5 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Fri, Dec 31, 2010 8:55:20pm

My predictions for this coming year:

Pamela Geller's spelling and grammar will continue to slide.

Barrett Brown will produce at least three more entertaining videos.

The President and Congress will not get along, particularly.

War will go on, in multiple places. In Africa, horrible things will happen to people. Nobody will have any idea how to stop this.

People will starve. Other people will try to stop this.

Someone will publish a PhD on the lolcat phenomenon.

An interesting fossil will be unearthed.

A starlet will go to rehab. It won't work.

I will eat my body weight in chocolate.

Happy New Year Charles. One thing we noted around my home is how far the blog has come in the last year. Pages and constant upgrades. How it appeals across the most reasonable spectrum of politics and opinions. How it draws the ire of the extremists and theocrats. Well done. Very well done.

The Perfect New Year's Resolution.

St. Francis, who's father always called him "Asissi"

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury,pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

Too bad we don't do the Fiskie anymore: A late but worthy entry....

End human rights imperialism now

Groups such as Human Rights Watch have lost their way by imposing western, 'universal' standards on developing countries

Founded by idealists who wanted to make the world a better place, it has in recent years become the vanguard of a new form of imperialism.

Want to depose the government of a poor country with resources? Want to bash Muslims? Want to build support for American military interventions around the world? Want to undermine governments that are raising their people up from poverty because they don't conform to the tastes of upper west side intellectuals? Use human rights as your excuse!

This has become the unspoken mantra of a movement that has lost its way.

Human Rights Watch is hardly the only offender. There are a host of others, ranging from Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders to the Carr Centre for Human Rights at Harvard and the pitifully misled "anti-genocide" movement. All promote an absolutist view of human rights permeated by modern western ideas that westerners mistakenly call "universal".

That one is indeed worthy of a Fiskie. We should do a 'Fiskie' for the left, and a 'Becker' for the right. But that piece is truly rancid. The human rights movement comes from the left, but now its being called "imperialistic". Truly a case of the left eating its own.

It would be tough to do both properly. As bad as that Guardian piece is it's an opinion. It's wrong and morally bankrupt but it's still an opinion. Fox is reporting a completely different reality based on lies and conspiracy theories. It's hard for me to get worked up about a lefty with a stupid opinion while the wingnuts are reporting on a fictional paranoid fantasy that exists only in their heads.

Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years Eve has gone ahead for the 107th consecutive year, if memory serves.
Earlier tonight, vandals briefly changed Clark's date of birth to "November 30 1889" in his Wikpedia bio. (screenshot)

Sadly, the show also included Jenny McCarthy this year. I don't really like having Bad Craziness with my New Years.

I wish stupid lefties were still worth picking on.

Coby Kyros Android Tablets Come Stocked with X Rated Content

Oh dear, oh no. It appears that in Marion, southern Illinois a couple of parents are pretty disturbed at the stock contents of the Coby Kyros tablets they gave their 12 and 15 year old daughters for Christmas. Actually only one of the devices, as opposed to both, had a few apps that were, well, less than appropriate for anyone opening the package for the first time – much less a young person such as this young lady in Illinois. One of the apps found right there on the home screen was called “Boobs! Butts! Babes!” and the other was called “Undress Me.”

“She touched it once to switch screens, and all of a sudden something that shouldn’t have been there came up,” Jay Hardin, the father of the family, said, “I actually thought she was kidding me. I walked in there and I looked at the screen of this thing and, sure enough, there were some things on there that should not have been on there for any kid.” – WSIL TV added that he said his daughters did not even have them long enough to connect to the internet.

Heh.

Walked in there? This seems suspicious. In one sentence he says they didn’t have enough time to connect to the internet, and in the other he says he “walked in there and looked at the screen.” We’re a teeny bit suspicious of this fellows knowledge of how fast kids understand technology and can connect to the internet with a device such as this.

Of course the Coby group responded instantly to the news. Coby Senior Product Manager Michael Paladino said in a written statement: “There is nothing pre-programmed from Coby. Like any other internet device with an open platform, a wide range of content is available which may require parental oversight. Coby is always looking for ways to improve our offerings.”

Object lesson? Parents: If you can't wrap your head around it, don't hand it to your kids and expect someone else to do your job for you. Get your head in the game, and make your children your responsibility.

They may have had time to connect, but not download 2 apps! It takes a minute. First you find it, then you download it. And why would the kid call dad to show him the app if they were tee-heeing behind his back? Nah, probably one someone returned and got put back on the shelf. Nobody would bother to check to see if someone had downloaded an app before returning it.

I would say, buying them such a device at that age is a little ridiculous anyway. But expecting parents to peer over their children's shoulder as the open the package is silly. You got a kid? Do you hover over them as they flip through the channels or turn on their computer...constantly? Come on. No sane person is that diligent. He was right in the next room and came in immediately. Sounds pretty responsible to me. It's not really that big an issue. Kids get peaks of adult stuff all the time. It was nipped in the bud. I'm sure he returned it right away. No big deal. But I don't think you should make it sound as if he's a negligent parent because they got a peak at a booby. I remember sneaking in to cut up my dad's Playboys for paper dolls. Kids get into things. Disagree. Today's kids are far too savvy for the "See 'N Say" type toys that you or I had in our youth. The need greater intellectual challenges.

But expecting parents to peer over their children's shoulder as the open the package is silly.

Certainly. The parents should educate themselves on the internet ready devices they intend to give their kids, and give those devices a good "once over" before giving them to their kids.

Much the same would have been done back in the day with "Assembly Required" bicycles and the like. No responsible parent would have sent their kid down the road on one of those without giving that a good "once over".

You got a kid?

Irrelevant to the topic.

Do you hover over them as they flip through the channels or turn on their computer...constantly? Come on. No sane person is that diligent.

Agreed.

He was right in the next room and came in immediately. Sounds pretty responsible to me.

Not at all. Perhaps I worded it poorly, but it seemed to me that he was trying to blame his lack of due diligence on the manufacturer.

I remember sneaking in to cut up my dad's Playboys for paper dolls.

And even then, I understood. I couldn't blame them for what they were doing. Sensationalism and blame American first has real consequences for America guy! Go figure. But of course, what he is really saying isn't "I'm at fault for this." I couldn't read it all the way through. Disgusting. No recognition at all that his style of reporting was at least partly to blame for the anger at all Westerners the refugees felt. Sensationalism and blame American first has real consequences for America guy! Go figure. But of course, what he is really saying isn't "I'm at fault for this." But rather, "Those terrible war mongers in power are at fault for this. See, I told you!" False modesty, hypocricy, and martyrdom. Blech. I see why you named the "award" for him.

Yes, we have our disagreements with Mr. Fisk. Nevertheless, if Fisk shows up in your community, please extend him every courtesy due a distinguished visitor, show our tolerance and enlightenment by listening patiently to his dissident but beautifully expressed views, praise him afterward for his sagacity and moral vision and ensure that he is the center of attention at the tasteful gathering of cognoscenti that will surely follow.
Then beat him up.

Balogne. They just were never allowed the free reign the loonies today have. If you make that kind of excuse for them, they will soon be the next wackos annoying you on satelite tv. Remember, the right wing said the exact same thing such a short time ago. Ignore it, excuse it, or say it's not as bad as someone else, and it gets bigger and ugglier. Wish the right had realized that before the complete takeover by the utterly insane. Hopefully, they can still pull back from it.

"Auld lang syne" is Scottish (English literally as "old long since") ... and the minimalist English translation, according to Wikipedia, is as follows:

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and days of old lang syne ?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !
and surely I’ll buy mine !
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since days of auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

Sounds very British Isles - the reference to seas and streams.

Pope is off his rocker.

"In his traditional Christmas address yesterday to cardinals and officials working in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI also claimed that child pornography was increasingly considered “normal” by society.

“In the 1970s, paedophilia was theorised as something fully in conformity with man and even with children,” the Pope said."

Calling George Costanza! and other top 10 oddball golf stories from 2010

Golf in 2010 had its share of moments -- from the memorable (Phil Mickelson’s shot from the pine straw on 13 at the Masters) to the bizarre (Dustin Johnson’s gaffe from the yup-it’s-a-bunker at the PGA Championship).

And then there were the truly weird stories involving golf courses, carts, clubs, balls, an oil spill, an assortment of body parts, and even some stiffs. Here, then, are 10 of the somewhat golf-related oddball stories from the year about to pass (viewer discretion is advised):

Wow... that article was right out of the Al-Jazeera playbook.

Not to toot my own horn (when did that ever stop me), I remember during the Democrat Convention in Denver, I was part of a 3 panel round robin on Al-Jazeera English. We were watching Bill Clintons convention speech, his subject was on the economy. After the speech, the reporter when around the table asking us opinions on the speech and the content.

The live, impromptu (my ass) spin that the reporter was putting on out answers was poetic propaganda in motion. And yes, he managed to slip something in there about Israel, even though the content of the speech was mainly about domestic affairs.

Side note : The reporter was a ex-marine information officer now working for Al-Jarzeera.

It's been par for the course. Days have been generally 30's, nights 20's (F), sometimes dipping into the teens. What's been different is east of the continental divide has only had minimal snow until this past Thursday/Friday. We are having one of those winter weather patterns where the jet stream is pushing storms up and over (north) of the east side of the state, around the continental divide. So, places like Vail is getting 2-3 feet snow events, 100 miles east of that, nothing.

The steady below zero over the last 24 hours is not rare at all, fortunately it doesn't happen consistently over any long period of time any given winter.

Of course I've noticed that Europe/Paris has had a more wintery winter, with temps dipping regularly into the 20's (f) at night.

That doesn't bother me. That's why when I visit France, I do it in the winter. I can stand a Paris winter better than any Paris summer. And all in all, less crowds and the prices are somewhat better.

I'll be there in a couple of weeks.

I'm not a big fan of drive-by-wire technology...I fear I'll end up going back to pre-airbag vehicles eventually because I like my gas pedal to be connected to a steel cable that winds its way up to the carburetor and connects to a little metal arm that, when pulled in one direction, allows more fuel to enter the engine.

re: #271 darthstar

I'm not a big fan of drive-by-wire technology...I fear I'll end up going back to pre-airbag vehicles eventually because I like my gas pedal to be connected to a steel cable that winds its way up to the carburetor and connects to a little metal arm that, when pulled in one direction, allows more fuel to enter the engine.

Like I said above, I don't know a lot about cars. But I know what works. I have a 12 year old Chevy Prism (which is a Toyota Corolla), with front wheel drive, 89,000 original miles, and it does fine in all weather. It can navigate uphill with 4 inches of new snow on the highway, passing the 4-wheel slide vehicles stuck on the side of the road or in the ditches.

I agree. Drive by wire is a misapplication of fuel air management tech.

See you all later.. tomorrow, or before I go in to work tonight. I have to work overnight tonight, start at midnight, it's a little early for bed, but, it's below zero here, this office of mine on the north side of the house is chilly, I'm going to curl up on the bed with the electric blanket, listen to some radio and read or piddle with a game on the Ipod... it's too chilly to sit in this room any longer.

My electric heater, usually sitting next to me in this room, is in the bathroom doing double duty today, helping make sure the whole plumbing system doesn't freeze. This is a big old house, not as lockdown tight and shut as the newer homes.

At least the outside can invade my environment enough to remind me that I live in the mountains.

Bomb hits Egypt church at New Year's Mass, 21 dead

A powerful bomb, possibly from a suicide attacker, exploded in front of a Coptic Christian church as a crowd of worshippers emerged from a New Years Mass early Saturday, killing at least 21 people and wounding nearly 80 in an attack that raised suspicions of an al-Qaida role.

The attack came in the wake of threats by al-Qaida militants in Iraq to attack Egypt's Christians. A direct al-Qaida hand in the bombing would be a dramatic development, as the government of President Hosni Mubarak has long denied that the terror network has a significant presence in the country.

Some on the right would rather focus on riling people up for the culture wars. While some like Victor Davis Hanson and Ralph Peters are far-seeing enough to know this to be folly (even they don't call it folly, they never join these skirmishes) that sort of culture war politics has grown greatly on the right because it is a favorite of 'conservative' media personalities. It provides them with a hook for their viewers to keep them angry and listening while also providing an issue that cannot be solved (because those who feel differently culture-wise are far too numerous to sweep away) thus allowing the issue to be used for a long time. It's great for show hosts, terrible for a party.

As opposed to America, in which our capitalist overlords are currently looking around for another holiday for us to spend money on. American capitalist overlords LOVE holidays, especially ones involving massive gift-giving.

Yup.

For those who don't know, the New Year in USSR was "created" as a secular equivalent to Christmas, thus all the attributes - the Christmas tree, the gifts, Ded Moroz=Santa Claus.

Christmas is still a pretty secondary, even tertiary holiday in Russia, especially as it post-dates the New Year celebrations (unlike Catholic Jesus, Russian Orthodox Jesus was born on Jan. 7).

Actually, the Russian textbooks sitting in my bookcase were produced under the CCCP, so I have a slight inkling. Most of my Russian is gone, but I still remember the feeling of reading them and seeing the propaganda in the writings. It was subtle, but pervasive.

We were told about the Russian New Years, and how it was the bigger holiday.

What, exactly did you do on New Year's Day (as opposed to New Year's Eve.) My point was that, in America, the real holiday is the day before, but everything is closed today. Today is the official holiday, but there's nothing to do today, not really.

That one is indeed worthy of a Fiskie. We should do a 'Fiskie' for the left, and a 'Becker' for the right. But that piece is truly rancid. The human rights movement comes from the left, but now its being called "imperialistic". Truly a case of the left eating its own.

It's what the left does. They can't stand the idea of being successful or right. They don't have confidence that the right will chew them up, so to be sure they experience the right level of angst, they chew themselves up.

I wonder if the other hybrids or pure electric cars will have that issue. Imagine sitting there stuck, push the accelerator and all you get is that UFO sound.

I bought a Ford Fusion hybrid this fall, and in snowy conditions so far, haven't had problems. If it starts to perform in snowy conditions like a typical Cincinnatian drives in any conditions beyond pure, cloudless sunlight (i.e., flailing about uselessly and getting in the way of those of use who know how to drive in the sh**), I still have my old, beat-to-heck '95 Escort, which looks like hell but which goes just about anywhere.

What will various Lizards being doing in 2011.

Not asking for resolutions, but personal predictions.

I think I'll be using my Kindle ALOT.

Reading actual books, some of which I haven't touched in years. I love the feel of books; reading them is both an intellectual and tactile pleasure.

Doing less theater. The crap/pleasure ratio has swung the wrong way lately, plus my CRS disease cripples my ability to learn lines.

Of course, if, like my last gig, I'm getting paid for it, that's another story.

Managing my windfall inheritance money, trying to avoid buying and selling too often. Taking advantage of the lower tax rate on dividends and long-term capital gains. Investing aggressively but prudently.

Spending some of that money on a condo, closer to the office.

Trying to stay out of the nearby casinos.

Taking less crap from people who don't really matter. Taking more from those who do without exploding.

Staying in touch more with my 80-year-old mother, whose childhood best friend just passed away in NYC. I'm glad they were able to see each other one last time last month when Mom was overnighting in New York on her way back from Egypt.

Going to more baseball games.
