Republicans Trying to Defund CIA’s Climate Monitoring Program

Environment • Views: 29,429

In our third story of the day about the Republican Party’s big push to destroy America’s ability to deal with climate change, Climate Science Watch’s Alexa Jay reports that the GOP is also attempting to de-fund the CIA’s climate monitoring and analysis program.

The CIA Center on Climate Change and National Security has a directive both to provide the federal government with climate analysis and declassify as appropriate satellite data that may assist scientists in climate-related research.

Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyoming), who unsuccessfully tried to block funding for the Center in 2009, has promised to renew his attempts to de-fund the program. Entirely sidestepping the nuances of the program, Barrasso declared that the CIA should focus its resources on stopping terrorists, not “spying on sea lions” (Climatewire 1/14/11, subs. required). This is the type of short-sighted discourse Barrasso brings to the Senate as a member of the Energy and Natural Resources, Environment and Public Works, and Foreign Relations committees. Billing himself as “the Doctor” with a cure for the “onslaught” of EPA regulations, the Senator also plans to introduce legislation that would block implementation of EPA climate rules.

The MEDEA program (Measurements of Earth Data for Environmental Analysis), created in 1992 to advise the government on environmental surveillance, was subsequently shut down by the Bush Administration. Under the Obama administration, the intelligence community resurrected its environmental and global change monitoring capabilities with the CIA Center on Climate Change and National Security, and has declassified thousands of MEDEA images for use by scientists in climate-related research. MEDEA capabilities will be supported by the Center going forward.

Lalala if we can't hear the bad news it isn't happening.

What jackasses.

It is so insane they accuse Obama of trying to ruin the country while pulling shit like this on a constant basis.

Memo to the GOP:

Catering to the uneducated, the conspiracy-minded, and white evangelicals is not a winning long-term electoral strategy.

You are pushing former republicans like myself farther away every day.

If we just stop spending good taxpayer dollars gathering that pesky data, we won't have to spend even more money doing anything about the climate!

See how fiscally prudent we Republicans are?

I'm sure the Russians and the Chinese will love being able to exploit new areas because the GOP decideded the CIA doesn't need to monitor the changing regions of the Earth.

I guess smaller government equals less intelligent government when the GOP is in charge these days.

7 garzooma  Thu, Jan 20, 2011 11:12:44am

Apparently this MEDEA program was started by George H. W. Bush. Only to be shut down by his son, even though the reality of climate change had become more established.

who are the former republicans?...fleeing the party in droves, for where?...as for me I was never a republican in the first place but in the political landscape, conservatism is dead, and there is no where to go and I see no reason to drag myself back into a voting booth...but what in the world ever made you think that these people, these career pols, these elected thieves were ever serving you/me/us in the first place?....they don't give a damn about you now and they never did....did you pay them to screw you over?....political parties are no more than legal organized crime syndicates with tax money for the mother lode...I will always believe that conservatism is a honest lifestyle choice, but politically, it's over....funny, it doesn't seem to bother me a whole lot

It's not tax money that's the mother lode. It's the sweet-ass lobbyist gigs you get after serving in government. And before. And, sometimes, during.

Politicians don't get rich off of tax money; they get rich by deregulating, handing out subsidies, and then being rewarded by those industries that they've benefited.

Partisanship isn't the problem. Massive amounts of money being dumped into propaganda is the problem. The lack of meaningful campaign finance regulation is the problem. The revolving door between political positions and lobbying groups is the problem.

The problem is that money buys votes via propaganda, and we consider that money to be "speech", and thus, not subject to meaningful regulation.

OT: If you were sitting on your ass, watching TV and eating potato chips, you would not have gotten hit by that car.

Pedestrian deaths increased sharply during the first half of 2010, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). On Wednesday, the Executive Director of the GHSA accused the first lady's obesity program of causing the deaths by encouraging people to exercise.

In an interview with the Washington Examiner, GHSA Executive Director Barbara Harsha said that while there are not yet definitive answers as to why there were more pedestrian deaths in 2010 than 2009, Obama's "get moving" movement could be at least partially to blame.

I didn't mean "treason" so much in a legal sense but a conceptual one (or maybe I'm just bitterly remembering how fond the GOP was of tossing the term about for people who disagreed with the Iraq war, and meanwhile, here they are jeopardizing America's future in a way Al-Qaeda could only dream of)

Yeah, I'm bitter about that too. And yes, I think he's acting against America's best interests, which is not what he was elected to do, at all, at all.

But I got tetchy about the legal definition of treason during the Bush years.

Healthy living causes people to go outside, and that gets people killed. Therefore, Michelle Obama is a murderer.

I wish I could say I'm embellishing the right-wing meme, but that's a pretty accurate portrayal.

Which is quite ironic, given how this bunch has tended to sneer at liberals for worrying over safety and the like.

I guarantee that the 2012 election cycle will be a shitwreck of epic proportions. We will see things that would shock most seasoned political observers. It will go full Godwin, and beyond, and back again. We will be inundated with advertisements which ask, without a trace of irony, if their opponent is actually the antichrist.

Who wants to place a gentlemen's bet with me? I wager that there will be a major television ad calling Obama the antichrist. That is my prediction.

It's been like that for a while. I'm starting to notice that even the wingnuts don't take themselves seriously anymore. It's just a frothing frenzy for its own sake and they care care if an outrage is real or not. It's all about jumping around and flinging poo.

For real. There's a guy I hang out with occasionally who is basically a straight down the line small-government right-winger. When we have arguments, he nowadays deliberately exaggerates his position and plays it as farce, every time. He doesn't even try to make it sound rational any more.

This undated photo combo provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation shows the t-shirts contained within a backpack, center, found on a bench at the corner of North Washington Street and West Main Avenue in Spokane, Wash. on Monday, Jan. 17, 2011. The FBI is seeking information connected to the identity of the person or persons seen with this Swiss Army-brand backpack. The bag contained a sophisticated explosive that had a remote detonator and the ability to cause many casualties, an official familiar with the case said. The FBI said it has no suspects in the case and has asked the public for help in identifying anyone who might have been seen in the downtown area where the bomb was found.

113 lostlakehiker  Thu, Jan 20, 2011 12:25:38pm

re: #18 Fozzie Bear

The part that scares the shit out of me is that the GOP ran on this platform, and they are following through. None of this is unexpected. This is what a large proportion of the electorate wants.

It doesn't make sense. AGW is indeed a national security issue. Many nations are one bad harvest away from revolution. The U.S. has decisions to make on whether we will continue to burn food [by converting corn to ethanol] even if food as food becomes tight worldwide.

The wheat harvest in Russia last year fell well short of normal, in the wake of a heat wave that saw temperatures around 100 F in Moscow, and widespread forest fires.

The incredible advances in crop science, the legacy of Norman Borlaug, have pushed famine to the edge of our awareness. But crop science can only do so much. At thus and so an average growing season temperature, yields begin to drop. Exceed that by much, and they drop sharply.

Land that lies sufficiently near sea level is at risk of salt water infiltration. The water table, after all, lies below the surface of the land. Let sea levels rise, and land that is secure from outright flooding may yet become ill suited to farming. The most severe effects figure to be felt in Taiwan, Bangladesh, and Vietnam, but food is traded worldwide, and prices react to events anywhere.

Shall the armed forces not be apprised of climate developments? Do we need a deepwater Arctic ocean fleet? When should it be ready? These are military questions that hang on when the Arctic will be more or less ice free in the summer. And, tragically, it's no longer a question of if. Just, when?

History moves partly to its own rhythm. Nations and peoples have cycles of patriotism and cynicism. But history also moves in response to events of another sort. Technological shocks, the advent of mighty warriors, and climate shocks, all figure into the story.

The CIA has to be able to predict what may happen to foreign governments and the policies they may adapt toward us. Without any clue about future climate, their predictions can only miscarry.

But I'm going to be charitable to the electorate. Many of those who voted Republican did so because they were out of work or at risk of being put out of work. It was the economy. If the Democrats ever tend effectively to Job 1, they'll win those voters back.

Such talk is anathema to the Bible belt bunch. You don't f*** with theology. It's against the rules by which these guys live to play the Antichrist card so as to carry Tennessee.

There are, it must be granted, TV preachers who say all sorts of wild stuff. But they're not taken seriously by the broad masses, who attend their own local services rather than tune in to today's Reverend Billy Sunday.

Ahh but it's not about winnable viewers overall, it's about winnable conservative votes. The GOP base isn't attached to reality in any meaningful way anymore.

I think there will be a TV ad, possibly only run in certain red states, which calls Obama the antichrist, or at least "just asks the question".

America has no ability to deal with climate change. Nobody, not even everybody working together, has/have the ability to deal with climate change.
We don't cause it. We don't effect it. We can only react to it. The 0bama administration's goal is the upending of the USA and relegating the nation to third world status as punishment for imagined sins.
Even if they believed in 'climate change', which would not be beyond belief given their generally un-sane positions, their goal is only to use the issue to cripple the country.
