Somehow I’m just not interested in what Bachman has to say. Obama gave an excellent speech. Hear, hear.

The work of this Congress is to take him up on an extraordinary offer. Just do it. Go into all negotiations with the attitude that you’re not going to get rolled, but you’re going to cut a deal along the general lines of the terms he offered.

WHETHER OR NOT his policies are best for the nation, this offer is the best that can be realized over the next two years. And then we’ll have another election where we can thrash out just what to do with what the health care reform bill will have become, say.

Yeah heaven forbid the American people start buying lightbulbs that last longer and do less environmental damage, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT TO INFERIOR PRODUCTS!

Don’t we? We have a right to make all sorts of inferior choices. Especially choices that seem inferior in the eyes of the government.

I’ve got a handful of fixtures where the light is on maybe an hour a year. Equipping those with incandescent bulbs seems quite reasonable to me. The right way to prompt people to buy the right bulbs is to just get the truth out there on how much electricity various bulbs use and how much that costs, and to have a carbon tax so that coal-fired electricity prices reflect what have until now been treated as externalities.

Telling the truth about how long CF bulbs actually tend to last would help with trust, too. They don’t actually last nearly as long as the official numbers say. This, from a fan of them. They’re still the best choice for most fixtures, but exaggerating their merits leads to distrust and closed minds when next we try to get people to switch over to the coming great thing, LEDs.

I missed the majority of the SOTU, what was the Sputnik reference about?

He was basically referencing when the Soviets put up Sputnik and the enormous amount of innovation and work that the US did to catch up and go further then the soviets and related that to what’s needed to be down now in terms of research, innovation and adapting to a cleaner energy economy. He used a roofing company as an example of adaptation and innovation. When the recession hit half their warehouse/factory wasn’t used and with a government loan they started making solar shingles which are now being sold around the country and the world.

Q: Will the IRS hire 16,500 new agents to enforce the health care law?
A: No. The law requires the IRS mostly to hand out tax credits, not collect penalties. The claim of 16,500 new agents stems from a partisan analysis based on guesswork and false assumptions, and compounded by outright misrepresentation.

This wildly inaccurate claim started as an inflated, partisan assertion that 16,500 new IRS employees might be required to administer the new law. That devolved quickly into a claim, made by some Republican lawmakers, that 16,500 IRS “agents” would be required. Republican Rep. Ron Paul of Texas even claimed in a televised interview that all 16,500 would be carrying guns. None of those claims is true.

Short Version: Paul Ryan is wrong and EVIL! Krugman is a hack.

Sorry, DF, but Ryan is wrong. His facts about Ireland and England are wrong. If you start an economic premise with the wrong information all you can do is make things worse. Despite being the height of fashion, austerity is bad economic policy and if implemented will tank the economy again as it did in 37/38.

Of course as Janesville, WI & the rest of the 1st Congressional Dist. shows, he’s quite good at helping people make things worse for working Americans.

I took it to mean they want to limit their view of government to only those parts they agree with. It helps when the rich and powerful fit you from birth with blinders to how “big government” has improved things. I mean, who needs clean air or water? Or a 40-hr work week? Or children in school rather than in the coal mine? If our Founding Fathers had wanted those for us, they’d have written them in the Constitution!

The problem is that any cutting back right now puts us into “austerity” from an economic perspective. We need to be increasing spending on infrastructure, research & education - stimulus and investment in other words - rather than worry too much about the deficit. Ending the bleeding, both literal and monetary, at DoD would do much more to help the economy than anything in Ryan’s proposals.

But then, I believe in the Keynesian Analysis and think that the real problem with the previous stimulus was far too small, so there is my bias on this matter.

re: #478 Dark_Falcon

The current House is not led by fans of additional spending. And voters knew that when they voted Republican. So yes, most of that new spending is going to meet the Congressional ax.

I’m not talking just about spending. I’m talking just as much about vision. Obama is 100% right when he was talking about China and India and the need to keep on top through science and research, innovation and education. He was politely saying if we don’t get together and get our butts into some real high gear we’re gonna be left behind. Same with the energy issues.

Do the Republicans and other opponents talk like this at all? Nope. For the most part they refuse to recognize it or even talk about. America is good and is destined to always be good! That’s all that matters and if you say we ain’t then you’re some sort of traitor. It’s really myopic and backward thinking.

It’s also missing out on a huge opportunity. Less stable times, less uncertain times when things aren’t working quite right are often the best times to revamp, innovate and figure out better and even perhaps new ways to move forward into something even better.

There are a lot of crappy TN panels out there. Especially in the big box stores. Some of them are OK though. Samsungs are pretty good TN panels, they have some lower prices ones.

TN is acceptable for most things, but from a major brand (the major OEMs [Dell, HP] and the major CE companies like Samsung, Asus, etc.)

The rest of us are just trying to get thru today and get a good night’s sleep so we can face tomorrow.

Those that are living in yesterdayland are pissed at Obama for trying to face current challenges instead of undoing the mistakes that they see has keeping us from being their vision of yesterdayland.

Tommorrowlanders are pissed at Obama because he isn’t making sweeping changes to correct mistakes they perceive as roadblocks to tomorrowland.

Heat from light bulbs is actually a very efficient way to generate heat—not so much for light. But in a cold winter up north, incandescent in the winter months actually would be a more green option than florescent—the heat they generate would reduce the load of say an oil or gas furnace.

And we don’t have the right to make other ones.

You mean a tax on the coal companies and electric utilities, right, not the consumers?

What’s the difference? The tax will have the exact same effect no matter who officially bears the cost. There’s even a theorem in economics to that effect.

It’s just like social security. On paper, the employer pays part, and the employee pays part. But everyone would have the same after-tax income if the law had been written differently from the outset, making the employer pay all, or the employee pay all, or anywhere in between.

Supply and demand adjusts to the costs of a tax. When it sorts itself out, the burden of the tax on a transaction between two parties has been split, no matter who initially was tagged “it” to be the one who pays.

The consumer will see somewhat higher electricity prices, more so if their electricity comes entirely from coal-fired plants. Happily for the consumer in this day of new and better lighting technology, he/she can get more lumen hours for less money notwithstanding getting fewer kwh for more money.

558 Glenn Beck's Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut  Wed, Jan 26, 2011 8:48:31am

re: #557 lostlakehiker

What’s the difference? The tax will have the exact same effect no matter who officially bears the cost. There’s even a theorem in economics to that effect.

There’s lots of theorems in economics. They’re not all true. That one happens not to be. As you apparently always need reminding, one of the main rules of economics is that the price of a good is set at what the market will bear, not by the costs of production. I know it’s an article of faith with you that a manufacturer passes all costs to the consumer, but it’s simply not, and never has been, true.

Furthermore, a tax on the companies— on their profits— would be entirely different from a tax on the per-unit consumption, and different again from a Pigovian tax on the negative externalities produced by that company. So I’m seriously asking you which one you mean:

A) A tax on the companies’ profits from the undesirable activity, a cost born by that company alone, since they cannot increase profits by raising prices since their price point is assumed to already be optimal; if they do raise the price, the consumers will use less, lowering their per-unit profit. The only time they would be right to raise prices is when their profit margin had actually shrunk to unprofitability, otherwise they will always lose money by raising price in an elastic market.

B) A tax on the negative externalities of the companies’ activity; a Pigovian tax on pollution. The amount of pollution a company puts out can be quantified and a tax levied based on that amount. Again, this cost is not passed to the consumer because doing so would adjust the optimum price point of the good. While the facile reading of a Pigovian tax would be that the production of the good would therefore decrease, the real-world effect is that the production of the pollutant decreases— by use of CO2 scrubbers and the like— costs which are born by the polluter and not passed to the consumer.

C) A tax on personal consumption. This will have the effect of lowering the personal consumption where possible, but in cases where it is not possible (energy use was already near optimal), it will simply be a regressive tax on consumers. It will also have the unwanted effect of, since it is causing less product to be consumed, dropping the price on the product— it will alter the optimum price point for the product to a lower level. So, of all the forms of taxation on a pollutant, this is the only one that would potentially not result in any positive outcome; just as much pollutant would be produced, and a regressive tax would be in effect.

I know we’ve had these conversations many, many times, and yet you continue to blindly believe, for no reason that I can understand, that companies pass all costs down the consumer in all cases. It’s really bizarre.

If the customers were willing to pay, say, $1.05 instead of $1.00 per item, and consume the same number of items, why wasn’t the company already charging $1.05?

This falls on a fine line between kinda smart and really stupid.

Essentially all of the energy used by a home appliance ends up as heat within the home. Computers and televisions and electric stoves and florescent tubes and incandescent bulbs are all equally efficient heaters (at least in a windowless room - light going out a window obviously doesn’t heat the room).

If you’re heating anyway there’s no such thing as waste heat, and you can run whatever appliances you like with a clean conscience. Whether heating that way is greener than burning oil or gas depends on the source of electricity. Oil and gas are usually cheaper, in cost per BTU in the home.

re: #558 Obdicut

There’s lots of theorems in economics. They’re not all true. That one happens not to be. [Wow. You’re better at economics than the professionals.] As you apparently always need reminding, one of the main rules of economics is that the price of a good is set at what the market will bear, not by the costs of production. [What the market will bear means the INTERSECTION of the demand curve and the supply curve. Shift the supply curve right, reflecting a per unit tax say, and the intersection moves down and right. Higher price, less used. Both producer and consumer share the tax burden.]

I know it’s an article of faith with you that a manufacturer passes all costs to the consumer, [no it isn’t] but it’s simply not, and never has been, true. [Nor did I ever say so.]

A) A tax on the companies’ profits from the undesirable activity, …
[Do you have any idea how loaded with assumptions this question is?]

B) A tax on the negative externalities of the companies’ activity;[snip That’s the tax I had in mind: a tax on the release of CO2 into the atmosphere.]

C) A tax on personal consumption.[snip…not the one I had in mind anyhow.]

If you’d read what I wrote, you’d see that I said the exact opposite of the stance you just put in my mouth. The views I actually hold, and actually express in writing, are very different from the ones you impute to me in your responses. Those views, go figure, are indeed bizarre.

Consider the social security tax. This is a tax on the transaction of labor for wages. The formalities of who pays the tax are beside the point. Whether the tax be levied on the worker, or on the employer, the after tax wages of the worker will be the same. In no case is the employer able to pass all of the cost on to the worker, nor is the worker able to pass all of the cost on to the employer. Both share the burden in reality, however the law is worded. You should know this about economics. It’s not arcana. It’s basic.

A tax on release of CO2 into the atmosphere is, in the medium run, effectively a tax on the consumption of kwh’s. Until new plant can be built, whoever wants to buy kwh’s must buy them from the local utility, which must generate them by burning coal. [Yes, there’s green energy, but too little.] The burden of the tax ends up being shared. When the price of fish at the wharf rises, the price of fish in the supermarket and the restaurant goes up too. The supermarket and the restaurant lose profits AND the consumer buys less and pays more. It’s the same with coal.

In the long run, we’d shift to wind, solar, and nuclear. All would benefit. Our current methods for generating electricity are unsustainable.

563 Glenn Beck's Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut  Wed, Jan 26, 2011 5:29:06pm

re: #562 lostlakehiker

I know it’s an article of faith with you that a manufacturer passes all costs to the consumer, [no it isn’t] but it’s simply not, and never has been, true. [Nor did I ever say so.]

Then why do you believe taxation is passed to the consumer, when it’s just another cost?

When the price of fish at the wharf rises, the price of fish in the supermarket and the restaurant goes up too.

No, I’m sorry, this is just not true no matter how many times you say it. The price of fish sticks may remain the same during any number of swings of fish prices, because the optimal price point of fish sticks is independent of the cost of fish sticks. Likewise, the price of the broiled scrod at a restaurant will likely remain the same.

I’m really not sure why you basically ignored everything I wrote— while accusing me of putting the opposite words in your mouth.

Supply and demand adjusts to the costs of a tax. When it sorts itself out, the burden of the tax on a transaction between two parties has been split, no matter who initially was tagged “it” to be the one who pays.

This is not true. If the producer has high enough profit margins, they may eat the entire cost of the tax, just as they’d eat the entire cost of any rise in cost, because to raise the price would adjust the price point and lose them money.

I acknowledge you are saying that the price is split; this makes no more sense than saying the whole cost is passed down. What happens in each, individual case depends on what the market will bear. It is not always split. You are wrong.

A tax on release of CO2 into the atmosphere is, in the medium run, effectively a tax on the consumption of kwh’s

Nope. I have no idea why you’re ignoring the fact that companies can act to release less CO2 while producing the same number of KWHs. I know it doesn’t fit in with your argument, but CO2 scrubbers and other technologies really, really do exist. I swear.
