Happy Sunday afternoon, everyone...nice storm today kept the ocean nice and foamy...it's broken now leaving a nice blue sky with clouds to orange up as the sun sinks...got a lot of work done on the house. Replaced the faulty timer switch for the front porch light with a plain old light switch, installed a cat door to the garage so Bflat can have his catbox away from other living areas, fixed one of our leather & bent wood chairs so it can be sat in without worry of falling through, replaced dead bulbs on the back porch light, installed our washer and dryer (fuck you, Sears, for shitty service and delivery), and took the dogs to the beach - twice today and once yesterday. Feet tired, time to enjoy my manhattan.

Tunisians wary as Islamists emerge from hiding

Islamists, long oppressed under the former regime, had little to do with the uprising, but they could benefit from a transition to democracy. The thought unsettles some in this largely secular country.

I think this just might be inevitable. Ataturk was the only one who had a semi decent plan but most of the Islamic world has been living under military dictators for so long that they're willing to take their chances with the Islamists. Even with examples like Suadi Arabia and Iran they still want to do it.

U.S. praises Egyptian military's 'professionalism'

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mullen thanks Egyptian military chief of staff for not turning army's U.S.-funded firepower on demonstrators.

The highest-ranking U.S. military officer praised the "professionalism" of Egypt's armed forces in a phone call with a top Egyptian commander on Sunday, as Egyptian troops refrained from a crackdown on protesters.

Egypt receives about $1.3 billion a year in U.S. military aid, assistance that could be jeopardized if the army joined last week's harsh police crackdown. Police used rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons against protesters calling for President Hosni Mubarak to step down.

Well, no they 're moving into the cities with their M1s. We'll have to see what happens. Strikes me as a mistake, really. Tanks don't do well in that sort of situation.

I'm talking about their general support for the protestors. Most other militaries in the region wouldn't have a problem cracking down on their civilians.

Tanks, in this situation, are parade props. They're not weapons. This military probably won't use even clinical force, e.g. snipers. They're not about to use tanks to machine gun demonstrators.
