I only have the two CDs of his that I got out of the $2 bin across the street. I can put either of them on and leave them on for five or six hours straight, which is my test for delightful music.

Still, a couple more choices would be good to have....

I never heard of him until I "met" him here, sadly after he was already dead. Thanks for the introduction, and thanks for posting his daughter's video a couple of weeks ago. Having a father who can sing like that must have freed her to sing any way she wants, and I'm going to need to hear more of her stuff too.

Jazz mentor Billy Taylor dies at 89

Billy Taylor, a leading jazz musician and composer who introduced the genre to wider audiences as a TV broadcaster and teacher, died Tuesday in New York of heart failure, age 89.

The Kennedy Centre for the performing arts in Washington DC, where Taylor had been the artistic director for jazz since 1994, called him "a great statesman and ambassador for jazz throughout the world".

"We are grateful for Dr Taylor's devotion, friendship and his influence on jazz," Darrell Ayers, vice-president of education and jazz at the Kennedy Centre, said in a statement.

Taylor was born in Greenville, North Carolina in 1921 and made his way to New York where he played with jazz greats Ben Webster, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald among others.

Six detained in chemical wine scandal in China: state media

Six people have been detained, several wineries shut down and bottles pulled from shelves in China after authorities found wine containing several chemical additives, state media said Monday.

I almost bought some frozen Mackerel the other day until I noticed it was packaged in China. The fish might be ok because the processing is minimal but you'd have to be insane to eat any food product imported from China.

Speaking of bogus stories....
Congress to demand answers from TSA in airport security flaws

Exactly one month after Chris Liu posted videos to YouTube showing what he calls "critical security flaws," the new chairman of a House subcommittee said he will call Transporation Security Administration (TSA) leaders to Capitol Hill for an explanation.

"We're spending of millions of dollars on technology, but we're not doing the basics," said Congressman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who will chair the subcommitee on National Security, Homeland Defense and Foreign Operations. "We've got to be doing the basics to secure the airlines."
...
Chaffetz is not alone in his call to action.

Outgoing Congressman Peter Hoekstra, R-Michigan, is the Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee and had a similar reaction soon after the videos went viral.

In California, Congressman Dan Lungren, R-Sacramento, said other committees will look into the matter as well.

There is a hard fact, though Owens gets it wrong: Chris Christie commuted a prison sentence that had been unjustly imposed by a judge with some sort of vendetta. It's noteworthy that the author of the other major book that digs into Obama's past and draws unfavorable conclusions, Stanley Kurtz's Radical in Chief (which I've actually read) stays well away from the points D'Souza dives into. That's right folks, Kurtz (who believes Obama to be a socialist) actual;y goes so far as to say that there isn't any hard evidence to link Obama's ideology to his father's beliefs. When those who would normally be your ally are calling your central thesis to be without factual basis you gone far over the line. December 28, 2010 (Washington, D.C.) – Atheists, agnostics, humanists, and other nontheistic Washington, D.C. residents will have no representation at Mayor-Elect Vincent Gray’s first official inaugural event—an ecumenical prayer service entitled “One City … Praying Together” at 8 a.m. Sunday, January 2, 2011.

That's state sanctioned religion.

[Link: www.examiner.com...]

Did you or S.B. put this up on the Pages the other day?

I don't understand "first inaugural event" which seems to be a prayer service after the inauguration? Why would the atheists want to attend a prayer service?

I think that's the gimmick. They get you to but stuff you don't want/ don't need and it gets you into the store to buy other stuff on impulse. You never see coupons for onions, beans, flour or molasses. That's what you should be buying.

Report: Mexican army planted weapon on dead American

the conclusion of the Mexican military investigation, which was forwarded to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico and obtained by CNN, indicates that an assault rifle found in Proctor's possession was planted.

According to the document, a soldier alerted his commander that the dead American was not armed. In response, the commander "proceeded to send another officer with an AR-15 rifle, in order to be placed in the vehicle, using the hands of the deceased to try to simulate an attack against military personnel, and that he had died when the attack was countered," the document states.

CVS has a fairly good selection of cereals and boxed products and a modest frozen section. I sometimes shop there for small amounts of supplies. They have good prices and I can get there easily by bus. Given that if I shop there I normally buy milk and soda, I use a taxi to get back.

"To pray" means to make a humble request. That's all.
Those of us who believe, make our humble requests to God.
But those who are non-beleivers, can also make requests, or wishes, or whatever.

I'm sorta of the mind that an ecumenical prayer service, where folks will presumably be making their requests for a successful next few years for their city, should just go ahead and include everybody. Makes no sense to me to leave out anyone.

I think that's the gimmick.

I'm not sure I'd call it a "gimmick", but yes, it is advertising at it's most powerful: inducing you to buy what otherwise you would not.

I did notice that the author (who I thought was female, not male) had some Safeway store coupons for produce, with which she bought apples and carrots.

There's something like two months of entries and I didn't go through all of them.

I thought I'd post it here because some lizards mention they struggle to make ends meet, and thought someone might get some inspiration from it.

As for me - I'm still on my (weight reduction) ice cream + tuna diet. Works like a charm. I do buy, though, real ice cream and not the fake stuff.

I did find it inspiring. I'm always looking out for good ideas. Getting a decent cut of meat is also pretty pricey. Even low sodium lunch meat starts at $8.00/lb.

Part of my problem is that I'm not fond of cooking or shopping. I often come home late and tired.

I buy the canned fish. The foil packaging usually drives up the cost.

Because of the metal content I try to limit the tuna to a couple of times a week now, the salmon is better for you anyway (but costs more.)

Pink salmon can be kind of bland from can, unless you buy a good brand. Here is one without salt added that I've tried recently and found to be ok (actually, the best canned pink salmon I've found yet.) Hard to find locally so I got a case from Amazon, and I went for the freebie shipping ( super-saver) and it only took 2 days to my doorstep!

I prefer fresh salmon, but getting wild caught salmon down here at a decent price is hard. It does go on sale from time to time, and if I hit the seafood counter at the right time of day I can get a good piece at a decent price.

I don't agree. That event is for the faithful, and excluding the atheists seems appropriate to me.

The event is not for the faithful, it is for the people represented by the office being inaugurated. It marks the official beginning of the office holder's representation of and service to all their constituents, regardless of belief system or lack thereof. Making belief a prerequisite for witnessing the assumption of a government office tells the unbeliever that they have no representation in that office.

Oh, it does. The key to losing weight is simply to consume less energy than one expends. Ice cream may sound like not a diet food, but the real stuff has plenty of complete protein (along with the fat) because of the milk - which also becomes an important source of calcium. Additionally, because of all the fat it works as an appetite satiate also.

Sweet! I'm not a big fan of the salmon. I like white fish better and buy a fair amount of it, frozen. Mr. Moon likes the tuna.

I've taken to buying the Manischewitz soup packages. You can get them in the Jewish section of most groceries. 2 for $3.00 usually, makes a great soup and then I add in rice, veggies or pasta, sometimes chicken. Pretty hearty and easy.

On the eel - fresh eel sushi is delightful, with just a tiny tiny bit of hot radish sauce added to give a bit of punch.

Oh you said WHILE. I thought you said White. lol (it's late and I should have read more carefully).

I do love sushi and eel is always a fav. Big fan of Asian cooking too. We have a Vietnamese and Korean place in the neighborhood.

That's fine. But their view are rather unrealistic. As governor he would have to rely on the NJ state legislature. And hypothetically as president he would have to rely on congress. Governors, like presidents, aren't graced with all encompassing power. Retired police officers, federal officers or if you have a "justifiable need" (going before the sheriff and a judge) can get a CCW in New Jersey.

Thai.. yum yum.

I was in China in 2000 with my friend who was adopting. It was really hard to find an authentic restaurant. We were discouraged from going off on our own outside of walking distance. Everything near the hotels were Americanized. Although I will say, that hotel chef made the best scrambled eggs I have ever tasted. I wouldn't normally rave about something like that, but they were truly amazing. Maybe s/he added cream? Something. And we got dim sum at breakfast and lunch, but is that really Chinese? I thought it was Japanese. Maybe both.

We found one restaurant, we called the "bug restaurant". As you walked in, there were containers with different types of... critters. Some you ate and some they fed to the ones you ate. Not always easy to tell which was which. I think we ended up with chicken, rice and veggies :)

True, but Christie should at least work to create a law that allows people to lawfully transport firearms they are legally in possession of. New Jersey does have a serious problem there.

I haven't had dim sum in a long time, but yes, it is a type of Chinese food. Remember, China is a big country with several different regions (besides all the surrounding countries they've annexed over the centuries.)

As for Americanized food - that happens in Japan too. However with the Japanese penchant for weirdness they'll always add that little thing that will strike the American as out of place (like corn kernels and mayo on pizzas.)

I don't remember what that law was. Used to be something like carrying the rifle in the trunk unloaded. Back when we had a motorhome my father would bring along a 12 ga. shotgun and a lever action 30/30 inside the motorhome. Don't remember if they were always loaded but the ammo was always close at hand. We lived in NJ and even drove through Illinois with that. ;)

The other issue is that there are too many sheriffs and judges in that state who will never see "reasonable need". NJ's gun laws are bad. Chris Christie likely can't do anything about most of them, since he does have to pick his battles with care (lest he court the political fate of Arnold Schwarzenegger ), but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Illinois isn't too bad anymore. If your firearm is in a locked case with the ammo separate, you won't get in trouble here. You do need a Firearms Owner's Identification Card (FOID) to own a gun, but my state doesn't have the transport pitfalls that New Jersey does. I think NJ also treats handguns different from rifles in such laws.

A Cape May Democrat actually introduced a bill to liberalize the CCW law in NJ. Don't think anything became of that. You would get more support in South Jersey for that kind of law. Less so in the urban districts.

Someone tried to break in our house last week, a few days before Christmas. How's that for a Happy Holiday greeting?

My husband came home from work and the neighbor told him someone(s) had tried to get in to their back window. The neighbor behind them saw these guys and called the cops. When husband came home, he checked around the house and found the back door pulled open. It's the only one without a deadbolt (which we've already fixed) and an old door, but we had two chains on it. That, coupled with the dog, I'm assuming they gave up.

The windows are storm windows and no one's getting through them.

I drove with a .45 (not mine) in my car once in New Jersey. Took it with some friends to fire it at some field. I'm pretty sure I put it in the hatch (car was a hatchback). Fire it once in this gully and went deaf for about 5 minutes. Not really deaf but it was like being underwater.

Heh. Gun laws are seriously funny sometimes. Family can be even funnier... :(

Wisconsin is the only other state, as you well know DF, that has almost no way for a civilian to get a CCW permit. I believe that it's oversold by the right & the left - we don't end up with gunfights in the streets but we also do not end up with massive drops in crime that can't be explained in several other ways. I have no problem with CCW and won't say much more because of current WI law.

We do allow open carry and it is perfectly legal to hunt with my 4" barreled S&W 64 .38 special revolver. Towards that end I requested a shoulder holster (WWII pilot style repro) for Christmas. I received it but not without a bit of grief about if I were suddenly into that republican thing about having guns everywhere.

I'm more paranoid about the far right theocratic types than anything else. I think they're far more likely to do real "gun grabbing" in my lifetime than any liberal who is far more inclined to increasing the rest of our freedoms.

It's funny, isn't it?

hehe! For some inexplicable reason, my neighbor planted their mango next to the sidewalk. That's a pretty full tree and the fruit hangs out over the sidewalk. People were always taking the mangos so they trimmed it really tall. Now they can't get their own mangos, but the kids still try to climb the tree.

I think it's rude to just take it. If you want the fruit, you can ring the bell and ask. Most people will let you have it

We had 5 fruit trees when we bought the house. 4 were citrus and taken in the Big Citrus Scandal of 2002 (or 3), but the avocados weigh about 2 lbs and are fabulous.

I believe in most of that, except for the "any liberal who is far more inclined to increasing the rest of our freedoms" part. There are some on the left who are concerned with that, but their are also many misguided pacifists who try to write their prefers into law. There are also command and control type leftists like Barbara Boxer who want to arrange the world to suit their views and see freedom as a hinderance to same. A lot of the left still likes gun control, but like the theocrats, they are constrained by their coalition partners.

I worked with a guy that was Army artillery in Vietnam once. He had very bad hearing and I think he might have been deaf in one ear. He brought a guitar to Nam and the concussion blew out the top. I had some hearing loss from guitar (120 watts in a room will do that). I don't play anymore so I don't get the tinnitus that I would sometimes get. Occasionally it would flare up to a roar for about 5 minutes.
