John McCain Calls for Mubarak to Bail
Sen. John McCain is now calling for Hosni Mubarak to step down.
Regrettably the time has come 4 Pres. Mubarak 2 step down & relinquish power. It’s in the best interest of Egypt, its people & its military.

PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA—In surprisingly candid remarks Thursday, Kim Jong-un, heir apparent to North Korea’s highest government post, expressed doubt that he was sufficiently out of his mind to succeed his father, longtime dictator Kim Jong-il.
While emphasizing that he was definitely completely insane and would likely be even less stable by the time he assumed power, the younger Kim nevertheless wondered if he could ever be enough of a lunatic to replace the most unhinged leader on the planet.“Obviously, I know I was handpicked because I’m super crazy,” said Kim, the youngest of the 69-year-old dictator’s four known children. “But my father’s just so great at what he does. Did you know the people of North Korea have heard his voice exactly once, for like five seconds? How nuts is that? Honestly, I look at stuff like that and I think, ‘Wow, there’s just no way I can ever top Dad.’”

I think it will because as we’ve seen during the previous year notable political figures have made and impact with their words in simple Tweets — both good and bad. It is the reaction that we will see that becomes the story. Such is the case of Sarah Palin’s Tweets for those that see her in a negative light.
For McCain to make a statement that calls for Mubarak to step down is a newsworthy event however minor it may seem. It’s already spreading on the internet as we speak. Many will quibble on his use of the word “regrettably” however intuitively one would not expect a Republican leader in the Senate to call for the resignation of a historical ME and conservative ally, Hosni Mubarak.

Senators decry link between Egypt, ‘kill switch’ bill
Three U.S. senators who want to give the president emergency powers over the Internet are protesting comparisons with the “kill switch” highlighted by Egypt’s Net disconnection.
In a statement yesterday, the politicians said their intent was to allow the president “to protect the U.S. from external cyber attacks,” not to shut down the Internet, and announced that they would revise their legislation to explicitly prohibit that from happening.
“Some have suggested that our legislation would empower the president to deny U.S. citizens access to the Internet,” said the statement from Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), and Senator Tom Carper, (D-Del.). “Nothing could be further from the truth.” Lieberman, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, is chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
They said, however, that they’ll make sure their forthcoming legislation “contains explicit language prohibiting the president from doing what President [Hosni] Mubarak did.”
Egypt restored Internet service to the country at 11:29 a.m. today Cairo time after a five-day blackout that was intended to quell anti-government protests.
The latest public version of their Internet emergency legislation, S.3480, was approved by Lieberman’s committee in December but was not voted on in the full Senate.
Their so-dubbed “Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act” would hand the president power over privately owned computer systems during a “national cyber emergency” and prohibit review by the court system. CNET reported last week that it will be reintroduced in the new Congress

The Onion strikes again!

Think I’ve posted this before, but I was once walking with my mother, realized she wasn’t behind me anymore, and turned back. She was standing in front of a newsrack, staring in literal open-mouthed horror at a headline that read “Bush Complains, ‘Vacation Ruined By Stupid Dead Soldier’”.
I had to point out that it was The Onion, after which her heart started beating again.

The patriot act allowed “sneak and peek” warrantless searches of homes, businesses, and records. Also, they can “trap and trace” (tap) phone and internet lines coupled with a gag order on the ISP/phone company so that you cannot be informed you are being watched. But, that power isn’t explicitly the president’s to wield. It’s for law enforcement.

predictably, the freepers are pro mubarak:
Mubarak may have more support than the media is letting on.
I would imagne people are finally sobering up to the reality that if the Islamic crazies take over, life will get FAR WORSE after Mubarak is gone.
also predictably, the whole thing stirs up a well embedded straw man belief that progressives are trying to promote the idea that all muslims are followers of gandhi:
But, but, but…….Muslims are peaceful people! / sarc button off
The PRO-GOV demonstrators are ALL policemen so they are just “fake” hired thugs.
The ANTI-GOV demonstrators are ALL freedom loving citizens.
Brian Williams just told me so.
and, inevitably, there are the sociopathic expressions of satisfaction that groups of The Other are fighting and killing each other:

our great prize fighter has been named after two famous people. not only was the original cassius clay prominent in the abolitionst movement, but also the original muhammed ali was a ruler of egypt
Muhammad Ali Pasha al-Mas’ud ibn Agha (Arabic: محمد علي باشا, Mʋhɑm̑ɑd Oɑlí Báşá) (Mehmet Ali Pasha in Albanian; Kavalalı Mehmet Ali Paşa in Turkish)[2] (4 March 1769 – 2 August 1849) was an Ottoman Turk, of Albanian origin, who became an Ottoman Wāli, and self-declared Khedive of Egypt and Sudan. Though not a modern nationalist, he is regarded as the founder of modern Egypt because of the dramatic reforms in the military, economic and cultural spheres that he instituted. He also ruled Levantine territories outside Egypt. The dynasty that he established would rule Egypt and Sudan until the Egyptian Revolution of 1952.

Whew. Made it.
I had no idea it was like that outside. Hard to tell how much snow we actually got as the wind has made it drift everywhere. Mostly into the yard. Had to wade through a couple of feet to get to coop and the dog pen. The driveway has a 6 foot high drift in the middle of it. I’m going to worry about that tomorrow as the door to the shed that has the snow blower in it is completely covered in another drift.
The front porch is completely full of snow it was a bit of a challenge climbing up an through it to get the shovel. Felt like a kid flaying around. :)
Luckily it’s all light and fluffy so it won’t be super hard to shovel it all out. Untill then I am officially snowed in. Can’t go anywhere.

We cannot blame Barack Obama for Egypt collapsing in on itself.
We can however blame Barack Obama for failing to mitigate and control the impact of the collapse.
Like when a demolition team sets about bringing down a crumbling building — and we now know Obama collaborated to help bring down Egypt — the demolition team must make sure the building, as it implodes, does not throw debris and carnage all over the place. If that happens, the demolition team is liable.
What the fuck? Obama collaborated to help bring down Egypt? This is just beyond FAIL.

Heck, a bunch of people on Daily Kos seemed to think rolling 10 minute blackouts in TX presaged the end of civilization as we know it. It was blamed on leaving essential services to private enterprise. I suppose they wanted to pay for tons of excess capacity standing by for any unusual weather.
When we lived in PA there was a cold snap where the same thing happened to us. It seems the piles of coal froze to the point where they couldn’t scoop it up and get it into the generating plant… Rolling blackouts were a painless solution (except for resetting all the #$%^* clocks.)

Note that by saying the Muslim Brotherhood “must reject violence and recognize democratic goals”, the White House is presupposing that the Muslim Brotherhood accepts violence and does not recognize democratic goals.Notwithstanding that, the White House is perfectly happy to give them a seat at the table.

But wait a minute. From douchebag’s link comes this link to an latimes.com story. Have you guys seen this? latimes.com excerpt…
The Obama administration said for the first time that it supports a role for groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood, a banned Islamist organization, in a reformed Egyptian government.
The organization must reject violence and recognize democratic goals if the U.S. is to be comfortable with it taking part in the government, the White House said.
That’s not good.

I wouldn’t be too concerned. That’s sheer realpoltik power diplomacy at play right now. The WH knows that the MB is going to have some part in whatever happens with a new gov’t. They also know that part of their schtick is anti-american rhetoric, they use it as a talking point. It would be worse for the WH to say we support democracy blah blah except in the case of MB. That sort of statement would give MB more power and something they would be more then happy to use for their own gain

You always have to put out the message that change for the better will be welcomed, to provide incentive to do better.

Good point. I wonder if Obama would intentionally use “the kiss of death” approach. In polling in Egypt, 12% answer yes to the question “Is the US more good than bad”, and 87% answer yes to “Is the US more bad than good”. They fucking hate us there. Well if that poll is correct I’m sure the analysts know about it. So I don’t know about the kiss of death strategy but I do think a general ‘we support whomever is chosen in a fair, non violent democratic election’ is prudent move. No need (at least on the public face of it) look like there favoring going on because that just plays into anti-US sentiment. Regardless of what happens that WH is going to have to have some sort of relationship with whoever it is.
That doesn’t mean that there isn’t stuff going on behind the scenes though. That’s where the real stuff happens.

The ACLU is nothing if not single minded in their willingness to defend FUCKING ANYBODY.
My uncle used to work for the ACLU as the national chairman back in the 70’s-80’s. At one point, they were approached with a case involving a KKK group being denied a permit to march. So, the ACLU took the case, and found a black female Jewish lawyer to represent them. This was my uncle’s idea of a joke. (My uncle was Jewish, so this seemed like justice to him)

“Oliver North became famous for admitting he lied to Congress, and was charged on sixteen felony counts although only three stuck, destruction of documentation, obstruction of congressional inquiry, and illegal gratuity.
Afterwards, the American Civil Liberties Union got those three charges overturned on the count that a witness in his trial may have been affected by his inadmissible congressional testimony, and threw the convictions out based on that.”

I’m not sure its in our best interests to either preserve or push out Mubarak. The less meddling on our part, the better. This is for the Egyptian people to sort out. And from the clips I watched of opposing sides lobbing chunks of concrete at each other, this isn’t a minor disagreement brewing on the streets. Lots of anger on display. We could be in the early stages of an ugly sectarian war.

This.
The ACLU’s central issue is “everybody deserves access to adequate legal representation”. Everything else flows from that. And the thing is, they are right. Without people willing to defend total douches, people who are accused of being total douches, whether accurately so or not, are screwed.

“Regrettably”.
With all due respect Senator, kiss my ass.
Why? He’s a US Senator and it was very convenient for the US to have Mubarak as an ally. Now our interests are not those of the Egyptian people, he’s recognizing that now, but the “regrettably” part is completely understandable. That’s why you saw the administration being so careful on this since the very beginning.
