Haven't had a TV in years - but my current internet connection is horrid. I'm starting to regret not having gone to a bar or cafe for faster internet. I bet the enhanced presentation is talked about quite a bit in the commentary. I wonder if it really will make his arguments more compelling.

In responding to criticism of the post, Erickson addressed that wording only by saying it "sound[s] like a caveat, but it is not a caveat to any of us here." Whatever that means. He did, however, say he stands by the post, so … here we are: Erick Erickson thinks "mass bloodshed" will be necessary if anti-abortion activists fail to convey to their elected officials the importance of overturning Roe v. Wade. Not just inevitable: "Necessary."

I'm continuing to go through Paul's nonsensical attempt to cull $500 billion from the budget in one fiscal year. The whoppers keep coming up.
National Park Service: Reduce 42 percent
In 2009, repairs were performed on the Vietnam Memorial and those repairs were done without the use of taxpayer
funds. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund took over the duties of preserving the memorial because the National
Park Service did not have the resources from the federal government.
Every year the amount of appropriations increase to the National Park Service, yet both the GAO and the
Congressional Research Services have stated that NPS’s backlog on projects and maintenance would cost several
billion dollars to the American taxpayer. National Parks have seen a decrease in visitors and campers each year due
to trash, lack of facilities, or even safety. Returning these public lands back to the states and or the private sector
would allow an increase in quality, safety and a reduction in government spending each year.
The NPS website indicates that their request for FY 2011 is actually below FY 2010 actual - $3.14 billion from $3.16 billion.
And the NPS stats from their site indicate a pretty significant increase in users in the past couple of years, and that's with an increase in user fees and national park fees that cover the shortfall at many parks.
Multi-Year Summary Report
Year Recreation
Visits
2006 272,623,980
2007 275,581,547
2008 274,852,949
2009 285,579,941
The backlog in fixes needs to be addressed because this is the nation's heritage and legacy we're talking about.
Not that he seems to care much about any of it.

The Pauls have been pretty much transparent about their beliefs. The Tea Party heard "less spending" and they were onboard, not really knowing (or maybe caring) what was cut, but it's not a surprise to hear it, really. Typical libertarian philosophy.
The TPers aren't wealthy people, by and large. These cuts would hurt them and their families terribly.

You should have heard the wierdness she came out with this weekend on how the Founders didn't rest until slavery was banished.
What. The. Fuck.
The whole thing about the 3/5 compromise and the Civil War just flew right by her. I guess Ol' George Washington and John Adams just waved their hands and BAM! Slavery was gone, Ya know?
Chris Matthews has been going off about that non stop tonight.
She also said some amazing things about how race and beliefs didn't matter for settlers coming here in the past since we were all equal.

Big talk about alt-energy, but unless you reduce NIMBY, major projects aren't going to get off the ground - whether it's wind, solar, or nuclear, to say nothing of the transmission lines and upgraded infrastructure necessary to send the power where it's needed. And the time it takes to bring those projects to fruition adds needless costs and incentives to go with existing power generation methods.

I'm continuing to go through Paul's nonsensical attempt to cull $500 billion from the budget in one fiscal year. The whoppers keep coming up.
The backlog in fixes needs to be addressed because this is the nation's heritage and legacy we're talking about.
Not that he seems to care much about any of it.
I wonder if Rand and his ilk would be so gung-ho to cut the NPS budget (among others) if they realize that the NPS also staffs and maintains the nation's military parks (Shiloh, Gettysburg, Valley Forge, etc.). I'd bet they'd shit a brick...

Telecom should not be a right. It's a service, that should remain private and mostly limited by ability to pay.
So poor people's kids shouldn't be able to do homework at home? They should have to go to a library and wait in line for limited-time computer use during open hours?

In all honesty, why should Telecom differ from roads? Both are required for life in modern America, yet only one is (largely) free. Sometimes some things become too important to be limited to the rich.
Exactly. High-speed internet is mandatory these days. Period. We should have near universal infrastructure in this country to support it.

A real world example of the telecom internet issue. I live in a high speed deficient area. I can't hook up to high speed except through a stick or a satellite so it's still not 'fast'. Better then dial up but not a good as a good highspeed. It's also cost a lot of money and severally limits my access to all things net. Streaming this speech would cost me a whack of money.
My part of the county along with a couple of other areas has been cited for upgrades so that highspeed will be available to all households in the area. The gov't has a fund which part of that money will come from. So if it ever actually gets done then I will be able to hook up to the type of net connection that most people in urban areas have. I will pay monthly for that connection.

No reason to. Just answer with a Republican plan to do that. Frankly, I'm sure the GOP could come up with a good one.
You mean like they came up with one when they they controlled the White House and both chambers in Congress after the midterm election of 2002? They had their shot and didn't take. There is no evidence that they have any ideas to do it now. NONE.

I suspect I'm in the minority, but I honestly don't think this was a home run speech. It's a good speech, but it's missing something. It just doesn't feel quite as tight as I expect.
The points on alternative energy were good, and he's made some good points. Ok, I think i've figured it out. This speech isn't going to change the political landscape, and at best it's going to set the framework to score later.
It's like it's a single. It's a hit but it didn't win the game. And I keep thinking 'he's going to hit it out and everythings going to be great.' but this isn't that speech. This is all about 3 months and 6 months down the road.

Of course the problem then is making sure the company that gets that money which doled out by a state board actually uses the money to upgrade their rural areas.

In rural areas there will not be the density of subscribers to make low cost internet profitable for companies, so perhaps the gov't could subsidize there.
But in a city like where I am, for Cox to charge me $45/mo for high speed internet is simply a function of their exclusive access to the property in which I now sit.

I'm not sure how much they pledged. But the way they look at it, it is an economic and productiveness issue. It's not just households but businesses and in my area rural businesses. Trying to run a business these days with just dial-up puts areas at an economic disadvantage and impedes access not just to information but pretty much anything. It also means that business in other areas that use the net don't have access to those deficient markets whether a household or a business.

I would love to pay that. I could get dial-up an it would only be 30 bucks a month but that just makes everything so slow, also means I barely would ever look at any pictures.
I would pay less if I used the net less. It pretty much goes by the amount of bytes you use. I think the lowest- about 750 mb a month is around 25 dollars.

Just to add a bit to the economic argument about why subidizing makes sense for the overall economic benefit of the country and not just me as an individual.
Say the government subsidizes the infrastructure and I can pay even 100 bucks a month for access. That would mean as a small business owner I would have and extra 100 to 200 per month to put into, an extra 1200-2400 per year as well as be able to do net stuff quicker (Time is money in business) This money and time could go towards capital, or marketing, or labor cost. Things that would lead to more income and profit. More income equals more taxes and possibily more jobs.
Now times me by 100 or 1000 or 10,000 and times that over 20 years.

It kind of is.
The whole point of the estate tax is to prevent the rise of a hereditary aristocracy. The people who wrote it in the first place (and Andrew Carnegie, who lobbied relentlessly to get it passed), intended it to be a zero revenue tax (people who had amassed great fortunes would be motivated to spend it on what they thought important, or give it all away, before they died).

Well, this is what he said:
And during the last two years, that is exactly what we have gotten — along with record deficits and debt — to the point where the President is now urging Congress to increase the debt limit.
This is just a lie. It's not the last two years that have brought us to the point. The debt limit has been raised again and again, under Reagan, under Bush I, under Clinton, under Bush II. Saying that it is the past two years that have brought us to this point is a blatant, stupid, political lie, and he insults my intelligence by expecting me to fall for it. I am not saying I agree with everything he says. I don't agree with everything any politician says. Of course, compared to the rest of the FoxTeaPublicans the bar is low.
Ryan is clear, does not engage in the typical Fox News talking points and actually has real solutions. Again I am not saying those solutions need to be implemented without discussion but he is the only FoxTeaPublican that has solutions and not just Beck/Limbaugh/Hannity talking points. I think he has a bright future. Hopefully, Ryan and Christie are the future of the GOP, not Palin/Bachmann/Beck/Hannity/Limbaugh, etc.
