good as Stewart) had to help shame Congress (and the GOP, in particular) into acting on this...it should have been a non-partisan no-brainer, but leave it to the TPer-courting GOP to play obstructionists.

4 Irenicum  Sun, Dec 26, 2010 6:54:45pm

Oh, and Charles, thanks so much for the hat tip on the Hawaii birther story. Life has been crazy for me so I'm not around as much. In fact right now my house feels like it's about to be blown over in this blizzard.

5 Charles Johnson  Sun, Dec 26, 2010 6:54:53pm

The GOP's obstructionism on this issue was absolutely despicable, and that's what Jon Stewart recognized. Good for him for refusing to play politics as usual, and calling out the assholes for what they were.

Stewart himself said it best: it's not that his show is converging towards politics, it's that politics is converging towards comedy.

He's partially correct but the real problem the that the audience/voters need to be "informed" with jokes, music, skits and flashy zinger graphics in segments no longer than a few minutes.
Serious news doesn't exist because there isn't a serious audience.

It's a cultural problem and I suppose it's relatively new that we no longer celebrate intellect. Pop culture has always been kinda dopey but it also has always existed alongside a more serious "adult" intellectual culture that valued art, poetry, philosophy, reading education, etc.
I suppose it started with the youth culture of the 50's. Today even most adults think and behave like children.
It might change but if it doesn't some other country will step up and take our place as a superpower.

I see we still have birthers going at it downstairs. Oh well, they'll never get anywhere but they don't care.

As for Mr. Stewart - I doubt the role of Murrow can be recreated in another time, but certainly Stewart has made a (good) name for himself.

Digressing: I lament often the state of the "documentary" on American television - most are aimed at, it would appear, a very young audience given the very short segments per camera shot/story-line, probably to go with the very short attention spans of the viewers. Then, the narrator/story will repeat itself over and over. Many of the (non-British, non-German made) Discovery channel and even NatGeo stuff is like that.

Americans have decided they don't want information, they want entertainment.

Which gets me back to Stewart; he has discovered what it takes in this day to discuss serious issues - wrap them in humor.

He probably deserves an award (or two) for this.

We have contracted-out clumsy brain tasks to clay tablets, parchment, and laptops. Our brains aren't shrinking as much as ephemeralizing. (Neanderthals ran a couple hundred cc's larger than us, but they had to remember everything.)

I'm heading off to the youth shelter again tonight for the third day in a row. Today was such as quiet day for me that I'm actually looking forward to it, plus I have yet to find employment after my recent move so I might as well keep busy.

40 years ago it was possible to set yourself up with a drafting table, parallel guide, templates, lamp, and stool and open up a design business for several hundred dollars. Now, you have to spend several thousand dollars for a computer and software.

As computing advances and we see more and more super computers we'll eventually see more traditional design positions become obsolete. Model builders are becoming obsolete with the onset of 3D printers. Rendering and 3D modeling is becoming more and more automated.

What once took years of practice on the drawing board utilizing pencil, pen and ink has become replaced with keyboard entries or routines. This of course will reduce the need for the keen process of cognitive spatial orientation.

Apple drops WikiLeaks app, Google keeps it

BOSTON (December 27, 2010) : Apple Inc has joined a growing number of US companies that have severed ties with WikiLeaks, removing an application from its online store that gave users access to the controversial website's content.

But Google Inc, which operates the second-largest online mobile applications store, has kept more than half a dozen apps available on its Android Marketplace that make it easier to access the confidential US government documents WikiLeaks had released on its site.

The two distinct approaches highlight how it is far tougher for developers to get on the iPhone's platform than Android's. Some of the Android programmes provide direct access to the WikiLeaks cables, and one of them even alerts users whenever a new leaked document from the WikiLeaks repository is made public.

I foresee a time when clients will be able to work within a 3D environment accessing an AI architect to guide them through their parameters (3D goggle and gloves). You would be able to move walls and floors using hand movements and using voice commands to add or remove features, period styles, colors, furniture, etc. That would be an interactive system. Another way would be a robot architect of sorts which could combine the previous idea.

You do still need the artists vision. Every great architect (IMHO) has had the interpretation skill of understanding what the client wants, and making it a reality. See John Lautner, for the best. LOTS of Lautner's work in the area here. He used true craftsmen to execute his & his clients visions.

What once took years of practice on the drawing board utilizing pencil, pen and ink has become replaced with keyboard entries or routines. This of course will reduce the need for the keen process of cognitive spatial orientation.

But people now have to fit a week's stuff into smaller carry-on bags, or a whole family's worth of stuff into a much smaller trunk than when our parents took us on driving vacations -- spatial visualization is still a practiced skill.

To be sure, Stewart brought the 9/11 responders back into the spotlight, and just in the nick of time.

But to be fair, Fox's Shep Smith definitely gets an assist due to his naming names of the Republicans who wouldn't even deign to appear on Fox and explain their opposition.

While Stewart led the way, Smith's comments on Fox may have been the clincher. It would have been easy for those pols to dismiss Stewart's efforts, but catching heat on Fox may have scared those Republicans even more.

Stewart made plenty of mentions of Fox in his original segment, practically ordering Huckabee (his guest that night) to tell them to give the story more coverage (his basic gist was, "you're perfectly capable of being a 9/11 outrage machine when it suits you, like on the Cordoba Center controversy, so why not on this issue?")

re: #9 Killgore Trout

Serious news doesn't exist because there isn't a serious audience.

I think it's an odd form of desperation more than anything. We're confronted with extremely complicated problems that most people just don't have the capacity to really understand or do anything about, and that's frightening.

So they abstract their worries into Survivor-like popularity battles on 24-hour "news" channels, confident that everything will turn out okay if they can just establish how much the other guy deserves to be voted off the island.

The loss of spatial reasoning is arguable since we are looking at the evolution of man that began when he was staring at the stone walls of his cave. Any noticeable change would require millions of years of evolution if we have indeed peaked -- going from the hand crafted work of pencil drawings to pushing buttons.

If I want to draw a circle on a computer I typically enter the letter "c" and enter the radius or diameter and the circle is drawn automatically. Template provided another shortcut. However, a perfectly hand drawn circle requires good hand eye coordination that is processed, of course, through the brain.

That we will need less people in the future is a reality, IMO. This will extend beyond the manufacturing sector and well into the service economy and the higher intellectual endeavors.

News organizations -- network entertainment divisions for that matter -- had a lot more leeway when you could count the stations on your fingers. And before VCRs, etc.

How many of you are old enough to remember the original broadcast of "Roots"? The only way to watch a TV show back then was to sit down in front of the TV at the time the network told you to. There were the 3 networks, big cities had a few indie stations, and that was it. The next morning, *everybody* you knew at school or the office would be talking about the episode, because some 30% of the country had watched.

Think about flying an F-22 as it does today by hand. That is without the "wire guided" system. It is inherently unstable and can't be done. The same is true with GPS navigation. Pilots are becoming less knowledgeable of traditional navigation techniques. Things are becoming more and more automatic.

Interesting. I did see the original segment he did, but didn't see the Huck interview.

I got my college degree in broadcast journalism back in the 70. It's a sad situation that a comedian has to be the one to hold politicians' feet to the fire on this. Murrow would hang his head in shame if he were to witness what his profession has atrophied into.

I read somewhere that the max penalty for rape in Sweden has been somewhere around 4 years.
Section 1 of the Swedish Penal Code

'A person who, by violence or threat involving or appearing to the threatened person as imminent danger, forces the latter to have sexual intercourse or to engage in a comparable sexual act, shall be sentenced for rape to imprisonment for at least two and at most six years. Rendering the person unconscious or otherwise placing the person in a similarly helpless state shall be regarded as equivalent to violence.

If in view of the nature of the violence or the threat and the circumstances in other respects the offence is considered less serious, a sentence to imprisonment for at most four years shall be imposed.

If the offence is grave, a sentence to imprisonment for at least four and at most ten years shall be imposed for aggravated rape. In judging whether the offence is grave, special consideration shall be given to whether the violence involved a danger to life or whether the person who had committed the act had inflicted serious injury or serious illness or, having regard to the method used or the victim’s youth or otherwise, exhibited particular ruthlessness or brutality.'

This doesn't seem like a grave offence on the part of Assange so it would probably be less than 4 years if found guilty.

Swedish Penal Code, Chapter 6 Section 1 (.pdf):

A person who by assault or otherwise by violence or by threat of a criminal act forces another person to have sexual intercourse or to undertake or endure another sexual act that, having regard to the nature of the violation and the circumstances in general, is comparable to sexual intercourse, shall be sentenced for rape to imprisonment for at least two and at most six years.

This shall also apply if a person engages with another person in sexual intercourse or in a sexual act which under the first paragraph is comparable to sexual intercourse by improperly exploiting that the person, due to unconsciousness, sleep, intoxication or other drug influence, illness, physical injury or mental disturbance, or otherwise in view of the circumstances in general, is in a helpless state.

If, in view of the circumstances associated with the crime, a crime provided for in the first or second paragraph is considered less aggravated, a sentence to imprisonment for at most four years shall be imposed for rape.

what bugs me are the dismissals and denials of the form

1) he's just a comedian.
2) anyone who gets their news for him is lacking.
3) he's not a journalist.

All of those are true and false at the same time.

He purports to just be a comedian, but have you seen comedians handle interviews as graciously and he? Watch his interviews (over the years) with John McCain, or Bill Kristol, or anyone that is politically in a different camp than he -- obviously there are exceptions: there was no "grace" when he went on crossfire and handed Tucker Carlson his own ass -- he's not a fan of Jonah Goldberg and he didn't handle that interview well (but, hey -- who is?)
In any case, I contend the nations, liberals in particular, has a lot to learn from his ability to see and internalize the views of the other side of the political spectrum.

I can't imagine someone watching John Stewart and NOT having the curiosity to get information from other sources.

What is journalism vs. simple punditry? The digging up of new information that others don't have and presenting it in a clear and unbiased fashion? TDS has a trundle of interns (trundle being the collective noun for interns, at least I just made it up so) whom scour the news for contrary and misinformation which is presented (albeit in the tone of humor) generally unvarnished (by unvarnished I mean, TDS doesn't generally doesn't attempt to paint someone with a view that isn't already theirs -- there is enough comedy in the things people believe rather than make up false positions to knock them down).

yeah, i have a lot of respect for John Stewart.

From the earliest Greece comedies social inequities was the subject matter that was lampooned. For example Lysistrata. Comedy has always been the standard bearer for truth. Just because not all comedians follow this path does not mean those that do are the exception to the rule. I submit the comedians that do not speak truth to power are the ones who are treading the wrong path.

I'm coming from the position of being a guy into underground extreme music that has a lot of care (despite what some may claim) put into its production, mastering and dynamics, it's pretty atrocious to me that mainstream music is clipped and slaughtered in this manner, because I listen to music on headphones, and the aural space and relative dynamics of heavy music are pretty much the core of what I like about music

but it's salesmanship and cutting through shit on the radio, music as carnival barker, as advertisement, not as music. Like fast food. you can't tell someone to stop eating mcdonalds, they have to stop eating it on their own.

I loves me some Bob Power. From his interview with Ego Trip magazine:

A lot of people seem to sleep on the importance of the engineers' role-

-ahh, no. I'm sorry. Even as a producer I'll say generally what I do when I produce, and it depends on the project, is I'm there to make the people into the best version of what they really are. If you are a producer and you try to change what somebody is, then you're fucking up and actually you're fucking them up too. But as an engineer, I consider myself a facilitator - helping people realize their ideas, and that's all.

But at the same time, the right engineer can make the difference.

It can really help, but that's where it crosses the line of what the relationship is about, and I have to be careful when I work with people. I believe in functions, and everybody has a function at a different time, and if I'm sweeping the floors, I'm gonna shut my mouth and sweep the floors so I don't get in anyone's way. If I'm engineering, I'm going to be as supportive as I can, but at the same time, if there's something going down that I really, really think is fucked up, I'll say "Listen, are you guys sure. Take another listen to this. This is why I think it's a little bit funny. Tell me if you think I'm wrong." And half the time people say "No, I hear you, but I love it that way" or "Oh, you're right that might bug us, let's try that again."

One thing I noticed on my last visit to NYC was a lot of the taxis are hybrids. That has to be a good thing.

The City is mandating that new taxis added to the fleet must meet higher MPG requirements. The next generation taxis that are being considered must also meet higher MPG.

Some drivers have found that the hybrids aren't able to take the pounding as well as the Crown Vics, but others find that they're saving some money on gas. It's a mixed bag.

Of course, on a day like today, you'll be hard pressed to find any taxis on the road with everyone digging out from the massive snowstorm. We got about 2 feet (much higher drifts) in my corner of NJ.

re: #81 Gus 802

That would be programed into the system. Much like robotic medical doctors and surgery of the future. The same as robots have replaced industrial craftsman.

"I can't define it but I know it when I see it."

While that was about porn it also applies to art and a number of other human interactions in which human taste is a factor. And as long as it can't be defined, the robots can't do it.

Now they can do the grunt work. They can let a person without the years of learning the grunt work bring their inspiration to others much more easily. But for the foreseeable future they can't cross that particular line.

And when they do we'll probably need to be discussing whether AIs are People.

Crown Vics run on ethanol and natural gas, although I think ethanol is a really, really stupid idea. Food should not be used for fuel.

re: #277 reloadingisnotahobby

In Manhattan they will sometimes dump the snow in the rivers. Or, they'll use these massive snow melters - particularly in Lower Manhattan and around Times Square. Around the rest of the area? They haul it off to unused parking lots or just pile it up on the sides of the road. If you've parked on the streets, you're pretty much screwed - you'll be plowed in (if the plows have managed to get through).

Fire in the hole!

Attention Cathie Black: After 13 Years in 'Rubber Room,' Accused NYC Molester Makes $97,101

Officially known as "reassignment centers," the New York City Department of Education sticks teachers accused of misconduct into "rubber rooms," where they wait, paid and with no responsibility other than to show up, until their cases are resolved. This particular bureaucratic nightmare has been the subject of countless reports, including an extensive examination in The New Yorker, and an entire documentary featured on This American Life. But today's New York Post features one particularly maddening story: Roland Pierre, 75, makes $97,101 a year. Rubber rooms used to be the problem of Joel Klein, the city's schools chancellor, but there's a new woman in charge. Let's hope she read today's paper.

Pierre was "permanently removed from the classroom" for allegedly inviting a sixth-grade girl into an empty classroom at PS 138 and molesting her. That was in 1997. Thirteen years later, the charges have been dropped and "a DOE disciplinary case was 'dropped on a technicality.'" But despite the shady details of the criminal case, the real crime is in dollars and cents:

The DOE has no required retirement age. Hired in 1986, Pierre could have retired at age 62. At his age, he can collect Social Security as well as his full salary, so his income may be close to $125,000 a year, sources said.

Continues.

Incidentally, that's a Village Voice link.

Of course, after a careful reading above, please notice that the "charges were dropped." I say that this man was wrongly removed from his position and put through hell for 13 years, probably unable to find any other employment if he wanted (considering the charges).

re: #380 BigPapa

Shame on IBD espousing hollow canards. My IQ dropped as I read it.

Well, here's a good IBD article:

ObamaCare Rationing Begins

Medicine: The FDA has reversed its approval of a widely used cancer drug approved in Europe to treat breast cancer on the grounds it doesn't provide a "sufficient" benefit. Let the terminally ill and their doctors decide.

One of the blessings of blocking the omnibus spending bill was that it included $1 billion for the implementation of ObamaCare.

Yet the first effects are still being felt, the latest being the Food and Drug Administration's revoking of regulatory approval of Avastin to treat late-stage breast cancer.

The reason given by the FDA was that the drug does not provide "a sufficient benefit in slowing disease progression to outweigh the significant risk to patients." What risk? These women are dying.

The drug buys them precious time, and the only risk they face is from an FDA saying "pull the plug."

On the same day the FDA channeled Dr. Kevorkian, its European counterpart, the European Medicines Agency, issued a statement approving Avastin for metastatic breast cancer.

Benefits of the drug, it said, "continue to outweigh the risks, because the available data have overwhelmingly shown to prolong progression-free survival of breast cancer patients without a negative effect on the overall survival."

So what say you, FDA? An agency overseeing the cost-conscious, government-run health care systems in the European Union says Avastin does provide sufficient benefit at little risk to the patient.

The annual cost, however, is a staggering $88,000 annually, and under ObamaCare cost trumps medical care. A prime decision is whether extending your life is worth the cost.

Consider that every year some 17,500 American women are prescribed Avastin by their practicing oncologists to treat their condition and prolong their life. Last October, the U.S. National Comprehensive Cancer Network, a group of 21 leading cancer centers that issues evidence-based medical guidelines, reaffirmed Avastin's efficacy in certain cases.

what bugs me are the dismissals and denials of the form

I said for years--I like the Daily Show because Jon Stewart makes the same face I did when I read the news. But his is funnier.

US slams Russia for Khodorkovsky verdict

[Link: www.google.com...]

WASHINGTON — The guilty verdict brought against Russian tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky will have a "negative impact on Russia's reputation," US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday.

The chief US diplomat said in a statement that Khodorkovsky's conviction in his second fraud trial "raises serious questions about selective prosecution -- and about the rule of law being overshadowed by political considerations."

Good, but ultimately impotent after the US selective prosecution and rule of law overshadowed by political considerations. Which is one of the main reasons I spit on Bush's merry gang and frown on Obama's "let's forget all this" stance. Wait for the Russian MID's angry tu quoque response.

saltfish is a breakfast staple in the Caribbean, served with akee, which cooks down to resemble and taste like, scrambled eggs...akee is a vegetable that grows on a tree with toxic seeds...grows wild all over Jamaica, same for breadfruit

we have a lot of Caribbeans in Bklyn... some of the food is outstanding!

Happy to oblige. ;)

So a cold spell in winter is proof that global warming isn't happening?
So... a heat wave in summer is proof that it is?
Weather does not equal climate.

I also like the suggestion that people have been told it will never, never be cold in winter again. No one said that, except those setting up fake conditions so they can knock them down.

Do you think the Obama administration has no "moral authority" because they refuse to investigate the Bush administration?

I got used to it since I've been reading for a longer time than I've been registered. I usually get when Walter is not being serious, but his point is often lost (and not only on me, I guess, since people often respond seriously).

re: #61 Dark_Falcon

How do you tune a whoopee cushion?

You don't... you buy them from the factory already tuned. You can tweak the tuning a bit by slightly shaving the rubber near the opening, similar to using a file on the reed of a diatonic harmonica, to sharpen or flatten the sound... but in general, you have to go with the factory tuning.

Amazon sells a book of tunes you can play on a set of tuned whoopee cushions. It has full charts, special characters on the musical staff indicating when you sit down on the cushion to produce the note, pauses designed to enable you to blow a new supply of air into the cushion... very interesting musical arrangements.

The first whoopee cushion concert I ever saw was at a Baptist church, it was an Christmas pageant, all religious tunes.
cool.

(one of my better creations)

I remember in the 50's and early 60's having the snow plows in Brooklyn push up so much snow on the streets, that every parked car all down the street, on both sides, were totally covered in a mound of snow. All you could see was a solid 6 foot hight mound down both sides of the street, and 50 cars buried underneath,

He wasn't alone. I am just sayin'.

“How Do They Sleep?” Shep Smith Blasts Congress Over 9/11 First Responders Bill.

A wonderful moment of pure outrage–and classic television–from Shepard Smith on Fox News Friday afternoon as he and Chris Wallace waited for President Obama’s tax cut signing ceremony.

Discussing the amount of money on “tax cuts for billionaires who don’t need them,” Smith railed against the very same lawmakers who somehow couldn’t get relief passed for 9/11 first responders.

How do they sleep at night after this vote on Ground Zero first responders from 9/11? Are they going to get that done, or are we going to leave these American heroes out there to twist in the wind?
