The insanity that followed over the Elena Kagan playing softball photo.

That was the event that actually 'cut the cord' for me. A minor event but the frenzy (as short as it was) was indicative of just how deep the dysfunction has become.

The woman was a then nominee for the Supreme Court of the United States of America.

That, rather than her record or stated positions was the what upset the wingnuts most of all.

Unbelievable.

Damn, there are just so many it all becomes a blur. I'm trying to think of the most important ones now. The one's that are really shaping Republican policy from top to bottom.
Here's my short list off the top of my head.
Death Panels
- Obamacare takeover of 1/6th of the economy
- Acorn
- New Black Panthers
- Secretive Bankers of the Federal Reserve
- New World Order

Of that list I think the least sensational but most important is the New World Order. It's an old nontroversey but has become the core of Republican ideology and encompass everything from Global Warming, Federal Reserve, TSA, gay rights, George Soros, etc.

Here's the local weather geek on our local PHP forum...

wxgeek

After our first significant snow of the season, bitter cold in place over most of CO today and New Years Day. Temps will struggle to get into single digits today, with lows again well below zero tonight, in the -5 to -15 range again. New Years Day will see temps mostly in the single digits and teens. We may see some breezy westerly winds Saturday night and Sunday morning, with warmer temps on Sunday. We should see mostly sunny skies and seasonal temps for the coming week. Only some mountain snow flurries early part of the week. Next chance for snow for the foothills looks to be next weekend, but that is quite iffy at this time.

As our system moves off to the northeast, it will create blizzard conditions across the Dakotas and Minnesota tonight and New Years Day. It is also bringing severe weather across Arkansas and Missouri with several tornadoes reported last night and today. This system will continue to bring severe weather across parts of the deep South and into the Ohio Valley New Years Day, so some travel concerns in these regions.

Overall, snow totals from this system at the lower end of the forecast, with generally 5-10 inches along higher foothills locations, and 3-6 inches in the Urban Corridor. Still some much needed moisture. We will end the year with 19 inches of snow on Conifer Mtn, which is about 35% of normal snowfall for this time of year (54 inches is our average), so we are still very dry and in need of additional moisture.

Oh I know about that. That's there problem if you ask me. I think the ability to hear a car coming down the street is cultural thing too. The ability to hear music, birds, water, the fire alarm, etc.

I've heard about that. Blind people have the biggest problems since they won't hear or see a Prius driving down the road. Especially a low speeds since you won't get tire noise.

They get pretty intense too. People can choose to have cochlear implants, use sign language, or whatever else they want. As for children it would be up to the parent. I know if I had a deaf child and could afford a cochlear implant for the kid I'd do it. However, the "Deaf Culture" activists are beyond reason.

Doesn't the nontroversy of 2010 have to be the most obvious one?

Based on total media pixels and politician freakout: the "Ground Zero Mosque" which the fine print showed was not so much "ground" or "zero" or "moque", but among many things had prominent American Conservatives arguing that feelings are more important than following Constitutional law on freedom of religion, created the malapropism refudiate (which I actually like) and got Justin Bieber falsely boycotted (linked above).

Egypt Church Explosion: Injuries Reported After Blast Outside New Year's Mass

An explosion went off in front of a Coptic Christian church as worshippers emerged from a New Year's Mass in the Egyptian city of Alexandria early Saturday, killing at least seven people, officials said.

After the blast, enraged Christians emerging from the church clashed with police and stormed a nearby mosque, prompting fights and volleys of stone throwing with Muslims, police and witnesses said – a sign of the sectarian anger that has been arising with greater frequency in Egypt.

Perhaps there is a recent rise in anti Assyrian Christian violence in Iraq corollary to the invasion but I think if you look further into the history of the region you'll find that the Assyrian Genocide clearly indicates a long stand animosity and hatred of the Assyrians by the dominant cultures in that region. We have to look beyond the microcosm of recent events and look at the greater macrocosm of history.

If you really wanted a left-wing OO, you could use one of the lefties who screamed about Obama "betraying" them for compromising on taxes, and juxtapose that with someone on the right scream about Republicans betraying them on DADT or START.

This one gets closer. Remember the TeaParty spitting incident?

Good point Gus. The violence of the region has as much to do with ethnicity as religion. And of course even ethnicity itself is a reflection of the power politics of empires. As old as human civilization I'm afraid.

Assyrians in Iraq face a stark choice: convert, die or leave
By AARON HOWARD
• Thu, Dec 16, 2010

November was a fairly quiet month in Iraq. An estimated 298 civilians were killed in bomb explosions or shootings. The November lull followed one particularly bloody day on Oct. 31, when gunmen wearing suicide vests jumped the security wall at the Chaldean Catholic Church of Our Lady of Salvation in Baghdad. Claiming they were members of al-Qaida’s Iraqi affiliate, the Islamic State of Iraq, the gunmen held more than 100 congregants hostage.

Iraq Security Forces attempted a rescue that evening. Blood and pieces of human flesh sprayed onto the church altar when gunmen began to shoot and blow up the hostages. They murdered 58 worshipers, including two priests.

After the massacre, the ISI issued a statement that defined churches as “The dirty place belonging to the infidels that Iraqi Christians have long used as a base to fight Islam.” The group promised more attacks, declaring all Christians as “legitimate targets.”

The church attack was the first time that most Western media had covered any news of the Assyro-Chaldean community in Iraq. In larger context, the Assyrians are targets of persecution from Kurds, Shiites and Sunnis. Lacking the power or influence to defend themselves, they are in danger of disappearing as a community in Iraq.

“I will clearly say this: What is happening in Iraq is, at the minimum, ethnic cleansing. Other people will say it is genocide, even if the numbers are not there, because the Assyrians are being killed in a deliberate and strategic way,” said Dr. Elmer Abbo, assistant professor of medicine, University of Chicago Medical Center, and executive director of the Assyrian American National Coalition.

222 Gus  Fri, Dec 31, 2010 7:04:20pm

re: #220 Gus 802

He also mentions what we both touched upon:

The current persecution represents a rapid acceleration in a long history of oppression that dates back, to the Assyrian Genocide of 1917-’18.
As the Ottoman Empire began falling apart, the Young Turks (the late Ottoman Empire leadership) instigated a series of violent mass-murder campaigns against Christian minority communities that included Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians.

“Three-quarters of the Assyrian population was killed at that time,” said Dr. Abbo. “That clearly was a genocide. Since then, there have been episodes of persecution and systematic marginalization of Assyrians in Iraq. But, at least we were left alone for the most part until the current war. That put us in the crossfire.”

The Assyrians were left alone largely because Saddam Hussein, dictator of Iraq from 1979 to 2003, was a nationalist. In a land artificially created out of the ruins of the Ottoman Empire, composed of multiple ethnicities and religious sects, Saddam saw Arab nationalism as the key to uniting Iraqis. Nationalism – and Saddam’s use of political terror – worked to unite Iraq until the U.S. invasion of 2003.

In post-Saddam Iraq, both Arab and non-Arab communities (especially Kurds) made bids for power. Vulnerable non-Arab minorities, like the Assyrians, have become targets of discrimination in many aspects of social and political life in Iraq and the Kurdish Autonomous Region. More worrisome, the Assyrian community has turned into soft targets for al-Qaida and other fundamentalist Islamist organizations.

It is true that we haven't seen truly global scales of genocide until the advent of hyper nationalism. The heirs of the French revolution have seen the death of many millions. Marx, Lenin, Mao, Pol Pot, etc. all saw religion as the enemy of humanity, yet millions perished because of their "visions". Religion has killed its thousands. Modernism has killed its millions. Basically, humans are both brilliant and stupid, and as we advance, death and progress lie in our wake.

Exactly! I was searching for the name just a minute ago. I'm sure Barrett isn't the type to look for an intellectual equal. Although he is as we used to call a pseudo-intellectual. He's extremely immature that for sure.

Yeah, as I listened, I was thinking if the roomie was that upset about it, this is a regular thing, it had nothing to do with Barrett, just his girlfriend's habits.

Well, my mom had some jewelery stolen from her by a relative of a room mate. Nothing really expensive, but irreplaceable in it's sentimental value. A family heirloom passed to her from my great grandmother, who had obtained it from her mother.

Worthless to pawn, but worth more than money to my mom.

From the National Inquirer...Bill tells Hillary she's too fat.

Super-busy HILLARY CLINTON has packed on 40 extra pounds - and she blew up at former tubby hubby when BILL suggested that she check into a fat farm!

In the past four months, the secretary of state has ballooned to a hefty 171 pounds while criss-crossing the globe on diplomatic missions and dealing with the WikiLeaks scandal, sources say.

The 63-year-old politician has been binge eating instead of exercising, and ex-president Bill made the mistake of telling his 5-foot-7 wife that she was looking chunky, insiders say.

"With her nonstop workload, Hillary has ditched her regular gym schedule. She's been eating rich, fatty foods while dining with heads of state around the globe - and it's no wonder she's gained 40 pounds in the last four months. Now she's hit an all-time personal high of 171 pounds," a Clinton friend told The ENQUIRER.

"Poor Hillary feels terrible about the way she looks, but she is so busy she isn't making time for her own needs."

Making things even worse is her husband of 35 years - who's battled his own weight woes until becoming thinner recently. Bill pointed out that she needed to do something, sources say
.
"When Hillary asked him how she looked, he told her, 'You're huge! You need to go to a fat farm!'

"Then he made things worse by saying treadmills and stair climbers were fun," a pal told The ENQUIRER.

"Hillary exploded!"

Dude, don't you know you never tell your wife she's fat?

Word. Just another object lesson on why you don't bring people you don't know into your home.

I learned that lesson at a young age, running with the kind of people I ran with, doing the kinds of things they did. You just don't let random people know what you do or what you have.

And it ain't even about that one random person. They could be decent, but have a big enough mouth to say something about your situation in front of the wrong people.

Way back, a buddy of mine had his product stolen twice in a row, and ended up indebted to some pretty serious characters. It all worked out eventually, but I was fearing for his life there for a little while.

Loose lips do sink ships.

True. Yet even if the "right" person drops a word around the "wrong" kind of people, you could have problems. Not everyone gets that.

For instance, people love to steal guns. If I owned a firearm of any kind for home defense or whatever, not even my closest friend would know it.

It's not that I don't trust my friends. I am absurdly scrutinizing in that department. It's just, I don't always know how many details they might let slip when they've had a few drinks or whatever.

I was trying to think of an equivalent left wing nontroversy to some of these, but I'm drawing a blank.

I recommend the media/left's ongoing hatred of and obsession with Sarah Palin. Here we have a beautiful, happy, successful woman in the private sector whose daily actions and decisions have absolutely no affect on any of us. She's guilty of being a likable, conservative Republican who is loved by millions on the right. For this, she must be demonized by a huge percentage of prominent, left-leaning media outlets.

I think you're a little unclear on the concept. "Nontroversy" means the underlying premise is bogus, but in the case of Sarah Palin she really is a dim-witted fanatic who lies to the public on a regular basis in order to stoke right wing fears of just about everything.

For an outrage from 2010, how about Sharron Angle's response to a reporter: "I'll talk to the press after I'm elected." In 2010, Palin, Angle, O'Donnell, and a few others expressed their contempt for the media with great clarity and openness.

That said--I haven't been around lately, probably to no one's displeasure, but it was good to sign on tonight. May the new year be a happy, healthy, peaceful, successful one for everyone here. Be secure in the knowledge that there are at least a few sane people left in the world, and that some of them hang out here. Hope and/or pray that the fanatics of the world, domestic or international, do not get their way this year or ever. Be kind to your families and friends, be gracious whenever possible, be patient and understanding with the dull of mind, and treat everyone with respect. Expect the same from others, and don't be afraid to "lower the boom" if they keep on behaving badly.

Be well.
