Is it a bad thing to say that Emmylou Harris is my least favorite on the stage?

I heart Shawn and Patty. Don't know enough about Buddy.

But have never really gotten Emmylou.

The lyrics to this song are some of my very favorite. It's impressionistic songwriting - little details from a heartbreaking story that's never quite told.

Isn't that Waits' thing? He appears to want to let the listener work it out for themselves.

I was reading a bit about him earlier. He won't even discuss some songs for that reason.

Gram was a rich kid with a big trust fund, he did not need the money and was flattered that the Stones would be ripping him off for material in exchange for letting him hang out with them.

I was messing on my guitar last night and wrote a new crappy song.. It's in Dminor and it's called 'I can't remember you'
Trying to live my life
but it's all in the past
I can't remember our song together
dancing in the wind
Dancing like a wayward feather

I dream emptiness
It's all I got
Every memory is left in the sand
I sit and ponder my fate
who are you to judge
Every morning when I awake

If only I knew you
If only I could remember
The love of my life has passed before my eyes
The love of my life was a lie
If only I could remember you
Before the sun went down
If only I could remember you
The woman of my life

Time has left me..I tried so hard
Stay here beside me..I must be a fool
Catching sands of memories
It's what we do
Time has left me..everything is gone
The woman I can't remember
My life is a dark September

I doubt he had anything to do with that song....and Richards genuinely like Parsons...invited him to play at Altamont with his own band, and he had stayed at Villa Nellcote during the Exile sessions...they were friends

This is what really bothers me about the MyFace generation. With Facebook and Twitter, people grow up terrified of any moment alone with their own thoughts. They have to be connected to someone else at every single moment. Even when talking to someone face to face, which would generally qualify as human connection, they think nothing of texting, checking Facebook, tweets, or anything like that, while very vaguely listening to the person they're talking to. They just cannot function unless they can read regurgitations of other people's thoughts, every minute of every day. And they absolutely cannot bear any time to think to themselves.

This connectivity would be one thing if it were enabling us to share thoughts and information and thus come up with a gestalt greater than the sum of the individual parts. It is early days, but that is manifestly not the case so far.

According to the reported excerpt, Ronnie described the surgery as far more invasive, and got the city wrong. That's pretty sloppy, at best.

Nasrallah: US and Israel caused Lebanese gov't collapse

Nasrallah accused Hariri's son, Prime Minister Sa'ad Hariri, of acting under "heavy American influence." He explained that there was an agreement between the two major Lebanese parties, mediated by Saudi Arabia, that the government would denounce the investigation's findings and stop funding the International Court of Justice. However, Hariri traveled to America, where he announced that he would not accept the compromise.

In August 1994, at the age of 83, Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease,[240] an incurable neurological disorder which destroys brain cells and ultimately causes death.[240][241] In November he informed the nation through a handwritten letter,[240] writing in part:

RWC - IIRC, the announcement of his Alzheimer's came very quickly after he left office.

Thinking about my grandmother, who also had Alzheimer's - there was a period of time when early symptoms were apparent, but she was still able to function perfectly well. It was a very slowly progessing Alzheimer's. I wouldn't be one bit surprised if Reagan had the early symptoms of it just before leaving office. Whether he knew or not, is another matter entirely.

My own mother has some instances of forgetfullness, not quite as quick as she used to be. We all notice a little slip her and there, sh does too, she is an active vibrant lady who has a schedule i wouldnt attempt to keep up with. At 74 she is totally independent and none of us see any reason to worry about her in the slightest, none of us suspect Alzheimers.

That being said, if five years from now her mental faculties degrade and she were to be diagnosed......... I imagine I'll look back and wonder if some of her small slip ups were early signs. I think its only natural.

And yes, it's quite sad. Every little sickness seems to sap a bit more of her away.

She's ninety-two, though. She only started to slip at all in the past ten years or so.

At this point, I don't see how it can matter much, one way or the other. He wasn't diagnosed while in office, and there's no apparent medical consensus about how affected he might have been before he stepped down. He was able to fulfill the duties of his office to the end of his term. It may be alarming to think he wasn't entirely mentally present, but you don't step down from the presidency because you're getting a little forgetful.

Someone sent me a copy of the stalker blog's 'memory hole mosaic' recently. I had to laugh.

They have 47 pages that I deleted. There are currently 37,913 posts at LGF by me. That means I've deleted a WHOPPING 0.123% of my archives! Call the police! Wholesale deletion!

There are a couple that weren't deleted at all, they're still visible.

The stalkers include my post with Michael Yon's picture of a soldier holding an Iraqi boy. Michael Yon himself asked that I delete this post; he was being very protective about his copyright, which was his absolute right, so I deleted it.

And of the rest, again - I make no apologies to anyone for deleting any of them. Some were deleted shortly after being posted because they were mistakes or proved to be bad sources. Others were deleted because I want nothing at all to do with the people I linked, like European fascist mouthpiece Fjordman.

And I deleted all the posts about the Flight 93 memorial, because, as I commented at the time when I deleted them, I was seeing a lot of referrals to those old pages from crazy "anti-jihad" blogs, trying to drum up the bogus controversy again, and I did not want them to be used for that purpose. I realized this story was completely full of crap many years ago, and I regret ever posting about it -- and I'm not trying to "hide" something by deleting those entries, I'm trying to keep bad information off the interwebs.

Same with my FIL. AD is just one name for a wide range of dementia-related pathologies. In fact, only a post-mortem brain biopsy can confirm AD. Was Reagan forgetful of where his keys were at the end of his second term? Maybe. Did he know what keys were *for*? Sure.

And remember, even if he was in the mid-stage of his particular pathology when he left office, he was in much better shape than Woodrow Wilson, who had a pretty massive stroke and was in terrible health when he left office.

In fact:

"Edith Bolling Galt Wilson (October 15, 1872 – December 28, 1961), second wife of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, was First Lady of the United States from 1915 to 1921. She has been labeled "the Secret President" and "the first woman to run the government" for the role she played when her husband suffered prolonged and disabling illness after a stroke in October 1919. Some even refer to her as "the first female president of the United States."[1]"

My grandfather on my dad's side remained an inspiration to me even after Alzheimers had totally taken his memory away.

Why? All that remained was his sweetness and generosity. He smiled at everyone. He had a line that he'd always say, "I don't know you, but I'd like to". If anyone dropped something, he'd try to pick it up for them. He asked everyone how they were doing. He still noticed when his nurses were tired or upset and told them to be happy because they were beautiful and wonderful.

He'd lived a long life as a warm, generous person, and at the end of his life, when everything else was taken from him, what remained was that warmth and generosity of spirit.

I'm trying to look at Pammie's arguments against the new Park51 imam Adhami. Mostly she goes on and on about Adhami's "ties" to Siraj Wahhaj, consisting mostly of praise Adhami offered for SW as well as the fact the he apparently designed SW's mosque (as an architect).

There's an informative article in WSJ about Wahhaj, which is behind the pay wall, but you can find the full text by searching for the headline "One Imam Traces the Path Of Islam in Black America". He seems to be a shady figure, who was a character witness for the Blind Sheikh. (Pammie et al. emphasize the "unindicted co-conspirator" in WTC 1993 bombings angle, but that's basically nothing as far as I'm concerned; first of all, "unindicted co-conspirator" is basically a weasel term when it applies to someone who doesn't have immunity - have evidence - prosecute!; second, the WSJ gives the name of the list as the list of "unindicted persons who may be alleged as co-conspirators", so it's not even an u.c. list, strictly speaking). It remains to be seen how this all develops.

There have been epic moments of forgetfulness from a couple Presidents.Clinton lost the nuclear launch codes for months. If he were older at the time would the critics presume AD in the face of contrary reports by multiple Doctors? Perhaps, but only the critics IMO.

"At one point during the Clinton administration, the codes were actually missing for months," retired Gen. Hugh Shelton wrote in "Without Hesitation: The Odyssey of an American Warrior."

re: #60 Stanley Sea

I'm reminded of an NPR story I listened to. They polled nurses on how they would choose to die. The surprising answer? Cancer. Reason? Because you have notice, you have a chance to get all your affairs in order, mend the fences that need to be mended, etc.

That would be my choice only if I had the option of assisted suicide at the end. There was an excellent article in _Harper's in Nov 2010_, "A good death: Exit strategies" by William T. Vollmann, prompted by his father's painful death from lymphoma. One of the problems with assisted suicide, however, is that unless you've prepared well in advance by the time you're ready you may be deemed not competent to make that decision.

The blurb for the article is at Vollmann. Only subscribers can see the full article, unfortunately.

There's a question as to whether wingnut-butthurt is genetic or a lifestyle choice. It's a tough call considering the genetic disposition they have towards mental entropy. Perhaps it's a combination of the two.

Dimwit Jim Hoft blames Obama for "Tunisian turmoil":

Thanks Barack… Wikileaks Documents Linked to Tunisian Turmoil
Posted by Jim Hoft on Sunday, January 16, 2011, 5:45 PM

This must be more of that smart power we were promised…

A demonstrator holds a placard reading “Game Over” during a rally in front of the Interior Ministry in Tunis. Tunisia’s ousted president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was officially swept aside on Saturday and the speaker of parliament named as his interim successor by the country’s Constitutional Council. (AFP/Fethi Belaid)

Officials are blaming the turmoil in Tunisia on revelations from the leaked Wikileaks documents.
Of course, the Obama Administration did nothing to prevent the greatest mass leak of security documents in US history.
FOX News reported...

I'll take that as an endorsement -- by Jim Hoft -- of the "authoritarian and undemocratic" regime of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. A country which ranked "144th out of 167 countries" under authoritarian regimes. Does this bird brain realize what he's saying here?

My mother-in-law was like that. She didn't recognize my sons when they came to visit her, but she knew they were important to her and they all laughed and had a good time.

My dad, though, was alert to the very end.

My grandma got very delusional at the end, but she was still basically herself--interested in animals, charming.

She mistook me for my mother, frequently, since I was visiting her with my father, and she got confused when people addressed me by name, since it was her mother's name.

The fifth of Labour of Heracles was to clean the Augean stables. This assignment was intended to be both humiliating (rather than impressive, as had the previous labours) and impossible, since the livestock were divinely healthy (immortal) and therefore produced an enormous quantity of dung. These stables had not been cleaned in over 30 years, and over 1,000 cattle lived there. However, Heracles succeeded by rerouting the rivers Alpheus and Peneus to wash out the filth.

Marine Killed During Training Accident ID'd

The Marines have identified the man who died after his amphibious assault vehicle sank during a training exercise.

An Iraq war veteran, Sgt. Wesley J. Rice, 27, of San Antonio, TX, died on Friday when his AAV sank to the bottom of the Del Mar boat basin at Camp Pendleton, officials said.

He was among six marines who were abroad the vehicle during the exercise. The other five marines were able to make it safely out of the vehicle.

Search and rescue crews worked to pump oxygen into the AAV for Rice who was trapped inside for several hours, according to a spokesperson with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Why Are There So Many Jews In Beck's Rogues Gallery?
January 14, 2011 1:00 am ET by Ned Resnikoff

Glenn Beck has said that "there is no one" more "pro-Jew" than himself, but we've shown that claim to be pretty dubious. Not only has Beck used his show to promote the work of anti-Semitic writers like Eustace Mullins and Elizabeth Dilling, he also flogged anti-Semitic stereotypes during his series of lengthy "reports" on the supposedly shadowy international financier and "puppet master" George Soros. Beck has also repeatedly advanced former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's claim that Soros was "helped trigger the economic meltdown" of Southeast Asian currencies in 1997 -- which Mahathir had reportedly suggested was part of a Jewish "agenda."

And then there was tonight's episode, the theme of which was that the 20th century should be seen as "the era of the big lie." According to Beck, during the past 100 years a loose association of shadowy figures who believed themselves to be the "intelligent minority" infected the country with their notion that the people are "animals" who can be controlled through propaganda. He further warned that this same elite was leading the modern progressive movement and would similarly seek to manipulate the masses in the twenty-first century.

Continues.

You can see through the circles, look at the ones in Florida or NW Pennsylvania, the circles that straddle borders. They aren't 100% transparent, more like 50%, but you CAN actually see through them. You can't simply declare things equivalent, Buck. It doesn't work that way.

Yes, calling him a war criminal was a heavy, stupid charge to make. But it's a legal charge. It has nothing to do with advocating armed insurrection.

You are comparing wanting Bush arrested, to wanting people to violently overthrow the government. Even you can't honestly find those two things equivalent.

273 ClaudeMonet  Sun, Jan 16, 2011 9:34:46pm

re: #29 Renaissance_Man

Amen. I don't "tweet", or "twit" as I call it. I'm not on Facebook. I use my cell phone as--a phone. I don't even know how to text (if you want to tell me something, talk to me). I don't mind time alone. I try hard to avoid boring people with the minutiae of my everyday existence. And very often, when I have an original thought (or what I think is original), instead of retching it out to the immediate world, I write it down, then come back to it later to see if it's as good as I thought (usually not!).

Apparently, I am a dinosaur.

Sure, but it is not the map/graphic everyone is freaked about.

Look, you can say anything you want. You can see what ever you want. However it does look like you are being biased when you ignore Democratic use of violent rhetoric and are only outraged by SarahPac.

Of course when the Democratics are in power there is a lot less 'anti-government' and targeting of political opponents. However it is still there. It was used very heavily during the Bush administration. The only difference was that there was a lot less whining about it.

IMO, there is balance, it just doesn't happen at exactly the same time, and is not exactly the same words.

Imagine a movie coming out next year that calls itself a documentary and infers that Obama and his family are conspiring with terrorists? Oh ya... they tried that... Well they did it to Bush as well.

What about a "investigative report" from a network that makes up evidence to slander GWB, just before an election? I mean Dan Rather and Eason Jordan were huge towering media giants who were against Buish, and they proved to be biased and liars.

Don't like the racism you see directed at the President? Well a few years ago it was directed at Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice. It was the most appalling racial slurs and epithets. It was reported here, of course, and it came from the left.

Again, it is a timing issue. During Republican administrations the hate filled rhetoric comes from the left. AND when there is a Democratic administration .....Same shit different pile.

You are looking for the exact same rhetoric, and it has to be at the same time. Impossible. And not relevant.

That's not what's happening. You're ignoring that, for example, you're comparing the charge that Bush is a war criminal-- a legal charge of malfeasance-- to the charge that Obama is actively attempting to destroy the United States, and that 2nd amendment remedies may be necessary to stop him.

It is very, very rare that two sides on an issue are actually equivalent. That you constantly assume they are is the major, gigantic, and highly visible defect in your logic.

Biased or not, but I don't buy the notion that Rs and Ds are equivalent in this sense. They pander to different cultures. So when Ds have a map with bullseyes and Rs have a map with gunsights (and creepy slogans), yes, it's different, especially if the R say something like "don't retreat, RELOAD" and hint at revolution and 2nd amd remedies.

Imagine a movie coming out next year that calls itself a documentary and infers that Obama and his family are conspiring with terrorists? Oh ya... they tried that... Well they did it to Bush as well.

What mainstream movie would that be?

What about a "investigative report" from a network that makes up evidence to slander GWB, just before an election? I mean Dan Rather and Eason Jordan were huge towering media giants who were against Buish, and they proved to be biased and liars.

So now it's CBS that made up evidence, instead of unknown persons who deceived them?

Fahrenheit 9/11 .... Did ya see it?

So now it's CBS that made up evidence, instead of unknown persons who deceived them?

Ya, you see that is where you fall down. Dan Rather said on TV that he knew for sure where the document originated from. He tried to use the trust he had built up to over the years to put aside any questions. He lied. (I can't believe we are discussing this).

I will be grateful for links.

Fine, here is a search of this site for the words "lefty blogs".

It is a really good snapshot of some of the hate filled rhetoric that was directed at the previous administration.

Also See a search of "the Protocols of Daily Kos"

Pulitzer Prize winning author Jane Smiley is afflicted with a severe case of Bush Derangement Syndrome; as we reported in 2005, in an article for Salon.com she called for the entire Bush administration to be summarily executed.

What about a rhetoric so hatefilled, and so prevelant that they gave it a name? "Bush Derangement Syndrome"

Again, after you do the search you have to start at the bottom to see what the left was saying about the right during the Bush Administration.

Also remember the internet amplifies this stuff, and as the internet grows it looks like there is more out there. The internet of 2004 was used very differently than today.

I am trying to walk a line here. I remind you that I am saying that during a Republican administration the Left fires the most hateful rhetoric, and during a Democratic administration the right does. Not "word for word the same", that is a stupid standard. Not at the exact same time, that would also be dumb.

The Bush family really is tied to the Bin Ladens. Osama Bin Laden is a black sheep of the Bin Laden family. And the Bush family really is tied to the House of Saud. That isn't made up at all.

What you were asked for was to provide links to racist comments about Powell and Rice. You didn't do that. There certainly were terrible things said about them, but it was in no way equiavlent to what is directed at the President.

Your only argument is one of assertion. You repeat, over and over, that the amount of vitriol and hate are equivalent. You have nothing to support this idea, and it is an idea that is amazingly unlikely simply statistically.

Similarly, you defend Palin's use of 'blood libel' and call people attacking her for using it 'assholes'-- which, ironically, means that you're calling a large number of rabbis assholes. Fun!

282 Buck  Mon, Jan 17, 2011 10:42:49am

This was in the "lefty blogs" list.

Blatant racism on the left. Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice are apparently now considered fair game for the most appalling racial slurs and epithets.

You might want to start your collection of screen shots. It might get difficult to find links six to seven years from now that are still active. I know I am having that difficulty. Doesn't mean it didn't happen.

A Wisconsin radio host refuses to apologize for calling Condoleezza Rice an “Aunt Jemima.”

Also, I have a history of not knowing which sites can be linked to. So here is a simple google search.

re: #286 publicityStunted

Like this one?

Oh, but that doesn't count /

Of course it counts.... that is MY point. Are you really not reading anything I write?

It is the left that is saying these sort of comments don't count (if they originate from the left).

As to being organized by the democratic party.... Remember Howard Dean... He became the DNC Chair soon after this fundraiser:

So there were no TV cameras last Monday night when pro-Dean comics took the stage on West 18th St. in Chelsea at a $250-a-head Dean fund-raiser (reduced from $500) and competed to see how often they could use the F-word in the same sentence.
Comic Judy Gold dissed President Bush as “this piece of living, breathing s—-” and Janeane Garofalo ridiculed the Medicare prescription-drug bill that Bush had just signed as the “you can go f—- yourself, Grandma” bill.

Just a few days before, rival John Kerry had used the F-word to attack Bush in Rolling Stone magazine in an apparent bid to sound hip, but Dean’s event was “enough to make John Kerry blush,” as rival Dick Gephardt’s spokesman Erik Smith tartly put it.

And the Dean event got a lot worse. Comedian David Cross used the N-word for blacks in a disjointed “joke” apparently based on the premise that it’s fine for a pro-Dean comic to use racial epithets as long as the goal is to claim Republicans are racists.

Comic Kate Clinton evoked Michael Jackson (hit with new child-sex-abuse charges) and said: “Frankly, I’m far more frightened of Condoleezza Rice” - the Bush national security adviser who has nothing in common with Jackson except being black.

Rice seems to drive liberal woman comics especially nuts. Sandra Bernhard insulted her in racial terms with a “Yes Massa” accent at another Dean fundraiser the same night. Perhaps the pro-Dean comics find it unbearable that the most powerful black woman in U.S. history, close friend to the president and his wife - and a brilliant classical pianist to boot - dares to be a Republican.

Actually, there was something to offend everyone. Dean rival Joe Lieberman got ridiculed for being unable to campaign on Jewish holidays because he’s Orthodox. Vice President Dick Cheney was accused of talking “like Mary Jo Buttafuoco.”

Link

I can't possibly be expected to show a link to every example out there. Many links are dead now, seven years later...

I was around then, and I was actively aware of this. As was our host, and many others.

Except you're lying, because nobody is saying that. WHat people are saying is that there isn't an equivalent amount of these comments coming from 'the left'-- and they're right.

The only reason you believe that they are equivalent is because you desperately want to believe it.

Just as the only reason you believe the people who are attacking Palin over her use of the term 'blood libel' are 'assholes' is because you desperately need to believe that.

It doesn't appear to matter to you that you're calling many, many devout Jews 'assholes' in the process.

Except you're lying, because nobody is saying that. WHat people are saying is that there isn't an equivalent amount of these comments coming from 'the left'-- and they're right.

Nor is there, in at least the last two decades, anything close to an equivalent of this:

- abortion clinic bombings
- Oklahoma City
- the attack on the 1996 summer Olympics in Atlanta
- the Tennessee church shootings (by someone who "blamed liberals" for the country's problems)
- that white supremacist whackjob who posted at freerepublic and then shot up the Holocaust museum
- another white supremacist whackjob who killed police officers in Philadelphia, allegedly because they were "coming to take his guns"
- the leaking of the names of 1300 Hispanic Utah residents because there were "illegals"
- Scott Roeder
- the Tides Foundation shooter, who outright said he was "inspired by Glenn Beck"

In fact, pointing out all the so-called "Bush hate" on the left only serves to underscore the obvious - if it was "just as bad" as what's done by the right, where was the homegrown anti-government violence that even came close to what happened during Clinton's term?
