TPM Cafe: Of Conservative Traitors

Hell hath no fury like a tribe betrayed
Opinion • Views: 31,944

After I posted an essay in Talking Points Memo’s TPM Cafe about Michael Wolraith’s book Blowing Smoke, imagine my surprise to find the same old stalkers and dimwitted creeps who follow me everywhere on the Internet posting the same old ugly, moronic comments at TPM. It’s as predictable as the sunrise; whenever I post something at another site, or when I’m the subject of an article, these people will invariably show up and start spewing hatred within minutes after I link to the site. They obsessively read everything I write, and they’ve been at this harassment game for years.

The appearance of these losers at TPM prompted Michael Wolraith to write another essay about this very phenomenon: Of Conservative Traitors and a Cure for Madness.

I’d like to thank Charles Johnson for his excellent essay, The New Tribalism. In my book, Blowing Smoke, I found myself searching for a word to describe the vague web of race, religion, culture, and politics that the right wing has used to construct and exploit a new collective identity. I called it a new class-consciousness, but I think that Johnson’s term tribalism more aptly captures the jumble of racial and social bonds that the right has used to mobilize white, Christian conservatives as a political bloc.

If you read below the fold of Johnson’s article, you’ll notice a number of vitriolic comments from readers. These commenters are not TPM regulars. They have been stalking Johnson around the Internet for years, literally. The one called diaryofdaedalus has tried to register at Johnson’s blog under at least a dozen different aliases. He has his own blog that alternates between bashing Johnson and exposing the “myth of Serbian genocide.” Apparently, he even chose the name Daedalus because Johnson used Icarus as a stage name in his former musical career.

Why such obsession? It’s a bitter example of what happens when conservatives like Johnson challenge the bigoted rhetoric of the right wing. The explanation requires some back story.

Read the whole thing. (And many thanks to Michael for his support.)

Not only have they challenged their allies' political ideology, they have also betrayed their tribe, to use Johnson's term. Tribes typically reserve their harshest penalties for traitors

an outcast now...like a hard earned scar, it's a badge of honor...too many people are bought and sold while honor and principle are vanishing from the political scene...political parties are no more than the most elaborate tribes...I don't care who a person is, if they stand on fairness, honesty and principle, I will listen

Back before I joined LGF, I just remember Charles gaining my respect when he was one of the few in the conservative blogsphere to denounce the alliance with the European neo-fascists that many on the right adovcated for due to the latter's staunch anti Islam positions.

Cheer up Charles, usually their comments are so nonsensically biased and over-the-top hate filled that no casual reader could (unless they are an idiot) mistake them as non-partisan. If anything they are just proving what you said in the article about them defending their own version of reality, regardless of the facts.

Egyptian protestors protect undercover security officers

Though police had not returned to duty Tuesday, undercover government security workers continued to monitor the streets and buildings. Many were camped out at hotels, turning away journalists, whom they accuse of misrepresenting the unrest.

One such plainclothes security officer was recognized by protesters along the beachfront boulevard. After seizing his government ID to confirm his identity, a couple of protesters tried to attack the man and one pulled out a hunting knife to stab him. But other protesters quickly encircled the officer to protect him and began chanting, "No! No! Peaceful! Peaceful!"

They dragged him away from the area to safety.

I've seen the way that many of Charles' right wing critics go after him. If I didn't know any better I'd say I was in middle school again. I mean a great way to show you have the intellectual maturity of a twelve year old is to call the person you disagree with a fag like many of Charles' right wing critics have done. I think many of them are mad because they want him to be something he's not and that's a hack.

Wolraich makes one hell of a point. Your stalkers react with such vitriol because you repeatedly strike a nerve, and that enrages them by orders of magnitude more than if it was a liberal saying the same thing.

...the days of Glenn Beck drawing three million viewers are long gone. And they’re never coming back. But at this rate, the two-million viewership mark seems to be slipping away, too. Glenn Beck now routinely flirts with ratings in the 1.6-1.8 million range, which is almost exactly half the rating Beck was getting one year ago. In truth, that’s how many viewers Glenn Beck used to attract when the host was on vacation and somebody less famous stood in for him...

42 Ming  Tue, Feb 1, 2011 4:03:57pm

I must say, "tribalism" seems like an excellent choice of words. There is no thinking involved; one merely feels oneself to be a "member of the tribe", one of us instead of one of them. By definition, people who find this appealing would have to be opposed to President Obama, who works hard to bring different people (different tribes) together. The whole point of belonging to a tribe is not to come together; it's to distinguish oneself (good) from "the others" (evil). These people seem to crave a kind of catharsis, in which their tribe, in an explosion of violence, "teaches the other tribes a lesson", and then their tribe assumes its rightful place at the top of the heap. The whole concept of cooperating with anyone, from other tribes to the environment to even science, is anathema to them.

He's persanlly attached to the protest movement and he's a little defensive and dismissive of the MB but I understand that from his perspective they aren't relevant to the majority of the people in the streets.
I think he's betting that this will translate into a political force which will be able to counteract the MB when elections roll around. Maybe, Maybe not and even he seems fairly unsure. At the end of the interview he says "let's hope for the best".

re: #78 Killgore Trout

I just finished listening to the Sandmonkey interview. Pretty good and I do think I understand where he's coming from.
If I were in his shoes I might take the same gamble myself.

I agree. It's hard to predict how it will all play out. It depends on a lot of numbers, who has how many on the streets how soon, for how long, etc. None of the organizations, coalitions, etc. stay solid in this period of unrest, either. And then there's technical stuff, constitutional issues etc. For all practical purposes, MB cannot be excluded from upcoming election, everything else would surely mean civil war and/or a military takeover.

Yep. And lots of other industries. If businesses start failing en masse, unemployment will climb even higher than 25% (unemployment currently in Egypt), and that won't mean good things.

1. A smaller middle class means fewer cars overall, and a higher percentage of more expensive cars (beemers) as opposed to average ones (ford or fiat, eg.)

2. Many of the expensive cars in 3rd world countries are in fact brought second-hand from the 1st world. A wrecked beemer in France can be sold and fixed up in Egypt for 1/2 the cost of doing so in France. Happens all the time.

We actually used napkins. See, you let them go slack and then quickly put them taut. Ka-fling.

It's probably one of the naughtiest things I've ever done. I knew someone else would have to clean it up.

I must confess... I have done much worse with jello.

She raised her kids strict Wiccan hippie, and then my friend got into her teens and joined a local Methodist church. You guessed it. Potato-chip casseroles galore. "Why It Is Wrong to Believe a Word Mubarak said"

What has Mubarak left out in his speech:

1. Emergency law is still effective, which means oppression, brutality, arrests, and torture will continue. How can you have any hope for fair democratic elections under emergency law where the police have absolute power?

2. Internet is still not working, no talks of lifting censorship.

3. No talks of allowing freedom of speech, freedom to create political parties, freedom to participate in politics without the risk of getting arrested. FYI to start a political party you need the government's permission. How do you expect democracy to come out of this?

4. He said he will put anyone responsible for corruption to trial right? What about putting the police who killed 300+ to trial? What about members of NDP who are the most corrupt businessmen/politicians in the country. Do you think he'll put those to trial? Think again.

5. He didn't even take responsibility for anything that went wrong in the last 30 years. Not even his condolences to the martyrs who have fallen in this revolution.

They use the talking points, embrace his revisionist history etc but the vast mojority of the Tea Partiers don't believe this stuff either. If they did they'd be dangerous. A very small minority of wingnuts take the rhetoric as literally true and most of them probably have mental problems.
If they really thought the death panels were real there would be riots in the streets.

They didn't riot for fear of the FEMA camps............

Heh, good one. Though I still think we can learn from one point without succumbing to the other. Of course we can do that even easier by looking north for health care inspiration ;)

Hope not. Better not. Not with one order of twice cooked pork, 2 egg rolls, and chicken pan fried dumplings. And it's all mine!! Must. Stop. Thinking. About. Food.

One of those moments where I'm a little less proud of being from Philly. Even worse than the snowballs at Santa Claus incident.

What nutjob is CNN interviewing? One comment this guy said makes me this it's Anjem Choudary, but why would CNN interview him? He is a Radical British Muslim via Pakistan. He has nothing to do with Egypt.

They're looking for an "Islamic Perspective". EPIC FAIL

re: #130 Dark_Falcon

Not even close. Tea Party rallies are good natured love-ins compared to what we've been seeing in Egypt.

Like I said the other night, the TP'ers have it too nice to actually risk it in the street. Most of them, I'd bet, haven't been hungry (literally or metaphorically) in a very long time.

The problem is the Left isn't the Democrats. The Democrats are to the right of the left. I don't know what parties they belong to on the left, but I hate being lumped in with them.

Bolded for truth.

"Nearly half of Americans believe Death Panel falsehood"

Blanket coverage of that type of shit does sink in.

I can guarantee you he's not stockpiling gold or hoarding food. He has a well balanced portfolio of stock and bonds. He preaches about the inevitable downfall of the dollar but negotiated a 5 year contract to be paid in dollars and not gold. Same with his audience. They aren't fleeing the country because they think we're doomed. It's all a show.

Actually, Killgore, he's Mormon, so Beck probably does have a 1-year food stockpile. But that's not actually a bad thing. The gold stuff is bad, but having some food stocked up can be a very good thing indeed.

Very few Americans are "hungry" in the sense the Egyptians are, and that's a good thing. It means, in part, that for all its flaws our government is relatively responsive to the concerns of its citizens.

I have an emergency food stash too. It's common sense. I probably have a bigger stash than most just because of the garden. Beans, squash, etc all store well but I'm under no delusions that I'm going to survive the apocalypse. A short term disaster yes.

Bingo, we agree on that. Our preferences may come at it from different directions but an important difference between America and Egypt is that there really is more than one direction to come at an issue from.

It's pretty hard to say for sure - we can only speculate, but I tend to take them at their word. Polls show that Beck is the most highly regarded person among Tea Partiers. A lot of people say that they believe in what Beck says. There really are a lot of folks out there who think that Obama's a socialist that's trying to "destroy life in America as we know it," by redistributing wealth to lazy poor people buoyed by evil groups like ACORN blah, blah.

You've seen the polls of Tea Partiers. They show that there are a whole lot of hardcore folks out there. If you think about it, an audience of 2 million people isn't really that much. If only a small fraction of the hardcore Tea Partiers made up a significant chunk of his audience, then a lot of his audience really are wacky enough to believe his nonsense.

And that right there is the problem with the way Beck hocks emergency food stores. He and the ads that run during his show make those rations look like they'll get you through a total breakdown of society, which of course they will not. I've got no beef with recommending a good-sized food stockpile, but that advocacy should be sane, which Beck's is not.

All I know is what the poster says, and when I last saw him he denied being Cato. But I'm not going to actually put any stock in those denials; I just hope they're true. But I'm not going to get bent out of shape either way. Whoever it is has soiled themself by posting in that fever swamp.

A Tea Party Blogger thinks that The protests in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, et all were inspired by the Tea Party fighting the oppressive Liberal American Government. I thought sure, it's possible, but only if they misspelled their signs.

Did any of them have signs of Obama with a bone through his nose because that's the only sure fire way to know if they were influenced by the TPers.

I never thought I'd say this, but I miss Keith Olbermann on MSNBC. I was never Olbermann's biggest fan, but good grief, Cenk Uygur is an idiot. He has all of Olbermann's partisan fervor but none of the intelligence. And he needs to take diction lessons; he slurs words constantly. I just turn off the TV when he comes on.

I can't stand him.

re: #212 SanFranciscoZionist

Others are grateful forever. A friend of mine lost her father, very tragically, when she was a young teenager. The ladies from church brought food. Tons, and tons of food. She still chokes up when she remembers how her mother was barely able to get dressed in the morning, but the casseroles kept coming.

I used to be cynical about flowers at a funeral when I was much younger. Then my grandparents died unexpectedly in a car accident, the funeral home was filled to overflowing with flowers. I was deeply touched.
Folks just want a way to express their sympathy and support.

That was a great article. And count me in the number of people who have turned away from the new GOP's toxic mix of willful ignorance, bigotry and conspiracy peddling. Its a cynical pessimistic political tack, to demonize everything about the middle in order to make it feel more like home for the crackpots. It will be interesting to watch the GOP nominees slug it out in 2012 for a chance to lead the tribe.
