Israel Tests on Worm Called Crucial in Iran Nuclear Delay

The Dimona complex in the Negev desert is famous as the heavily guarded heart of Israel’s never-acknowledged nuclear arms program, where neat rows of factories make atomic fuel for the arsenal.

Over the past two years, according to intelligence and military experts familiar with its operations, Dimona has taken on a new, equally secret role — as a critical testing ground in a joint American and Israeli effort to undermine Iran’s efforts to make a bomb of its own.

Behind Dimona’s barbed wire, the experts say, Israel has spun nuclear centrifuges virtually identical to Iran’s at Natanz, where Iranian scientists are struggling to enrich uranium. They say Dimona tested the effectiveness of the Stuxnet computer worm, a destructive program that appears to have wiped out roughly a fifth of Iran’s nuclear centrifuges and helped delay, though not destroy, Tehran’s ability to make its first nuclear arms.

“To check out the worm, you have to know the machines,” said an American expert on nuclear intelligence. “The reason the worm has been effective is that the Israelis tried it out.”

Outstanding!

No, No, I read it wrong, the unit is named after a River and the Lordship came after the unit, so His Lordship chose the name of the River.

‘Khamenei ordered Hariri killing, Hizbullah takeover'

A UN tribunal investigating the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri is expected to accuse Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei of ordering the killing, while Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister said that dialogue is the only way out of the country’s political crisis after a Hizbullah-led coalition toppled his Western-backed government.

According to the US-based Newsmax website, the investigative body will lay out evidence showing that the 2005 murder was committed by Iran’s Quds force, along with Hizbullah.

Prepare for mass amounts of exploding heads in Lebanon.

Yeah, but the guy's website says he's in Sweden, which makes sense--I kept thinking that all those pine trees could not be in Holland. Beautiful film!

On cold weather in Holland--yes, when it's cold, it's REALLY cold. I moved to Amsterdam in December during one of those hard-freeze periods. Despite the warnings of my friends, I had rented a picturesque 17th-century apartment with no central heating. The canal outside my window froze solid and skaters frolicked on it while I huddled close to the little bottle-gas heater. My front was broiling while my back froze.

One day there was a slight thaw and some heavy mist (what they call "motregen") and then overnight another hard freeze. In the morning, all the streets were thickly encased in ice. It was literally impossible to take one single step without falling over. You had to pull yourself along on the front railings of houses, or propel from one parked car to the next. Basically life came to a complete standstill. I remained glued to my little stove...

Though American and Israeli officials refuse to talk publicly about what goes on at Dimona, the operations there, as well as related efforts in the United States, are among the newest and strongest clues suggesting that the virus was designed as an American-Israeli project to sabotage the Iranian program.

Then there was this:

Obama Had Close Ties to Top Saudi Adviser at Early Age

But al-Mansour’s sponsorship of Obama as a prospective Harvard law student is important for another reason beyond his Islamic and anti-American rhetoric and early Black Panther ties.

At the time Percy Sutton, a former lawyer for Malcolm X and a former business partner of al-Mansour, says he was raising money for Obama’s graduate school education, al-Mansour was representing top members of the Saudi Royal family seeking to do business and exert influence in the United States.

In 1989, for example — just one year after Obama entered Harvard Law School — The Los Angeles Times revealed that al-Mansour had been advising Saudi billionaires Abdul Aziz and Khalid al-Ibrahim in their secret effort to acquire a major stake in prime oceanfront property in Marina del Rey, Calif., through “an elaborate network of corporate shells in California, the Caribbean and Europe.”

A lot of old school Obama conspiracy theories.

I found it more interesting that Al Jazeera is reporting on it. So is Fars News Agency and they are already whining about it. I wont post a link to them, something weird popped up when I went to their site.

This result has been expected for some time...and is it any coincidence that the Lebanese government falls shortly before the anticipated release of this report? Lebanon is a cauldron right now, and Iran/Syria are stoking the flames.

I would say that Russia wins that category (Stalin). Which is not to say that we don't have our own violent history because we do. But I still don't see it as exceeding those of Russia, Japan, or Germany in modern history. WWII alone resulted in nearly 60 million deaths and the fault lies squarely with the Axis powers.

Artists always have their opinions though. John Wayne was very opinionated but I still like to watch the knucklehead. Spike Lee makes some pretty good movies. Canada Outlaws Glacier Melting

OTTAWA — In a bold move to protect ice zones and glaciers throughout Canada, opposition parties in the Canadian parliament teamed up to pass a bill that bans any further glacial melting within Canadian territories.

“Glacier melting had just gone too far for our comfort levels,” said Ontario MP Dennis Brison. “Too many things were getting soggy, and this C-56 Bill has staved off the self-destruction of our precious Canadian glaciers.”

The bill, which had been introduced nine months earlier by Manitoba MP Diane Byrne, gives glaciers 60 days to cease any new melting maneuvers once the bill becomes a law. The bill, backed by the NDP and the Bloc Québécois, passed 167-106 on Wednesday night. All the Conservatives present voted against it.

The law, to be enacted on March 1, guarantees “all glaciers on the Canadian National Inventory of Glaciers will cease and desist from all transformations, by heat, from solid to liquid states, including dissolving, fusing, crumpling, and softening.”

Researchers at the Yukon Institute of Glaciology will have the task of monitoring all glaciers and peri-glacial areas to ensure compliance with the new requirements. The bill specifies fines and jail terms for glaciers that contravene the law. Glaciologist Jenna Muskett said she had “long wondered why no one had such foresight earlier. The bill makes sense because the net mass balances trip up the dynamics of tidewater accumulation areas during tide-gauge wastage contributions from non-polar ice caps and ice fields, roughly 0.8%, especially during those hilarious near-concurrent surges. You know how those are. Parliament deserves a big thumbs up for its courage.”

True. But I also have a theory that people will have ridiculous assertions even if they don't tell us. So I see it as most people having a capacity for making ridiculous assertions -- why even I will engage in that from time to time. It's just casual talk anyway since Spike Lee really isn't a historian so it's easily ignored.

WE had a family friend in the pageant in the 70's. I read some big booklet she had and one of the qualifications for entering was that the young woman had to be a virgin.

Maybe. But it is a good format for someone to speak since they would be speaking to those that would be most vulnerable. The majority of people with eating disorders are not intent on winning beauty pageants and as far as I know anorexia and bulemia predates the same. There are many causes of eating disorders. Many times it's based on emotional and behavioral reactions or familial environments.

It's an extreme form of OCD.

Well yes, most of them aren't going to enter beauty contests.

Yet eating disorders are no doubt highly influenced by the self-image comparisons made by young women, against their peers and those whose images are thrust constantly in front of them.

There are plenty of other causes of eating disorders too - such as clinical depression.

Yet I'm overwhelmed by the idea that the winner of a competition based on the most fleeting of characteristics - physical beauty - is going to try and help women who are obsessed (in an unhealthy way) with distorted self-images.

Look at it this way--She's probably well aware of the obsession and may have experienced it herself.

Either that, or she's as full of sh** as most beauty pageant contestants.

Well. Then the cynical side of me would say it's a bit of a publicity stunt. But it's not as simple as taking one young woman and subjecting her to idealized versions of a woman's figure in popular culture and then seeing a resulting behavior of starving oneself, or anorexia or bulimia. The argument here is that it's not a mere visual response but emotional or psychological. There are cultural factors but there are also other factors which are seen as a cause.

This is from the Mayo Clinic:

Sociocultural. Modern Western culture often cultivates and reinforces a desire for thinness. The media are splashed with images of thin models and actors. Success and worth are often equated with being thin. Peer pressure may fuel the desire to be thin, particularly among young girls. However, anorexia and other eating disorders existed centuries ago, suggesting that sociocultural values aren't solely responsible.

re: #172 ClaudeMonet

There is no way that she could be in the physical shape she is unless she was obsessed with her own self-image.

Too many people look at body-builders and just brush it off to genetics. Well, the genes no doubt are important, but for a woman to have as low a body fat percentage as the winner, while at the same time having a significant muscle mass, means she was quite dedicated to the task, over a long period of time.

re: #173 Gus 802

No doubt there is more to it than simply an image being seen. Yet again, what we have here is a woman who will be famous, and rich, and thus get the man (or woman, if she goes that way...) that would be desirable.

The winner's own obsession with beauty and physicality has brought her great success. Now, she has worked hard to maintain a physical ideal that is healthier, no doubt, than the anorexia.

The ultimate lesson of beauty pageants is this: what matters in life is how you look.

But that's true outside of the beauty pageant experience and true of the human animal experience. The good looking people get hired faster and promoted more often. The obese get poor customer service. The tall white guy gets the top management position. This obsession with physicality has been with us since the dawn of man due to the physical nature or the survival of the fittest. This is an evolutionary component of the human experience and it is found everywhere in human cultures around the world and human history. Beauty pageants only imitate what's already there.

New yuk may claim to have invented the pizza, but Chicago perfected it and made it a meal! I think it has to do with the personalities. New yorkers are rude and shallow so the pizza is thin and transparent. Chicago is thoughtful and friendly, so their pizza is some thing that you can take your time to have a conversation while eating it. Nobody can have a conversation with a new yorker, they already think they know everything and are better than anybody else. Gino's East!!!

The art of alcoholic drinks through a microscope...

If you have often wondered what exactly lies within the various concoctions that make our favourite alcoholic drinks, then here is your answer.

These incredible pictures show popular cocktails magnified up to 1,000 times under a high-tech laboratory microscope.

Produced by U.S. firm Bevshots, they reveal the incredible molecules and kaleidoscopic colours created by the different combinations.

Capturing the constituent parts of favourite drinks such as vodka, pina colada and Chablis, the pictures were taken in Florida State University's chemistry department.

'What you can see in the magnified pictures are the crystalised carbohydrates that have become sugars and glucose,' explained Bevshots founder Lester Hutt.

'Each image was created by using a pipette of each particular drink and squeezing a crop onto a slide.

'Then the droplets are allowed to dry out and then once they have the slide is placed under the microscope and a picture taken.'

It usually takes around four weeks for the alcohol to dry out completely in an airtight container - although in some cases it could be three months.

'Some drinks such as vodka do not have as many impurities in as say for example a pina colada cocktail,' said Mr Hutt.

'So when they break down into their constituent parts they can fall apart and not dry out properly. This means that photographing something like vodka can take up to 200 attempts to get properly.

'Cocktails can have fruit and soft drinks in which contain citric acids and complex sugars which dry out well and look great photographed.'

...

Fantastic pictures!

IBM's Watson Computer Wallops 'Jeopardy!' Champs in Trial Run
Our robot overlord isn’t named HAL or SkyNET -- it’s Watson.

After four years of development, IBM on Thursday publicly unveiled a computing system that specializes in analyzing natural human language and answering complex questions. In other words, it’s really good at Jeopardy!.

To test its acumen, the machine was pitted in an exhibition match against the most celebrated human contestants, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, to stunning effect. Watson quickly cleared out the entire first category without the humans getting even a buzz in.

Named after IBM founder Thomas J. Watson, the project is a defining breakthrough in artificial intelligence technology, said John E. Kelly III, senior vice president and director of IBM Research.

“We’ve created a system that can interact in a very special way,” he said at the demonstration. “People spend their lifetime trying to advance [the field of artificial intelligence] by inches. What Watson does has demonstrated the ability to advance the field of artificial intelligence by miles.”

Today’s practice run was just a glimpse of what's to come, in other words. IBM announced the contest in December. The official first-ever man vs. machine Jeopardy competition will take place Friday, and will air on February 14, 15, and 16.

Dinosaur Graveyard Reveals Oldest T. Rex Relative: Dawn Runner

What may be the earliest known relative of T. rex and all meat-eating dinosaurs has been discovered.

The dog-sized mini-predator would've made its future relatives proud as it fed on small dinosaurs and the young of other reptiles, and is now shaking up what scientists had previously learned about the evolution of those extinct giants.

The small, lanky, two-legged carnivore named Eodromaeus murphi -- Eodromaeus being Greek for "dawn runner," murphi in honor of field volunteer Jim Murphy -- weighed only 10 to 15 pounds (4.5 to 6.8 kilograms) and measured about 4 feet (1.2 meters) in length from snout to tail. The skeletons of two specimens were discovered side-by-side in 230-million-year-old iron-rich stone in the "Valley of the Moon" at the foothills of the Andes in northeastern Argentina, which was once the southwest corner of the supercontinent Pangaea.

"With a hike across the valley, you literally walk over the graveyard of the earliest dinosaurs to a time when they ultimately dominate," said researcher Ricardo Martinez, a paleontologist at the National University of San Juan in Argentina.

Journalism group won't give out award named for Helen Thomas

The Society of Professional Journalists is retiring a lifetime achievement award named for former White House correspondent Helen Thomas.

Thomas stepped down from Hearst Newspapers last year after saying outside White House Jewish heritage celebrations in May that Jews in Israel should "get the hell out of Palestine" and "go back home to Poland, Germany, America and everywhere else."

"Her comments were offensive," President Obama said after the resignation. "It is a shame, because Helen's someone who has been a correspondent through I don't know how many presidents — was a real institution in Washington. But I think she made the right decision."

The Detroit News reported Friday evening that Thomas, who grew up in the area, caused further controversy by telling a crowd in Dearborn in December that "Zionists" control Congress, Wall Street and Hollywood.

Thomas was the first recipient of the SPJ award in 2000, and other winners included Tom Brokaw.

"SPJ will simply not give a lifetime achievement award (anymore,)" said Scott Leadingham, spokesman for the group.

Morning all. Watching This Week with Christianne Amanpour. A tear-jerker, but wonderful.

Arcimboldo's Feast for the Eyes

Renaissance artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo painted witty, even surreal portraits composed of fruits, vegetables, fish and trees

Good morning.

Hola. They just showed Tea Party leader Humphries standing up to say we shouldn't be discussing the political ramifications of this, but it looks like they cut out Fuller's response discussed here [Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

Anyway, it's a very moving meeting.

Yes it is, and I have long admired Christiane Amanpour.

I spoke too soon.... They just mentioned Fuller's outburst but didn't show the confrontation.

Actually I haven't! But I think she's doing a terrific job with the show, better than any host they ever had.

The first time I saw her she was ducking bullets in Bosnia, IIRC.

She lost me when her favorite painting she has was posted on the NYT website. It appears to be the WTC on fire.

12. Favorite Item in the Apartment: A massive painting that I got in Iran, a few years ago, by Farideh Lashai, a friend who is also Iran’s pre-eminent abstract-expressionist painter. It gives me joy every time I walk in my door.

That subject prompted a very healthy debate here.

I do remember. It could be something else entirely but it looks too much like the burning WTC towers IMO.

My issue with her is with her stand against Israel.

Actually the Miami Jewish Federation is having a huge meeting this morning to discuss the delegitimization and defamation of Israel going on in college campuses, divesting from Israel, boycotting Israeli foods, etc. It's on the local news now.

Michael Oren, the Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. said a wonderful thing. It's just not anti-Israel and anti-Semitic, it's anti-American.

I don't know much about him. He's a diplomat and also a journalist.

I should have said former diplomat and journalist. Being Iranian doesn't automatically make someone an anti-Semite, of course, but I wouldn't necessarily blame her husband for her stand. There's always James Carville and Mary Matalin.
