Veteran Wounded in Tucson Shootings Blames Palin, Beck, and Angle

US News • Views: 44,861

Eric Fuller, the 63-year old veteran shot twice last Saturday in the attack that critically injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, said today that he blames the violent rhetoric of people like Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, and Sharron Angle.

“It looks like Palin, Beck, Sharron Angle and the rest got their first target,” Eric Fuller said in an interview with Democracy NOW.

“Their wish for Second Amendment activism has been fulfilled — senseless hatred leading to murder, lunatic fringe anarchism, subscribed to by John Boehner, mainstream rebels with vengeance for all, even 9-year-old girls.”

Now watch as Andrew Breitbart, Jim Hoft, and the rest of the right wing blogosphere go into overdrive to smear Mr. Fuller.

UPDATE at 1/16/11 12:02:14 pm

Here’s a reply to Jim Hoft’s latest dim-witted attack.

I think this gentleman has earned the right to speak his piece on this subject, in spades...and I think he's right on.

Palin and the TPGOP (formerly "the party of responsibility") should acknowledge that words have consequences, but they won't, because they're craven assholes with a thirst for political power.

It will take some self control for the wingnuts who say the calls to cool the rhetoric are calls for censorship to keep themselves from saying this guy should shut up.

They aren't known for their self control.

I don't agree that there's as strong a causal connection as he does. But I respect that, having taken bullets, having been there, he's going to be rather passionate about this.

I don't expect most people disagreeing with him are going to do so politely.

Over on Frum there have been a couple of trolls screaming that this man is a liar, but when you say that stuff about a wounded veteran it just makes ordinarily level-headed, non-partisan people really pissed.

Fuller seems like a remarkably thoughtful, sane man. If you read the whole interview, you can tell that he's thought carefully about what happened.

Apart from Frum, nobody on the right (nobody at all on the True Right) has seen fit to cover Fuller yet. Guess they need some time to figure out how to spin this one....

I really do agree with this.....but I can't escape the fact that this man (as mentally deranged as it seems he was) targeted a member of Congress. He could have gone to the school that kicked him out, to a mall, parking garage, his own parents, etc....but he didn't.

He targeted a member of Congress, and I think it's completely valid to wonder why. If he was as disengaged in the political process as we've been led to believe, how did he know Gabby's name? How did he know where she would be that morning? Why did he write the word "assassination" on a note he left? I will not place the blame on anyone other than the shooter, but these questions should be asked.

I sort of touched on this in elizajane's Featured Page. Right-wing extremist rhetoric won't, out-of-the-blue, turn someone into a murderer, but for someone already inclined to violence, it definitely provides inspiration and ideas of who to target:

The 45-year-old "highway shooter" who engaged in a 12-minute shootout with California Highway Patrol officers earlier this year now says Fox News host Glenn Beck has been an inspiration for his activity.
...
Observers of this most recent act were mystified by one of Byron Williams' reported targets: the Tides Foundation, a low-profile charitable organization known for funding environmentalists, community groups, and other organizations.

Would he have chosen the Tides Foundation if Beck hadn't demonized them first?

I think that the shooter listened to whackjob right-wing libertarians and then focused on his local congressperson as the closest identity to 'government'. She answered some question of his in a way that he felt dismissed by, and he fixated on her.

Address at Milwaukee, Wis., October, 14, 1912. Just before entering the auditorium at Milwaukee, an attempt was made on Colonel Roosevelt's life.

Friends, I shall ask you to be as quiet as possible. I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose. But fortunately I had my manuscript, so you see I was going to make a long speech, and there is a bullet - there is where the bullet went through - and it probably saved me from it going into my heart. The bullet is in me now, so that I cannot make a very long speech, but I will try my best.
. . .
it is a very natural thing that weak and vicious minds should be inflamed to acts of violence by the kind of awful mendacity and abuse that have been heaped upon me for the last three months by the papers in the interest of not only Mr. Debs but of Mr. Wilson and Mr. Taft.

Friends, I will disown and repudiate any man of my party who attacks with such foul slander and abuse any opponent of any other party; and now I wish to say seriously to all the daily newspapers, to the Republicans, the Democrat, and Socialist parties, that they cannot, month in month out and year in and year out, make the kind of untruthful, of bitter assault that they have made and not expect that brutal, violent natures, or brutal and violent characters, especially when the brutality is accompanied by a not very strong mind; they cannot expect that such natures will be unaffected by it.

PITTSBURGH -- The man accused of fatally shooting three Pittsburgh police officers and injuring two others was alternately described by friends as "an easygoing, fun-loving guy" and a known gun enthusiast who was prepared to die after he woke up on a bright spring Saturday morning.

[snip]

Perkovic said Poplawski feared "the Obama gun ban that's on the way" and "didn't like our rights being infringed upon."

"He wasn't involved in any gangs, any militias. He believed in his right to bear arms. He believed that hard economic times were going to put forward gun bans," Perkovic said.

By the way, a story I read somewhere said that another man heard the shots and ran over to help -- and he was armed. When he got there he saw someone holding a gun and nearly shot him.

The man with the gun was one of the victims, who had grabbed the gun away from Loughner. When the armed bystander drew down on him, other people yelled, "No, no! He's not the shooter!"

So for those of you who like to think that more guns would have done something to prevent the massacre -- in fact, there were plenty of guns around, and an innocent victim was very nearly killed because of them.

24 brownbagj  Fri, Jan 14, 2011 1:08:18pm

But, I do think Obama is trying to move us away from this conversation on this one shooting, so to speak, to a larger fully nationwide conversation.

And, I have defended Obama many times. I may be a conservative (in the true sense) but that does not mean, and it should not mean, that I have to attack him. I like him in many respects. Only in a few places do I disagree with him at all.

I read the people holding Loughner down shouted "drop it, drop it!" when he picked up the gun. As a gun owner (licensed even finger printed in Georgia), pulling a gun in this chaotic situation is about the worst thing that could happen.

The only time I can think where a citizen pulling a gun would be in a situation where innocents are barricaded behind the armed citizen so there is no chance for bystanders being shot or in a one on one situation.

Every other situation seems ripe to make things worse.

Good point:

That's what happens when you run with a firearm to a scene of bloody havoc. In the chaos and pressure of the moment, you can shoot the wrong person. Or, by drawing your weapon, you can become the wrong person—a hero mistaken for a second gunman by another would-be hero with a gun. Bang, you're dead. Or worse, bang bang bang bang bang: a firefight among several armed, confused, and innocent people in a crowd. It happens even among trained soldiers. Among civilians, the risk is that much greater.

Here ya go

This is a much more dangerous picture than has generally been reported. Zamudio had released his safety and was poised to fire when he saw what he thought was the killer still holding his weapon. Zamudio had a split second to decide whether to shoot. He was sufficiently convinced of the killer's identity to shove the man into a wall. But Zamudio didn't use his gun. That's how close he came to killing an innocent man. He was, as he acknowledges, "very lucky."

Palin and the TPGOP (formerly "the party of responsibility") should acknowledge that words have consequences, but they won't, because they're craven assholes with a thirst for political power.

Pfft. The conservative evangelical who was trying to raise interest in what he called The Civility Project gave up on the idea due to lack of interest and also the sheer amount of insults he was getting, even from other conservatives.

Until there's a fundamental shift in the mindset of the party, nothing's going to change for the GOP.

Her politics are pretty extreme, especially when it comes to Israel, terrorism and war. I used to be fascinated with her, trying to figure out if she's crazy, lying or just a rabid ideologue. I never really came to a solid conclusion but I suspect her ideology is so strong that she's not really connected to reality in any meaningful way.

91 Political Atheist  Fri, Jan 14, 2011 1:48:21pm

Perspective question. Is Arizona all that more commonly armed than in Israel? Those civilians that carry there have to watch out for all these same problems. I suspect they train more, but I do not know. Any current or former residents want to chime in?

When I took some classes back in 1990 I was told that in Israel, they carry without a bullet in the chamber. Every day carry winds up with dropped or bumped guns from time to time. They work the "rack the slide" into the gun draw. Every day carry has all these awkward moments. Getting out of a car, changing a jacket or sweater. Proper CCW is hard work. Needs ones full attention.

And then you have target ID, backstop issues. On and on.

Well since the guy is darn near untrained, I'm not surprised. And he has a point, given there was no one else with a gun to draw on anyway.

I have had CCW chats with Tucson PD officers because every time I went there for the Gem Show I carried, albeit in "open carry" status. I had a loaded .45 in my vehicle every time I went to and from the show. As a gun instructor I relished the chance to find out how they deal with CCW and all those guns in civilian hands.

I never had an incident or a problem.

105 otoc  Fri, Jan 14, 2011 2:04:27pm

It begins...
Eric Fuller's Blood Libel

You can be both the wounded survivor of a massacre and a vile, opportunistic, jerk
We now know from interviews with multiple people that Jared Lee Loughner did not actively follow politics, didn't listen to talk radio, or watch cable news. The one person who did describe him having any sort of political bent at any time remembers that several years ago he could have been described as very liberal.

These are all well-know, published facts. Eric Fuller, however, has chosen to keep right on demonizing political figures on the right, even though there is even indication that Loughner was in his own insane little world and may have been completely unaware that Boehner, Palin, Angle and Beck even existed, outside of possibly knowing their names.

Mr. Fuller, I'm glad that you served your nation in the past, but you are doing it a great disservice now. You dishonor yourself. You dishonor the dead.

And you spread far more bile and hatred than anyone else you would blame.

Meh. Fuller is wrong, but he also got shot. I have more than enough tolerance in my heart for a victim who wishes to lash out; it's a shame that anyone would/will use his pain opportunistically.

112 JamesWI  Fri, Jan 14, 2011 2:07:42pm
Now watch as Andrew Breitbart, Jim Hoft, and the rest of the right wing blogosphere go into overdrive to smear Mr. Fuller.

Over in the comment section at Althouse:

"Well the guy was a partisan before he got shot, and he was one after. He jumped to conclusions before the facts were in like most partisans. What is galling is that he is still not backing down. And no, being shot does not give him moral authority to slander people who had nothing to do with the shooting. If anything it makes him worse - he is exploiting his own tragedy for political gain. Disgusting."

Read: Sarah Palin is the real victim.

"I suspect the Bamster will use him as a prop in the State of the Union show."

And he must be getting coached by liberals to say these things......

"Sounds like leftard coaching to me. I guess getting shot, as unfortunate as that was, made him stupid."

Here's one person twisting herself into logical pretzels to try to defend Sharon Angle:

Picking on Sharron Angle for being enough of a political outsider to think that she could express an ordinary sort of opinion about the relationship of a free and armed people to their government without getting spun and smeared by the opposition is... rich. She didn't say anything unusual or shocking or in any way imply that armed revolt was desirable.

But that's what she was talking about, a general revolt if democracy fails. But not even if the Republicans had done poorly last election, could what she said be twisted into some sort of call to arms. And the Republicans did NOT do poorly last election, which EVEN IF someone were to accept the notion that any sort of 2nd Amendment activism (armed revolt) were being promoted, means that there simply wasn't a need since the Republicans won and now have the house. EVEN IF someone were to accept the ridiculous premise that it was an either/or sort of suggestion.

And here's some extra craziness, complete with "blood libel"

More Blood Libel. And all because the Soros owned Dems lost many Mid Term House seats in the last election. What do they pull next if this trick doesn't work? A faked attack upon Obama may be coming next. Soros said Obama is expendable if he cannot get the Cap and Trade prize that Soros always wanted above all else. I say No Blood for Wind Power.

Mind you, this site is on the tame side when it comes to right-wing blogs. I don't even venture over to the likes of HotAir or WND anymore. I can only imagine how disgusting it is over there.

Do these fools know what a real blood libel is? More attempts to make themselves in to the victims of the tragedy. Simply pathetic and they know it.

They know exactly what it means, and it means what the person they cited says it means. That's how the echo chamber works. ALL arguments are appeals to anonymous authority, which are in turn, appeals to another anonymous authority.

The only facts that matter any more are whether an assertion was made that one could cite. The actual truth or falsehood of the assertion are irrelevant. Conservapedia doesn't exist in a vacuum, there is a culture of disregard and disdain for academic processes of sourcing on the right.

Anti-intellectualism isn't just dumb people being dumb. It's an attack on reason.

re: #23 Charles

By the way, a story I read somewhere said that another man heard the shots and ran over to help -- and he was armed. When he got there he saw someone holding a gun and nearly shot him.

The man with the gun was one of the victims, who had grabbed the gun away from Loughner. When the armed bystander drew down on him, other people yelled, "No, no! He's not the shooter!"

So for those of you who like to think that more guns would have done something to prevent the massacre -- in fact, there were plenty of guns around, and an innocent victim was very nearly killed because of them.

Stark demonstration of the problem with a deluge of firearms among untrained people. Even trained police and soldiers make mistakes in the heat of the moment.

The last thing I want is "someone should have run in and shot him" type of behavior. Will take exactly 2 seconds before some buckethead trying to be a hero shoots the wrong person.

And here's the CEO of AIG, Robert H. Benmosche:

Benmosche joined the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in 1995. In 1998 he rose to the rank of CEO, a position in which he served until retiring in 2006.[3] During his tenure, he oversaw MetLife's successful transition from mutual company to publicly traded firm. After being a member of the board of Credit Suisse AG for seven years, Benmosche resigned in August 2009.

In mid-2009, Benmosche was appointed CEO of American International Group. He assumed that role on August 10 of that year. During his first meeting with employees, Benmosche stated that Congress was composed of "crazies," that he would not cooperate if asked to testify before Congress, and that New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who had investigated AIG, "doesn't deserve to be in government." He later asked for a personal private jet and said that he might quit over government-imposed pay restrictions.

Well my thanks to ya for stepping up in a tough job.

You may be able to access the training guidelines/texts from CCW states like AZ, Tx and Florida. Google failed me.
I got the clear impression they have procedures that reduce the chance of a tragic error, while maintaining officer safety. A Tucson officer told me how they routinely disarm everyone during traffic stops. They will take the gun and unload it. Then run your ID for the usual, and proceed to give you your ticket or warning or whatever. Then they give you your unloaded gun back. I was told certain bikers would carry the percussion cap black powder revolvers just to screw with the procedure, and annoy the cops. Pricks.

You probably know this, but state by state, the rules vary on posting a no gun sign. In some states, a person licensed for concealed carry doesn't have to follow a sign in a posted business as long as the weapon remains concealed.

Cuba restrictions eased

President Obama directed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner, and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to:

- ease travel to Cuba for religious groups and students;

- allows more remittances – up to $2,000 a year -- to flow to non-Communists in Cuba; and

- allow all US international airports to offer charter flights.

The GOP is not happy, but

Francisco "Pepe" Hernandez, President of Cuban American National Foundation, applauded the move, saying the changes “will help to break the chains of dependency that the Castro regime has traditionally used to oppress those inside Cuba….These measures do not represent a concession to the Castro regime, but rather form part of a continuing series of unilateral measures that the US is taking which demonstrate a concern for the well-being of ordinary folks.”

'Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf'

In the year of 3131, the goats live a prosperous life in the green grassland. There are towns, schools, supermarkets and beauty parlors in the grassland. All the sheep lived a happily life.

However, in the opposite forest, Big big wolf with his wife is coveting the flocks of fat goat. Seeing the flock of goats, red wolf knew that it is absolutely right for his husband to take her away from the pack of wolves. But the point is that when his husband goes to the grassland and catches the fat goats to feast her.

Only when Big big wolf appeared in the front of the stone bridge railing did all the young goats saw with their own eyes the ugly appearance recorded in the book.

Big big wolf can’t span the iron railing. The village head Slow goat arranged the smartest Pleasant goat to guard the bridge, preventing the Big big wolf play any tricks.

Though trying many means, the Big big goat suffered a lot with bruises all over the body. He limped back to home defeated. His wife would never comfort him but to give him a good scolding.

And from the WSJ which they also ignored:

Heat Wave Stokes Jump in Corn

Corn futures surged as a heat wave threatened Argentina, raising expectations U.S. government forecasters will cut their crop estimate for the South American country later this week.

Forecasts for little rain and temperatures above 90 degrees reignited concerns over the corn crop in Argentina, the world's second-largest exporter of the grain. Poor growing conditions have caused corn prices to surge to 29-month highs in recent weeks as expectations for crop losses in Argentina come at a time when global supplies already are tight.

Corn for March delivery settled up 12 cents, or 2%, at $6.07 a bushel at the Chicago Board of Trade.

"This looks hotter than anything that has been seen so far in this growing season," private-forecasting firm Freese-Notis said.

Further fuel for higher prices could come Wednesday when the U.S. Department of Agriculture releases its latest crop forecast, which is expected to include a cut in the 25-million metric ton estimate for the Argentina harvest made in December. Many private analysts have already cut their forecasts due to persistent dryness during a critical period of corn crop development called pollination...

Argentina heads for sweltering New Year, power cuts & drought

BUENOS AIRES, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Argentina is heading for a sweltering New Year's Eve as a heat wave sweeps through the Latin American country, raising concerns about electricity and water shortages and future yield of key cash crops.

Heavy draws on the national power grid caused cuts and prolonged interruptions in electricity supplies as the capital braced for the opposite of challenges faced by countries in the north of the western hemisphere, buffeted by cold spells and snow drifts.

Officials said they couldn't predict how long the heat wave would last.

Residents reported a run on fuels as families, factories and shops scrambled to maintain electricity supplies with backup power generation systems.

Angry inhabitants of metropolitan Buenos Aires, home to about one-quarter of Argentina's 40 million people, demanded urgent relief measures but public services were already stretched to the limit as the scorching heat swept through the capital and environs...

Argentina heads for sweltering New Year, power cuts & drought

I've spent part of the day reading up on what's going on with crops because of extremer weather patterns. It's damn depressing really. If it was only a one off here and there it wouldn't be a big deal, funky weather has always happened in one place or another. Problem is it's not just one place. It's all over.

Not good.

Interesting. I guess that means we just might have to ban all speech or forms of communication that might cause the unstable to do horrible deeds.

Friends, this is NOT a new problem!

Terrible violence was caused by words in the past. And it was just AWFUL!!

For those with very strong stomachs point your favorite browser to your favorite search engine and look for:

"Comic Books and Juvenile Delinquency (1955)"

For more than half a century our politicians have been aware of this terrible situation and have refused to to anything at all.

Personally, I am shamed to admit that when I was an impressionable young teen, I read comic books. And now look where I lurk!

Ack! Class of 2004.
Wanker.

I Love Church's Chicken

That's pretty darned good! The kid has a nice voice, with echoes of vintage Stevie Wonder. Maybe he should drop the rap part and concentrate on the singing.

He got shot. Naturally he's pissed and looking for explanations. But I'll go with our president on this one. There isn't any nice pat explanation. Especially, not a political one linking this attack to TP rhetoric.

Our mental illness laws give a madman enough leeway, unless he repeatedly makes explicit, spelled out, violent threats, that he can go ahead with his schemes and not be much inquired into.

But we cannot easily change those laws. There are too many people with mental illnesses that do not represent the kind of dire threat the extreme cases pose, and we'd rather deal with this much larger population gently.

Fact is, we'd rather kind of ignore it. From time to time, then, and it seems to be a matter of once every few years, there'll be an attack out of the blue by somebody who, with other laws, would have been in a hospital, or at a minimum, under some kind of high tech restraining order, wearing a GPS device that can't be removed without, if only by its silence, triggering an alarm, and forbidden to approach any "target rich" environment.

# 127 - "Your nic, I do not think it means what you think it means"

“The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.” - Adventures in Wonderland

Actually, pragmatist is an old nickname I acquired with my (over)use of pre-processor statements in various computer languages. Most notably "C". ( The answer is left as an exercise for the student. ) I guess the younger types, with their short attention spans, were - ARE? - easily confused. ["Hey kid, if you can't grok that code, try patching the O/S in something easier like BASIC!"]

# 129 - Video Games? How about just TELEVISION ... all those violent images from wars and suchlike all over the world. And War movies. How about "Westerns"? So much violence there too. Lots of us white folks going out and shooting Native 'Amurrikans' because of them movies!

# 140 - "Get off of my ranch!"

# 309 - So sorry. Not sure what is meant by "Class of 2004". Is it a reference to something within the popular culture? Been a bit busy here. Just one more feature and my Lotus 1-2-3 killer replacement will be ready to ship! And ... oh boy ... won't those IBM and Compaq Personal Computers be popular then! Just think! A super fast 4.77 MHz processor,
256K of memory and 160K floppy disks right on our desks!

re: #91 Rightwingconspirator

Perspective question. Is Arizona all that more commonly armed than in Israel? Those civilians that carry there have to watch out for all these same problems. I suspect they train more, but I do not know. Any current or former residents want to chime in?

Late to the post, but as both a former and current resident (working from Israel at the moment), I can tell you that with the exception of IDF forces which carry weapons, the majority of Israeli citizens CANNOT obtain a gun license, unless residing in 'risk' areas.
And even those among the soldiers are a relative minority, as it's usually only combat soldiers, those that serve in sensitive positions and those in basic training (mostly M16, Galil and Uzi assault weapons for both men and women). That said, EVERY solder, without exception, receives loads of firearms and gun control lessons during basic training.
Friendly fire is considered a very serious issue and no one in the political/military arena (as far as I know) has ever viewed the notion of 'everyone having firearms' to be a good idea ...

With all due respect to Mr Fuller, it's just too early to say what motivated Loughner. Presumably there will be some sort of psychological report in the fullness of time.

I have a hunch that any negative influences that may have worsened his already-disturbed mental state may turn out to be of the 911-truther/delusional-conspiracy-nut variety rather than the frothing-tea-party-wingnut kind, and there is already ample evidence to suggest this.

Just because he is a veteran does not mean that he is correct. Cindy Sheehan and supporters used to play the mother card as does the anti-vaccination lady. One friend said he was not political and never watched the news. Here are some good links:

Those are links, but I would not call them good links. The one from Mother Jones interviews a guy who hadn't seen Loughner in months, and who got this wrong:

Tierney never saw Loughner smoke marijuana again, and he was surprised at media reports that Loughner had been rejected from the military in 2009 for failing a drug test: "He was clean, clean. I saw him after that continuously. He would not do it."

The article from TNR gets this wrong:

When news of the incident first broke, bloggers began to speculate that this was a Tea Party-related incident. No evidence of that emerged.

Evidence of that has emerged. Ignoring it doesn't make it un-emerge.

If you find another link that might be good, post it! I know this is important to you, because you haven't posted here since 2008, as far as I can tell.
