It's called speaking from the heart, despite your detractors. Others should follow his example.

You know you are an asshole. I wish you would repeat some of the words of this speech to yourself as you go to sleep tonight. But no, you don't have a fucking unpartisian heart.

Fuck you for always being the downer.

So incredibly well done. Inspiring and uplifting, just what we need now. Thank you Obama for your words.

9 lostlakehiker  Wed, Jan 12, 2011 6:22:13pm

Truly an excellent speech. Not just the delivery, but the content. He must have worked very hard on it; speechwriters don't have it in them to craft that kind of honest, from-the-heart stuff.

He writes most of his own speeches, and those that speechwriters prepare are revised, revised, revised, until he agrees with every word. It's part of what makes him such a great statesman. It would suck to be an Obama speechwriter, because he'd work your ass off.

There are a lot of great moments in the speech. Here is a very salient one:

If this tragedy prompts reflection and debate, as it should, let’s make sure it’s worthy of those we have lost. Let’s make sure it’s not on the usual plane of politics and point scoring and pettiness that drifts away with the next news cycle.

It was important because it's what the country needed. The speech doesn't have anything to do with what you think of President Obama, if you agree with him in any sort of way, or if you wish he would just disappear. That has nothing to do with it. It doesn't even have anything to do with even if he believed a single word he said.

What is important is he said it... and hopefully everyone listening will pause one fucking minute, and I mean everybody, and absorb the meaning behind the words he spoke.

Words do have meaning... and that works both ways.

People are sick of gutter politics, and he gave the speech that the country needed and wanted. Obama did what a president should do in this case--stayed above the fray and represented the country well. I'm reminded of the moment when I listened to Reagan explain the Challenger disaster to school children and adults alike. I think he just bought himself a whole lot of good will from the American people with this speech, and who knows, maybe from his political foes.

I damn near lost it when he got to the "rain puddles in Heaven" line. My god.

I've got to quote President Bartlet:

"We did not expect nor did we invite a confrontation with evil. Yet the true measure of a people's strength is how they rise to master that moment when it does arrive...The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels tonight. They're our students and our teachers and our parents and our friends. The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels, but every time we think we have measured our capacity to meet a challenge, we look up and we're reminded that that capacity may well be limitless. This is a time for American heroes. We will do what is hard. We will achieve what is great. This is a time for American heroes and we reach for the stars."

No, I think you are incorrect to think that just about anyone would have given the same speech. Look--I don't agree with much of Obama's politics. But he could have injected partisan undertones and he went out of his way not to. I for instance would not have expected this speech from Bill Clinton. Color me skeptical when it comes to whether this speech by the President will make any difference in how his self-declared enemies act.

For example, the conversation going on between Dan Spencer and tcot:

Or that Farah has changed one bit - he's still pushing the birther meme for all it$ worth.

And so on.

Hey all! I am back after a bit.

Some questions answered if curious:

No, I am not dead.

Yes, I had a misunderstanding that escalated into some unfortunate posts with some folks here.

No, I am not angry about it.

No, I was not staying away because I was angry.

Unfortunately, all of that happened right before a Shabbos followed by an intense period of travel and work.

Anyway I am back. I missed a lot of you.

Heh! I played my chaos army this last weekend and it was a masacre. The Imperial Guard went down hard...

I had a bloodthirster chomp on the Lord castallen Creed and his bodyguard. Buh bye!

Working on Battle Fleet Gothic stuff right now, and some Skaven.

Ah, I see you have embraced the power of Chaos! My desire to build a CSM army was reignited by reading The First Heretic, but alas, my funds ran so low I actually had to pawn my IG army. I'll get them back and get started on my Chaos soon enough. (What legion I am going to do is another matter....)

Sorry to hear you had to pawn your IG Army :( I hope you don't owe too much on them!

They did the Badab War. Fleshed it out nicely, I must say. Gave alot of the involved chapters fairly nice backstories. Mantis Warriors are guerrilla warfare specialists, for instance.

They also renamed the Space Sharks the Carcharodons Astra, and gave them a special character to match the new name: Tyberos the Red Wake. He has dual lightning claw chainfists, and can direct his attacks.

I owe $300 bucks on the IG. Fortunately, a friend decided to help me out and offered to pawn them from me. He is a 40K fan himself, so if I can't pay him off he still got a great deal.

re: #84 Locker

Yo.. wing nuts... THAT is how to be Presidential. Take notes.

A little off-topic, but if the wingnuts find taking notes from Obama too much, they could do a lot worse than emulate GWB during the hand-over and afterwards. He did an interview on Oprah a while back, and was aked why he hadn't criticised Obama. His response was along these lines:

"I'm treating him the way I would like to have been treated. It's a hard enough job being president without other people taking punches at at you".

GWB has his flaws, but personal nastiness or vindictiveness are not among them. I don't know how history will judge his presidency, but I think it'll judge him well as a person.

Exactly, these people are hurting. Their Rep was shot, the constituents dead.

Whatever.

I mentioned on the other thread, it's a release, which can be a bit manic. Tucson is a small town really. They get about 250,000 this time of year with the snowbirds, but yes, it's a huge shock. I think the applause is a natural response with the president there.

And all of my other friends here.

It was probably very good for my blood pressure and general state of well being that I wasn't on any number of threads discussing recent events. Not that I would have lost it with anyone. Certainly not that such things aren't important to discuss. We all saw things like the shootings, were inevitable given the incitement of right wing whakos - or the inability of those scum to reflect on their role in inciting the whackjobs.

Then there are the dozen other ways that the nation is being left to a lowest common denominator fed by the basest instincts and ignorance. We all get that.

And yes, I do need to vent about this stuff like the rest of you. And I missed you guys and I will be back to my old irascible Republican abusing self. The difference is that I am interested in not just talking about everything that is messed up, but convincing people to act (in beneficial ways).

It falls on plain old average Americans, like us, to be the adults. It is awesome that we know about what is going on and talk about it, but we need some real action. I don't mean violence. I mean educated voices loudly and clearly saying enough.

I managed to have a while thinking of nothing but physics, work and family.

I published a rather important (in as much as people are reading it and liking it) paper.

I started plotting with some rabbinic friends to get the Jewish community involved in AGW action as well.

I know exactly what what the two ladies from Hospice said verbatim, word for word, my memory works that way, beats me what the hell their names are, but I know what they said.

Both my brother and sister have widely divergent recollections of what they said, hence the disagreements...

So fine, we will be putting him into a nursing home for a bit, just for the physical therapy machinery and staff they have there. When they fail to show progress and fail at getting him back on his feet I will be bringing him home. Screw my brother and sister and their "he might live longer in a home" all Dad has ever said is that he wants to die at home, who cares about "longer" when you are only talking about weeks or perhaps a month or two at most?

With Hospice to help and the equipment they will provide I will take care of him here, I really don't care what my siblings think about it. As long as Dad is still conscious he will agree to let me bring him home, I don't need their agreement.

Whatever you think of President Reagan or his politics, he could turn it on in a time of crisis. I remember his address to the nation after Challenger...I was 11 then and whenever I hear the "slipped the surly bonds of Earth and touched the face of God" clip nowadays, I get misty.

In truth, I was very briefly pissed, because I felt a bit misunderstood, but I also understand that you needed to do something to stop an argument which was clearly spiraling - and I frankly should have just let lie. There was no way my interlocutor (who I happen to like in real life as well as here) was going to see what I was trying to say, and frankly there was no way I was going to see her side at that point. The bickering aspect of it is a bit embarrassing for me.

Check on Hot Air, they think the T shirts say "Organizing for America", and the POTUS had them handed out to everyone there at a cost of 70K. A few problems with that.

1. The shirts say Tucson/America
2. The University gave them out.
3 Only a few rows up front got them, not 70K worth.

But don't let that stop it from going viral.

It is possible that she will be the sacrificial lamb ultimately for this. A nice martyr for various GOP types to cry crocodile tears over, while there is a slight toning down in the rhetoric. She has sufficient enemies in the party that she would fill their long term strategies while shutting her down.

Overall though the GOP message of fear, hatred and lies with intense rhetoric reminiscent of the days of yellow journalism, is too much of a winning strategy and money maker to be toned down for long.

WTF? My brother, my sister, and I were all in the same room with my father this morning at 10:00am talking to Hospice about our options. Apparently each one of us heard what that person wanted to hear, according to my wanna be psychoanalyst brother anyway...

*And that's the way it was in the Garcia Household on 01/12/2011*

First, hang in there.

Second, my deepest sympathies.

Rich Lowry

The pep-rally atmosphere was inappropriate and disconcerting, but President Obama turned in a magnificent performance. This was a non-accusatory, genuinely civil, case for civility, in stark contrast to what we’ve read and heard over the last few days. He subtly rebuked the Left’s finger-pointing, and rose above the rancor of both sides, exactly as a president should. Tonight, he re-captured some of the tone of his famous 2004 convention speech. Well done

Partisan, but overall Lowery is sane and respectful. Hopefully those who are not so are shunned.

Here are a few of the responding comments to Lowry's commentary. They're running a bit more to the negative than positive, maybe about 70-30, maybe 60-40 (if you want to be charitable) anti-Obama/anti-Lowry.

"Rich has a history of being suckered in by The One, so that's one reason why so many of us are disappointed in him."

"A community organizer extraordinaire such as our president did what most community organizers do in times of crisis - they hide in upstairs apartment while the volunteers do all the street work."

"I honestly can't understand why conservatives contribute money to this website or have subscriptions."

"This was a political spectacle; that's all it was. Conducted by a man who just kicked off his re-election campaign atop the bodies of the dead and wounded victims. And, quite frankly, you're just about as disgusting as he is for praising him for it."

"The guys is a wannabe professorial boor. But thanks for just spouting the conventional wisdom Rich, it's super helpful."

"I have to wonder if Rich saw the same speech I did. This was one of the smarmiest performances from a politician I have ever seen and the competition is fierce."

"Oh, spare me! He's not sincere. He's never been sincere. President "Bring A Gun To A Knife Fight, Whose Ass Do I Kick?, They're Being Hostage Takers" Obama had to go fulfill his Mourner-in-Chief duties and did the usual above-average job reading what the TelePrompTer told him to say. Yay for reading!"

"The whole scene was extremely distasteful and unpresidential."

"Mr. Lowry, never give Barack Obama anything. He's a radical adversary, and when he behaves as if he weren't, it's fraudulent and in the service of his radical ends. You've just helped his radical agenda, and served no other purpose in so doing."

"I believe your "take" on Obama's performance is less sophisticated than appropriate. Obama the "community organizer" (read "left-wing agitator": the only real job he ever had) is employing one of the oldest tricks of incremental incitement/agitation in the book (Alinsky?). It is to have others do the dirty work, while pretending to be above the fray."

He addressed, touched on the unresolved issues, but left it at that. Very well broached. Hard to find anything wrong with it at all, all kinds of good.

re: #14 darthstar

He writes most of his own speeches, and those that speechwriters prepare are revised, revised, revised, until he agrees with every word. It's part of what makes him such a great statesman. It would suck to be an Obama speechwriter, because he'd work your ass off.

This one is for the books, though. Heck, most of Lincoln's speeches were written in water, so to speak. Most occasions simply don't present the opportunity for excellence; all one can do is get it said straight, quick, clean, and with maybe a little grace.

The other thing about great speeches is, you have to have something to say that needs to be said. You have to issue a call to action which needs to be heeded, and which will be heeded because you put it right.

It would be exhilarating to be the speechwriter. Doing a job that matters, where getting it right matters? Where the president knows the difference between boilerplate and good work, and gives you a lot to work with? Gives you the speech, but as with any writing, another pass with another eye can improve it, and that other eye is yours?

Scary. Exhausting. But exhilarating. Life comes, life goes. The best you can do is get something done that matters, and get it done right.

Switched on Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC to watch David Frum's comments post-speech, and caught afterward an interview with Congressman Bob Filner regarding the election-night antics of his opponent - Tea Party candidate Nick Popaditch and his supporters, which could best be described as a thuggish mob. During the interview, MSNBC segment also included a online statement from one of Popatitch's supporters - who just so happens to be a white nationalist member of Stormfront - regarding Jared Loughner:

I'm sure he was justified and I am enjoying this moment because this is how a revolution begins people, and it's funny I'm going to celebrate! - Aurick, "The Great White Elf"

There's video of the mob's antics- one to the supporters' accosting of Finer (including a Popditch supporter calling Filner a "dirty Jew" ~1:25 on the video), also, note that the guy in the eyepatch is Nick Popoditch, leading the mob.

Yes, for real. The final straw was when he wanted to start up an anti-LGF hate-spew on Christmas Eve. But even on the "Blogmocracy" most of the posters wanted to talk about positive subjects due to the holiday. They ignored "snork" and he left in a huff. He has yet to return.

Product Description
Professor John Bennett has just done the impossible-by altering the electrical characteristics of space itself, he has actually managed to change the speed of light. Now, after so many years of trying, he's finally about to realize his dream of becoming the most famous physicist in the world. But that dream is abruptly shattered when John discovers that his girlfriend, Dawn Whitmore, a cultural anthropologist, suffers from an incurable disease and has less than three years to live. Her only chance for survival requires that John sacrifice his career and use his technology to travel into the future to find a solution. Together with their friend Sam Tobin, John and Dawn enter into a secretive fifty-year stasis and ultimately emerge into the year 2055. But the incredibly divisive world they discover is not what they had hoped for: California has splintered into five states, each with dramatically different laws; increasingly sophisticated nano-viruses-a malicious form of nanotechnology-are continually released by anarchists known as nano-hackers; people live in constant fear of being electronically branded with the Scarlet Letter of the 21st Century. Has John really helped Dawn, or has he inadvertently signed her death warrant?

Now my brain hurts! You bastard!

OK, random rant: sometimes being a woman in public places is just a pain in the ass. I'm walking over the hill to talk to someone about a tutoring job, and a guy slows his car and makes eye contact. So I think he need fricking directions, and I stop.

"What's your name?" he asks.

"Why do you need to know?" I answer.

"Because," he says, "You're incredibly beautiful."

"Thank you," says I, and I start walking again.

Luckily he left it there and kept driving.

Note: I am not 'incredibly beautiful'. I am a rather average, zaftig lady in her late thirties. What distinguishes me physically is a rather large rack.

What do people expect to get out of these encounters? And what do they expect ME to get out of them?

Grew up in LA County, so a bunch of the local bands got a ton of airplay back on KNAC at the time. Big Suicidal Tendencies fan as well.

I was in the outer subruban northwest, frustrated by the disconnect *_*

re: #574 SanFranciscoZionist

And what do they expect ME to get out of them?

so ,, whats your name !?!?!

BOC and Hawkwnd for sure... More Cowbell!

KROQ in the 80s was an incredible station. That was the soundtrack to my short stay in LA. And when I got back to NY, I found WLIR on Long Island had flipped their format to KROQ East.

I've been listening to an internet station out of Dublin for the past couple of weeks, and a band I've been taken with is a Scottish trio called Biffy Clyro. They're pretty schizo musically, veering between very poppish material and some pretty cool hard proggish rock. And Simon Neil can write a song.

Biffy Clyro

I recommend 'Boom Blast & Ruin' and 'That Golden Rule' to you rock guys.

No they won't. Not even with the lesson that the hate of one twisted young soul is why we have this awful event to get past.

Contempt becomes anger. Anger becomes violence. Violence reduces us all. May we rise to a better way.

Let the stalkers mock all they wish. Let them swim their river of hate. We know the better way.

Very odd reaction from wingnuts. They seem to think Obama threw his liberal supporters under the bus by not blaming Palin and Fox News. They actually kinda liked the speech. Go figure.

re: #294 ausador

WTF? My brother, my sister, and I were all in the same room with my father this morning at 10:00am talking to Hospice about our options. Apparently each one of us heard what that person wanted to hear, according to my wanna be psychoanalyst brother anyway...

*And that's the way it was in the Garcia Household on 01/12/2011*

That's the way I see it too. You're the primary care provider and it's all your call. Also, I truly think the home environment gives greater chance for longer life. Good luck and G-d bless you and your efforts.
