It was excellent. Probably better off reading it anyway, as I hear the reactions from the crowd didn’t match the somber nature of the speech.

We have moved to a point in history where I am going to introduce my 30/30 theory.
At no point in the near future will a president achieve higher than 70 percent approval ratings because 30 percent (on the opposite side of that president) will automatically oppose. Likewise, a president will not have ratings less than 30 because 30 percent (on the same side as the prez) will support him/her no matter what.
We have moved past the days of wildly popular or wildly unpopular presidents, no matter how great or incompetent he or she may be.

Repost from down thread:
Four top AZ GOP leaders resigned this week because they are afraid of the crazy TPers. One was the head of the AZ GOP, the first black chair in AZ history. They feared for their lives. They’ve had “crosshairs” type of shit against them and one of the TP leaders did the finger-gun thing (like bang bang you’re dead) and it freaked the ex-GOP chair out. The one guy was a McCain guy (I don’t remember if he was the head of McCain’s campaign - something like that - and all had GOP cred. I’m on my iPhone or I’d post the link. Google it. Scary, scary shit.
Also, I read somewhere (but couldn’t find any links) that the university invitations called it “a celebration of life and unity” which could explain some of the applause. I, personally, felt the applause when Obama talked about each person, telling their story of their life, death or heroism on Saturday was appropriate, because it did celebrate each of their lives (even in some of their deaths). It was uplifting to hear about each of those affected people, either how they lived or, sadly, how they died (protecting loved ones, etc.)
The applause that bothered me was when Obama went to the podium and during his first few words. I thought that was out of place.

Morton Grove no longer has a gun ban. When the Supreme Court issued the Heller decision, Morton Grove had its lawyers examine the law to see if it would survive a challenge based on Heller. The lawyers concluded that the ban would not have survived such a challenge and so Morton Grove repealed the ban.

So, a quick story. I needed a fake gun for a costume (supposed to be a detective). Went to a Toys R’ Us. All They had was nerf guns. I asked an employee and she said they had a “SWAT kit.”
It included (all plastic): a badge, handcuffs, a fake walkie-talkie, a billy club and a combat knife.
There were a fer things wrong here. First, according to Toys R Us, SWAT members do not carry guns. Also, the combat knife was about seven inches long. So a fake gun is no good, but a knife big enough to gut a rhino is kosher.

Ancient winery found in Armenia
A UCLA-led team reported Monday that it had discovered a 6,000-year-old facility in an Armenian cave that contained everything necessary to produce wine from grapes, including a grape press, fermentation vats, storage jars, wine-soaked pottery shards and even a cup and drinking bowl.
The ancient winery is at least 1,000 years older than any similar installation previously known, and it was found in the same cave where researchers in June announced the discovery of the world’s oldest leather shoe.

Yep. Usually a compromise can be reached in larger cities. Just make the exterior fit in with the surrounding architecture, environs, etc. That’s if it’s a new building. Given that I remember a lot of 5 & 10s and Woolworths in NYC I don’t think it will be a problem in the long run. But, I see that they’re haggling over wages and such. Proposed location is in Brooklyn. I’ll let them figure it out.

The President’s statement is a speech, not testimony. It’s not evidence. And it’s not a statement of the official position of the investigation. This is just a dumb report. No court is going to dismiss, no jury is going to acquit, based on one sentence a President’s speech. What’s next? Theologians question Obama’s claim of puddles in heaven?

I just watched Obama’s speech. It was essentially perfect.
My only concern is that in the hopes of “more civil discourse” we do not allow a new spirit of political correctness cover up and smooth over actual evils which need to be called what they are and faced for what they are.
In contrast, I just discovered that Ms. Palin actually was self absorbed, narcissistic and tasteless enough to use the phrase “blood libel” in describing criticisms against her viscous style of rabble rousing and rebellion courting rhetoric.
Charles you wrote that up perfectly.
For me, it was really good that I was in the lab and have been happily productive when she made that asinine and depraved (even for her) comment. Really. There are probably adequate words to express my disgust, but most of the ones that spring to mind have four letters - save their more salty equivalents in other languages.
I suppose I will just say this. I have always refrained from the word shiksa. It is actually incredibly mean, and even most Jews don’t know that it actually means female abomination. Shagitz would be the masculine.
That shiksa Palin has no right to invoke blood libels if only because the Jews were innocent of hideous lie of the blood libel while she certainly has on some level contributed to the delusional fantasies of those paranoids already on the edge.

Quite Concur.

In real life one might just think to themselves “I’m face to face with with a dumb b*tch right now. Eff it, I’m cool.” and move on. But on the internet… their words sit there, in black and white, staring you in the face perpetually.
Frequently, its almost too much to take. The double edged nature of the internet i guess…

Liberals hate Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is getting some pushback about their attempt to move into Manhattan. The mosque was given a permit in Manhattan. Therefore, Pam must ally with the Wal-Martians against Doomberg and the Jihadis.
I don’t quite know what the term is for the kind of logical error contained in this leap of logic, but Pam is very good at them.
But liberals *love* Costco, which has pretty much the same product range at the same prices — but which also pays their employees a living wage, plus health care. They believe that lower turnover and lower theft it really works out the same over the long term, and they’re constantly fighting about it with Wall Street analysts.

WTF? Looking at something on Twitter. Maybe I should link it I don’t know. But it’s some freak with the name of “JaredTheJEW” regarding Jared Loughner.

Kind of surprised it took this long to uncover this kind of connection:
Arizona massacre gunman Jared Loughner’s downward spiral may have been touched off by a broken high school romance and fueled by drug use — but it was not politically motivated, according to his best friend in high school.
Zach Osler, in an interview Wednesday with ABC’s “Good Morning America,” said: “He did not watch TV.
[…]
Osler said he instead suspects that Loughner was motivated by a documentary called, “Zeitgeist: The Movie,” which slams currency-based economics.
“I really think that this ‘Zeitgeist’ documentary had a profound impact upon Jared Loughner’s mindset and how he viewed the world that he lives in,” he said.
Yeah - I’m sure that libertarian lunatic rightwing vitriol had nothing, whatosever, with driving this guy over the edge.

Just can’t win. Obama plays it cool and strikes a decent centrist chord but the wingnuts still find the dumbest things to get outraged about.
They wouldn’t be wingnuts if they didn’t get off on their perpetual outrageous outrage.
Seriously, wingnuts…life’s too fucking short to get wound up over every perceived slight.

What a nasty, partisan hack bitch:
Once again Urkel has found his props—a bunch of murdered people.
Everyone involved in this obscene debacle should hang their heads in shame
This entire event was an abomination, a disgrace. The exploitation of *everyone* was obscene.
A reminder what this disgusting creature had to say about Sarah Palin’s “blood libel” speech just hours earlier:
With courage & grace, @SarahPalinUSA provides the dignified leadership missing for far too long. Thank you Governor.
Unbelievable.

re: #16 Soap_Man
We have moved to a point in history where I am going to introduce my 30/30 theory.
Do you really think things have changed that much in only one administration?
Bush had 90% approval during the rally-round-the-flag phase immediately after 9/11; and he’d fallen to 23% by the time he left (lower than Nixon ever went).

Simply amazing. That was an amazing speech. It’s difficult to find words to describe how i feel, except maybe that I feel inspired to be a better person.
I know it’s been quoted a lot, but I really feel the need to repost it. I, along with many other lizards from the look of it, teared up a bit during this part:
She saw public service as something exciting and hopeful.
She was off to meet her congresswoman, someone she was sure was good and important and might be a role model.
She saw all this through the eyes of a child, undimmed by the cynicism or vitriol that we adults all too often just take for granted.
I want to live up to her expections.
I want our democracy to be as good as Christina imagined it.
I want American to be as good as she imageined it.
All of us — we should do everything we can to make sure this country lives up to our children’s expectations.
Thank you Mr. President.

I watched Palin’s video first to keep it fair, and I noticed that after the 2:00 mark, there’s five minutes devoted solely to defending herself. It isn’t about her, duh. Obama’s remarks, though in a different venue, called for unity, and respected the victims. I admit, I cried. He mentioned that she opened her eyes, and did so with great passion.
Palin is toast. She traded leadership for celebrity a long time ago and will never be on the same level as the man she says is hurting America.

Everyone ‘raved’ about the president’s speech last night -
Scarborough and his gang all raved - even deuche bag Pat Buchanan had to give him props for taking the middle ground.
Fox and Friends did the same - except the dark haired guy on fox and friends added in it felt like the Wellstone funeral a bit and that they made ‘t-shirts’ for it…
My take is this -
These speeches always end out being shmaltzy and over the top. I personally think Obama doesn’t like these speeches, they’d make me uncomfortable as well, bcs it’s kind of phony rah rah sympathy but people eat the over the top shmaltziness up…. you have to be a bit of a snake oil guy, like Clinton, to master this, Clinton’s snake oil salesman charm is always FLIPPED ON….
I thought the speech was kind over the top and shmaltzy but that’s what people want politicians to do in situations like this I guess…. It kind of irks me… and furthermore, the nonstop over the top ENDLESS “”analysis”” of this…. by the nonstop 24 hour news networks is NAUSEATING….
105 | Romantic Heretic Thu, Jan 13, 2011 1:48:18pm |
Personally, my thought after watching the speech was, “That’s one for the history books.”
Well done, Mr. President.
106 | tomg51spence Thu, Jan 13, 2011 2:02:35pm |
Well done.
His best speech that I have heard.
I hope it helps in every way.
Although I wasn’t sure about “expanding my morale compass” or something like that, but never mind - inconsequential in the bigger picture.
(I’m nearly a wingnut - had to point out something…)
