My 2011 Pledge to John Hawkins

Wingnuts • Views: 27,621

It’s true! I’ve won a coveted spot on the 20 Most Annoying Liberals of 2010 list! This one goes on the mantle.

I hereby pledge that in order to move up the list from #17 (I know I’ll never make #1, which is permanently assigned to Barack Obama), I shall work even harder this year to annoy the living shit out of wingnut hack John Hawkins.

Love the quote there about the Ground Zero mosque. They throw every Muslim in the world in league with the 9/11 hijackers, but God-Forbid that you insinuate they had anything to do with the attack on Saturday; You're just a evil liberal trying to smear everyone with the actions of a lone nut.

I swear to God, it's like watching a bad comedy.

Arizona massacre gunman Jared Loughner's downward spiral may have been touched off by a broken high school romance and fueled by drug use -- but it was not politically motivated, according to his best friend in high school.

Zach Osler, in an interview Wednesday with ABC's "Good Morning America," said: "He did not watch TV.

[...]

Osler said he instead suspects that Loughner was motivated by a documentary called, "Zeitgeist: The Movie," which slams currency-based economics.

"I really think that this 'Zeitgeist' documentary had a profound impact upon Jared Loughner's mindset and how he viewed the world that he lives in," he said.

Does anyone know anything specific about this moive? All I've found is that Alex Jones was a big fan of the first movie of this series - not so much a fan of the following movie.

A bittersweet day it has been, as the President and other assorted elected officials/Tuscon heros made wonderful speeches to the Nation that we all wish they would have never had the opportunity/reason to make, thanks to this madman and our polluted political dialog.

Ah. I see. Another rambling lunatic. Well, I knew that. Here's the excerpt:

Generally speaking, it is historically accurate to say that the Mainstream Media simply isn't in the business of challenging the Status Quo. The limits of debate are firmly set. Virtually all ideas, persons or groups who have succeeded in changing the world for the better, later to be hailed as heros in the public mind, started out being condemned by those in the Mainstream Media who latch on to the dominant world view of the time. Even Martin Luther King Jr., a peaceful, loving, wonder of a man who contributed more to our social progress than likely any humanitarian in the US history, was followed by the CIA and publicly humiliated as a “Communist” which he even had to defend in front of a Congressional Committee. In fact, you can rest assured that if King were alive in the current paradigm today and seeking an equal form of justice - he would be given the name: “Terrorist”.

Another crazy cult.

He then goes on to make a comment I agree with:

But that doesn't diminish his earlier attempt to justify his special brand of craziness by saying that MLK, like he, was condemned by the "mainstream media."

Zeitgeist: The Movie

"Part II", entitled All the World's a Stage, uses integral footage of several 9/11 conspiracy theory films to claim that the September 11 attacks were either orchestrated or allowed to happen by elements within the United States government in order to generate mass fear, initiate and justify the War on Terror, provide a pretext for the curtailment of civil liberties, and produce economic gain. These claims include that the US government had advance knowledge about the attacks, the response of the military deliberately let the planes reach their targets, and the World Trade Center buildings 1, 2, and 7 underwent a controlled demolition.

In a March 17, 2009 New York Times article, Alan Feuer reported that Peter Joseph had indicated that he had "moved away from" his opinion on whether the September 11 attacks were an inside job perpetrated by the U.S. government. Peter Joseph later stated that his stance on 9/11 had not changed.

[...]

Chris Forbes, Senior lecturer in Ancient History of Macquarie University and member of the Synod of the Diocese of Sydney, severely criticized Part I of the movie, asserting that it has no basis in serious scholarship or ancient sources, and that it relies on amateur sources that recycle frivolous ideas from one another, rather than serious academic sources, commenting, "It is extraordinary how many claims it makes which are simply not true."

Passers-by

When you go walking by night up a street and a man, visible a long way off--for the street mounts uphill and there is a full moon--comes running toward you, well, you don't catch hold of him, not even if he is a feeble and ragged creature, not even if someone chases yelling at his heels, but you let him run on.

For it is night, and you can't help it if the street goes uphill before yo in the moonlight, and besides, these two have maybe started that chase to amuse themselves, or perhaps they are both chasing a third, perhaps the first is an innocent man and the second wants to murder him and you would become an accessory, perhaps they don't know anything about each other and are merely running seperately home to bed, perhaps they are night birds, perhaps the first man is armed.

And anyhow, haven't you a right to be tired, haven't you been drinking a lot of wine? You're thankful that the second man is now long out of sight.

Doesn't look as if it's a hard fast rule by Dawkins that the "defining quote" is one taken from the person in question. There are several others (besides Charles') that aren't

And no, thats NOT a defense of Hawkins , its an observation.

Now this is funny (imho)

Nothing pisses of a detractor more than not taking the bait!!

New York Jets defensive back Antonio Cromartie calls New England Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady an asshole, and that Cromatie "hates" Brady

Bradys reponse,,,,
Brady said Patriots coach Bill Belichick and offensive play-caller Bill O’Brien have both called him the A-word on multiple occasions and they like him, so he theorized that perhaps Cromartie likes him as well.

That's what I did. I was involved for a while in a support capacity and then was asked to run . I never, ever, ever thought I'd do the 'frontman/woman' thing but it ended up happening. I sometimes still don't believe that I actually did it. It ended up that I had to make a choice, to keep going in that direction or not. Did a lot of soul searching because by then I really had a good handle on what it meant and what it would be like. I decided that it, it really wasn't for me. Being a 'public' face changes your life, both positively and negatively. For me the negative outweighed the positive so I chose to not keep going.

136 Obdicut  Thu, Jan 13, 2011 4:53:41am

re: #135 mr.fusion

"Liberal" and "conservative" are meaning-free terms outside of context. In the US, they almost entirely map to "Supports the Democrats" or "Supports the GOP". That is becoming less true, as the GOP heads into total insanity.

There's so many different areas, too: social conservatives are a totally different thing from law-and-order conservatives.

It's all a rich tapestry.

Yeah, jokes about blood libel really aren't going to get a laugh out of me. I'm fairly certain Palin's bastardization of it and the support she's getting from so many of the right for using the term so wildly inappropriately is going to permanently corrupt the definition, and another importance piece of Jewish history is going to pass out of the realm of common knowledge.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I think all this gnashing of teeth over Palin using the term "Blood Libel" is an Outrageous Outrage. (OMG OMG OMG did Alouette just say that?)

There hasn't been an actual "Blood Libel" in 100 years, since the Tsarist trial of Mendel Beilis. Sure, the Arab media is full of blood libels, but they're also full of other "Zionist plots" like trained sharks and spy vultures.

Should Black people froth every time someone says "picnic" (although the alleged racist origins of "picnic" seem to be a myth, the word actually has a much more benign etymology)

Around here... with a situation like that... when the roads are almost impassable... we stay or make some arrangements to stay somewhere close by... a friend, a hotel...

I remember 4 years ago, I was on a 6 month contract at a big medical software company, and they were predicting 3-4 foot of snow north of Denver (I was working in Lewisville)... I made arrangements to stay at a hotel in the business park... I came in the next day... I was one of about 12 employees out of 200 people working there that came in.

I did that because that day was the last day on contract and I wanted them to remember what I did. Figured that was good for business.

Yeah ,, you know where our Denver place is (Englewood). Theres a hotel right there. Two of the operators have been stranded at the teleport when the others can't get there and they trade off being at work and staying in the hotel

Here, we have everything we need except a shower, even a place to sleep. Theres a grocery store across the road from our entrance so it's livable

re: #162 albusteve

yes, here's a bit more
[Link: online.wsj.com...]

From the article at your link:

The motivation for such killings is usually based on psychotic thinking, not political thinking. Dennis Sweeney killed Allard Lowenstein because he believed that Lowenstein had implanted a transmitter in his teeth that was sending messages to him. Russell Weston stormed the Capitol because he believed the government had hidden a machine there that could reverse time.

The solution to this situation is obvious—make sure individuals with serious mental illnesses are receiving treatment. The mistake was not in emptying the nation's hospitals but rather in ignoring the treatment needs of the patients being released. Many such patients will take medication voluntarily if it is made available to them. Others are unaware they are sick and should be required by law to receive assisted outpatient treatment, including medication and counseling, as is the case in New York under Kendra's Law. If they do not comply with the court-ordered treatment plan, they can and should be involuntarily admitted to a hospital. Arizona has such a provision in its laws, but it is almost never used.

Check the bolded parts.

People suffering delusions find them to be quite real, and most often cannot be convinced that they are ill and that the delusions are illogical and make no sense.

Which leads to the next piece, which is they are unaware they are ill and won't voluntarily seek treatment or take their meds.

My youngest brother is convinced that:
1. The home alarm system my mom & dad had in their house was really some sort of recording device that was recording information about him and sending it - somewhere. He was so convinced of this that he tore the wiring apart to disable the thing.
2. That when he lived in Texas, not only were his neighbors stalking and harrassing him, they had recruited a whole bunch of other folks as well, and whenever he went somewhere, there was a whole line of cars following him for the purpose of spying on him and harrassing him.
3. When he moved from Texas to Louisiana, these same people sold their property in Texas, followed him to La. and bought the house next door to my parents house (where he was living) for the purpose of spying on him and harrassing him.

There was nothing, not one thing we could tell him, about how illogical that was, to convince him otherwise. HOWEVER, he is just savvy enough so that he doesn't talk about those things to a physician performing a cursory exam - it would take some time with a specialist to build enough trust that he would talk about this. So he appears quite sane; but he isn't.

He's been in treatment twice; and walked away both times. I know I'll get a call one day that he has hurt himself or someone else, and I dread the day.

I can hope against hope that Palin's victimhood will result in more people understanding what a blood libel really is, how often it was used against Jews, and why being accused of creating a climate of violence with dangerous rhetoric is nothing, at all, like a blood libel.

As I said before, what angers me most is that Palin's accusation of the blood libel was towards people who think that her violent rhetoric means she bears some responsibility for the dangerous climate of violence. Included among those critics is Giffords. So, to me, Palin is accusing a Jew of blood libel. That is beyond the pale for me.

I don't think Giffords is going to exactly change her mind about violent rhetoric if (and I hope so much that she does) regain her faculties after this attack.

A more serious complaint is that Loughner was able to legally buy a weapon even though he was weird enough to induce fear at his community college. School authorities finally told him not to come back until he got a bill of health from a mental health professional. But none of this showed up in the background check when he went to buy a gun.

Was going to reply to you before, but I got pulled away...

I think there is a large difference between terms that have entered the general vernacular and those that haven't. Hip Hip, witch hunt have been a part of the general English language for centuries now. Their original meaning is now more a matter of etymology than definition.

However, I do not think this process is necessarily a positive thing, nor do I think Blood Libel has become an accepted synonym for 'murderous libel'. So while I do use the English language as it exists today, including a turn of phrase such as 'witch hunt', I won't encourage such treatment for other words like Blood Libel, holocaust or genocide.

The stage musical "The Fantasticks," which was the longest running musical in the history of theatre, which opened in New York in 1960 and ran 42 years at the same theatre, has a song called "The Rape Song."

In the dialog intro to the song, the classical sense of the word is discussed, the latin origins, from the word "rapier" in the archaic sense of an abduction or kidnapping. And the song is about abducting a young woman.

Just an example of another (and basically accepted) use of the word... FYI.

Nation is an amazing book. It's for ages of 7-10, and has more death and tragedy than any of his 'adult' books. It's a book written about death, faith, and atheism, by a man who knows he's dying.

It's a hell of a book.

FYI.

That's different to me. Hard to describe, but the example Obicut presented belittles the victim of an unwelcome ,forceful, often violent crime. That being raped is somehow only equal to losing a sports game particularly badly.

The example you present is simply another meaning of the word. Doesn't stir that same terrible comparison in me. But this all fairly fresh to me, so I could easily be overreacting.

Maybe President Obama was saving the magic for a time when we really needed it.
For me, Obama’s best moment came when he warned that “what we can’t do is use this tragedy as one more occasion to turn on one another.”

I totally agree with that. There is so much blame going around since the shooting that everyone but the gunman himself has been blamed for it.

I understand.

But, the song did finally stir some terrible comparisons out in the politically correct word. In the 90's the authors wrote an alternative song that a theatre could use in place of "It Depends on What you Pay" some people will be offended no matter what.

Others are unaware they are sick and should be required by law to receive assisted outpatient treatment, including medication and counseling, as is the case in New York under Kendra's Law. If they do not comply with the court-ordered treatment plan, they can and should be involuntarily admitted to a hospital.

Do you realize how many people would fall into this category, many of whom will never harm anyone?

This is not a problem that easily lends itself to facile answers. Yes, more outpatient treatment including medication and counseling is a hugely important first step, and yes, hospitalization at viable institutions should be a viable and more accessible option (I don't know if you've visited a patient in any still-existing mental hospitals, but I have been in a couple and they are horrendous) but simple "non-compliance" should not lead to automatic involuntary commitment.

Just because someone is mentally ill, they should not lose their rights to freedom. It needs to be established that they present a real and present danger to themselves or someone else - and in fact, in most places where I've lived, you can have someone committed now based on those criteria.

As an aside - compared to the community-based ways that mental illness is dealt with in many countries has proven, in many studies, to result in significantly better outcomes for the mentally ill than the medicate/medicate and institutionalize methods that have been used historically in this country.

I am a caretaker for a mentally ill brother. I give him psychotropic medication injections every couple of weeks, which keeps his voices and delusions to a manageable level - but every time I give him a shot I think of those studies that show that long-term prognosis for mental illness is better in countries where they don't use psychotropic medications at nearly the same level that we do here. I've made peace with the trade-off - for in my brother's specific case, all-in-all, things have worked out pretty well to the point where he's stable and reasonably happy. But there have been times when he was considered to be "non-compliant," and if he had been involuntarily hospitalized at those times, I have little doubt that he would be far, far worse off than he is now.

re: #257 sattv4u2

It offends me that you think I may be offended !!

For the musical theatre buffs... the controversy...

Although the musical was a success, The Fantasticks' book became somewhat controversial due to its repeated use of the word "rape." In the original production, when El Gallo offers to stage the phony kidnapping of Luisa, he refers to the proposed event as a "rape", although he makes it clear that he uses the word only in its traditional literary sense (Latin "rapere") of "abduction", explaining that many classical works, including Alexander Pope's The Rape of the Lock, use the word in this sense. (See raptio and bride kidnapping.) In his song "It Depends on What You Pay" he describes different kidnapping scenarios—some comic or outlandish—that he classifies as the "Venetian rape", the "Gothic rape", the "Drunken rape", etc. However, as the public issues of rape and sexual assault became more of a delicate subject during the play's long run, some people in the audience became puzzled by the use of the word.

To deal with changing audience perceptions, the book is sometimes edited to replace the word "rape" with alternatives such as "abduction" or the similar-sounding "raid." In addition, in 1990, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, the authors, wrote an optional replacement piece called "Abductions", which uses the music of the "Rape Ballet" (although this song did not replace "It Depends on What You Pay" at the Sullivan Street Playhouse, where, with the edits made in the book, audiences did not seem to have much difficulty in accepting the song).[31] MTI (Music Theater International), which licenses the show, has made "Abductions" available, both music and lyrics, as an alternate choice in the event of someone being offended by the word "rape".

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

My recommendation, don't see the show if the theatre is using the alternative song.

I don't know what "alternate" version was available since the authors didn't write any alternative song until 1990? And if there were schools changing the lyrics as written in 1967, then unless they had permission from the publisher to substitute certain words (not impossible), they would have been breaking the performance license.

stuck on stupid....a 30 round clip probably increases the chance of jamming by three times....a really smart killer would take five minutes and learn to change 10 round clips almost instantaneously....whatever....of all the 900, or however many gun laws in the US, the assault weapons ban was the worst of them all and did nothing to decrease gun violence

The ban appears
to have had clear short-term effects
on the gun market, some of which were
unintended consequences: production of
the banned weapons increased before the
law took effect, and prices fell afterward.
This suggests that the weapons became
more available generally, but they must
have become less accessible to criminals
because there was at least a short-term
decrease in criminal use of the banned
weapons.

One of the weirdest for me is the word 'rape'. I heard a sportscaster describing a team as 'just raping' another team, and I was kinda stunned. I guess it's really not that different from someone saying "They murdered the other team", but it feels wrong as hell to me.

re: #233 McSpiff

Well, I agree. But I think that's a more recent thing for me, since speaking with a rape survivor. Perhaps if I had been as impacted by a murder I'd feel the same way about its flippant use? I'm not sure. Still learning this whole 'life' thing.

There is a good bit of difference, language-wise. The word "rape" has changed meanings through its history. It was not always forcible sex per se. The famous "Rape of the Sabine Women" doesn't describe the modern usage--it is the forcible carrying-off of a rival tribes women to provide mates. Even today the Italian word "rapina" describes theft, not sex. So historically, rape is more subject to metaphore. Not so "Blood Libel".

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Lebanon's political crisis deepens and the Lebanese President has called for talks to begin on Monday about forming a new government.

All of this is the result of Hizbullah doing everything in its power to avoid justice for its role in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. International investigations are on the verge of announcing Hizbullah's involvement in the assassination (linking back to Syria) and the group couldn't handle that.

So, they withdrew from the government and caused a political crisis to avoid justice.

Now, Iran is trying to claim that this situation is the fault of Israel and the US, even though Hizbullah is the one to withdraw from the government because it wants to avoid justice.

We're actually supposed to get some more snow here - only around an inch or so, but yeah. We're slowly rebuilding our snow piles after the freezing rain melted away a good chunk of the December snow. Interesting random fact: This year's December snow series is one of the biggest opening snows on record, eclipsed only by the infamous Halloween Storm of 1991.

Yeah we lost all of our first snow here too. Big three day melt that turned everything to mud. Then it dropped right down again and it all came back within a couple of days. I've been snow in a few times already this year though where I live it's pretty common. I usually make sure I have enough to survive on for at least a week just to be safe.

Besides blaming an entire industry with an impeccable safety record for BP's failure, the commission also ignores the failure of federal oversight or advance preparation for such a spill and recommends the creation of another entirely new federal agency to oversee all offshore oil and gas drilling.

The commission did not recommend a needed resumption of offshore drilling under safer rules. It just recommended more rules, costly studies and the hiring of outside "experts" to promulgate new regulations to stifle an already dying industry.

this is how you fix a death grip on industry...it's not difficult at all for the feds to take control of large swaths of the economy...so one wonders, why are they doing this?

[Link: www.investors.com...]

Maybe because they don't want another massive spill?

It's easy to call the Deepwater Horizon incident just a BP thing and therefore write it off as if it can't happen again, but that is inaccurate. Surrounding that incident was the usual array of oilfield services contractors, none of which had the sense to prevent the blowout. It wasn't just BP.

Every now and then an incident occurs that makes (or should make) an entire industry reassess its practices. Or, if the industry is in denial and refuses to do so, cause that industry's regulators to force it upon them. It happened in commercial aviation (for example) after Eastern put an L1011 into the Everglades. You could argue that Eastern (and the other airlines) had plenty of incentive to avoid crashes without the FAA and NTSB meddling in their business. But the FAA/NTSB did meddle after that crash, and their meddling no doubt has prevented lots of other crashes.

Likewise here. The rest of the industry has gone into "that was just BP, WE would never do that" mode. But they use the same support contractors, they buy the same hardware, they hire from the same labor pool. People who work for BP one day work for Exxon the next. You have to address the industry, unless you just don't give a shit whether this will happen again.

That isn't a government power grab. That is the government doing what we put it in place to do: protect us, our economy, our beaches, and all the rest from risks that we as citizens cannot manage ourselves.

This is what happens when accountants (not pilots, not engineers) occupy the top management positions. Everything becomes all about the "bottom line" and getting stuff done "on time" and "under budget." It was shown that BP cut corners and ignored safety precautions because the upper management bean counters were urging them to work faster and cheaper.

I heard a sportscaster describing a team as 'just raping' another team, and I was kinda stunned.

That usage is ubiquitous among my 17yo son and his friends. They certainly aren't the fist to use it and I suspect the sportscaster was pretty young and didn't give a second thought to using it. Another usage among kids that makes me cringe is the use of "gay" as a replacement for "stupid".

Yes and no. I agree that in the BP scenario that was a big factor. In the cockpit awareness example though, traditional cockpit hierarchies (that were part of the pilot culture) were a big part of the problem, and it wasn't just (or mainly) about profit maximization.

But your larger point is right. The stakes are too high for us to simply trust the BPs of the world. When they screw up, it isn't just themselves they damage.

News that not news to me...

U.S. jobless claims jumped to their highest level since October while food and energy costs boosted producer prices, pointing lingering headwinds for an economic recovery that had been showing renewed vigor.

[snip]

Despite the more positive outlook for growth in recent weeks, the job market still appeared to be struggling.

The number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment benefits rose unexpectedly to 445,000 from 410,000 in the prior week, the Labor Department said on Thursday. It was the biggest one-week jump in about six months, confounding analyst forecasts for a small drop to 405,000.

Confounding... can't they pick up a local newspaper, or listen to some news. A lot of retail has fired and/or laid off at the beginning of this month. I got laid off from Kroger. This morning, on the radio, I hear Yellow book is laying off, Quiznos (a Colorado based sandwich chain) is laying off, and there has been something new about firing and layoffs in Colorado every week since 1-1-2011.

Confounded... ?

I was "new" to the retail grocery business this past year, I was a cashier at a Kroger store for 9 months. I started hearing in December about the yearly layoffs that happen a lot in retail, holidays are over, they cut the staff back.

I also hear from long time employees that our store manager usually was able to work on the hours, cut back some hours, shift some people around, push for people to take their vacations around this time of year, a number of tactics to fulfill the orders from corporate on cut hours, but without having to lay anyone off.

But last week, after what appeared to be the beginning of these yearly layoffs or hour cuts became a massacre. They laid off 11 people total. Once again, the long term employees tell me they have never seen something like this before. And it's evident that this was Kroger division wide, including the work force in the different HQ's.

I could get called back around Easter, which is typically when grocery retail picks back up.

I'm not going to worry right now too much. I have a paid and ready trip to Paris to start tomorrow, and I qualify for some of that unemployment stimulus. So, I'm going to probably be getting an unemployment check for a while. Because there's certainly no high tech jobs readily available. A high tech position around here is getting 500+ applicants per job.

MB Fairy is working harder than Palin, Obama, and Breitbart combined. All for no pay!

I thought we decided yesterday that the Magic Balance Fairy was gender neutral.

I missed the memo.

What's the gender neutral honorific? Misster?

I'd still like to sort out if the slams are BS, as indicated at TPM. Not that I trust that sight a lot, but the truth is hard to discern here.

I don't think TPM is going out of it's way to carry water for Boehner. It would appear that Boehner had prior engagements, and he just couldn't go. Maybe he should have cancelled them, but I think it would be best to just give the guy the benefit of the doubt.

I mean, keep in mind the reason Boehner stayed behind was to attend a vigil in DC.

That almost got top billing at the Fudge Report.

Now, articles about Congresswoman Giffords opening her eyes are getting nasty comments from wicked pathetic little trolls.

386 Amory Blaine  Thu, Jan 13, 2011 10:22:49am

We're Arizona shooting victims too, says Tea Party co-founder

First Trent Humphries, co-founder of Tucson's Tea Party plays victim:

"A nine-year-old girl lies in the morgue. A member of Congress faces a lifetime of struggle to recover from a bullet in the brain. A city is bracing itself for a string of funerals as it tries to fathom the carnage.

But Trent Humphries says there is another innocent victim left by Jared Lee Loughner's killing of six people and wounding of 14 others in his assassination attempt against Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. It is his Tea Party movement and, more particularly, his family. The killings, he says, are evolving into a conspiracy to destroy his organisation and silence criticism of the government."

Then he plays the blame game:

"Pressed on whether he was concerned when he heard Giffords's warning about Palin's use of gunsights and calls for supporters not to retreat but "reload" in fighting Democrats, Humphries did not retreat. "It's political gamesmanship. The real case is that she [Giffords] had no security whatsoever at this event. So if she lived under a constant fear of being targeted, if she lived under this constant fear of this rhetoric and hatred that was seething, why would she attend an event in full view of the public with no security whatsoever?" he said. "For all the stuff they accuse her [Palin] of, that gun poster has not done a tenth of the damage to the political discourse as what we're hearing right now. There are people who are genuinely confused, scared, and I understand it. But there are also people who are deliberately manipulating this event and tragedy for political ends.""

A "big" vigil (for lack of a better word) or a vigil at his house?

If it was a "big" one (again, for lack of a better word) maybe they wanted someone important there, too.

We are going through a period of rapid cultural change. The internet has brought massive social upheaval as millions of people are just starting to take part in it.

I think what we are seeing now is the culture adapting to this new reality, and I think it is inevitable that it will be a sloppy process. Eventually, even old people will understand the concept of trolling, and people will just learn to dismiss asshats without getting as upset.

We are only a decade or two into a massive change in the way we communicate as a culture.

Yes, I have seen that information. Sergey has posted that the "Jewish" anti-Semite known as Israel Shamir has been very active in reviving the Blood Libel. I think the Hasidic group of which I am a member is supposed to be deeply involved in this seekrit ritual.

Don't you just hate it when anti-Semites know more about what's going on in your shul basement than you do?

Note that Shamir is the least of it. The link I posted was about the so-called "letter of 500" (later - "letter of 5000") - the letter urging the ban on Judaism and Jewish organizations in Russia. As one item they had this "Jewish sect uses blood" libel. Many of the signatories are quite prominent, part of the Russian nationalist+"patriotic" intelligentsia, some members of Duma even (e.g. some prominent Communists). And the prosecutors' office refused to prosecute the author of the letter on specious grounds, refusing even to classify the letter as antisemitic (an expert wrote that the author was merely expressing himself according to the Orthodox Christian worldview (!)).
