Study: Abortion and Mental Problems Are Not Related

‘There is still some debate, but the majority of the literature is very clear’
Health • Views: 30,783

A new study by Danish scientists, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, provides more evidence that a common talking point of the anti-choice religious right wing is false: abortion and mental problems are not related.

Women do not suffer mental health problems such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of having an abortion, researchers reported Wednesday.

The study, published by Danish scientists in the New England Journal of Medicine, adds to a growing body of scientific literature that has failed to find that abortion causes psychological problems, as some abortion opponents have asserted.

“There is still some debate, but the majority of the literature is very clear on this,” said Linda Beckman, a psychology professor at Alliant International University in Alhambra, Calif., and a co-author of a 2008 report from the American Psychological Association on abortion and mental health.

Nobody wants an abortion. I think everyone can agree the best way to make everyone happy is to prevent unwanted pregnancies. But should an unwanted pregnancy occur for personal or health reasons, the decision to have an abortion is not contingent on mental instability. In fact, it may give some people closure and help shape their future in a positive way.

Wingnut rule # 17: Never let objective studies get in the way of a good argument/rant/distortion.

After all, the soul searched opinions of a random preacher with an agenda should be given the same weight as a large sample study.

An important part of that report is that women who do have children do face challenges to their mental health. Post-partum depression, as well as the stress of being a mother, are serious things. We need to look out for the well-being of new mothers.

In 1989, the American Psychological Association (APA) convened a panel of psychologists with extensive experience in this field to review the data. They reported that the studies with the most scientifically rigorous research designs consistently found no trace of “post-abortion syndrome” and furthermore, that no such syndrome is scientifically or medically recognized.

The panel concluded that “research with diverse samples, different measures of response, and different times of assessment have come to similar conclusions. The time of greatest distress is likely to be before the abortion. Severe negative reactions after abortions are rare and can best be understood in the framework of coping with normal life stress.” While some women may experience sensations of regret, sadness or guilt after an abortion, the overwhelming responses are relief and happiness.

In another study, researchers surveyed a national sample of 5,295 women, not all of whom had had abortions, and many of whom had abortions between 1979 and 1987, the time they were involved in the study. The researchers were able to learn about women’s emotional well-being both before and after they had abortions. They concluded at the end of the eight-year study that the most important predictor of emotional well-being in post-abortion women was their well-being before the abortion. Women who had high self-esteem before an abortion would be most likely to have high self-esteem after an abortion, regardless of how many years passed since the abortion

Gee - imagine that. Women who where unhappy prior to having an abortion were more likely to be unhappy after having an abortion.

Arizona abortion bill requires race, gender selection be ruled out

…Any doctor who performed an abortion knowing race or sex selection was the reason would face felony charges. And the legislation would permit the father of the unborn child, if married to the woman having the abortion, to sue the doctor for damages.

Neither Montenegro nor independent searches of state records and the Internet provided any information indicating a significant number of women are seeking abortions for those reasons.

Montenegro promised supporting data when interviewed initially last week, but as of late Wednesday had provided none. He said he will have more specifics to back those claims today….

F’in facts. How do they work.

Indeed, Obama even said to Boehner that America is the only country where “someone who began by sweeping the floors of his father’s Cincinnati bar can preside as Speaker of the House in the the greatest nation on Earth.””

54 Walter L. Newton  Thu, Jan 27, 2011 1:12:07pm

I reading around, the reports on traffic, jams, stuck vehicles, stranded this and that, up and down the east coast because of the recent storm. And I only have one question, and it’s a serious one.

What the fuck happened up there?

I grew up on the east coast. I’ve seen plenty of snow, from a few inch storms to blizzards. Sure, I’ve seen traffic snarls and problems, but I don’t remember everyone whining about it like little children.

For 8 winters, I drove every Sunday, from the beginning of November to the middle of Jan. to Philadelphia, about a 200 mile round trip. Many trips were smooth sailing, and some trips took 4-5 hours, because of snow… but that was expected. You took your time, helped others out if you had the ability, take a few swigs of blackberry brandy, and you trudge on home. And when you got their, you felt like you accomplished something.

“I live in Pennsylvania. I was stuck for three hours and they directed us off. I’ve been here ever since. I can’t go anywhere,” said another driver.

Drivers had to stay in one location until the streets were cleared.

“We’ve been here hours,” said some drivers.

Stuck three hours. Did you even take the storm into consideration before you ventured home or out, or did you expect nothing?

Stay in one location. Holy immobility batman.

We’ve been here hours. Be happy your warm and not in a ditch somewhere.

Bullshit. Anyone on the east coast, who’s been there more than 3 days, want to explain what has happened to people up there?

Mr “Queen Ester” himself is back in the news.

Gay Rights Foes Pray For Ellen DeGeneres’ ‘Conversion’

Preaching last month at an event called the Winter Ramp held at the Chattanooga Convention Center in Tennessee, Engle urged participants to pray for DeGeneres’ “conversion.”

“In revivals, God wants to bring forth notable and conspicuous conversions,” Engle told the crowd. “That’s how he changes the minds of the masses. Come on, Ellen DeGeneres, let her get converted.”

The 52-year-old DeGeneres came out gay in a 1997 cover of Time and married actress Portia de Rossi in 2008 before voters approved Proposition 8.

Now if I were married to Portia de Rossi, I don’t think I would be thinking about converting anytime soon.

And from our other favorit Envanlunatic

America’s public policy: all we need is Genesis 1 and 2

Origins: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen. 1:1). The Founders are right, and Darwin is wrong.

Environmentalism: Man is not an intruder, a noxious weed or a parasite, but rather God’s vice-regent, acting with his delegated and rightful authority over all the environment.

Population: Leftists say there are too many people on the earth; the Judeo-Christian tradition says there are too few. “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth” (Gen. 1:28). The goal should be for each set of parents to have at least three children, for if parents have just two, they aren’t multiplying, they’re only replacing themselves.

Secular fundamentalism is the problem and the Judeo-Christian tradition is the solution. Will America and its elected officials wake up in time to save what is left of the greatest nation on earth?

Part of the problem (locally to me) is the city I live in is completely f-ing broke. They can’t afford effective snow removal anymore, so there is a loose network of volunteer plows that clear the residential streets after storms. They also no longer plow periodically during the storm, as they used to, except for the commuter arteries and highways.

This has resulted in much slower snow removal, and in some cases, side streets that just never get plowed.

Here’s an update to the Spokane bomb found along the MLK parade route:
Official: Bomb found on King Day in Spokane had rat poison, pellets

(CNN) — A backpack bomb discovered last week along a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade route in Spokane, Washington, contained a chemical found in rat poison and was packed with little metal pellets, apparently as shrapnel, a law enforcement official said Thursday.

The device was set up to be detonated remotely, the official told CNN. The bomb is being examined in the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia.

Authorities don’t have a suspect and don’t know whether the bomb was linked to a white supremacist group, the official said.

Before the King march kicked off last week, three parade workers found the gray backpack on a bench at the northeast corner of North Washington Street and West Main Avenue in downtown Spokane.

No threat was made before the device was found, and no note was found with the backpack, authorities said.

The FBI said last week it will consider regional neo-Nazi activity in its investigation of the backpack bomb.

In general, in linux, if it runs in wine, it’s by far preferable to running in a VM. Wine is a lifesaver. I’ve only discovered one or two programs which I like that won’t run in it, and often they run faster and smoother than they do natively in windows. (network apps in particular, due to windows’ craptastic network stack.)

um well, let’s see

Been doing it for 20-odd years, since the 386 DOS days, I haven’t really had to deal with windows restarts under my 64 bit version of Win7, but that’s because it’s my primary machine, I remember one reboot a couple weeks ago that I just put off until I went to bed. I’ve never had Win7 crash on me.

But A) games and the games biz B) more and better apps for what I need C) everything’s cheaper D) everything is easier to tweak and mess with, E) more software for PC in general

The thing about games, is to me, they’re an art form, especially the indie games scene. The majority of the good stuff coming out of indie games culture is on windows. So having a Mac is just not something I can justify, it’d be like going to a Amazon and finding out you can’t read most of the books there, that they’re just magically unavailable.

They’re cool machines, though, many of my friends have them, but they’re not right for me at all. The downsides of the Mac are dealbreakers, whereas the downsides of the PC (Windows isn’t as elegant) well, I’ve gotten pretty good at Playing Windows since 3.1, so it’s cool :D Win7 to me is so well put together than I really couldn’t have hoped for a better OS for what I need it to do.

Alaska must release Palin e-mails by May 31, state AG declares

The state of Alaska has until May 31 to release about 25,000 pages of e-mails from former Gov. Sarah Palin and senior members of her administration, the state attorney general declared Wednesday.

As we reported last month, by May the delays in dealing with public records from the Palin administration will have stretched out longer than the Palin administration itself. She was governor for 966 days. By May 31, the request from msnbc.com for the official records will be 986 days old. State regulations usually require records to be made available within 10 days, but state officials said they were overwhelmed by the volume of the e-mails.

Officials in the governor’s office asked the attorney general to approve a 15th delay in the process, until May 31. That request was approved Wednesday by the new attorney general, John J. Burns.

25,000 pages of (probably) misspelled, barely coherent emails. I feel for the luckless few who have to review them.

Microsoft said it sold 8 million Kinect units in 60 days. This is going to be HUGE.

I really think this is the start of a new way to interact with a computer, TV or almost anything.

I’ve used one, the dancing and bowling games are quite remarkable

I’m the same way, I was using Windows 2000 for YEARS. :D But I do really dig 7, I customized it to behave somewhat more like XP re: start menu, and I’m gold. I still use windows in the same way I always have.

They can dream.

I’m pretty sure everyone who longs for a benign dictatorship imagines they and theirs will be holding the reins. There are going to be some pretty disappointed people come the revolution.

Article I saw said that MSNBC (among others) planned on setting them up in a searchable format. I’m sure there are some smoking gun memos of her saying something extremely stupid or insulting.

If MSNBC goes through with that, it would lower the collective IQ of the Internet massively, as well as the IQs of the people reading it (or trying to read it).

The revolution will not be televised on EWTN.

In truth, I don’t find any way to necessitate having 2.1 children per couple when there are finite resources and problems with starvation and energy sources, already.

Frankly, I don’t relish the thought of being packed in like sardines, fighting for food, wishing for green grass, blue sky, and some space.

ME was supposed to be a bridge between 98 and Windows 2K. It was one of MS most glaring fails. Though iirc 2000 was supposed to be a Windows NT hybrid.

Bought a laptop with Win Vista. They wanted to charge me 40.00 to purge it and downgrade to Win98. I’d like you to meet my new Linux machine.

it’s because it’s that OEM deal, you have to pay extra for the XP downgrade as well

Linux is a cool thing I support but which i cannot have :D

At this point, I’m just used to my blah HP laptop. My next one will likely be a Mac, but that’s at least a year off, since I can’t afford a new computer right now. I think it will be a nice graduation gift for myself.

My information systems prof can’t stand Windows, but he also can’t understand why so many people in the class have Macs. To him, the ideal system is a PC with Ubuntu running on it. It’s made for interesting conversations so far.

Really, for most casual users, Ubuntu (or any number of other user-friendly linux distros) does do anything you want.

It only requires specialized knowledge if you want to try to make it do things it isn’t designed to do out of the box. (Such as running windows programs.)

Linux can be a pain in the ass at first, but once you are out of the tricky part of the learning curve, it’s delightfully simple to use. Why fish through menus looking for icons when there is a command for literally everything?

if I had a netbook and it wasn’t a thing for art, I’d have ubuntu on it! I’ve seen it fly on an Acer Aspire One.

re: #182 WindUpBird

It’s perfect for netbooks, due to the relatively light kernel. Though, for a netbook, I Ubuntu wouldn’t be my first choice. Ubuntu comes with all sorts of extras compiled into the kernel that just aren’t necessary for a netbook.

Arch Linux makes my little 10” dell mini atom-based netbook fly, but… Arch Linux isn’t the easiest distro to install and get a graphical desktop running. The strength (and weakness) of distros like Arch is that they come with nothing bundles. Nothing. You get a command line and a network stack. It’s up to the user to build their OS from there from the ground up. From one perspective, it means that you get a perfectly customized lean and mean OS that does exactly what you need it to. From another perspective, its a pain in the ass to get up and running.

I highly recommend Arch (and its amazing package manager, pacman) to anyone that wants to tinker with a more nerdy OS, and wants bleeding-edge software in a stable platform.

He also wants me to itemize and build a shopping list for a PACS server. I didn’t even know what the hell a PACS server was, but I know now. Heh.

This is going to be an interesting class, I just know it.
