‘Allahpundit’ Complains About ‘Blasphemous’ Doritos Ad

At right wing blog Hot Air, Allahpundit complains about a “blasphemous” advertisement for Doritos. (Yes, really.)

Even to an ex-Catholic like me, it feels cheap. Blasphemy in defense of principle, like free speech, is welcome; blasphemy in the service of humor can be fun. Blasphemy to sell bags of Cool Ranch chips? Eh.

Even to an ex-Catholic like yours truly, it’s insanely ironic to see someone who uses the name “Allahpundit” whining about “blasphemy.”

Here’s the ad; in my ex-Catholic opinion, it’s pretty funny:

Assclowns. And they pay millions to Madison Avenue maroons. If Pepsi airs this, demand Catholic sensitivity training. Demand apologies. Demand contributions to groups that advance Christianity.

But certainly do not drink Pepsi or eat those damn chips.

PHILADELPHIA, January 4, 2011 — Media Wave Video Productions (MWVP.com) expressed disappointment today at not being named one of the 10 finalists announced yesterday in the Doritos/Pepsi MAX Crash the Super Bowl Contest (CTSB). After a review of more than 5,600 creative submissions, their entry — a clever and well produced spot entitled “Feed Your Flock” — did not make the final cut.

It works because it’s part of our culture.

I think it’s a lot more blasphemous to say that God told you that he wants people to send you money, as a thousand charlatans do all over the US every day.

As I’ve said, I think the ad is a little tasteless. But it’s funny, and it’s going to be effective because it’s being pitched to a mostly-Christian audience.

What I have no patience with is people who want to make this a whine about how they want major companies to go broke making witty, obnoxious and non-commercially-viable ads making fun of Islam.

And I have no patience with the ‘Christians are soooo persecuted in the United States’ rubbish.

Also, AP is hammering on a constant refrain with some of his ilk—anything funny about Christianity is an act of cowardice, because you could have made fun of Islam instead, and gotten killed! Hence, no jokes about Christianity, from Christians or anyone else, for the duration.

Well it’s a clever ad and it draws on American culture to get its message across. As an ex-Catholic and nonbeliever myself, I find it rather funny to use the chip for the host and pepsi for the wine/water. From my perspective, both things still, technically, represent the vital symbolism for the Catholic ritual.

On a deeper note…one could argue that the commercial also drives the point home that perhaps the RCC should “lighten up” with its dogma but perhaps that’s too much as well.

What’s doubly ironic about it is the historic aversion of Protestants to the Catholic practice of sacraments/communion. Indeed, Protestants have reviled the RC church for their belief, at times.

Actor Michael Lyons (a devout Catholic), who conceived the idea for the commercial and portrays the pastor, offered the following: “The initial feedback was overwhelmingly positive, but unfortunately a small percentage of comments posted on the CTSB web site cried foul and it grew from there. Those people misconstrued the content and intent of the ad. The pastor did not consecrate the Doritos and Pepsi — therefore it is not the Eucharist.” But because that is not clear to some viewers, they assume communion is being served.

OMG. Lava soap? Irish Spring? The closest I’ve come to using Ivory soap is the body wash but I found a generic brand from Wal Mart that I order online for half the cost in the retail store. Another time there was this biker guy who obviously knew I was Muslim and (in a very kind tone of voice) informed me, “You know you don’t have to wear that now that you’re here in America, right?” I assured him that yes, thanks, I was aware of that.

Or how about the little old man that smiled brightly and asked, “So, which cult do you belong to?”

there’s actually not much fire just walking around Black Rock City, the fire is really all in center playa. Out on the rings, the dance camps and such, there’s not much fireslinging. A lot of people at BM have outfits and such more fragile than latex, honestly, all the light up stuff, fiberoptics, projectors, el-wire, etc

Firespinners at BM tend to be smarter than that :D

Gotcha. A friend trained me in fire staff & basic safety like fuel handling etc. I really like it for stress relief. Invented mock combat fire tools in Santa Barbara with the Fishbone crew. My favorite part is when they say the people who wrote the 14th amendment didn’t intend it to be used for automatic citizenship for the children of immigrants. Isn’t that “judicial activism” using their modern interpretations to understand an older law? And honestly, I don’t see what the problem is. Most children of immigrants in this country become very well integrated in to the society. Many in my grandparents’ generation including my mom’s parents themselves were the children of immigrants and my grandfather as well his older brothers and my grandmother’s brothers served in the miltiary during WWII and Korea.

Gotcha. A friend trained me in fire staff & basic safety like fuel handling etc. I really like it for stress relief. Invented mock combat fire tools in Santa Barbara with the Fishbone crew. Trained them up in mock combat with fire swords etc. What a great time we had. Unfortunately I had to decline their offer to join their merry crew at the big event.

Mexico really bothers me. A country full of intelligent people, abundant natural resources and it is enough of a cesspool that people have to come here to work to send money back to their families in Mexico.

As I’ve said, I think the ad is a little tasteless. But it’s funny, and it’s going to be effective because it’s being pitched to a mostly-Christian audience.

What I have no patience with is people who want to make this a whine about how they want major companies to go broke making witty, obnoxious and non-commercially-viable ads making fun of Islam.

And I have no patience with the ‘Christians are sooo persecuted in the United States’ rubbish.

A fun bar bet is to ask what religion has the largest global membership. Answer, of course, is Christianity. While different sources give different actual numbers, Christianity is the largest and Islam is second. Hinduism and Buddhism are third and fourth (though a BBC report on Buddhism gave a membership that approached that of Islam.) CIA Factbook makes a good reference for the bar bet, by the way.

Christians 33.32% (of which Roman Catholics 16.99%, Protestants 5.78%, Orthodox 3.53%, Anglicans 1.25%), Muslims 21.01%, Hindus 13.26%, Buddhists 5.84%, Sikhs 0.35%, Jews 0.23%, Baha’is 0.12%, other religions 11.78%, non-religious 11.77%, atheists 2.32% (2007 est.)

The thing is, Christianity has thrived almost from the beginning of being the persecuted underdog. This hasn’t been true since Constantine converted, but it hasn’t stopped the mind-set. That’s a problem in my opinion.

Open border seems counterproductive to security issues. I did a short study of Mexican/American history a while back.

Mexicans have been coming and going accross the border since the Mexican-American War. It wasn’t a problem until now. I think security fears drive it.

no doubt we have a unique relationship with Mexico, but their problems go back to before their revolution and independence, 1821…gentrification, peasantry, land/resource ownership, concentrated wealth and power, all leftovers from the Spanish…Mexico has always been corrupt…they have never had a period of true democracy, never once…and in desperation the poor have always looked to the US and we have exploited them…it’s a fucked up mess

Mexico really bothers me. A country full of intelligent people, abundant natural resources and it is enough of a cesspool that people have to come here to work to send money back to their families in Mexico.

I wish I had a magic wand sometimes . ..

I try to imagine sometimes, just how awful life would have to be to get me to uproot my family from everything that is comfortably familiar to me, to sneak into another country where I can find work as a laborer because that’s a better life.

there is a work of his in Chicago that is like 8 feet tall and 3-4ft wide with incredible detail…as you approach it across the room it starts to sort of move or break up and when you stand right in front of it, it’s all dots…billions of dots…I walked up and back looking at that thing for half an hour…dots

I prefer Monet. His waterlilies series is lovely and the skill required to paint those pictures immense. Happily, one of the paintings in that series in the Chicago Art Institute.

Cathedral by the Sea by Ildefonso something. Translated from the Spanish —wonderful, wonderful literature. Pretty accurate historical fiction as well.

The Connie Willis twosome I mentioned earlier is Sci-Fi as well as historical fiction —about living thru the Blitz. Sooo good. Amazing writing.

Never been much into science fiction, but I have almost all the Terry Pratchett Discworld books in paperback. “Small Gods” is my favorite, but I also like the ones with Rincewind an awful lot.

For thrillers, you could do a lot worse than Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series. :-)

One of the first movies I remember seeing. Not in the theater but later on an early type of optical disk. They were too big and expensive at that time to be successful, but even then they had better picture than VHS.

Eh, thank you for reminding me. I actually saw the Wizard of Oz for the first time on one of those and I remember having to flip it. I did the flipping a getting the machine going again myself. Even as a young child I was a tech geek.

It’s brutal, but often brutal tactics can bring good results. Provided you don’t get civilians killed in the doing, though.

I picked up a copy of Bank’s first novel _The Wasp Factory_ at some point. Wasn’t too long a book so it was a quick read. Not a horribly strong novel, but it has bits that just grab you.

Note that this isn’t SF, but set “modern day” on an island in England.

On a serious note. One of my friends in high school was an Afghan and had lived there during the Taliban’s rule. He was Shia and had some amazing stories. Just amazed me because here was this guy my age who first hand experienced one of the worst authoritarian regimes in history and lived to tell about it and here I was just a suburban kid who was upset about Bush being president. It certainly put things in perspective for me and I like to think I’ve grown more politically mature in he past seven years. Agree with PLL’s comp of the Taliban to Milosevic.

Oh I know. I was mocking right wingers who attribute every totalitarian regime in history to the left and liberals. I definitely agree with you that regimes like the Taliban defy the liberal and conservative labels. I would call them religious reactionaries though but that’s not really political.

Should also mention that I don’t like conservatism being equated with fascism. Not a philosophy I like but they’re not the same.

The definition of terms changes over time. Liberalism no longer means what it used to, and neither does conservatism. It’s depressing.

Honestly, regarding the Republican party, I don’t wish for their demise. I do however wish that party especially in my neck of the woods would stop using social conservatism as a vote getter. DeMint’s a jackass if you think you can’t be a fiscal conservative without being a social con first. I know many true fiscal conservatives who could care less if you’re gay, smoke pot, etc. DeMint is a jackass and I really wish the Democratic Party had put up a better challenge to him this past election. Guy was gonna win but at least make him shake in his boots a little rather than having the freedom to spread the crazy by kingmaking the Christine O’Donnells of the world.

Always seem to come in at the end (work gets in the way). I notice most of this kind of discussion ends up discussing variations on names, trying to outdo each other on cleverness. Why?

Because humor and play on words and mental images is in our nature. And now people get all bent out of shape about Cap. Owen Honors and his skits. SNL gets a pass. But not on USS Enterprise. I just see the ‘In the Navy’ by Police and I have to laugh and weep.

At one point I finally listened to Levin’s show. The dude regularly shoved so many childish epithets into single sentences that I thought my radio would explode. I just could not take him seriously.

It made me think about the kind of language I use when commenting on the positions of those with political opinions that differ from mine.

I concluded that if folks are going to summarily discount my words, it will be because of the dick jokes I make, and not because I use the term ‘Demonrats’.
