Fear can sometimes be a useful emotion.
For instance, let's say you're an astronaut on the moon and you fear that
your partner has been turned into Dracula. The next time he goes out for the
moon pieces, wham!, you just slam the door behind him and blast off. He might
call you on the radio and say he's not Dracula, but you just say, "Think
again, bat man."

Mostly about money. I'm working on how to pay for things in January. Not going to get into details in public like this, but I do think I'll get through OK. February looks to be far better, with my tax refund and the commissions from January (which should be very good).

An interesting detail for those interested in Russian events in-depth. I've already written a page about the youth leader Yakemenko's ties to gangsters, now a former head of the Russian Interpol, militsiya general-major Vladimir Ovchinskij, who had dealt with radical youth movements decades ago, says in an interview to radio "Svoboda" ("Liberty"):
What has impressed me very strongly is that in the Russian government there is a person in the rank of a minister named Yakemenko. Twenty something years ago I had known him as one of the active members of the Lyubery group.
About Lyubery:
[Link: eng.globalaffairs.ru...]In the 1980s, a group of teenagers from underground weight-training clubs in Moscow surroundings, known as lyubery, took on a similar role and ideology under the auspices of the local police. In a span of no less than three years, this group beat and robbed members of the “pro-Western” youth subculture, yet not a single case was investigated to the end. Later, lyubery became one of the strongest criminal communities in the Moscow area.

Hey Sergey, what do you think has caused and is still causing the vast corruption in post-Soviet countries?
IMHO the initial lack of non-corrupt democratic "civic culture", which led to the creation of a vicious cycle of sorts, the entrenched system in which non-corrupt officials can become outcasts easier than the corrupt ones and in which corruption is accepted as a brute fact of life without much resistance since democratic resistance is more or less useless. I haven't checked it in detail, but think Saakashvili dealt efficiently (more or less) with the corruption in the traffic police by basically firing most of the old force and raising the pay of the new cops. Which seems to be the only way it's to be done.

I think culture plays a huge role as well. What folks in the US consider corruption is just the cost of doing business elsewhere. Taking bribes for basic services is not considered corrupt behavior in many countries (sometimes even in the US!).
I lived in Naples, Italy as a kid and we had to provide a carton of Marlboros to the garbage man once a month to make sure he didn't forget us on his route.

I understand that "corruption" is often subject to subjective definition. And you could argue that culture is what informs these definitions. But then again: What made these cultures and how can they be effectively changed?
Italy is a good example for why the media as a fourth estate really does play an important role in the republican idea of a seperation of powers. Also, the insane inflation rates when they still had the lira…

Maybe a free market won't "solve everything," but starting a country off as a free market meritocracy under the rule of law does seem to work a little better in the long run than Communism. No system is perfect but some are a bit better than others.

The key phrase here is "rule of law". It was not something available in Communism (or: "Soviet Democracy"). For rule of law, seperations of powers is key. Only if the powers are checked and balanced enough is there enough of a guarantuee that the law will be available to every citizen equally. In Russia, it seems, for instance, that one of the major flaws is a judiciary that is not independent.
You also have to keep in mind that law predates "free" markets. Markets without laws are black markets.
Finally, I agree that some systems are a bit better than others. Certainly, phenomena like "De-Kulakization" and The Great Terror of the NKVD are not something to be feared in today's Russia.

I think one of the primordial flaws is confusing power with freedom. There is something very telling about how "Luxemburgism" was treated by the Bolsheviks.

"Corruption" is a human condition. Why is it more prevelent in some systems rather than others?
In the system (Soviet Russia) the corruption is a lot easier when the power is limited to a select few
Does that mean there is not corruption in a free market (read the USA) system? Of course not, but seeing that even a "man on the street" can hold a semblence of power (self reliance,, free speech,,an actual vote that counts,, etc) that openess leads to less corruption and less magnitude of corruption.
Also, rule of law. Lets say an old Soviet politburo member is corrupt. Unless his corruption negatively affects a politburo member higher than him in rank and that member seeks retribution, no blood no foul
Here, a person in his basement typing on a blog can take down a politician/ businessman/ company by exposing it

re: #39 sattv4u2

You might want to read up on the "Mass operations" of the NKVD in the late 1930s. A lot of the unjust violence in the Soviet Union depended on active, murderous mass participation.

Of course not, but seeing that even a "man on the street" can hold a semblence of power (self reliance,, free speech,,an actual vote that counts,, etc) that openess leads to less corruption and less magnitude of corruption.
I would count those "powers" as constitutional freedoms that have more to do with civil liberties than with (only) "free market".
Also, rule of law. Lets say an old Soviet politburo member is corrupt. Unless his corruption negatively affects a politburo member higher than him in rank and that member seeks retribution, no blood no foul
Exactly. By the way, this is why I find the common-law concept of sovereign immunity creepy.

Yes, but that was done (the mass participation) as a form of self preservation ("if I'm not part of the mob, the mob will come after me")
It was the same mindset as the oft quoted

Already getting puddles like at intersections where piled snow blocks drainage. They freeze overnight and form a slipping hazard in addition to being a bottleneck when you cross the street.

My grandfather wasn't Cajun, but he grew up in south Louisiana and loved the food.
At every meal, there would be an array of condiments around his plate.
After we said the blessing, he would start with bottle #1, Tabasco, and start pouring. He put Tabasco on everything, I think. Then the salt, then the pepper, etc, etc, until his food was properly condimented up. Then he would eat.

(I'm beginning to think they're wired to put hot sauce/chile peppers on something; if it runs, chase it down and eat it, if it doesn't run, consider eating it anyways.)
Corrolary: If it doesn't run, put a *hotter* hot sauce on it.
I say that because my partner is planning on making a hotter hot sauce than his current one, and marketing it under the name "Hillbilly Hemmeroid Remover".

And for our Colorado Lizards, or anyone planning to travel through the mountain state in the next 24 hours...
Synopsis – Finally looks like we have snow!! This season’s first significant snow event will move through the Front Range and Denver Metro this morning and last through Friday morning with 6 to 10 inches expected in the Denver Metro and up to a foot along the Front Range Foothills and Palmer Divide. Frigid temperatures of below zero will plunge the wind chill values of below -20 to -30 in some areas tonight and Friday night.
The main impact will be hazardous travel conditions with near blizzard conditions at times. Expect delays and possibly closures along I-70 and Hwy 285 due weather conditions and accidents. While this morning’s commute will be rather benign – this evening’s commute will be a headache. Fortunately, since this is the holiday week, less cars on the freeways.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area, which is still largely digging itself out from under the blizzard of mistakes by Mayor Bloomberg, his top staffers, and MTA officials, who made a bad situation far worse by refusing to announce a snow emergency or take necessary precautions to keep the mass transit system from failing completely.
I had to travel into Brooklyn on personal business yesterday and I was absolutely appalled with the state of the roads there. I had lived in Brooklyn for 20 years, and am regularly in Brooklyn to see friends and family, and have never seen snow emergency routes clogged with so much snow and abandoned vehicles as I saw.
Ocean Parkway was the epitome of what went wrong. It's a snow emergency route (that if a snow emergency is declared, only vehicles with tire chains or snow tires are permitted to drive - allowing sanitation crews the ability to plow and to speed emergency response to those that might need it).
Instead of being clear - vast stretches had hundreds of abandoned cars blocking lanes, tying up traffic and delaying emergency responses. People would see that the cross streets (some of them are themselves snow emergency routes) were in horrific shape, and caused further traffic issues. This is completely unacceptable and represented a health and safety emergency because emergency crews continue to be delayed in response times to help those who call 911 with emergencies.
The singular decision to not call a snow emergency at the outset of the storm - when the NWS was already calling a blizzard warning was a huge mistake - and heads should roll - particularly the Transportation Commissioner who thought the situation didn't call for one.
Add on to that the reports that the Sanitation workers were engaging in a work action by not adequately plowing their areas of responsibility because of budget cuts and workforce cuts, and it was a perfect storm of disastrous government responses for what is ordinarily a solid city response to storms.

re: #120 Decatur Deb
They haven't.
The total number of cuts amount to 5% reduction in the workforce. The issue was no one called the snow emergency, so no one bothered to get all hands on deck before the teeth of the storm hit. The MTA didn't declare their highest contingency plan until it was too late to recall workers to clear essential equipment and move equipment to where it would be sheltered/protected.
Sanitation claimed that they had 1600 plows and 350 spreaders working, which is the same number they use for previous storms, so they had the people and equipment necessary (and Sanitation unions are now making excuses that the crews weren't the usual experienced bunch b/c of holiday staffing, but that goes back to the refusal not to declare a snow emergency beforehand to get crews in place for the storm). But much of it was idle yesterday in Manhattan. Dozens upon dozens of plows were idle at West Side storage yards when they could have been convoyed to Brooklyn, Queens or Staten Island to provide additional relief and assistance in clearing roads.
I think that's going to be something that the Sanitation Dept has to address.

That's less than the population of Manhattan. Or Brooklyn, Or Queens, or the Bronx by themselves.
NYC has 8 million, and this storm was unprecedented in its failure by the Administration to take necessary precautions before the storm began to be in a position to deal with the snows.

This is completely off topic, but I need some help. I just installed a new HP 20 inch widescreen monitor, 1600 x 900 resolution, and now all the fonts on all the screens look wonky. They look more like something that was printed on a dot matrix printer or when you run things in "safe" mode. Nothing looks crisp. Any suggestions?
Right click on desktop, find resolution settings. Put them on the max. Apply.
Sounds like your resolution is too low for your screen.
Try DPI settings.

Ah, but the population of NM is what exactly. Just over 2 million.
That's less than the population of Manhattan. Or Brooklyn, Or Queens, or the Bronx by themselves.
NYC has 8 million, and this storm was unprecedented in its failure by the Administration to take necessary precautions before the storm began to be in a position to deal with the snows.
true enough...NYC should have gone about their business, hunkered down and got the job done...seemed like a no brainer up there considering the possibility of deadly weather because of the population density

That's why we'll always have something to discuss. (I didn't join the Fed union because it lacked the ability to strike and was thus a sewing circle. I did voluntarily pay dues because I wasn't born to be a free-rider.)

Go into Start>Control Panel>Display>Advanced and it should tell you what kind of graphics adapter card you have. Depending on what software was installed for the graphics driver, it may have its own icon in the Control Panel. From there you can adjust the settings. Your system may still be applying the driver from the old monitor.

They haven't.
The total number of cuts amount to 5% reduction in the workforce. The issue was no one called the snow emergency, so no one bothered to get all hands on deck before the teeth of the storm hit. The MTA didn't declare their highest contingency plan until it was too late to recall workers to clear essential equipment and move equipment to where it would be sheltered/protected.
. . . But much of it was idle yesterday in Manhattan. Dozens upon dozens of plows were idle at West Side storage yards when they could have been convoyed to Brooklyn, Queens or Staten Island to provide additional relief and assistance in clearing roads.
I'm thinking of flooded school buses in NOLA . . .
I think that's going to be something that the Sanitation Dept has to address.

Bloomberg needs to step on that right now. Let the workers know that if they are seen as deliberately failing at their duties they'll be fired, on the spot if possible. re: #171 reine.de.tout
There's no way for the City to claim that they were taken by surprise by the storm:
The storm, if it exposed shortcomings in the city’s emergency response system, did not take it by surprise.
The National Weather Service began issuing its first hazardous-weather outlooks for the city on Tuesday, Dec. 21. The alarm was modest, the sense of certainty elusive.
But by Friday, the Weather Service was forecasting a 30 to 40 percent chance of six inches or more of snow, most likely north and east of the city, accompanied by wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour, from Sunday afternoon into Monday.
“However,” it cautioned, “a storm track only about 100 miles west of the expected track could bring a significant wind-driven snowfall to the entire region.”
Over the next 24 hours, that likelihood grew, and an hour or so before dawn on Christmas, the Weather Service upgraded the notification to a winter storm watch, which called for six to eight inches of snow and strong, gusty winds for the city and the surrounding region.
City officials maintain that they were closely monitoring the updates. But the deputy mayor in charge of overseeing the snow response, Stephen Goldsmith, had left New York for the Washington area. A spokesman for Mr. Bloomberg insisted that Mr. Goldsmith was in regular communication with agency chiefs: Mr. Doherty, the sanitation commissioner; Janette Sadik-Khan, the transportation commissioner; and Joseph F. Bruno, the head of the Office of Emergency Management.
Those officials soon had more information about the storm, and a major decision to make.
At 3:55 p.m. on Saturday, the Weather Service issued a blizzard warning, forecasting 11 to 16 inches of snow, with higher amounts in some areas. It warned that strong winds would cause “considerable blowing and drifting of snow” that could take down power lines and tree limbs.
Once I saw that they were predicting a blizzard by Christmas afternoon, Bloomberg should have called the snow emergency.
The NWS doesn't go and make the blizzard call often or lightly - especially in the NE. When they did, everyone should have taken precautions - from the Mayor on down. It's like everyone ignored the NWS call on the 25th at 4PM - which would have given all the relevant departments and agencies time to recall the necessary personnel and move equipment into position. The snow emergency would have reduced vehicle traffic on the main routes - and had they been clear of vehicles, the plows would have been able to run through the snow emergency routes without trouble and been able to access and clear the secondary and tertiary routes in a timely manner.

More blackmail threats from Assange....
Assange: Many Arab Officials Work With CIA
"Top officials in several Arab countries have close links with the CIA, and many officials keep visiting US embassies in their respective countries voluntarily to establish links with this key US intelligence agency. These officials are spies for the U.S. in their countries."
.....
Assange hinted in the interview that he is letting the link between the CIA and Arab officials be known without naming any specific names in case his upcoming trial in Britain does not go his way, or, worse, should he be assassinated."If I am forced we could go to the extreme and expose each and every file that we have access to," Assange said, adding that there were 2,000 websites that were ready to publish the remaining files that are in possession of WikiLeaks after "he has been done away with."
What a dick. He's going to get a lot of people killed.

Here's another one from Ynet:
Assange: I'll reveal info that will spark Arab world coups
WikiLeaks founder tells Al Jazeera leaked documents in his possession show top Arab officials disclose sensitive information to CIA
"These officials are spies for the US in their countries," Assange said in the second part of his interview with Arab television network Al Jazeera. He said the leaked documents in his possession show that Arab officials reveal sensitive information on their colleagues and respective countries.
Julian Assange, founder of the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks, said he holds the names of senior officials in the Arab world who visit US embassies in their respective countries voluntarily "to establish links" with the CIA.
The WikiLeaks founder said the website would consider exposing the names of the Arab officials only if it would be certain it would not lead to their death.
Assange warned that the revelations may lead to dangerous coups in the Arab world. He added that WikiLeaks plans to reveal some 7,000 documents related to Egypt and its president, Hosni Mubarak.
Other leaked documents, he said, reveal information on the oil industry in the Arab world over the past few decades.

Barone Sanitation to the Rescue
[ Via: NY Post ]While the Sanitation Department took its time clearing up snowy streets around town, at least Tony Soprano was out to rescue those stranded by the great blizzard of 2010.
“Sopranos” star James Gandolfini came to the rescue of a stricken motorist who got stuck on unplowed Bedford Street in the West Village on Monday night. The beefy actor, who lives in the neighborhood, helped dig and then push out the stranger’s car–and then popped into nearby bar and restaurant Daddy-O to change a $100 bill to tip others who pitched in to help out.
Daddy-O owner Phil Casaceli told us, “Bedford Street didn’t get plowed until late Monday night, and the whole street was a 3-foot drift of snow. Somebody driving down the street got stuck in their car around 8 p.m. — and the next minute, James Gandolfini appeared from another car behind and offered to help out.
Mr. Gandolfini made the motorist an offer he couldn’t refuse. — GP

Assange is highly visible. That's a personal choice on his part. There's nothing about the nasty shit he's doing that actually depends on him being highly visible. He just loves flaunting himself around.
We can't count on the next guy also strutting around like a peacock. Kill Assange, and you make it a lot more likely the next ringleader of a Wikileaks-like organization will be very hard to find.
And yeah, since they've already distributed the encrypted files that they have, there's little way to mitigate any damage by killing him. So I really don't see any point to it, and there's a lot of harm.

I don't think you should jump to the conclusion that those athiests oppose America on the grounds of it being 'Christian'.
I'm sure its just one of the faults they find. i was just trying to get a quick pity answer in. Sometimes the format of comment threads gets in the way of substance.

re: #311 Dark_Falcon
I don't think you can even assume they consider America 'Christian'. I'm an atheist, and I find Assange ludicrously stupid. That i don't happen to make youtube videos seems largely incidental.

I KNOW I'm correct
It was years ago, and I wish I could recall the UN resolution number, but I distinctly remember the debate over it BECAUSE the words "by any (or it may have been all) means" necessary was in it
The debate was over what that meant
It's in UN resolution 678
to use all necessary means

I need to get going, but I want to leave you folks with this article. Yes, its by Jonah Goldberg, but I think you'll like it at least a bit. Please do comment, and if people think it worthy I'll put it in a page when I get home tonight:
So now openly gay soldiers get to fight and die in neocon-imperialist wars too?
David Brooks saw such ironic progressive victories coming. In his book Bobos in Paradise, he wrote that everything “transgressive” gets “digested by the mainstream bourgeois order, and all the cultural weapons that once were used to undermine middle-class morality . . . are drained of their subversive content.”
Two decades ago, the gay Left wanted to smash the bourgeois prisons of monogamy, capitalistic enterprise, and patriotic values and bask in the warm sun of bohemian “free love” and avant-garde values. In this, they were simply picking up the torch from the straight Left of the 1960s and 1970s, who had sought to throw off the sexual hang-ups of their parents’ generation along with their gray flannel suits.
As a sexual-lifestyle experiment, they failed pretty miserably, the greatest proof being that the affluent and educated children (and grandchildren) of the baby boomers have re-embraced the bourgeois notion of marriage as an essential part of a successful life. Sadly, it’s the lower-middle class that increasingly sees marriage as an out-of-reach luxury. The irony is that such bourgeois values — monogamy, hard work, etc. — are the best guarantors of success and happiness.

But that isn't about removing Saddam from power, at all. It's about defending Kuwait and making Iraq withdraw.
Surely you don't think that'd be a blanket acceptance of committing war crimes, do you?

re: #302 Killgore Trout
I'm not sure it would be helpful for us to kill him anyways. His stash of documents will be leaked if he's alive or dead so it doesn't make much difference.
The important question is timing. The value of certain information decreases with age.

No
It was about reaffirming past resolutions, and that is what the debate was about
TO make the past resolutions (660-661-662-664 et al) stronger it allowed member states to use all necessary means. The debate was what that included. ALL MEANS included removing him from power

And what "war crime" is committed by removing a hostile regime? Did the allies commit a war crime by removing the Nazi regime, Hitler specifically?

No, the 'all necessary means' is specifically only in reference to resolution 660, which is about Iraq withdrawing from Kuwait.
2. Authorizes Member States co-operating with the Government of Kuwait, unless Iraq on or before 15 January 1991 fully implements, as set forth in paragraph 1 above, the foregoing resolutions, to use all necessary means to uphold and implement resolution 660 (1990) and all subsequent relevant resolutions and to restore international peace and security in the area;

I am pointing out that if you define 'all necessary means' as broadly as you seem to want, it would be an endorsement of war crimes as part of those means.

So ,, NO!

And please define what is meant by ALL means necessary

Well, the various other UN treaties and agreements on the conduct of war, for one thing.

What do you mean by 'the removal of Saddam'?

You haven't answered if ALL MEANS NECESSARY excluded anything
(besides some vague "various other UN treaties and agreements ")
So again, was there anything that was excluded from the "ALL MEANS" part of 668, something I missed about the retention of the regime as long as they complied with past resolutions? Maybe I missed that

re: #341 sattv4u2

Yes, I have. It excludes everything prohibited by other treaties. It's not 'vague' to talk about those other treaties. The Geneva Convention would be one good example.

You seem to have that problem with many posters (or it's sister phraseologies you use like , what do you mean or what are you saying) Why is that? Why is it when you're asked a question you have difficulty giving a declarative statement (sans a question) as an answer, yet you practically demand that others answer you in a straightforward manner?
Is it the word REMOVE you're having trouble with? I see you're still not comfortable with the word ALL, so I can understand your reluctnace

I never called for assisination, even though you tried to tie me too it (in that I never entertained the notion of it, but by you introducing I'm glad you agree that it doesn't authorize assasination. implied that I had)
I did state that there was a USA House Resolution 557 that called for
approving removal of Saddam & valiant service of US troops.
States that the House of Representatives:
1. affirms that the United States and the world have been made safer with the removal of Saddam Hussein and his regime from power in Iraq;
So perhaps your issue is with the US House of Reps and not with me!

Can you explain why you want to know everything that it includes, and why you think it'd be feasible for me to type it out?
