Shooting Victim Who Blamed Palin, Beck, and Angle Threatens Tea Party Leader

US News • Views: 49,579

Eric Fuller, the Arizona shooting victim who came out yesterday and said he blamed Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, and Sharron Angle for the crime, will be charged with disorderly conduct after allegedly making a death threat against Tucson Tea Party spokesman Trent Humphries.

Yikes. Arizona’s turning into the Wild West.

Not really sure what to say. Sad times.

I'm glad he was arrested. You shouldn't be able to make threats without impunity.

It doesn't take anything away from the cowardice and foolishness of those who incite violence without directly making threats.

As I said in the thread about Fuller yesterday, talking about Palin and the TPGOP and now it applies to Fuller himself:

Words have consequences.

Fuller definitely has a high opinion of himself.

I use extraordinary persuasive charisma to interest blase, apathetic, oblivious and at times hostile voters to listen to the voice of justice and consanguinity. My experiences encountering public figures and many affluent travelers in person has led me to believe that we all are to blame for George W. Bush.

This is no surprise. Political fringe dwellers of all kinds tend to hang around political events. An act of barbaric violence can turn any one of them into a martyr. The Soviets did it with Congressman and John Birch Society president Larry McDonald (D-GA) when they killed him and 268 others on board KAL 007 in 1983.

He needs help. Anger management at the least. PTSD or stress evaluation. I'm no expert. I hope he gets the help he needs. He should be watched carefully to get through this. I can't imagine my anger if I got shot like that. Or if my wife did and died. I'd need expert help too.

Mr. Fuller IS the Magical Balance Fairy.

And now that he's done this, those who've been harping on 'but both sides do it' will consider themselves completely vindicated.

I realize he was shot, and he must be utterly freaked out, but DAMN. Way to go, schmuck.

I think Mr. Fuller needs help. He was shot during a horrible event. Also the Tucson Tea Party, it may have been this Trent guy, came out and said Giffords getting shot was her own fault! Now making threats is not OK but I think this man is traumatize. The Tea Party also needs to STFU and not egg people on with remarks blaming a victim. I hope all the victims of this awful shooting get psychiatric help. They are going to need it.

From that link:

About Me:

Non-deep pocket with a lot of heart. Began life as a computer operator, military service leading to non-physical disability, unable to resume career, left main stream and lived in small towns for a decade studying library books and piano, moved into Tucson in 1994 and worked as a Chauffeur for most of 10 years, presented state-wide initiatives at libraries, worked elections, in ’09 worked at the Census Bureau as a field rep and a clerk. Non drinker for one year, non smoker for 40 years.

"Non-physical disability", what does that leave? Perhaps he has an old case of PTSD, rather than a recent one.

Again, I am not defending Mr Fuller. It was a totally boneheaded move. But I can envision a scenario that would drive him to this.

Imagine if he volunteered for Ms Gifford's campaign and had received death threats over it. Then he actually gets shot. If something like that happened it would not be surprising if he just lost it.

It's as though he speaks completely oblivious to the national debate going on, on whether or not deep-seated political beliefs can cause people to do crazy things. This guy is definitely a loon, he lacks awareness of what goes on beyond him. Even Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck made the connection that pictures toting firearms, or cross-hairs could be misinterpreted and went ahead and deleted them (whether or not they should have been up there in the first place is still a great question) but this guy, to do this in this heated political climate? Something is severely wrong with his mental decision making abilities.

As the person who first posted the story about Fuller yesterday and said he sounded so thoughtful, I want to say that nothing, not even being shot at by a lunatic, excuses making death threats against people whose responsibility is at best some distance removed from what happened. Or any death threats at all, actually.

All these guys (and gals) mouthing off about shooting and killing their opponents reminds me of my little brother, when he was about five, yelling about how he was going to burn down a restaurant that had served him a bad hamburger. He grew out of that sort of reaction. Evidently Mr. Fuller, like so many other Americans, unfortunately has not.

What is obvious to you, me and most everyone else means little when it comes to mental illness.

If he had displayed symptoms of typhus, cholera, TB or any other communicable disease we would employ mechanisms already in place to quarantine the individual and keep him away from the general population.

Mental illness is different in that no matter how obviously disturbed or dysfunctional the individual is, he or she cannot be quarantined if he or she questions the diagnosis. The problem is decades old and is exacerbated by some cultural shifts (think Cho at VA Tech).

The same applies to serious behavior issues. To remove an obviously disruptive/dangerous student from a classroom can be a production if the parents aren't cooperative, etc.

And that's only a part of the problem.

Does this fall under the whole "toning down of the rhetoric" thing that you all have been squealing about for the last week?

Not at all. The very first thing I stated was that Fuller's outburst was inexcusable. I just want to know the full context of the entire confrontation.

Maybe you all should accuse her of being complicit in a mass murder a little less frequently.

Nah. . .that would make sense. Can't have that, can we?

Poor Sarah...me me me me me...always about her.

And I will say it again, Palin could have done SO MUCH to chance the rhetoric by just saying "My Bad. That was a stupid to put crosshairs on a map. I apologize and will make it my mission to raise the level of political rhetoric in this country to one of civil discourse. We all could use lessons in how to not demonize the opposition."

But no, Palin just did what she always does, made herself the victim.

Gonz

What do you expect to find here? This site caters to a more liberal crowd in the same way Hoft, et al, cater to a more conservative crowd.

In the same way Hoft and others have their over the top commenters, there will inevitably be the same here.

That said, there is a difference between LGF and other sites.

Here, if you make an argument rationally and deliberately you will always find a willing audience. Yes, there will be some knee jerk responses (and sometimes lots of that) but overall, make a good argument and you'll find vigorous and worthy debate. The same cannot be said for very many right wing pundits.

This site is primarily a community and less of an oversized soapbox. People here argue, have fun, get angry and manage to work things out without letting things get personal for too long.

By all means, make your argument, don't make it personal and don't take things too personally.

Lastly, people here have been known to change their minds, irrespective of ideological tilt. That doesn't happen anywhere else near as often as it does here.

That's ridiculous. The rhetoric we're talking about has been a major topic of discussion on this blog for a couple of years, and people have repeatedly expressed their fear that it would boil over into violence.

There has been a constant refrain from many on the right of the theme of revolution, of armed resistance against tyranny, of second amendment solutions-- and there has been no repudiation of them from the GOP leadership.

What's more, as Killgore has pointed out, the dehumanizing and apocalyptic rhetoric is even more dangerous than the outright violent rhetoric. "2nd amendment solutions" is bad as hell, a direct threat of violence, but it's even worse to say that Obama is working to bring the United States down. That is an accusation that means that any patriotic American should be willing to give their lives to stop him.

Do you understand?

That's ridiculous. The rhetoric we're talking about has been a major topic of discussion on this blog for a couple of years, and people have repeatedly expressed their fear that it would boil over into violence.

Everyone on this thread has condemned Mr. Fuller's actions.

You're raging against people in your imagination, which may be fun, but is hardly useful.

TUCSON, Ariz. — A victim from the Tucson mass shooting was taken into custody Saturday after allegedly threatening a Tea Party spokesman during the taping of an ABC-TV town hall event hosted by Christianne Amanpour.

The Pima County Sheriff's Office said J. Eric Fuller, 63, was involuntarily committed to an undisclosed medical facility, NBC News reported.

Good comment from 'grumpy old man' in the Guardian thread:

The kind of narrative that the Tea Party trades in is shot through with ignorance, hatred, bigotry, and the underlying threat of violence towards those they don't agree with, particularly if the latter are in government.

Now they have the gall to claim that they are misunderstood victims for whom we should feel pity.

I would be more inclined to sympathise with the Tea Party if they were to renounce the use of vitriolic rhetoric and accept the principle that in a democracy, you occasionally get governments you don't like.

Gee, I know I'm new around here and don't understand all the dynamics, but let's try this again with another quote because reacting to first run news minutes after it is released doesn't always reflect reality.

There could be more to this than simply Arizona turning into the wild west.

KGUN reported that Fuller took exception to comments by Republican state Rep. Terri Proud and Tucson Tea Party spokesman Trent Humphries.

Fuller reportedly took a picture of Humphries and said, “You’re dead.”

Some media reports said Fuller kept booing and making other remarks before deputies escorted him from the church.

If this was a simple threat, then jail it would be. If the report that the police took him to a medical facility is true, then why? Was he injured? He sounded like he was acting more erratically then threatening.

Man wounded in Tucson shooting arrested at meeting

Read more: http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2011/01/15/20110115gabrielle-giffords-arizona-shooting-tucson-forum.html#ixzz1B9iS0rNt

A victim in the mass shooting north of Tucson attending a special town hall today was arrested after his outburst at another man who spoke in support of gun ownership.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department said it arrested Eric Fuller, 63, who was wounded in the knee a week ago in the shooting rampage that killed six and wounded 13. He was being held Saturday for alleged threats of intimidation and disorderly conduct and will undergo a mental-health evaluation.

The incident took place near the end of a taping of ABC's weekly "Town Hall" with news anchor Christiane Amanpour.

The program, which airs Sunday and is called "Tragedy in Tucson: An American Conversation Continued," reunited many victims, initial responders to the shooting scene and witnesses. Open to the public, the forum at a Catholic church was designed to promote conversation and healing a week after the grocery-store shooting.

Most of the of taping was calm and at times emotional as witnesses recounted the events in which a gunman opened fire at a local Safeway, killing six and wounding 13, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Toward the end of the taping, Amanpour brought up the issues of gun safety and mental health. As one member of the audience stood up and expressed his support for gun ownership, Fuller, seated near the front in an area reserved for victims and special guests, appeared increasingly frustrated and agitated.

Fuller then swiveled in his chair, raised his camera and took a photo of the pro-gun speaker, muttering, "You're dead," according to Joel Tranter, who was sitting behind him.

"I told him, 'You need to be respectful. You need to calm down,'" Tranter said. "He said, 'What'd you do, vote for this guy?'"

As police officers approached to escort Fuller outside, he turned and shouted at the audience: "You whores!"
The rest of the taping continued without incident and wrapped up about five minutes later.

Outside, Fuller was arrested for making threats, said Capt. Byron Gwaltney of the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
"He's currently in our custody and we're in the process of dealing with that investigation to see what charges will be made," Gwaltney said.

Fuller's actions could be a response to the trauma he suffered a week ago, said Dr. Laura Nelson, deputy director for the behavioral health sciences division at the Arizona Department of Health.

"Grief after what happened here in Tucson last week is a completely normal reaction, and ... anger is a very common symptom of grief," said Nelson, who had been invited to speak at the forum. "I hope that he'll get the help that he needs to get through this very difficult time."

Fuller, who works as a signature collector for political initiatives, was about 10 to 15 feet away from Giffords, talking to her volunteers, when the shots erupted on Jan. 8. He said earlier this week he was hit by a bullet when he dove to the ground to play dead. He decided that because he didn't have any medical training to help others, he walked to his car and drove himself to the nearest hospital.

About 100 people attended the taping, which took place at St. Odilia Church less than a mile from the Safeway where the shooting occurred.

Among the guests were Patricia Maisch, Bill Badger and Daniel Hernandez, who were attending Giffords' event when the shooting occurred; Bill Hileman, husband of Susan Hileman, who was wounded in the rampage; U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Floirda, a friend of Giffords', and Rick Kastigar of the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

Gee, I know I'm new around here and don't understand all the dynamics, but let's try this again with another quote because reacting to first run news minutes after it is released doesn't always reflect reality.

There could be more to this than simply Arizona turning into the wild west.

If this was a simple threat, then jail it would be. If the report that the police took him to a medical facility is true, then why? Was he injured? He sounded like he was acting more erratically then threatening.

Sorry for the double post here, but hey, this could change the entire story, no?

It looks like Fuller was committed to a mental facility, according to news reports coming out now:

[Link: www.wsoctv.com...]

TUCSON, Ariz. -- One of the victims from the Tucson shootings has been arrested and involuntarily committed to a mental health facility, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Office.

Eric Fuller was arrested Saturday after authorities said he shouted "You're dead" to Tea Party spokesman Trent Humphries, KPHO-TV in Phoenix reported.

Humphries was speaking at a town hall event to discuss the shootings that happened a week earlier outside a Tucson Safeway store.

Pima County sheriff's spokesman Jason Ogan said that Fuller has been charged with threats and intimidation and also will be charged with disorderly conduct.

In addition, Ogan said Fuller has been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility.

Have you ever tried growing quinoa? I'm doing some experimentation with it this year to see how well it grows in my area. A few other people are going to try a few plants in their gardens. I figured if anyone here was interested in trying, even if it was just a few plants, it would be great to have some info from other regions as well.

I'd even be willing to send out the seed.

Very interesting. Since I've never even heard of it I had to google it. Quinoa. Sounds very interesting and just the kind of thing I'm becoming more interested in. Obscure, forgotten but reliable indigenous American crops.
I do have some space that I can use to experiment with but I'm not sure how well it will do here in Oregon but it does have a relatively short growing season so it might work.
I notice that this common brand is available in most grocery stores and as long as it isn't toasted I can probably sprout from store bought seeds.
I've added it to my list and I'll give it a try.

I see it differently than that. All the first accounts simply related he was arrested and made a threat. To put someone under medical evaluation says that there was cause to think he was not of his right mind.

Now, think about how many sites have posted the first news, and condemned him as a hypocrite liberal.

Think about the relationship to the Loughner case where no one did anything to help a sick kid or went rallying to the cause of what he believed in, be it left or right.

The internet is a marvelous thing with news tweeted as it happens. But sometimes a little restraint until all the info comes in might do us all a bit of good so we don't have to change our position.

Something that should have been done with Loughner--not indefinitely, but I think the real debate that we should have about this shooting is the real problem of how we deal with the mentally ill. A couple weeks of forced confinement for Loughner under medical attention could have helped society by identifying/quantifying what kind of risk this guy was to the rest of us. It maybe even could have put Loughner in touch with the right resources to deal with his illness.

Instead, we are having all these debates about vitriol and over the top rhetoric.

re: #242 BryanS

That's a false dichotomy, though. We don't have to choose between having a debate about mental health and one about vitriol. Both are important.

The problem of mental health is an eternal and thorny one. It comes down to three basic problems:

1. Unlike physical illness, the seriously mentally ill usually resist treatment.
2. The mentally ill often intentionall mask the seriousness of their problems when 'threatened' with confinement.
3. There is a lack of public funds to fully address all the mentally ill we have in this country.

I would be happy if one of the things that came out of this was an emphasis on providing mental health for veterans.

But that doesn't in any way diminish the importance of stopping the violent rhetoric. Indeed, I don't see them as fully separate issues. A lot of the paranoid, over-the-top, conspiratorial vitriol that Beck spews is only a shade more sane than what Loughner has said.

It's not a false dichotomy. There is not one single shred of evidence that political vitriol was a reason for Loughner's decision to go on a shooting spree--if there is, then cite some evidence of direct influence of political rhetoric. There is a lot of evidence that he was a paranoid, delusional, and seriously disturbed man who was unable to deal with his mental issues.

On your three bullet points, I couldn't agree more on the serious challenge we have trying to deal with the mentally ill. They are very often among the permanent homeless class. That issue I think is clearly germane to the shooting.

All the rest about political vitriol is just huff and puff. Sure, it is real, and may be a problem that needs to be dealt with. But why in the context of this shooting? Loughner played video games with his friends as reported in early background stories about him...why not have a debate about video game violence? Because there is nothing to suggest video games made him do this.

Well to give you an idea of what is possible, if it does grow okay where you are I was reading a blog where a woman tried a few plants. She ended up getting about 1 and 1/2 pounds from 5 plants. That's quite a bit.

The drawback is while you don't have to thresh it like other true grains you have to wash it really well. It has saponins on the outside which make it really bitter. However the bitterness apparently keeps birds from eating the seeds which can be a problem with small scale grain growing. I planted some amaranth one year and barely got any seed because of the birds. I think it's a pretty good trade-off.

Some of his teachers and classmates were afraid he would come back to the school and shoot the place up. What I wonder is why his previous behavior wasn't cause to take more action before he went on his rampage.

While it may seem crazy to a layperson, he may actually be sane. That's the thing about us, we're capable of very great and very horrible things while not being whacked out.

Ugh.

The guy is probably traumatized, and not dealing with his experience all that well. They should make him see a psychiatrist right now, before he makes good on those threats.

Well, reports that he has been involuntarily committed if true will ensure he sees a psychiatrist. Maybe a week or two time out away from the press and brouhaha over this will give him some space to digest all he has been through.

Action by whom? That's the tough question and probably doesn't have an answer with general applicability. When does a person who is progressing toward mental illness become someone that you or me need to do something about? I'm not sure that I'd ever be inclined to report a college student who walks in circles on the playground to the authorities, which is one of the reported signs that Loughner exhibited. When does weird become reportable?

And even if you did report it, if they're not shown to be an imminent danger to themself or to another, reporting it won't result in any action AFAIK.

I'm looking at it because it can be used as rice and I can grow it myself...unlike rice.

It also is a complete protein which is rare in the plant world.

It also makes good chicken feed and with grain prices going up I'm looking at alternatives that I can grow myself.

as a vegetarian it's a great source of protein for me. i eat it in dishes that usually would be prepared with rice and use it in veggie burgers.

There's a huge difference between "think he is crazy" and actually crazy enough to do something about legally.

Otherwise I do believe that Glenn Beck should be in a rubber room rather than on Fox.

I'll wait for a psychiatrist to sit down with Loughner for a few hours/weeks and see what he has to say before I start to care about what people have to say on his mental health issues, anything else is just jumping to conclusions.

Like I said, I'll wait for a

See, if we deal with this mental health issue, maybe we could resolve this Glen Beck problem all in one fell swoop, eh?

True--and that should be an issue I think we debate. Why was there no legal tool with which to respond to the likes of Loughner? What kind of tools can or should we give police to be able to handle this in the future. It just feels like there were so many warning signs, and there was nothing we could do about it.

Good question, and I think defining when action can be taken--committing someone, etc--is hard to define without opening it up to abuse. His classmates and teachers were afraid of him, and before this event occurred, some of his teachers and classmates expressed a fear that the guy would come back to their school and shoot up the place.

Well, it's thorny for good reason. As Obdicut and i mentioned on another thread, mental illness of itself (i.e. absent substance abuse or other environmental triggers) is actually not a very significant predictor of violent behavior.

In other words, if you are the victim of an attack by a stranger, the stranger is not significantly more likely to be mentally ill than the population would otherwise suggest.

So while mental illness can indeed be the root cause of a violent act, it is currently almost impossible to predict which mentally ill folks (who haven't yet shown overt violent behavior or are taking drugs) present an actual danger.

That's the rub...or at least, that's one of the rubs.

My argument is that there needs to be a "gun check" station around political events where important people are hosting events. None of this 1000 ft saftey radius, I mean guys with metal detectors and nobody gets in without giving up all firearms to a gun safety locker.

That or we could insist that all important need to do events like this from inside bullet proof glass cubes which kind of defeats the whole point of seeming approachable.

Probably the gun check thing would be prudent. About the only thing that can be done short of bullet proof glass--and that would seem downright un-American to keep our politicians so isolated from the public.

Yeah to me the gun check things seems reasonable and theoretically doable, it probably wouldn't be cheep and would require the creation of effectively a larger but slightly less elite version of the secret service to make sure that each congressman/senator has guards ready at all times.

Some kind of evaluation would seem prudent, because you are right in the fact that mental illness alone is not a predictor of violence. If Loughner had been evaluated, maybe that evaluation could have found out whether he was prone to violence.

I'm not crazy about the 'gun check' idea, but it is a viable idea. The '1000 feet' idea is insane. By its logic, someone could get in trouble by walking down a street several blocks away from an event while carrying a legally concealed weapon.

When people get paid to put together words and images in advertising, they know it works to influence people behavior.

Advertising works. Psychologists know it works. There are huge industries that get paid to put together words and images.

Advertising works. Psychologists know it works. There are huge industries that get paid to put together words and images.

Dont you think it is interesting that this man who was arrested was also shot at at Kent State?

Excuse me, but I didn't disagree with you in the first place.

You caught me in a silly mood is all.

For context I think it might be important to point out that Humphries has been going around claiming that he is in fact on of the victims of the tragic shooting and seeming to blame Giffords, in part, for what happened. I would expect that stuff like that might make someone who was actually shot a little angry.

And maybe if we had a DRAFT, there would be some bipartisanship amongst the citizens instead of these fat fucks sitting around spewing hate all day and night.
The TeaParty is the Oil industry and the Gun Industry.
That is all they are.

A draft is a very bad idea. It is the fact that our army is all volunteers that allows it to be so effective. A conscript army would have to be much larger and would cost far more.

re: #263 Jadespring

Well to give you an idea of what is possible, if it does grow okay where you are I was reading a blog where a woman tried a few plants. She ended up getting about 1 and 1/2 pounds from 5 plants. That's quite a bit.

The drawback is while you don't have to thresh it like other true grains you have to wash it really well. It has saponins on the outside which make it really bitter. However the bitterness apparently keeps birds from eating the seeds which can be a problem with small scale grain growing. I planted some amaranth one year and barely got any seed because of the birds. I think it's a pretty good trade-off.

I can't thank you you enough for the tip. I'm very excited about trying this.
Much thanks.

eh...a few of us have to stand still so that when most of the party wakes up, looks around and says "wait, where the hell are we", we can wave and say "over here, losers".

Fair enough, I just worry that Frum ends up helping legitimize the current GOP by being someone they can point to and say "see we're not all crazy"

I mean its possible for one to be "on the right" without being part of the GOP....

S0mebody went after a boar with a knife?

quite a few of them do. apparently, half of the thrill is that it's illegal.

somehow, Cali views the killing of a wild pig or boar with a knife as cruel.

shooting one is not cruel...even if you don't hit it squarely and have to chase it, wounded and in pain, for several miles.

riddle me that.

Fuller considers himself a political operative. His business card reads in part:

"Expediting Initiatives since 2006"
"J. Eric Fuller"
"Political Circulator."

I think it is possible that he is already political and already biased against conservatives before the shooting.

He made the threat right after it was suggested that it would be better not to talk about gun control until after the funerals of the victims.

it was inevitable that the conversation would eventually turn to politics. It did, toward the end, with Amanpour leading a discussion on a very touchy but obvious topic: gun control.

That's where the atmosphere turned tense. When Tucson Tea Party founder Trent Humphries rose to suggest that any conversation about gun control should be put off until after the funerals for all the victims, witnesses say Fuller became agitated. Two told KGUN9 News that finally, Fuller took a picture of Humphries, and said, "You're dead."

Well technically the law says you have to get approval to shoot them here but since it's rural farm country it has it's own DADT sort of unofficial policy.
Coyote livestock kills claims have gone up 300% in the last few years so it's becoming a major issue in the area.

Part of the problem is some have some wolf genetics (coywolves) as well as some possible domestic dog genes (coydogs) so their behavior is less predictable. Plus they're just generally getting more bold and used to being around humans. Last summer one came right into the yard, in the middle of the day and snatched up a chicken while I was standing about 40ft away from it.

There wouldn't be any real concern about wolves here which is fortunate. There aren't actually wolves in the area. The MNR figure that the wolf genes have spread into the area from further north.

Its one of those inverse logic deals. Everyone knows a gun is dangerous, so they're more careful. Slap "Less Lethal" on it and people will be more likely to use it, even in situations where its not called for and more people will get injured.

HAMAS WITCH HUNT, 150 ARRESTED IN 2010

Hamas leaders are committed to a systematic ''witch hunt'' and 150 women were arrested in 2010 in Gaza for having made recourse to witchcraft of some sort. During a symposium held in recent days in Gaza, it was stated that in the eyes of Hamas, the activities of these women represent a real social danger, also because they risk ''breaking up families,'' causing divorce and frittering away of money. Sometimes their activities also have criminal repercussions. One awareness campaign against ''the witches'' was launched using large posters in mosques, universities and public offices frequented by women.

The issue emerged again in August last year when a 62-year-old woman, Jabryieh Abu Ghanas, considered to be active in the field of ''witchcraft'' and the production of ''voodoo dolls'', was shot dead in a street in the centre of Gaza. This murder caused great alarm in the Palestinian human rights defence organisations al-Mezan and Pchr-Gaza. It seems however that for now Hamas are not using an iron hand in regard to the women suspected of witchcraft. They are forced to sign an undertaking to abandon their practices, consider incompatible with Islam, for good. It seems this measure has been sufficient and to date there is no news of any ''witch'' being imprisoned by Hamas.

Here's some video taken from Gaza...

Essentially he could have made the same argument with slavery. Would like to see him try that. In consideration of all of the recent neo-Confederates though there's no doubt that he, they, are thinking about it. If it was up to them they would have said something akin to "congress had no Constitutional right to outlaw slavery and the outlawing of slavery should have been left to the sates."

Can you point me to the thread? I didn't see it.

re: #747 Charles

That's a terrible column, full of factual errors and stupid counter-intuitive nonsense. Charles Blow has previously called out the right for their rhetoric, but suddenly he sees nothing wrong with it. He's an ass.

There is nothing contradictory about calling out the right for extreme rhetoric, while also expressing skepticism that it was a major contributing cause of the Tucson shooting. Violent rhetoric is still dangerous, even if it wasn't a major cause of this particular incident. It's pretty clear that Mr Blow does not "see nothing wrong" with right-wing rhetoric.

Regarding factual errors, I assume you mean his reporting of the opinion poll results that show X% of Americans believe violent rhetoric was the cause of the shooting. Those poll results are meaningless anyway, you can't crowd-source a psychiatric diagnosis.

There is still no specific evidence that right-wing rhetoric influenced Loughner at all. All the "evidence" has been put forward so far is:

- Opinion polls about how many people think it did (meaningless).
- Mountains of examples of violent rhetoric from the Tea Party, which should certainly be condemned regardless, but it hasn't been established that Loughner actually read or was influenced by any of it.
- The opinions of police officers and victims of the shooting, without any specific reference to anything that Loughner is known to have read or watched, or opinions he is known to have voiced.

Seriously, people should be a little more skeptical about this and go and read Loughner's internet postings and watch his YouTube videos if they want to get an idea of what was going on in his mind, instead of just signing on to the "right-wing terrorist" narrative. There is no way anyone who is being honest with themselves can continue to believe it. He was a delusional conspiracy theorist obsessed with NASA conspiracy theories, date systems and lucid dreaming.

re: #275 wrenchwench

Fixed that for both of you.

Good grief. Suggesting on TV that somebody gives every indication of mental illness is not medical malpractice. In the first place, it's not any medical action of any sort. It's a statement of opinion.

In the second place, you have no reason or grounds for your own opinion that Krauthammer's opinion is incompetent or negligent. Just because he's persona non grata to most posters here doesn't make him wrong about something where he actually knows a lot.

In the third place, this opinion is hardly an outlier, nor is it an outlier among professionals.

And finally, accusations of malpractice ought not be thrown about cavalierly. You didn't expressly indicate you were just funnin.

Your better nature will conclude that yeah, maybe that wasn't quite the thing to say.

No one has heard anything from Loughner about why, although he's been diagnosed by every armchair shrink with a keyboard. LGF is no different there.

Regardless, lots of people have been complaining at the ratcheting up of the rhetoric for a long time now. Since before Joe Wilson's shouting at Obama on the House floor to the birther shouting from the gallery the other week. It's penetrating our society and dropping the level of discourse to barbarianism and it's got to stop.

re: #916 BigPapa

I got the idea because I posted an article by a columnist who was skeptical that Loughner in particular was influenced by Tea Party etc rhetoric, but still condemned extremist rhetoric in general. This received a very negative response, so I assumed that the people disagreeing with it must be of the opinion that he is wrong and that they have some evidence that Loughner WAS INDEED influenced by said rhetoric. If not, what is their disagreement?

918 Kronocide  Sun, Jan 16, 2011 5:11:27am

re: #52 researchok

Won't happen.

Since I have a mental illness that has caused me and others endless grief I'll add my own two cents.

Most people don't believe in mental illness, and they are frightened of it.

To most people mental illness is just a matter of strength and rationality. If you "get back on the horse and start riding you'll be fine." I had a friend say that to me when he visited me in the hospital after a suicide attempt. People simply don't understand and they get angry when a mentally ill person doesn't act the way they're supposed to.

And people are frightened of mental illness because of this. Here in North America we are severe control freaks and people out of control really unnerve us.

It's why our mental health systems are severely underfunded and staffed. As a people we can't see the need for it, and we'd rather it just go away.

The good news is that Eric Fuller is going to get exactly what he deserves. . .some time in a nice little 10x10 cell to think about what he's done.

Hopefully, before too much longer, the Paul Krugmans and Bill Mahers of the world will get the same.

Once again the Tea Partiers make it clear that the only part of the Constitution they support is the Second Amendment. The rest can be burned, along with the 'libruls'.
