Shooting Suspect’s Family Blockades House

US News • Views: 25,809

azcentral.com reports that the family of Jared Lee Loughner has blockaded their house with 4-by-4 double-thick plywood.

FBI agents working on the Gabrielle Giffords shooting encountered trouble gaining entry to the suspect’s family home Monday morning.

Family members of Jared Loughner apparently had put on 4-by-4 double-thick plywood that blocked access to the front porch of their north Tucson home.

At about 12:25 p.m., agents began banging on the blockade, yelling, “This is the FBI. Let us in.”

Some agents were sent behind the house, and they were able to get inside after talking to family members.

I guess somebody has already been in their back yard and took photos, including one of an "occult shrine" (a flower pot with a toy skull, and some candles.)

Holy crap. Just when I thought this story was running out of crazy.

4 Kragar  Mon, Jan 10, 2011 12:54:35pm

Given the media frenzy and possibility of people going after them, I don't consider a barricade to be that crazy a response.

5 lawhawk  Mon, Jan 10, 2011 12:54:46pm

According to the report it appears that some number of reporters might have crossed the line and trespassed, which could explain why the family boarded things up, but the family blocking access to law enforcement is a spectacularly bad idea.

Before we jump to conclusions: This may be because they're under assault from the media.

I am very curious about the parents, as well. But imagine what the situation must be like for them.

Meanwhile, Rep. Gifford's condition has stabilized although she remains in critical condition. Eight others remain hospitalized.

Given the media frenzy over their son's actions, I can understand locking and barricading yourself into your home.

I just hope they are fully cooperating with law enforcement to get the whole story of what the hell happened on the record.

Makes me wonder what kind of crazy the media has been using up to this point. I think I'm with everyone that believes the barrier may be more a response to the media than the authorities.

Well, it looks like Glenn Beck has his priorities right:

"But please look into protection for your family. An attempt on you could bring the republic down."

-- Glenn Beck, giving advice to Sarah Palin in the aftermath of the Arizona shootings.

Maybe they can ask the anti-American muslim to give Sarah her Secret Service detail back...oh, wait, she's no longer an actual political figure who matters in this country...she doesn't need protection - except maybe from her own rabid followers.

Another clue emerges from all the bullshit floating around.

Jared Lee Loughner: what is known about Tucson, Arizona, shooting suspect

“His writings will be virtually impossible for most people to understand, what with his references to unexplained numbers, his fondness for weird syllogisms, his unexplained references and his apparent semi-literacy,” writes Mark Potok, a hate group analyst at the Southern Poverty Law Center, on his blog.

But Mr. Potok notes that government debasement of the currency is a tenet of antigovernment “Patriot” movement extremist groups, and that Patriot conspiracy theorist David Wynn Miller has long held that the government uses grammar to enslave Americans, and that if an individual adds colons and hyphens to their name in a certain way, they are no longer required to pay taxes.

Miller’s ideas may seem loony “but he has a real following on the right,” writes Potok.

Weird:

Could that Palin droid have been right about the surveyor's marks?/
City Survey Crew Opens Fire on Would-Be Robbers

A trio of robbers picked the wrong target in Liberty City on Monday.

A suspect was shot in the leg and two are on the loose after the would-be robbers tried to jack a group of surveyors packing heat.

According to Miami Police, the robbers had targeted a survey crew working in the area near Northwest 15th Ave. and 65th Street near a Habitat for Humanity housing project.

On first glance, attacking a group working on a volunteer organization's project might seem like a safe target, but looks can be deceiving. The crew was actually subcontracted by the City of Miami and are not affiliated with Habitat for Humanity, new CEO Mario Artecona said.

The suspects didn't realize that one of the members of the survey crew was armed and as the thieves tried to make off with some survey equipment, that's when the bullets started flying

The two sides exchange between 14 and 16 shots, witnesses said, and one suspect was shot in the leg.

The wounded suspect was found a short time later on 65th Street, and police were able to recover the equipment. The other two suspects got away and are at-large, police said.

But without fear, what will drive the ratings?

When it's sweeps and I see teasers for the late news when watching TV, I usually joke to my wife when they finish breathlessly telling about some new threat, "So watch our News at 11:00, OR YOU WILL DIE!" or some variation on that.

The one where the daily news -- local AND national -- keeps telling you about household items that can kill you, and strains of this and that which will kill you, and every other bit of paranoia and fear that they stoke.

The culture where brown people, gays, Muslims, liberals, Democrats, health care, George Soros, Snooki, and globalization are blamed for every social ill, and for, in the immortal words of South Park, takin' yer job.

Stoke enough fear and paranoia in people, and eventually, the more gullible and/or suggestible among them will start to legitimately feel threatened and disaffected, lashing out violently.

you made that up...America is no culture of fear, no matter how many cartoons they watch...there are small pockets where safety is a concern because of a minority of gangsters or whatever, but we are a free and open society, hardly frozen with fear

I see... you're basically talking about the popular media and the people who can't think for themselves.

I'm talking about the pathetic excuse for a responsible press that we have in this country, and the vultures that take advantage of that to reach the alienated and disaffected.

I'm talking about irresponsible political types who use violent and bigoted rhetoric to blame everyone and everything for their problems in order to win votes. They blow on a dog whistle than stand around in amazement when a dog comes running and attacks.

I'm also talking about the fact that the whole world has literally changed in the last 20 years, and even moreso in the last 10. It's no accident that the more reactionary types in this country and in the Tea Party are older. The entire world structure they knew is gone. Communications, business, and everything else are completely different now than they were even a decade ago, and some simply cannot handle the change. They're drawn to images and rhetoric that casts them as the real patriots, fighting the good fight against all the evils in the world.

It's an overall culture of fear and anger. Sure, we're a free society and don't live like the Burmese or North Koreans, but to pretend that we're immune to fear is ridiculous. Our culture is soaked in it.

People with schizophrenia are far more likely to harm themselves than be violent toward the public. Violence is not a symptom of schizophrenia. News and entertainment media tend to link mental illnesses including schizophrenia to criminal violence. Most people with schizophrenia, however, are not violent toward others but are withdrawn and prefer to be left alone. Drug or alcohol abuse raises the risk of violence in people with schizophrenia, particularly if the illness is untreated, but also in people who have no mental illness. When violence does occur, it is most frequently targeted at family members and friends, and more often takes place at home.

Only the boards were 1.5 x 3.5, and so my bench was okay, but not exactly like I wanted it.

You will find that Hollywood often screws things up by sticking a dick into them.

If it's schizophrenia, it's likely that he didn't start showing symptoms until he was of age. Not much the parents can do when the child is an adult.

Friend of mine once volunteered to help organize a bridal shower. She and the groom's sister, who she didn't know beforehand, were working on it together. Sister was having problems--not returning calls, very disconnected and weird when they did speak.

Friend finally called the groom, and asked, 'Dude, what's up?'

He said, "Oh, yeah, maybe I should have told you. She just got diagnosed with schizophrenia. We're so used to thinking she screws stuff up because she's just a flake, but they say now there's actually a reason for it."

After my friend got over her horror at how the family seemed to be handling this woman's illness, things went fine.

The shooter will almost certainly be found mentally ill. All the signs of full-blown mental illness are there. Now this doesn't necessarily mandate an acquittal. Whatever his state of mind, he was able to make plans and stick to them.

I'd guess it would come down to guilty but mentally ill, and a sentence that includes mandatory treatment. The trouble is, what if the treatment works for long enough to give some future govt a cover story for releasing him?

Barring remarkable advances in psychiatry, a full cure, in the sense that one recovers entirely from say cholera if one lives, is not in the cards.

It will be interesting to see in the coming days what this guys mental status was, and how his family dealt with him. In my line of work I constantly deal with families that have a family member that is unstable, the frustration you see is heart wrenching,

They call us (Fire Dept) and want us to forcibly remove them to the hospital so they can get them back on meds. We can't do that, the laws make it so even if you know someone needs help, they cant be forced to accept it, unless they are a danger to themselves.

Having a family member that is of age, and mentally unstable is a nightmare.

I'm confused I thought McCarthyism and Joseph McCarthy were a good thing to the Palin crowd. And it's very insulting of Bill Kristol to make this analogy. Sarah hasn't lost her job or livelihood due to the criticism of her by the left. Hell, she's richer than ever and loving her life as a political kingmaker for the nutcases on the right.

The essence of McCarthyism was govt-led witch hunts. There's none of that here. Kristol is just angry that the candidate he tried to groom and get elected clearly is losing her stature as a credible general election contender.
