And Now: Hot Air Falls for Applause-Gate

Wingnuts • Views: 22,514

The right wing blogosphere is doing something useful this holiday weekend: providing solid empirical evidence that stupidity is contagious.

The latest clown school dropout to fail to understand the difference between an applause prompt and closed captioning for the deaf: Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey.

Obviously, most Hot Air readers disagree with my assessment (and Allahpundit’s) of Barack Obama’s speech last Wednesday evening at the University of Arizona. They also blame Obama more for the odd tone of the event, with its whooping and whistling and t-shirts, than the university that organized it. Fair enough. But one thing on which we can all agree is that that the White House wrote the speech, and apparently added “applause” indicators into Obama’s speech that the university put on the Jumbotron in their captioning for the audience.

[…]

Update: Guy Benson says that the White House may not have been responsible for the applause indicators…

Notice that Morrissey starts by complaining that he and Allahpundit were getting slammed by their own readers for not hatin’ on Obama enough. But the magic healing power of stupid shall reunite those torn asunder by moderation.

And yet … how will they ever explain this?

Even Rush (being deaf) said today that the applause signs were actually closed captioning…

2 Gus  Mon, Jan 17, 2011 1:07:03pm

And when the closed captioning read “[MUSIC]” the audience all started playing their kazoos.

My prediction:

A year from now, after reams of commentary on how it was Closed Captioning and not indicators to the crowd, a majority of Republicans will still believe that those [APPLAUSE] signs were indicators to the crowd - in much the same way that they still believe that Obama was not actually born in Hawaii, that he is still a Muslim, and that he is a secret Communist conspirator since birth.

17 Kid A  Mon, Jan 17, 2011 1:17:05pm

Charles, as you well know…. :)

Most Tea-partiers will outright lie and say that they never supported George W. Bush and were against him because of his spending policies from the start. Amazingly enough, it’s practically impossible to find anyone in the Tea Party or the Republican Party (the same, yes I know) who admits to ever having supported George W. Bush.

It’s amazing he got elected in the first place…and then even more amazing that he ever got elected again, what with no apparent Republican support.

Self-delusion on the Right appears to be something of an enormous daily staple.

And with that, I bid ye all goodnight. =)

OT: Barak quits Israel Labour party

Israeli defence minister Ehud Barak has resigned from the country’s Labour party to form a breakaway group.

Labour was the party that led the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 and for years afterwards it was the natural party of government in the country.

But the party has been in decline since the late 1970s and at the last election it ranked fourth.

Mr Barak had faced a growing push from Labour party members to quit the right-wing coalition he joined as defence minister.

He headed off that challenge by quitting the party and taking four parliamentary members with him.

Mr Barak told a media conference the new movement would be called Independence, adding he had faced a “never-ending fight” watching Labour’s “continuous drift to the left and again to the left”.

Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Mr Barak’s split from Labour made his government stronger.

Now people. Like I was saying earlier, it’s simply not possible to be both a Communist and a Republican. Well, it’s equally impossible, (you can’t get more impossible than impossible) to be both a Communist and a Muslim. One tenet of Communism is, after all, atheism.

Communism is so far in our rear view mirror that a dwindling number of Americans know what it really is, except that it’s bad and an insult when directed at presidents.

“Afghanistan’s former foreign minister Rangeen DADF Spanta received 45 million U.S. dollars for a Chinese mining company would be entitled to recover the country’s giant copper deposits, according to an Afghan diplomat.

Good grief. The good news though, is that there is an easy way for us to end all inflamed rhetoric and violent images in politics for ever.

[Link: www.blogger.com…]

Get it? All anyone who opposes the Tea Party and their ilk has to do is give up. Don’t oppose their views. Don’t dare have a political philosophy that disagrees with them. Above all, don’t challenge them in elections, win seats, or pass laws they don’t like. Just stand aside, let them do as they please, and no-thing bad will happen.

If it were Muslims, Latinos or Blacks saying this, the screams of “terrorism!” and “treason!” would be deafening. Yet when a predominantly white group does it, it gets the kid glove treatment.

I’m in NH and I just remembered a local Paulian news story from back during the ‘08 primaries. College-age kids, chasing after Hannity and pelting him with snowballs :o.

Ah, it came right up in a YouTube search for ‘Hannity’, ‘Paul’ and ‘Snowballs’:

I wonder if they miss being on the outside vs having become somewhat mainstreamed through the Tea Party’s ascendancy.

It’s not working. Plenty of their readers are mocking them for their ‘tingles’. Because you can never give your ‘enemy’ any credit at all, even when due, because he’s really part of an evil regime and you won’t be caught by his tricksy ways.

Or something.

He’s the President! Damnit!!!

After 9/11, all my lefty friends and I called each other and admitted that Bush was doing admirably, and saying all the right things, and reacting well. We didn’t love him afterward, we just approved that he did President right when it really counted.

Is that really such a weird concept?

BTW, back from the San Francisco MLK day march, where I represented the State of Israel by holding up a big sign with a quote from Dr. King on Israel.

A good time was had by all, and we got much approval. Except from the Bay Area Women in Black, and their friends from Sabeel, also marching. They didn’t like us. And they didn’t have ANYTHING about Dr. King on their signs, which I thought was tacky, tacky, tacky.

hell no. they’re actual 1970’s-era slacks, which means that they’re about 3 sizes too tight in the crotchal region. they’re good for some laughs at a disco theme party and absolutely nothing else!

The HS I used to work at has had many uniform and dress codes over the years. Apparently at one point in the late 60s (it was still a boys’ school then), the dress code was solid-colored slacks, and a polo shirt.

One of the boys went to a thrift store and got a pair of double-knit polyester golfing slacks in salmon pink, and paired them with a black-and-white checkered polo shirt, and wore this ensemble every day.

He was hauled into the Dean’s office.

“Brother, I am in dress code,” he pleaded.

“You may be, but you’re also humiliating the school,” Brother decreed. “Get some normal-colored pants.”

Kind of neat.

Ophiuchus is a large constellation located around the celestial equator. Its name is Greek (Ὀφιοῦχος) for ‘serpent-bearer’, and it is commonly represented as a man grasping the snake that is represented by the constellation Serpens. Ophiuchus was one of the 48 constellations listed by the second-century astronomer Ptolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. It was formerly referred to as Serpentarius English pronunciation: /ˌsɜrpənˈtɛəriəs/, a Latin word meaning the same as its current name.

Why Are There So Many Jews In Beck’s Rogues Gallery?

[…]

And then there was tonight’s episode, the theme of which was that the 20th century should be seen as “the era of the big lie.” According to Beck, during the past 100 years a loose association of shadowy figures who believed themselves to be the “intelligent minority” infected the country with their notion that the people are “animals” who can be controlled through propaganda. He further warned that this same elite was leading the modern progressive movement and would similarly seek to manipulate the masses in the twenty-first century.

So who are these nefarious figures from government, finance, media, and academia who believe they can and should control everyone’s choices, “not just in politics, but everywhere”? In tonight’s episode, Beck singles out nine of them. One is AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka. Here are the other eight:

* Propagandist and ad man Edward Bernays, who revolutionized 20th century public relations.

* Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, who was Bernays’ uncle and influenced his method.

* George Soros, who Beck claimed shared Freud and Bernays’ philosophy that people are “animals” who can be “experimented with.”

* Cass Sunstein, who Beck insisted “is Edward Bernays” and has called “the most dangerous man in America.”

* Former SEIU president Andy Stern, who Beck said is part of a self-proclaimed “intelligent minority” of powerful men trying to manipulate the “bewildered herd” of America.

* Walter Lippman, a prominent columnist of the mid-20th century, who Beck accused of viewing government “as a way to control people.”

* Frances Fox Piven, professor at CUNY, who Beck accused of “sowing the seeds” of revolution.

* Ed Rendell, the governor of Pennsylvania, who Beck said thinks of himself as “one of the elites that are there to guide the herd.”

Eagle-eyed readers might notice what all eight of these people have in common. Yes, eight out of the nine villians Beck identified tonight are Jewish.

Probably just a coincidence, right?

[Link: mediamatters.org…]

Aside from questions about Anti-semitism, and the standard Beck paranoid ranting - his list is particularly notable because he puts Ed Rendell on the same list of 10 influential people as Sigmund Freud?

That’s like putting Sarah Palin on the same list of most influential women in history as Marie Curie

Dan Savage ran a column of people in long-term relationships telling how they ‘met sleazy’. One girl, Jewish, got a ‘chai’ tattooed on her hip. (Yeah.) She then went to bed with some guy who, while taking off her underwear, saw the tattoo, and said, “Oh, a chai? You’re Jewish? Me too!”

Move to San Diego backed for suspect’s trial

Federal authorities are planning to move the trial of the alleged gunman in the Jan. 8 mass shooting in Tucson to San Diego because of extensive pretrial publicity in Arizona, federal law enforcement sources said Sunday night.

Jared Lee Loughner, 22, is charged in federal court in Arizona, but court officials plan to move the case out of the state within several weeks, the sources said. They cited publicity and the sensitivity of the case in Arizona, where one of those fatally shot was John M. Roll, the state’s chief federal judge.

The new chief judge, Roslyn O. Silver, will make the final decision about any venue change, but one law enforcement official said, “It’s going to happen. It’s just a matter of time.”

Mixed reaction to Ricky Gervais as Golden Globes host

Here’s a selection of his more controversial jokes:

• “It was a big year for 3D movies. Toy Story, Despicable Me, Tron. It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional, except the characters in The Tourist. I already feel bad about that joke. I’m jumping on the bandwagon, because I haven’t even seen The Tourist. Who has?

• I’d like to quash the rumours that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so that the Hollywood Foreign Press can hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish, that is not the only reason - they also accepted bribes.

• “I Love You Phillip Morris stars Jim Carey and Ewan McGregor - two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. So, the complete opposite of some famous scientologists. Probably. My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke.”

• “I was sure the Golden Globe for special effects would go to the team that airbrushed [the Sex and the City 2] poster. Girls, we know how old you are. I saw one of you in an episode of Bonanza.”

• On Jennifer Lopez - “She’s just Jenny from the block. If the block in question is that one on Rodeo Drive between Cartier and Prada.”

• On multi-millionaire Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg: “Heather Mills calls him the one that got away.”

• While introducing Robert Downey Jr - “Many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail.”

Somebody call a whambulance!

Here’s some other suggestions.

Holy crap. And that’s as opposed to 4% of non-Tea Party people.

So, three times as likely to endorse it.

There are other interesting statistics in that poll. On the question of whether violence against the current government was justified [my two cents, good grief No!], the poll reports:

* * ** ** * * * * yes no ?
White *** ** ** 6 84 11
African-American 5 81 13
Hispanic ** ** * 9 76 15

18 to 29 ** 17 68 15
30 to 45 ** 3 90 6
46 to 65 ** 3 86 11

Northeast 7 81 12
Midwest** 9 85 6
South *** 5 82 13
West *** 4 81 15

[applause] indicators appear in the transcript of a speech for the purpose of warning the speaker when people are likely to clap, so he knows to pause and doesn’t try to talk over the noise. Otherwise you’d have the speaker talking straight through the clapping. I recall that in many of his earlier speeches, Obama seemed to have a problem with this.
